"Support Our Troops" Slogan Banned at Olympics
— Gabriel Malor

The International Ice Hockey Federation is insisting that U.S. ice hockey goalie Jonathan Quick remove or obscure a "Support Our Troops" sticker on his helmet. They say the Olympic rules ban political propaganda.

Ryan Miller has also been told to remove the slogan “Miller Time” from his helmet while the third American netminder Tim Thomas had already placed a sticker over a slogan on his mask for the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

IOC rules forbid political propoganda or advertisements being placed on equipment. “If the players don’t agree with the interpretation they can ask the USOC (United States Olympic Committee) to petition the IOC.”

Miller said he had agreed to remove “Miller Time”, which is also a popular beer company slogan, but might fight to keep “Matt Man”, a tribute to a dead friend from being taken off his helmet.

Some confusion about the political propaganda ban, though, is leading to grumbles from the players and fans. While insisting that "Support Our Troops" is impermissible, the IIHF has been mum so far on some traditional symbols of American propaganda, which will remain on the sides of Miller's helmet ("Miller Time" was on the back):

Apparently, players and the team are still discussing what to do or whether to appeal the instruction from IIHF. U.S. hockey's first game is against Switzerland later today.

hahahahahaha; If they truly DID enforce the rules to ban political propaganda I could go along with them. But they don't enforcew the rules against the leftists so they can enfrce it against the rightists.

But they will, which is why I say FK the Olympics, expecially the Winter ones. 90% of the "sports" are determined by judge's scoring.  That means it is not a sport.

15 Hey, you know that concept of individual, sovereign nations? Sorta political, right? I guess the whole concept of the Olympics where members from different states compete is a violation of its own charter, eh?

This is all so confusing. The politics just give me migraines. If only there were some escapist venue to pass the time... like sports for example.

24 Article in the paper over the weekend says NBC will lose $200mil on the Winter Games broadcast.  Seems they overbid on the Olys (the Summer and Winter came as a package deal) because they did not anticipate the economy going south as much as it did.  Disney (ESPN, ABC) and Fox did not bid so high (a more realistic bid), so they 'lost'.

Sorry GE.

56 Speaking of weird hockey helmets, I was watching the US-Russia hockey game a few weeks ago (in Russia), and the American goalie had Peter The Great on his helmet (Russian television really liked that detail). An explanation: An interesting moment about the previous, Russia – USA game, that made many people puzzled was that the USA goalkeeper had Peter the Great on his helmet (he plays for a Russian club). [JZK: True, Alec. U.S. goalie Robert Esche plays for SKA St. Petersburg. He was the only Europe-based player on the U.S. team.]

61 I don't mind this idea, if these rules ban ALL slogans, as long as they are enforced consistently and equally.

Discouraging the goons of the world, and trying honestly to create an atmosphere of pure sport are commendable goals.

That said, if the ban is just used as a stick against the US and there is favoritism going on, we should invade the countries of the officials who are to blame, raze the countryside, and turn them into colonies after the old-fashioned European model.

what kills me is the time spent listening to people like Costas interview athletes. I don't watch the olympics for the interviews, I watch it for the sports. I think the U.S. leads the medal count with eight but we shouldn't really focus on that and make the other countries feel bad, it wouldn't be keeping with the spirt of the games or something.

Why do they even need to give out medals at all?  Just playing the games should be what's important.  Competing only ends up reducing the athletes self-esteem if they lose not win.

And that is not conducive to what's really important, which is eliminating war and having everyone live in peace and harmony with each other, all over the world.

92 Meh.  The commentators seemed pretty pro-USA on the Nordic Combined event, and the Snowboard Cross event, and let's not even mention their anti-Korean bias in short track.  They did every thing but accuse the Koreans of cheating in the 1500 (where they did, of course, cheat)

94 dude, the koreans always cheat in the 1500, it's in the training manual.

