Just got off Skype with our Marine in Okinawa. We knew he would probably be going to Afghanistan in January, but he freaking volunteered to go.
Our only child, said, "Hey,the guys coming back said there's not a whole lot going on over there now. I'll just be ferrying supplies to the FOB's.
D'oh and I sat with our brave faces on, and now I just want to cry. I'm proud of him, but dammit.

It's difficult on mom's, but young men are inherently over protective of family and country.
My three tours in Asia tortured my mother, but she remains alive today at 97 and thankful for my survival. I am thankful for being allowed to serve this great nation, and your son feels the same way. It's the greatest honor known to man, and it's truly a calling of the highest order. It will all work in the end.

The last young Marine to come home to Savannah in a box a few months ago, was a young pilot, based in Okinawa, who volunteered to go to Afghanistan.
Well, we held D'oh Boy's kittehs up for him to see. He loves "his babies" as he calls them.

I can sympathize with you on this; my oldest son is in the Air Force, and is completely excited about his chance to volunteer for a tour of duty in Afghanistan with his unit in December. He is a Security Forces airman. The thought of him being over there scares me to death. It is hard for me to reconcile the 19 year old young man he has become with the 6 yr old I used to fight "aliens" with in the back yard, on what just seems like yesterday. Many prayers and thoughts go out to you, ma'am.
