Plus: Open Blog!
— Ace

Open Blog: If you want. I guess I could blog today but I know me: If I spend pretty much all day blogging I'm going to hate it tomorrow or sometime during the week.
One bit of blog business: Genghis has agreed to come back as coblogger and share ONT duties with Maetenloch. (I was just mentioning to Maet: How the heck does he do it every day without a single day off? He said, yeah, I could use some help.)
So Genghis will be doing that and pitching in posts too here and there.
I was never happy to lose him so I'm happy he'll be returning.
Now, if I can just get his pass to work, I think he'll be handling the ONT tonight, as Maet is away.

Well, genghis was far more of a thread-nanny than you, ace, or any of your other bloggers. Perhaps s/he is just a worry wart, I dunno.
But genghis seemed to take issue with a lot of content that passes muster with everyone else, here.
Also, I have seen genghis has insisted on staying on-topic in a few threads. That is something very very seldom seen around here. We chat in the threads and let's face it, there's only so much one can expound on a certain topic without repeating earlier comments or the main post.
Yeah, that's what rubbed me the wrong way -- Genghis' concern for staying on topic in a thread.

I just turned on 1984. It's about an hour in and at the point where Winston Smith and Julia "bond" to one another. Before the event, Julia asks Winston to turn around and not to look until told. He turns when instructed and finds Julie in a dress, with bright red lips and rouge applied to her cheeks.
Later, as Winston Smith is writing in his journal, I wondered...where did he get the journal?
In the bleakest of times, assuming that the very basics of existence are provided/available; food, water, shelter... what comes next in the heirarchy of needs?
Love? Beauty? Art? The need to document or to express one's thoughts and emotions?
If one accepts their impending loss of freedom and becomes complicit in the forfeiture of said freedom, what does a man turn to for sustenance? God, of course, woud be the answer for many but as humans, and part of the human existence here on earth, there are earthly desires as well. How do those rank?
Just a little question for an otherwise sunny Sunday afternoon.

I'm familiar with Maslow's pyramid, but I believe that a great deal of his pyramid depends upon a somewhat free society to achieve much beyond the first rung.
On a daily basis, when one awakens to a desperate situation, what do they crave?
I was thinking how incredibly important something such as paper and pen would be. Or how in the midst of desolation, how a wildflower might be the most beautiful vision on earth.
Maslow's pyramid does not attend to the day-to-day needs of man, particularly not to a man who has lost most of the freedom to decide his fate.

If you get most of your news and stuff from RSS feeds and you use FireFox, Feedly is fan-damn-tastic. You can find it at www.feedly.com.
The other tool--Windows Live Writer--is an off-line blog posting tool. It downloads your blog's theme and then you edit the page as if you were looking at your blog. Very cool. My blog is hosted by Blogger, and its WYSIWIG editor is um.. Ok. Live Writer blows it away, and it has a few neat plug-ins available for it as well. The only thing lacking is the ability to edit a post after publishing, and the delayed posting feature is a bit quirky. Google "windows live writer" and one of the first links is the Microsoft download site.
I use Feedly to find breaking or interesting news, and then I drag and drop links, videos and other content into the blog post and mash the publish button. It has made life a lot easier. It used to take me a half hour to find something interesting, link sources, format quoted material, upload pics, etc. Now it's matter of minutes.

As a man's world shrinks around him, that is when he has fewer and fewer opportunities in front of him, his priorities are still first and foremost survival.
What changes are the value he puts on the niceties in life. The simple things, if you will, will increase in value. The pyramid remains in tact; however, the levels or goals have diminished.

When the healthcare market reflects both consumer utility and the consumer's budget constraint, prices will escalate until the third-party payor refuses to pay any more. At that point, "rationing" occurs as the third-parties (be they government or private sector insurers) attempt to allocate services in a market that is failing to clear.
In other words, we need to get rid of employer- and government-paid healthcare insurance altogether, and force the market to incorporate consumer utility, consumer budget constraints and healthcare providers' marginal costs. Until then, the system will remain broken and ObamaCare will only make it worse. Obamacare makes it worse by substituting an inefficient government system of allocation with a less inefficient private sector one.

We're relegated to cable (comcast) this year WHICH BLOWS CHUNKS, but the lovely trees on this lovely lot of the house we're renting blocked the dish. So no NFL Sunday Ticket this year - ugh! Trust me, if I owned this place I'd be out with a chain saw in a heartbeat.

I know an old salt who hangs cabinets and had a crew, a nice house and a decent life four years ago. Now he lives in his truck and doesn't have a dime. I asked him what his retirement plan was and he said he would drive his truck into a concrete overpass support at 70mph. That he had life insurance and his kids were the beneficiaries.

they're hedonistic idiots to be sure and maybe karma does say they deserve what's coming but for the New dealers to knwoingly play them like they did back in '64-'68 in codifying SS withholding into the general fund to artifically make the budget look more balanced is a borderline sin....