I loved watching those two Korean skaters smack into each other, proving that cheaters never win and winners never cheat. I think the gold medal dude actually deserved to win, so it all turned out okay.

Costas looks absolutely ridiculous.

He's gotten a nice dye job on his hair, though.  It doesn't look disturbing in the least to see an wrinkly old guy with his skin stretched back and caked with 16 layers of makeup sporting jet black hair.

The BFF asked me last night if the Russians just gave up on winning medals.  Sure seems the way.~alexthechick

Nope, the Russians haven't given up on winning.

It's just that there are ways to detect their doping methods now so they've lost their edge.

Additionally, now that pro athletes are allowed to compete, the Russians have lost that edge too because all of their athletes were essentially pros when our athletes had to be amateurs according to the previous rules.

112 I would think that nationalistic symbols and propaganda would draw more attention and interest to the events. Who in this world watches Olympics more fervently than national sports? All national sports are filled with pomp, localism and propaganda.

115 Geez, if it weren't for the U.S. Military, some of the countries competing at the Olympics today wouldn't be in existence.  It's amazing what a bunch of bitter ingrates the "international community" is.

114 -- USA!  (Canada, you can win the silver; and if we don't win the gold, then you have to take it -- yeah, that's an order. lol).

Of course this whole brouhaha is probably the IOC being the anti-American, statist, pc bastards that they are.  They're right up there with the freaking UN...and like the UN, they set the standards for overarching incompetence, fraudulent waste, obtuse ideas, and hatred of liberty and self-determination (which is kinda ironic considering what the Olympics started as, but logical considering the philosophical undercurrents).

I personally believe America should get out of both.

Everything we don't like is banned.  Everything we like gets to stay--but only we get to have it.  Now shut up and obey.

Posted by: Greens at February 16, 2010 08:55 AM (mR7mk)

120 While I support our troops, I agree with the IOC that political propaganda should be banned. The spirit of the Olympics are about putting aside political differences and competing for the love of sports. If they allow "Support Our Troops", then they would have to allow, "Support Islamic Jihad" as well. And I don't know about you, but that would piss me off. And Freedom of speech is an American right, not an international one...and these games are international.

121

127 -- Meh, tell that to Adolf.

What it is supposed to be and what it really is are two entirely different entities.

I used to like to watch the Olympics for the off chance of seeing some sports that I don't get to see often.  That has changed -- I don't get to see the sports anymore anyway; plus my personal fav venue is under constant threat of being taken out (and you have to pay per view or buy the videos to see anything but lame special interest snippets of it that usually advances the lefties' agenda); lastly the commercialized, propaganda machine is so over the top now as to be pathetic -- so why bother?

Last time I enjoyed the Olympics was the U.S. hockey team beating the Russkies; that was pure awesomeness.  Should've quit when I was ahead with that. [and baseball is not a boring game -- it has to be seen in person though; tv ruins baseball; hockey is pretty awesome too though -- only team game besides baseball that's worth it anymore if you ask me]

Posted by: unknown jane at February 16, 2010 09:23 AM (5/yRG)

122 I appreciate the sentiment, but the IOC is correct. It was touchy in Salt Late City to fly the Twin Towers flag for the March of Nations, which was permitted, but this is over the proverbial line. Remember the controversy over Iran pulling out its wrestler when he was to face an opponent from Israel in Beijing, and the Black Power fists in 1968. This political statement may be something we support, but the non-politicizing of the Olympics goes both ways.

I think they should give a medal to everyone who participates.  That way, no one leaves with hurt feelings.

As for Miller's helmet, the way he's playing today, he can wear any damn thing on his helmet he wants.

127 I'm a Soldier, and I appreciate anyone who appreciates my service, but I'd advise this great hockey player to cover up the slogan and hit the ice.  His point has been made, it is appreciated, and he can continue to show his support to American and her troops by winning a gold medal!

Thanks, Jonathan Quick, for the show of support and know that you have our support as well.
