I hope I'm wrong, but my understanding is that if the Senate bill vote passes tomorrow - it's over. Obama can then sign it and it becomes "the glorious law of the land".
The Senate Bill must be voted on before amendments can be voted on. The bill must be singed into law first, before changes can be made.

It gets worse. From NRO (H/T the 'Cuda's Twitter):
Military Plans Not Protected Under Obamacare? [Daniel Foster]
From GOP.gov:
Background: On March 18, 2010, just days before the House votes on the DemocratsÂ’ government takeover of health care, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-MO) announced he would introduce legislation to preemptively state that TRICARE and the Department of Defense non-appropriated fund (NAF) health plans meet all of the health care requirements currently under consideration by Congress for individual health insurance. TRICARE and the NAF health plans programs provide health coverage to members of the military and their families, military retirees and their families, and employees of U.S. military post/base exchanges. Chairman Skelton even stated he would also insert this legislative language into the national defense authorization bill, reiterating the threat the health care bill currently poses to military health plans. This is an explicit admission that the final Democrat health care bill does not protect these plans.
Military Protections Scrapped: The Senate-passed health care bill, which the House is expected to “deem” passed on March 21, 2010, omitted protections for military health plans that were included in the House bill. Specifically, the Senate language does not appear to give the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) health care system specific protection from interference by other government agencies administering the various authorities contained in the massive bill, as it pertains to “minimum essential coverage.” The minimum essential coverage language in the Senate bill does cover “the veterans health care program under chapter 17 of title 38, United States Code,” but it is unclear whether that covers veterans’ survivors and dependents.
The final bill would leave it up to a bureaucrat at the Department of the Treasury to determine whether TRICARE meets the minimum standards under the DemocratsÂ’ individual health insurance mandate. If that bureaucrat decides against TRICARE, service members and their families would have to buy some other health coverage or pay a penalty.
In an effort to bolster support for the House health care takeover back in August 2009, the White House advertised that billÂ’s exemption for 9.2 million military personnel, families, and retirees covered under TRICARE and the military health plan. In August, the White House website stated that:
Health reform legislation that is being considered would enable those who are covered by TRICARE to meet the shared responsibility requirement for individuals to have insurance, thereby exempting such members of the uniformed services and dependants from being assessed penalties. If enacted, the President will ensure that this exemption is implemented aggressively.
Of course, the final health care bill does not include this promised exemption for military plans.

They are being misled. The Stupak 12 was peeled to 6 by the so called Catholic organizations(CHA and the Network Lobby) endorsing the Senate Bill. Both organizations say the Senate Bill still needs to be amended on the abortion issue. Too bad it can't be amended now. Only Stupak and the 12 could stop the Senate Bill by preventing it from passing in the House.

They are. These are Democrats and they lie.
Almost all of the Stupakers are in strong GOP districts. The two-step is simple. You're a hardcore lefty but you burnish some characteristic that makes you look more moderate or even conservative. For some, it's a military history. For others, it's a claim to be pro-life.
The pro-life thing is a gimme anyway. When abortion does come up, it's very rare. They can vote (or more likely just blather) pro-life and then voila, instant right-wing credentials.

You mean, when House Republicans voted for the Stupak Amendment? If your theory is that by voting against the Stupak Amendment, the House Republicans would have triggered the bill's defeat at the hands of the Stupak 12, then the fact that 6 of those 12 are voting for the Senate bill in violation of their own "pro-life principles" kind of knocks that argument down. As Techie says above, they're Democrats, and the odds are they will sacrifice any principle for partisan gain. The fact the House Republicans backed up Stupak previously is the only reason that Stupak still has five other Dems on his team willing to stand against the Senate bill.

Yes, but there are now THREE things that are going to be voted on: Rules, Amendments, and the Senate Bill. WHICH one of these has all of these "switched" votes? I'd be willing to bet that the switches aren't on the original Senate bill - they're trying to fake us out.
If someone who is keeping tabs on the votes wants to be serious, they really need to have separate tallies for each bill. The whole reason they were going the deem-and-pass route in the first place was precisely because they couldn't get the votes for the Senate bill as it stands.
Passing an amendments bill isn't going to change that one bit - the amendments bill still has to go through the Senate, and they will NEVER bring it up for discussion....
Get on the phone and fax lines and let them know what this means, ASAP -

The House is going to (try to) pass the Senate bill unamended. Instead of amending it, they're considering a separate "fix" bill that the Senate is supposed to take up, in reconciliation, after Obama signs the Senate bill into law.
The House has to vote on the "fix" bill first, just because they don't trust their fellow House Democrats who might prefer the Senate version, to not bail after they pass the Senate bill.
The Senate promises to take up the House's "fix" bill once Obama signs the Senate bill into law.
If Hatch follows through on his threats, the Republicans will try to stop it from being considered under "reconciliation," which would kill the House fixes, immediately. Otherwise the Senate can (if it so chooses) vote on the House fix bill with a simple majority.