I can relate. I seriously have reached the point where I figure there is absolutely no reason to lead a careful life and plan that far ahead. We'll avoid becoming a burden on others, but as for hopes of planning for any kind of comfortable retirement, forget it. I think we'll take up rock-climbing, cliff-diving, and parasailing when we get to a certain age.

Whereas their Dads and moms when faced with evil did their duty with aplomb and cheer the boomer decided "communism ain't really so bad and by golly MY LIFE is too important for a draft, or to fight the other guys" in far too great a number.....

The foundation for the all the ills we have today was put in Place by FDR in the 30s and that was done by the gas light crowd. It was expounded on by LBJ in the mid 60s and that was done by that fabled "greatest generation".

From 'Doogie' To Daddy: Neil Patrick Harris & Partner David Burtka Expecting Twins
Access Hollywood - August 15, 2010 2:20 AM PDT

On Saturday afternoon, the "How I Met Your Mother" star confirmed via Twitter that he and partner, David Burtka, are expecting not one, but two bundles of joy.

"So, get this: David and I are expecting twins this fall," Neil Tweeted. "We're super excited/nervous/thrilled. Hoping the press can respect our privacy..."
Just as Neil announced the news, photos of the actor and David, who is a fellow thespian (and cook), surfaced showing the happy couple enjoying themselves on Saturday afternoon at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, Calif.

1) the FBI engaged in what was then and would still have been had dad not been politically connected 'acceptable behavior"
2) when I say "rehabilitated' you are aware he was a serious force in Chicago politics I am certain...he acted as something of a gatekeeper for liberal politicos
3) the argument can be made Clinton was also "rehabilitated'
when I say 'gave them a pass" I mean the boomers seem to have elected those people in the various areas despite their past.

There seems to be a common thread here involving "commies took over". I think it has something to do with the size of the town.
Once a town gets larger than about 35K people it starts becoming a haven for the "non-working parasite crowd". They in turn vote in the commie leadership to make sure the bread and circuses continue to flow.
Soon all the streets smell like piss, you have to have an armed guard to walk the street, and the entire tax base has moved out of town.
The only thing that keeps the town going is an influx of federal money from that the communists in DC have extorted from the rest of the country.

There was supposedly a 'rejuvenation' of mid-town (basically south of the bus station) a few years back. That pretty much died with Bill White declared Houston a sanctuary city and gave the criminals free-reign. All that new development next to the wards turned into abandoned shit.

No butt hurt here and I realized SS was doomed after the 3rd tax increase "fix" which congress immediately spent all of and then some.
In actuality, the MFM is wrong about SS being in the "red". It has trillions and trillions of dollars in congressional IOUs.
What we need to do is levy a special 95% tax on all wealth of people who voted to spend that money. A tax on them and their heirs to help pay off those IOUs.

Libs are so tolerant and interested in engaging in open discussions, aren't they?
A pal of mine from Indiana was in KC recently and posted on his Facebook that the RNC was in town. He saw John Sununu and asked his FB friends for suggestions on what to say about it. Now I know this guy is basically a lib, but he's kind of a nice guy, into geeky things (like SCA) and whatnot. Anyway, what followed was a set of the most outrageous set of "suggestions" including pissing on the Republicans etc.
So eventually I post "Hey, JOHNDOE, don't you know any Republicans? There are quite a lot of them. They vote and everything." To which he replies in a somewhat sheepish and friendly way.
But, get this, several of his FB friends (people I don't know from adam) blocked me. I know this because I used to be able to read their comments, but now I just see reference to them on the threads and can't see their pages any longer.

Sometime in the future:
The Obama sheeple believed that Emperor Hussein Louie , Queen Nancy and Prince Harry’s socialist fascist policies had been visionary and brilliant and would have soon succeeded in reshaping Amerika, except for being betrayed by devious bloggers such as the seditious Ace of Spades and his fellow travelers, the infamous ‘Stab in the Back’ theory. (Similar to the myth and betrayal theory [Dolchstosslegende] popular in Germany in the period after World War I which attributed Germany’s defeat to a number of domestic betrayals instead of failed geostrategy.)
This ‘Stab in the Back’ theory would become hugely popular among many neolib internet web sites such as DailyKos and HuffintonPuff and neolib radio talk show hosts and many neolibs in the MSM who found it impossible to accept the fact that Emperor Hussein Louie, Queen Nancy and Prince Harry’s socialist fascist policies had been very ill advised.
During the rapid decline of public support for these socialist fascist policy fiascos, many Neolibs became obsessed with this idea, especially laying blame on what they called “traitors”, “reactionaries”, “Zionists”, “capitalist pigs” and “Bible clingers” in America for undermining the socialist fascist effort. To the Neolibs, and so many of their followers, their fellow Americans, the clear majority of whom did not support Emperor Hussein Louie, Queen Nancy and Prince Harry’s socialist fascist policies, would become known as the ‘Reactionary Criminals’.

