It's cold here. My wife sent me out to get a movie to cuddle up and watch together being Valentines Day, and all.....

...apparently she doesn't consider Zombieland very romantic

Who knew?

15 years and I still don't have a handle on this shit

8 The Olympics blow.  I tuned in for 10 minutes yesterday, what will be the only ten minutes I watch.  I am not kidding when I say it was two ski jumps, four minutes of commercials... two more ski jumps and four more minutes of commercials.  NBC can lick the weld as far as I am concerned.

11 I know this isn't on most peoples' radar today, but BMW/Oracle just decimated the Swiss catamaran, Alinghi, to win the 33rd America's Cup in  Valencia, Spain!  The America's Cup is coming home, baby.

Posted by: jl at February 14, 2010 09:25 AM (07VdF)

12 The events, I'm sure, are wonderful.  But the fact that half of every hour is dedicated to commercials and of the remaining half hour 15 minutes are unrelated to sports action... talking heads, human interest stories, etc., makes it a colossal waste of time.  I'll probably TiVo the snowboarding events and be able to watch ten hours of coverage in an hour and a half.

Posted by: GT at February 14, 2010 09:28 AM (Vyrg6)

13 jl:  It is fucking crime no American channel covers that.  I was about to check the web for results; I am thrilled we have the Cup back.  Ellison put his sizable wallet where is sizable mouth is.

More AGW information: CLIMATEGATE U-TURN: cornered rat, Professor Jones, admits no global warming since 1995; and that if Medieval Warm Period proven to be worldwide, then (alleged) current warming not unprecedented. (Also admitting that there was a MWP in the Northern Hemisphere.) Claims his lost data is because he's an absent-minded professor.

This is the express reason the Olympics are on a three hour east coast delay even though they are taking place on the west coast. NBC can squeeze out as much commercial time as possible by doing that.

Posted by: Blazer at February 14, 2010 09:34 AM (t72+4)

18 The commercials definitely blow. I recorded yesterday afternoon's action and watched in half the time, max.

Doctor Who writers and actors admit to trying (unsuccessfully) to subvert Thatcher government. Deluded f*ck thinks it was them speaking truth to power just like artistic antigovernment types in Czechoslovakia.

GT,

Yes, Thanks Larry for hoisting Bertorelli own his own petard.  Did you know that www.americascup.com is replaying the video of the entire race every 3 1/2 hours?  Watch some of it if you have the chance. The boats are AWESOME!

Thanks for the advice, but I don't like tinyurl et al.

Dr. Spank,

Remember, the last time a catamaran competed was with Dennis Conner.  The Oracle trimaran has a wingsail that was used way back in Conner's day.  That wingsail is what made the difference this competition.

27 jl:  Thanks for the tip.  I know that yacht racing isn't everyone's cup of tea, but is running Sportscenter 14 hours in a row a better programming idea?  How about The World's Strongest Man from 1999?  For fuck's sake show the Cup!

"Doctor Who ratings plunged from a high of 16m, when Tom Baker was the Doctor a decade earlier, to 3m and the show was taken off air twice during the late eighties."

So they failed in their goal. Failed so badly that no one even noticed. They also failed to entertain, dropping ratings by 80% and getting the show cancelled.

  Geniuses, every one of them.

Lawra had a whole thread to remind you too.  All is not lost.  Just go out and personally buy a big bouquet of roses and either cook dinner or take her out. It'll make her feel real bad.

Posted by: curious at February 14, 2010 10:01 AM (p302b)

33 You're welcome, GT.  I think the problem this year is that it is best 2 out of 3 races.  The first race was Friday and the Cup was won in the second race today.  Too much preparation involved for only 2 races.

Posted by: jl at February 14, 2010 10:02 AM (07VdF)

34 We were all just discussing that we don't remember an olympics with this many athletes getting injured and there has only been one day of competition.

Posted by: curious at February 14, 2010 10:03 AM (p302b)

35 The guys on NBC have been talking about "the conditions" in every sport.  The mountains are either too icy or too slushy.  The rinks need the zamboni after every race, the lights and the crowd are causing the ice to melt and in speed skating I gather you need rock hard ice.

38 Well, maybe if the douchedozzles at NBC has used candles to light the broadcast booths (as they have in the past ) global warming wouldn't have caused poor ice and snow conditions in Vancouver.  (Let us for a moment disregard the carbon output of flying all those announcers and equipment into Vancouver.  The candles make all of the difference.)

40 @31, well my original plan was to give her a day off of cleaning.. I did clean up.. but she didn't notice because my 3 year old and 6 year old exploded all over the place again. So I tried to get a hold of "The Maids" and have them come in and do a head to toe cleaning of the house, but for some stupid reason, i kept thinking Vagina Day was on Tuesday and I was set for monday.. So techincally, I didn't forget, but I did to her, so that's all that matters now. I'm not interested in making her feel like "da poop".. just want a smile. She's a CPA and it's been one helluva tax season.

41 Posted by: UGRev at February 14, 2010 02:11 PM (862vz)

Oh I know a lot of CPA's they are burning out already.  People are so afraid of the IRS and their newly hired that even people who did their own taxes are now seeking assistance.

Ah, that is a sweet gift.  She will really appreciate that.  3 and 6, tough years, demand a lot of attention.   I think sometimes we women just want the little bouquet...sitting there, for us to look at.  Makes no logical sense really but it's the emotion of it all.

Posted by: curious at February 14, 2010 10:28 AM (p302b)

42 We were at the ex-in-laws for Mother's Day when ex-husband and his dad went to get a movie for us to watch.  Guess what movie they got?  Arachnophobia, for cryin' out loud!  The women in attendance got back at them by leaving and going shopping and spending their money!  Hah!

And, Mark Martin rocks!

43 "Millionaire Is Giving Away His Entire Fortune"""For a long time I believed that more wealth and luxury automatically meant more happiness," Rabeder said. "I come from a very poor family where the rules were to work more to achieve more material things, and I applied this for many years."

After a while, however, he felt he was working "as a slave for things I did not wish for or need," adding, "I have the feeling that there are a lot of people out there doing the same thing."

What brought him to his current conclusion? A three-week vacation with his wife in Hawaii, plus gliding trips to South America and Africa left him with feelings of guilt, he said, and the sense that there was a connection between his wealth and the poverty of the people he saw.

"It was the biggest shock in my life when I realized how horrible, soulless and without feeling the five-star lifestyle is," he was quoted as telling the Telegraph.

Since selling off some of his possessions, with lots more looking for buyers, Rabeder says he has felt "free, the opposite of heavy," which was the feeling all his wealth gave him.

All his money will go to the non-profit Mymicrocharity which Rabeder says he has set up to offer small loans to needy people in Central and South America, and to encourage development and self-employment in the region."

Why are all the liberals so guilty that they can't enjoy the rewards of all their hard work?

About that Rangers "marriage proposal"....the same thing happened at a Phillies game some years ago. The woman screamed at the guy, threw a beer on him, and ran out of the stadium. Turns out, it was staged by the team for kicks, the couple were just front-office interns.

There's a marriage proposal at almost every ballgame that I work. I hear the wedding march and I always yell out "just say NOOOOOO!!!!!".......

48 The store about the guy going down to nothing makes you wonder if maybe cause of the economy and market conditions he sees himself going down to nothing anyway so he made up the story, to make us think he is doing it himself, when really it would have happened anyway.