Abortion, whether you're okay with it or not, is killing an unborn baby. There's no debate; that's what it is.
So if you're okay with killing an unborn baby, 'cuz that's what's in that there uterus, then that's your 'principled' stand.

Here's what I see: The House passes the Senate bill and Obama signs it. The Senate throws the reconciliation bill in the trash and drafts a new bill containing a Cornhusker Kickback repeal, some mild abortion restrictions, and a reduction in the tax that unions hate. Are Republicans really going to filibuster that? I doubt it. Most likely it will pass overwhelmingly and Obama will be the genius who gave us bipartisan health care reform.

I realize that it's more likely this will pass than not. That said, we have four boxes on which to stand: the soap box, the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box.
We are not giving up our soap box, and we will be able to use the ballot box next November. The jury box (or judges) is still in play, with states refusing to cooperate, and of course there are 100 million Americans with cartridge boxes out there.
Open up your mental horizons.

I'm not okay with it, but I'm also not OK with treating adult women like small children who can't be trusted to decide anything on their own (you know, like lefty scrunts treat adult women). Women who want to kill their babies are going to find a way to do it no matter what I say--and they end up feeling the consequences sooner or later. Like I said--it's between them, the father, and God. All I ask is that they leave my wallet the fuck out of it (and stay out of my refrigerator, scrunts--my body, my choice).
I do think states/localities should be allowed to decide if that's really something their community wants going on there--Roe was shitty law.

Not a hope in hell.
Can you imagine the political fallout from refusing to fund health care across the country once people are forced/pressured into government run plans?
"Lawsuits?"
Sure, that would go forward, but it's doubtful that the courts would intervene with internal congressional matters based on past precedents. Not impossibly, just a real long shot.
"States opt out and it doesnt matter?"
I'm hardly knowledgeable on the relevant law, but I've heard it's unlikely state law would trump federal in that case. However, it's a good question for those more knowledgeable than I.
"Republican President in 2012 and its all repealed?"
I don't think it would be repealed for political reasons. However, the only way this could happen is with concurrent strong majorities in both houses and, again, politically I think it would be hard to summon up the will.
It would be like "repealing" social security, but harder. Way easier said than done regardless of the objective merits of the underlying program.

First comment here ever.
As I read these comments, my ITunes goes to AC/DC "Fire your guns"......
I count on no improperly named "Democrats" to stand for liberty, for individualism. I don't expect that they've even read the Constitution.
I don't think average citizens need to have read the Constitution to understand when their individualism has been stepped on. They know it has been now.
I expect average citizens to stand up for their own liberty, for their own individualism, and I wont be disappointed, regardless of this vote. If this passes, our fight has to turn toward repeal.
Fire your guns.

I'm just trying to put a fine point on abortion. There is no nuance. There is no justification. Some call it a fetus, or even 'just a lump of tissue,' to make the killing seem more civilized and justifiable.
I call it what it is -- killing an unborn baby. From the moment of conception there's an unborn baby in the uterus. It's not gonna be a chicken, or a rabbit, or a bicycle, or anything else. It is a human baby.

There is no God, Heather Radish, to dole out punishment.
It's up to us humans to protect children. I'm not going to by the excuse recently rolled out by Pope Benedict in another matter that it will be judged by God.
B.S.
We all only get one life so far as anyone knows or can prove.
That is precisely why protecting innocent life is so critically important. We must intervene to stop people from murdering their own children.
The impulse to do so is sickening, and it's up to good people, adults, to stop it. I am not treating someone like a child when I stop them from killing! I am treating them like an adult and holding them, in this lifetime, responsible for their cruel callous actions.

Yes, but there is that valid concern with Obamacare that once it takes root and does what it's meant to accomplish (destroy all private health-care providers), that it would be political suicide to get rid of it. While this is true, there's several things that make Obamacare different than Social Security or Medicare.
1) We're already financially screwed with SS and Medicare, and Obamacare just enhances the decline.
2) With Obamacare, you have 4 years of taxes with little benefits before everything else kicks in.
3) There was a lot more support for SS and Medicare than for Obamacare.
This might be a unique case.

/Not hating on that in particular, I'm just clueless about that whole thing.

You are a bloody genius.
It's exactly that type of thinking that sent the GOP in to battle against the most socialist Congress and Senate in history without the numbers to stop shit.
And you don't think the leftists will take advantage of GOP purists punishing their own Representatives over and over again?
I'm not saying there's an easy answer. But your answer contains an obvious deadly flaw.

Well, there were two ways to go last November.
1) Republicans take a tactical vote against the Stupak Amendment. Stupak and his people have therefore no hope of getting their anti-abortion language in the final bill... so (for half a dozen of them at least) the temptation to cave becomes stronger, not weaker. Further, Pelosi has plenty more negotiating room with the pro-choicers who are ecstatic that the Stupak Amendment has been deep-sixed. And the Senate doesn't have to deal with abortion funding restrictions, since the House failed to include any.
2) Republicans vote for the Stupak Amendment. Pelosi nevertheless manages to get the pro-choicers to swallow it (arguing that it's essentially the status quo of prohibiting Federally funded abortions) and sends a bill to the Senate that can't pass with the abortion funding restrictions intact. And we get to this point, where the Dems have had to go through every bizarre trick they could think of to avoid passing the Senate bill.
Put it this way: if Pelosi can get it passed now, there is no reason to believe that scenario (1) would have led to the bill losing in the House in November.

