— Gabriel Malor The International Ice Hockey Federation is insisting that U.S. ice hockey goalie Jonathan Quick remove or obscure a "Support Our Troops" sticker on his helmet. They say the Olympic rules ban political propaganda.
Ryan Miller has also been told to remove the slogan “Miller Time” from his helmet while the third American netminder Tim Thomas had already placed a sticker over a slogan on his mask for the Vancouver Winter Olympics.IOC rules forbid political propoganda or advertisements being placed on equipment. “If the players don’t agree with the interpretation they can ask the USOC (United States Olympic Committee) to petition the IOC.”
Miller said he had agreed to remove “Miller Time”, which is also a popular beer company slogan, but might fight to keep “Matt Man”, a tribute to a dead friend from being taken off his helmet.
Some confusion about the political propaganda ban, though, is leading to grumbles from the players and fans. While insisting that "Support Our Troops" is impermissible, the IIHF has been mum so far on some traditional symbols of American propaganda, which will remain on the sides of Miller's helmet ("Miller Time" was on the back):

Apparently, players and the team are still discussing what to do or whether to appeal the instruction from IIHF. U.S. hockey's first game is against Switzerland later today.

They say the Olympic rules ban political propaganda.
hahahahahaha; If they truly DID enforce the rules to ban political propaganda I could go along with them. But they don't enforcew the rules against the leftists so they can enfrce it against the rightists.
But they will, which is why I say FK the Olympics, expecially the Winter ones. 90% of the "sports" are determined by judge's scoring. That means it is not a sport.

Hasn't the left been beating it into our simple little minds that you can support the troops, but not their mission?
I'm sure they'll be all up the IOC's ass with this explanation any minute now.

I think it is awesome that the 2010 Winter Olympicstm (brought to you by Visa) are not allowing any icky advertising to mar this otherwise pure and pristene display of sportsmanship and harmony.

Discouraging the goons of the world, and trying honestly to create an atmosphere of pure sport are commendable goals.
That said, if the ban is just used as a stick against the US and there is favoritism going on, we should invade the countries of the officials who are to blame, raze the countryside, and turn them into colonies after the old-fashioned European model.

Maybe Wyatt. You know they'll be accusations of NBC rubbing everyone elses noses in the fact that the US is #1 in medal counts. But, I don't care really, as I hate how the Olys are broadcast anyway, and don't watch. I may watch some hockey and some soccer during the summer games (maybe team handball if they broadcast it), but not much else.
what kills me is the time spent listening to people like Costas interview athletes. I don't watch the olympics for the interviews, I watch it for the sports. Events are going on non stop, you would think you would be showing them live, not tape delayed because you ran an interview with costas and some obscure athlete no one cares about.
Posted by: Ben at February 16, 2010 08:06 AM (wuv1c)
Heather - Colin Cowherd is a piece of garbage. He is one of many radio and TV guys at ESPN that have a huge chip on their shoulder about hockey. I'm sorry, but it basketball (thug life) and baseball (boring) are sports, so is hockey. Hockey even moreso, because at least they fight once in a while. If fights happened in baseball I wouldn't fall asleeo while watching it.

I think the U.S. leads the medal count with eight but we shouldn't really focus on that and make the other countries feel bad, it wouldn't be keeping with the spirt of the games or something.
Why do they even need to give out medals at all? Just playing the games should be what's important. Competing only ends up reducing the athletes self-esteem if they lose not win.
And that is not conducive to what's really important, which is eliminating war and having everyone live in peace and harmony with each other, all over the world.

Nope, the Russians haven't given up on winning.
It's just that there are ways to detect their doping methods now so they've lost their edge.
Additionally, now that pro athletes are allowed to compete, the Russians have lost that edge too because all of their athletes were essentially pros when our athletes had to be amateurs according to the previous rules.

Of course this whole brouhaha is probably the IOC being the anti-American, statist, pc bastards that they are. They're right up there with the freaking UN...and like the UN, they set the standards for overarching incompetence, fraudulent waste, obtuse ideas, and hatred of liberty and self-determination (which is kinda ironic considering what the Olympics started as, but logical considering the philosophical undercurrents).
I personally believe America should get out of both.

127 -- Meh, tell that to Adolf.
What it is supposed to be and what it really is are two entirely different entities.
I used to like to watch the Olympics for the off chance of seeing some sports that I don't get to see often. That has changed -- I don't get to see the sports anymore anyway; plus my personal fav venue is under constant threat of being taken out (and you have to pay per view or buy the videos to see anything but lame special interest snippets of it that usually advances the lefties' agenda); lastly the commercialized, propaganda machine is so over the top now as to be pathetic -- so why bother?
Last time I enjoyed the Olympics was the U.S. hockey team beating the Russkies; that was pure awesomeness. Should've quit when I was ahead with that. [and baseball is not a boring game -- it has to be seen in person though; tv ruins baseball; hockey is pretty awesome too though -- only team game besides baseball that's worth it anymore if you ask me]
