Islam Becomes Taboo Topic on TV in Wake of 'South Park' Threats and Times Square Scare
- FOXNews.com
It isnÂ’t worth endangering the safety of an entire staff or network by pursuing a storyline that Muslim extremists might find offensive, media executives and writers tell Fox411.com.
Don't mess with Allah. That's the new, unwritten code in Hollywood following the one-two punch of Islamic extremists' threats against the creators of "South Park" and the failed bombing attempt outside the cartoonÂ’s parent company, Viacom, in New York's Times Square.
In the current, supercharged climate, it just isnÂ’t worth endangering the safety of an entire production staff or network by pursuing a storyline that Muslim extremists might find offensive, media executives and writers tell Fox411.com.
Aasif Mandvi, a self-described “liberal Muslim” and the “senior Islamic correspondent” for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, said on air after the “South Park” threats that it would upset him to see the Prophet Muhammad depicted in a cartoon. But, he added: “Here’s what’s more upsetting. Someone, in the name of a faith that I believe in, threatening another person for doing it.”
But after the failed Times Square terror attack, "The Daily Show" asked Mandvi not to comment further on the matter, according to his spokesman. In fact, reps for the networks and television shows reached for comment on this article, including Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, FOX, NBC, and CBS, either failed to respond or asked to speak on background for fear of retribution.
And it isnÂ’t just comedians on fake newscasts who are being muzzled. One writer for a scripted drama fold Fox411.com that in one of his show's final episodes, there had been a minor plot point involving a Muslim extremist. Last week it was removed and the script was rewritten, he said.
Hussein Rashid, religion professor and religion dispatches associate editor at Hofstra University, said he is concerned that self-censorship will lead to a shutdown of the dialogue that must continue if people can be brought to understand the true meaning of Islam.
“I don’t think it is ever smart to self-censor,” Rashid told Fox411.com. “I am a big believer that the response to speech should always be more speech. I think this ‘South Park’ episode has been good for that conversation.”

Lawyers in Egypt call for Arabian Nights to be banned A group of Islamist lawyers in Egypt has called for the book Arabian Nights to be banned because they believe it is obscene.
The literary classic, which features characters such as Sinbad the Sailor, Aladdin and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, was described by the group as a call to "vice and sin".
Known in the original Arabic as One Thousand And One Nights, the collection of folk tales and short stories was first published in medieval times.
But a recent republication triggered controversy and calls to ban the new version on the basis of depiction of sexuality and use of offensive language, according to Al Arabiya."I was shocked at the offensive phrases it contains," said Ayman Abdul-Hakim, member of Lawyers without Shackles, the non-governmental group that filed a complaint with Egypt's Prosecutor General calling for the withdrawal of the new edition from the market and for banning the book altogether.
Mr Abdul-Hakim said the book was "a waste of public money" and that several references to sex in the book and were "calls to sin".
But a Writers' Union spokesman said the lawyers were behaving "like the Taliban".
the GOCP Supreme Publication Committee, which decided to print another edition after the first one was sold out, said in a statement that Arabian Nights was an invaluable cultural heritage that could not be confiscated.
Ahmed Megahed, GOCP Chairman, said calls to ban the book were an assault on freedom of expression.
"The fact that the first edition was sold out shortly after it was issued shows that Egyptians are avid readers and that they will not be influenced by a bunch of people who take advantage of Islam in order to suppress freedom," he said.
Mr Magahed added that the latest edition was based on an older version that was already revised by al-Azhar, the world's leading institution of Sunni Islam, and that there is nothing immoral or offensive about it.

So a caller on Rush's show today gave a good theory for the increase in the unemployment rate: some people whose unemployment benefits had run out and who were waiting for the next extension while it was held up in Congress dropped off the unemployment rolls as "non-seekers." When Congress passed the extension, those people had to again be counted as "actively seeking" in order to qualify for their benefits. Hence, an increase in the unemployment rate.

No, and that's the takeaway from this whole thing. The thousands of govt employees who devote their entire day to preventing this sort of thing FAILED. Our system failed; we have no intelligence, no way of protecting ourselves from these terrorists, apparently.