273 One reason it could be repealed is that the benefits don't start til after the 2012 elections, the taxes start immediately.
Wait? Taxes? But I make under $100,000 and I got a promise from Obama there would be no taxes.

CBO did the report in Dec on Senate bill. The new CBO report included the proposed slaughter rule changes.
Paul Ryan forced the CBO to do, too. At least we have a few good men on the Republican side. It's too bad they suddenly found their principles when it didn't matter, though [excepting McCain & Graham, of course.]

Yeah, because go along to get along has worked so fucking well for the past 40 years. The United States is on the verge of becoming a socialist state and that didn't happen all of a sudden in the last election cycle. Barack Obama is a symptom of what is wrong, he isn't the source.

Fuck you. It has nothing to do with purity. It's about results. You don't keep replacing broken parts with other broken parts.
Like on your mom/dad's Chairman Mao dildo. She/he/it can't keep replacing dead batteries with dead batteries. No results.
That's about all the energy you deserve from me.
Someone already wasted enough energy half-assed raising you to this point.

If this monster gets through the Congressional Cabal, it will be my pleasure to serve on a Federal Jury or Federal Grand Jury.
Amazingly, during pre-trial discovery, I will "deem" the defendant not guilty of the crime, provided it's not murder or rape. Something innocuous to liberals such as bribery, misfeasance, malfeasance, suborning perjury, theft, and especially defrauding the IRS will be deemed a non-offense and the accused party should be released without prejudice.
Fuck Obama and all other liberal-progressives who have damaged our Constitution.

Suppose we had 3 more R's in the Senate and they all voted for Obamacare. How would that help us?
Posted by: schizoid at March 20, 2010 02:31 PM (iFdZh)
306, sure it all depends on who the 3 R's are. If we had 3 Sarah Palin clones, I guarantee they would not be voting for any of this Obama crap. 3 more Olympia Snowes, and well then thats bad, but gotta give the GOP SOME credit this time for holding firm. Even the Maine sisters said no way to this crap bill.
Posted by: Dan at March 20, 2010 02:36 PM (1jzSs)
If we do have a constitutional amendment, we need to change the law-making process as follows:
For ten years after a bill is passed, it can be overturned by a simple majority of both houses of Congress, without the President's signature. This can only apply to the bill in full. It may not be partially repealed or amended with this procedure. This amendment will not apply to declarations of war [since the President is Commander in Chief and should not be constrained by fear of Congressional surrender].
With this amendment in place there will be no "final" vote on socialized medicine, etc. since repeal can be credibly brought up immediately.

Actually shouldn't have done that, but I'm afraid my tirade tomorrow will be even worse. Good think Spring Break is over & I'll be on my way back to the college town so I won't be tempted to see the final vote tally. Don't think my heart can take much more.

A few hours ago from Robert Stacy McCain:
UPDATE 3:11 p.m. ET: Now hearing that “deem and pass” is dead, and a D.C. source tells me that pro-lifers aren’t buying the executive order pitch, rumors of which had been heard earlier this week. However, the fact that leadership is even talking about such a far-fetched maneuver means that Pelosi still doesn’t have enough votes to pass the bill.

Not quite true. Olympia Snowe originally said yes. If one other RINO had followed her it would have triggered a flood.

Dan, I feel your pain. My mother-in-law has told me more than once that I was more suited for the '50s than today. This is the greatest nation on Earth! Why can't our elected officials see that? Why do they want to destroy this great land? It is so incomprehensible. God bless you, Dan. And you keep fighting the good fight.
My mother-in-law is watching the kids tonight, so hubby and I can actually go on a date. I am so looking forward to it... Need to go get ready... I am so thankful to have AoSHQ and Hot Air to speak my mind and hear other patriots speak theirs... I learn so much from (and am so grateful) for all of you folks here (except the trolls). Take care all. I'll be checking in later, I'm sure! I can't seem to get away from the computer this week. Have just been living, eating and breathing politics, because this bill is so huge and devastating. I'm not giving up yet though!

If you vote for abortion, you're a murderer of children. That's. Just. The. Way. It. Is.
You know, I already work outside the U.S., in a country that actually seems to function very well with considerably lower taxation. The more I see of this damned POR left-wing idiocy from America, the less I want to come back. That a stupid, lying, corrupt/criminal son of a bitch like Obastard could get elected President speaks volumes about how easily manipulated dumb Americans are. The Republicans are cretinous incompetent fools and the Democrats are the incarnation of baby-murdering evil. Great choices we've got, aren't they?
