— Purple Avenger 10 dead in Britain so far this winter.
...Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed that ten people have died after becoming infected over the last six weeks. The HPA confirms that the H1N1 virus is circulating again this winter....Undoubtedly coming soon to southern US destinations as global warming weary Brits come stateside to bask in the balmy 20 degree Orlando temperatures.

Also know that getting the influenza vaccine provides cross-protection against other flu and cold viruses. Getting the vaccination doesn't guarantee you won't get sick from those other diseases, but the duration and magnitude of your illness may be markedly decreased.

Crying wolf.
Not mentioning that any flu-like symptoms are "diagnosed" without testing as the "flu" and PC stipulates it be recorded as H1N1.
When HPA confirms via test results, their claim would at least have that for basis. /Too bad governments shot their credibility wad on Global Warming.

7 A large fraction of the people I know who get the flu shot wind up having a reaction to it that is severe enough for them to actually miss work or have to hit the bed for a day or two.
Ditto--- and when you work with an indigent population that has every bug out there, not gettnig your vacine is stupid. You WILL get whatever they have. No way around it.

Shoot, I shouldn't have added the "cold' (rhinoviruses) viruses part. My mistake.
However, there is evidence that one flu vaccination can provide moderate protection against related flu-strains, which can potentially prevent a brush-fire becoming a towering-inferno. Here's one paper from an Army study (open source).
Be warned, there are many cavorts with the study, as explained in the discussion. Also the population studied (US Army service members) is younger, fitter, and has higher rates of flu vaccination than the general public.

Percentage of healthy adults that die of the flu? I think you've bought into the media hype.
I'm not saying the at risk groups (elderly, children, immune-compromised) shouldn't get the flu. I'm saying that in my experience, the flu shot - which we all know provides really imperfect protection against "the flu" (because of the heterogeneity of flu strains and their inability to guess which ones will dominate any give season) - makes a fair number of people "sick."
A lot of us are allergic to thimerosol, the preservative used in most flu vaccines. I've found that the time I'd waste trying to get a doctor's appointment to get the right type of vaccine, when factored with the number of times I've gotten the flu, averages out to be about the same as the folks I know who get the flu shot and wind up in bed from a reaction and/or with the flu anyway.

Everytime I got a flu shot while in the service it took me out for two days. Other than that I had the flu twice in 40 years and it both took me out for 4. One was even after getting vaccinated. No thanks.

There is lots of hedging in that study. And ages were different, so I am not impressed. But your point about the military being younger and fitter is interesting, because that's exactly who died at the greatest rate during the 1918 flu. The theory is that they had no exposure to previous, similar antigens because they were simply too young. The old farts who survived had been exposed to something similar enough to the Spanish flu that it conferred some immunity.
But anyone who doesn't get vaccinated is an idiot. All of the tired arguments about thimerisol (mercury) and sickness caused by the vaccine and blah, blah blah is just a few steps away from truthers and 9/11 conspiracy theories.

Well, I don't know if you're an idiot, but you're sure a judgmental prick. It must be exhausting going through life meting out your sympathy based on your bizarre set of criteria for any given problem or ailment.
And, since you apparently have absolutely no background in biology or medicine, I will do you the favor of informing you that some people are allergic to thimerosol, a mercury-based compound formerly used in contact lens solutions. The allergic reaction has nothing whatsoever to do with the claims some have that thimerosol produces more serious health problems. However, it is of interest to note that the government has stopped allowing the use of thimerosol in new vaccines for children under age six, so apparently even Uncle Sam is not fully-convinced that the thimerosol concerns are baseless.