I think a lot of people would be happy to live in the city where you can do stuff and not even own a car which is a huge expense. But the commies have simply made it too costly to live there through a variety of things.
Things like being soft on criminals, taxes, rent control, green spaces, and the list goes on forever. Speaking of which I laughed this morning at an article on Fox concerning a "small town" in SC that was passing another anti-immigrant" (illegal) law. They were talking about Summerville which is about 15 miles down I-26 from Charleston.

I've never been to San Fran or, for that matter, California, but folks sure do make it sound unappetizing.
A few days ago FNC did a bit on Venice Beach, and it was appalling. I'm glad I was listening in the truck and not watching it on t.v. because I can only imagine what the folks looked like.
They were talking about how the homeless have created permanent RV "communities" on the streets there. And, not just on the beaches, but into the neighborhoods as well. They are pooping in the homeowners' yards. When they interviewed one jackass he said, I swear... "If they don't like people using their yards, then they should put a porta-potty in their back yard. If they can afford $1200 a month rent, they can afford a porta-potty."
Talk about shit... I damned near shit my pants from laughing.

I went to SF numerous times in the early 1970s, and loved it. It's a beautiful city, and at the time the quirks of the natives were fun and harmless.
At the same time, I was living just a few minutes' walk from Venice (CA), and dated a girl who lived there. It, too, was eccentric in a harmless way; some of the same characters you can find today (when you wade through the various low-lifes and hangers-on who have "discovered" the place since) still hang out on Ocean Front Walk.
The day-to-day wackos aren't the problem...it's the "tolerance"-pushing left-wing nazis who screw things up for people who are different yet somehow able to coexist with more mainstream folks.
Hose both places down, send the friggin' libs back to their flower-painted VW buses and est seminars, and both could be wonderful again.

Damn right. Can you believe all those Earth-killer farmers want to hog all the water and kill that tiny, soon-to-be-extinct fish? The gall.
Every day that goes by convinces me the American borders will change in our (born in '72, too) lifetimes. If we don't die in the camps, that is.

Oh, one more thing: from what I hear (I'm not anywhere near there -- or California -- any longer), $1200/month wouldn't rent you a mailbox in Venice or Santa Monica these days.

Broccoli cheese rice, spinach salad, and a falling-apart tender pot roast that's been cooking since before I went to work. Damn I love slow food.

What the hell do they do about their children? Hold it a minute, honey. You can't play in the yard yet. Daddy has to go out there with the plastic baggies, the Lysol and the water hose first.

Off-topic, again, but after test-driving a 2010 Grand Cherokee - after having driven the 2011 earlier in the week - there is no comparison. Mr. Y-not is going to try to get into one, if he can get a good enough deal on a Laredo. 'Wish we could afford the fancier trim model but we just can't. We like it better than the Lexus RX350, even in terms of the ride.

I rented a place out in Union City for $350/month but that was 25 miles down the road. I can't imagine what an apartment in Venice Beach rents for now. You may be able to get a small dump for $1200/month.
Hey, was that a joke? Rent a dump so someone can take a dump?

Turns out to be a fine place to retire to,although not MY choice. The Committee decided we needed to be closer to the kids, so here we be. Being a redneck from a small town anyway, the fit (for me) is fine.
And the major malls are close enough to keep the city-born love of my life happy.

I have the 2008 Rocky Mountain Edition Grand Cherokee, 4x2, 6 cyl. and I couldn't love it more. Consumer Reports consistently gives it the lowest scores among SUVs, which is surprising, because everyone I've ever known to own one sings high praises. If I were to buy a new vehicle, I woudn't hesistate to buy another.
As for the prices...you can negotiate a faaaar better price than you may think. I you wait and purchase at the end of the model year, shoot for about 30% off sticker price.
You'll be surprised.

We would love to do that and that's why we test-drove the 2010 (there are huge incentives on the 2010s right now), but it really doesn't hold the candle to the 2011. At least not for our purposes. Mr. Y-not needs something that will cruise on the highway really comfortable, but that will not blink twice about going up a rugged, unfinished road in bad weather. And we would enjoy the chance to be able to be more adventurous in our travels.
I *think* we can afford a slightly equipped Laredo, certainly with the U-connect feature, but maybe with the back-up camera and a few other goodies. We'll see. If not the back up plan is a certified used RX350. There's a lot of those available around here. Apparently the rich folks lease them for a couple of years but only use them at Park City, so they tend to be low mileage and in great condition.

I hope you can get just what you're looking for. Two options that came with mine that I never thought I'd use have been use to no end: remote start and heated seats.
Here in North Florida, it doesn't often get cold, but when it does it's miserable. I can park my truck in the lot and then start it from the 27th floor. It's either toasty and warm or refreshing and cool by the time I get to it. And, my mother, during her last year of life, was constantly cold, even in the Summer. I could turn on the ac, close her vents, and turn on her heated seat and we were both comfortable.
Somethinf else, I love the electrical plugs. No more inverters or extra chargers necessary.
Posted by: Ms. Benes, if you please at August 15, 2010 02:15 PM (eczD3)
Yeah, I expect we'll use those in Utah. They also have heated mirrors. Pretty cool. Yeah, and the real plugs/outlets plus the U-connect/wireless internet thing are cool too.

I have heard through the grapevine that the gov owned car companies are starting to obsolete replacement parts for their products in as little as four years after said vehicle was produced.
So..Buy a new car/truck today. Scrap it in 4 years.
At least you can still get some parts for an older ford chev for now.
But I wonder..For How Long?

Unbelievable.
When my mother was approaching the end we got Hospice involved. One of the things that they strongly encouraged was to conduct research and make make funeral decisions early. I just couldn't bear it. They told me that making arrangements with a clearer mind, in advance, would not speed up my mother's death. In the end my mother had made it clear that she wanted the simplest cremation available and that's what I provided. Hospice was not allowed to make a recommendation of services, but did have a business card handy. I went with that company and have no regrets. Her memorial was held at her best-friend's home.
Looking back, I realize just how maliable we are during such a time. The vultures who seek to make a prime-rib dinner of us while at our weakest and most confused state will have to face justice one day. Unfortunately, for now, the unions are calling the shots.
When my time comes, I want my daughter to do the same for me: Keep it simple. The last thing I want her to do is go into debt out of guilt or obligation.

Maybe the people back then knew something we -- and the media -- don't know today?
The mistake made in WWII was that no one in authority bothered to notice the Japanese who came to this country, became citizens and learned American values were active supporters of the USA.
If there are any such people among the Muslim population today, putting allegiance to this country ahead of their obeisance to a primitive and often savage system, they're damn hard to find. I know they exist; I'd feel better if they were as open about it as the Japanese-Americans of the 1940s.
I'm not sure I'd be against booting non-citizen Muslims the hell out of the country.

The first week at my new restaurant was a long one. The kitchen hits 118 degrees (measured by the meat thermometer that hangs at eye level) and it's the most fast paced job I've ever had.
Thankfully, the girls are cute and I'm employed. It's a good kind of tired.

Thanks, Y-not. I hesitate to call myself a chef as I've had no formal training but I have learned under some amazing chefs. The food tends towards upscale using French techniques but the owners let us be creative. It's a 200 year old inn and pretty fun to work at, so far. No crazies yet.

372 I've been tempted many a time -- but the administrators on the site are 1)pretty cool; it's like an AoS for horse folk; 2) a lot of the people are pretty conservative anyway; 3) the owner of the place is a personal friend. I don't really want them having to deal with the hassle.
Besides, I can handle myself relatively well on there -- it just gets really, really old.

The truth is that a little over 100,000 people of Japanese descent were relocated from a 50 mile corridor along the West Coast. 1/3 of which were actual Japanese citizens who had been caught in the U.S. at the start of the war.
They were relocated to communities in the interior where available and compensated for lost property. Some were placed in communal camps as a temporary measure until community housing became available.
The second generation American citizens were allowed to come and go from these camps as they pleased and were urged to move out if they found a place away from the coast. Actual Japanese citizens were kept in camps but they were not ringed in barbed wire.
The relocation was based on actual intelligence findings that there were thousands of spies mixed in with these people who could be relied on for intelligence for the Japanese military.
Counter that with how Americans were treated in Japan. They were placed in actual prison camp and treated like POWs. American women were used as "comfort women" for the Japanese military.
As with all else the MFM spreads it is all lies and distortions. The sad thing is that 50 years from now only the people who actually take the time to research obscure texts will know the truth. The media will have obscured all. It is already happening in front of our faces.

Sven, I would say that I realized that I would probably not reap the benefits from SS and Medicare, even though I'd been paying into them, when I was working for a medical clinic in CA and there were several elderly patients from China, India, Russia, etc., whose children lived in CA and with whom they were brought to live, who were receiving Medicare and SS checks who hadn't themselves paid one cent into either.

You can get the headlines from here. You just have to use the "syndicate this site" link from the minx.cc pages (like this one) rather than the mu.nu home page.
I asked Ace about that a while back, but I think he's too shy to have his site syndicated, because he never never answered.
The HA headlines for the blog and top pics are standard Atom feeds, but the others aren't. That said, you add enough RSS feeds and you'll get the news before it shows up there.
I now have about 160 feeds, organized into 14 pages. Feedly is awesomely awesome.