Actually not completely true. There was a "spike" around the 25 y.o. group but the largest, by far, death rate was still in the old and very young category.
If I am not mistaken, that spike in the 25 year range was attributed to the hardship conditions caused by the war for those fighting in it.
Posted by: Vic at December 13, 2010 06:16 AM (e4sSD)
I didn't buy into any media hype about healthy adults dying of the flu. People die of the flu. That's a fact. And older people tend to die more frequently. That's a fact. But healthy people who choose not to be vaccinated because of stupid fears of thimerisol (sorry, it isn't used in half the vaccine produced) or their other tin-foil hat theories are jeopardizing the rest of us.
Herd immunity is vitally important. So you choose not to get vaccinated? Great, except you could give it to someone who, through no fault of his own, doesn't have sufficient immunity to deal with the virus. And he could die!

That is a contributing factor. Also, there is a new line of thought about the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic - that it was bacteria, not the influenza viruses only, that caused the majority of the Spanish Flu deaths.
/New recruits weren't accustomed to the local bacterial flora, so when they contracted the flu, the bacteria made niches into the now-cleared epithelial cells of the respiratory tract and killed the victims via pneumonia.
Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at December 13, 2010 06:23 AM (9hSKh)
The curve is described a s a "W," with the additional peak among ages 18-40. The young and the old always die at greater rates, so that's why the Spanish Flu was unique.

Lots of those military deaths occurred in stateside military bases. And of course most of the deaths were among civilians.
I don't know the answer, but I would bet that many flu deaths are caused by the attendant pneumonia and other bacterial infections that are as a result of the weakening of the immune system and the general ass-kicking that flu causes.

I've always wondered, since the human flu shot targets rhinopneumonitis, if it had the same sort of efficientcy as the shot used on horses and dogs -- which in order to be really effective for animals in transit and exposed to different populations with regularity, has to be boostered every 2-3 mos. -- if that's the case, this once a year flu shot isn't enough and people are getting sold a bill of goods.
Posted by: unknown jane at December 13, 2010 07:00 AM (5/yRG)
Flu vaccine doesn't target rhinopneumonitis. It targets the flu virus (orthomyxoviridae). And you get a new vaccine each year because the flu changes each year. We get different strains, and some of those strains have mutated enough so that the immune system doesn't recognize them.

H1N1 is the flu strain formerly known as "swine flu."
H5N1 is the flu strain formerly known as "avian flu."
(I say "formerly known" because the mutations that occur as part of transferrence from animal to human hosts and then from human to human invariably changes the structure enough to make them distinct from the original animal-borne version).
The flu shot only protects against the five strains of flu that the WHO (I believe, or it might be the CDC) feels will be most prevalent throughout the world in the coming flu season. It is not a failsafe, and it may not protect you against any other strains of flu that might crop up in addition to those five. H1N1 caused such a panic last year because it was affecting young, otherwise healthy adults, who do not fall into the usual flu shot demographics of the elderly, the very young, those with respiratory and chronic illnesses, and those with deficient immune systems. It remains to be seen if the same is true of these ten new cases in Britain.

You target any distinction as foolish; you name yourself THE authority, and any difference of opinion as a basis to target as "truther" and conspiracy theorist. No variances, unless upon later reflection you determine, as Obama does with his shitty ObamaCare, to decide upon breaking your own authoritarian rule with an exemption to be determined on your own part. And when proven wrong, your lame excuse is that you're only joking.
“childhood obesity isn’t just a public health threat, it’s not just an economic threat, it’s a national security threat as well." ...has a familiar ring to your own rhetoric.
You're so stuck on yourself, you're glued to your pimple pussed mirror.

You really are a stupid ass when it comes to this topic. And that surprised me a bit because I recall you being rational about other issues.
Work on your reading comprehension before you play with the adults.
I made a simple declaratory statement: "I have no sympathy for anyone who gets the flu and hasn't been vaccinated." You don't like that? I don't give a rat's ass what you dislike. I pointed out some facts to buttress my statement, but you are too fucking dense to understand them. My "authority" was based on those facts; nothing else. As for your "compassionate conservative" comment? It is completely irrelevant and a non sequitur because I made no suggestion that the government become involved. I merely pointed out the stupidity of people who use pseudo-science to justify their avoidance of social responsibility.
I obviously got under your skin, so in a way it was successful. ;-)
