— Ace I guess traffic is down at LGF. So it must be time for Charles Johnson to post a substance-free entry in order to induce a lot of people to link to him.
I avoided this all day. I know that a lot of people are going to click over, and thereby reward him for doing nothing more than putting up a juvenile insult. All I can say is that you can't comment there -- you're either already banned, or will be banned the moment you comment -- so what is the point of clicking over?
If you "want to read the commenters," oh, for God's sake, what do you think the comments say? Charles Johnson only permits his most trusted cultists to post, so all the comments are of this variety:
nice snag Charles...maybe there is a future for your research skills at the Library of Congress!...this little blurb is a great context observation...what goes round, comes round...
[From Johnson himself, adding some much-needed nuance:] The only difference between this slogan and the religious right's current slogans is that they've learned not to use the term "race mixing."
...
Rotten. It drives me crazy that we still have the same kind of loons we used to have when my father was a kid. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
...
[Johnson again:] I've posted dozens and dozens of photos of Tea Party signs that are every bit as disgusting as the signs you see above.
But hey. Let's just forget about all that. Right?
...
[When someone objects that he shouldn't make the case that all tea partiers are anti-race-mixing racists, Johnson claims he hasn't:] And that's why nobody has made such a case.
...
Thanks for posting this, Charles. I'm sure you'll get a lot of hell from the people who think Limbaugh and RSMcCain don't have a racist bone in their bodies.
Particularly since the spitting/racial slurs episode, the baggers really have started to resemble previous angry mobs--lynch mobs, segregationist mobs, anti-immigrant mobs.
And so on. The tongue-bathing continues (with management's compulsion of tongue-bating, of course), all for a childish link-bait post that contains a single stupid thought -- and a though that the "brave" blogger Johnson immediately disowns to boot. Remember, right after posting a blogpost claiming that Tea Partiers were the new anti-miscegenationists, he immediately disclaims any intent to make that case at all.
So it's a post that not even Johnson will stand behind.
Here's the post in its entirety, so you don't have to click over, but of course you will, because so many of you are on pins and needles about what unexpected insight Sharmutra and Kilgore Trout will have about Johnson's post:
Tea Partiers, Circa 1950WINGNUTS | Tue, Apr 6, 2010 at 7:56:58 pm PDT
This didnÂ’t start with Barack ObamaÂ’s election.
Oh, and remember, Johnson continues utilizing the very special talents of noted censor/racial-slur-artiste Kilgore Trout, who spams the n-word on other people's sites when he's not busy banning anyone who disagrees with Mad King Charles.
And remember too -- what Johnson finds so positively reprehensible is people carrying Obama=Hitler signs, but apparently slurring the right as Hitleresque... I guess it's elevated or something.
What some stooge puts on a sign, Charles Johnson puts on his blog, but he calls himself clever for doing so.
There's an old saying that success is like a fart, only your own don't stink. So it is with political extremism, especially as practiced by paranoiacs like Charles Johnson. He lectures others on civility and moderation while sticking his face in his ass and burbling over how sweet his own farts smell.
I don't mind a bit of extremism here and there, but please, save us the lectures.
Incidentally, it's sort of time to note once again that all Charles Johnson ever did was take someone else's newsworthy work (Buckethead from FreeRepublic) and make a gif out of two bits of text. That bit of theft is his claim to fame.
I should also note -- this is a bit late, but what the hell -- that Johnson had a bad reputation among right-of-center bloggers. If you sent Charles Johnson a tip, he rarely gave you a prominent link for it. What he tended to do is steal the guts of your tip -- your story, your find, even your analysis -- and put it all up on his blog with only a perfunctory hat-tip at the end. Taking the whole guts of what you'd sent him and putting it up on his site, leaving nothing behind for anyone to click on with that useless hat-tip at the end.
Your tip, his traffic. Pretty much he's built his blog on stealing stuff from his betters. (And then, later, slandering his betters.)

From Michael Barone's fascinating piece comparing the 1994 and 1946 elections:
Recent polls tell me that the Democratic Party is in the worst shape I have seen during my 50 years of following politics closely. So I thought it would be interesting to look back at the biggest Republican victory of the last 80 years, the off-year election of 1946. Republicans in that election gained 13 seats in the Senate and emerged with a 51–45 majority there, the largest majority that they enjoyed between 1930 and 1980. And they gained 55 seats in the House, giving them a 246–188 majority in that body, the largest majority they have held since 1930. The popular vote for the House was 53% Republican and 44% Democratic, a bigger margin than Republicans have won ever since. And that’s even more impressive when you consider that in 1946 Republicans did not seriously contest most seats in the South. In the 11 states that had been part of the Confederacy, Democrats won 103 of 105 seats and Republicans won only 2 seats in east Tennessee. In the 37 non-Confederate states, in contrast, Republicans won 246 of 330 seats, compared to only 85 for Democrats.
By the way, eastern Tennessee was a redoubt of Union support back in the days of the U.S. Civil War.

Bull Connor was also a Democrat.
Posted by: rawmuse at April 07, 2010 07:33 PM (OQ3LO)
From The Encycopedia of Alabama:
In 1934, Connor entered the Democratic primary race for a seat in the Alabama House of Representatives. Claiming that his candidacy was a lark, Connor barely campaigned, but his name recognition as a radio personality helped him to win the election. Connor served in the legislature from 1935 to 1937 and introduced or championed bills, such as poll tax reform, that were popular with white working-class people and unions. He opposed tax increases and legislative pay raises and voted against an anti-sedition bill designed to stifle labor union activity. In 1937 Connor was elected Birmingham's commissioner of public safety, a position that gave him administrative authority over the police and fire departments, schools, the public health service, and libraries. Aligned with Birmingham's large business interests, Connor supported low taxes and limited government. To the white public, he presented himself as a champion of working people, a tireless crime fighter, and an uncompromising defender of racial segregation. He won reelection to the city commission in 1941, 1945, and 1949. In 1950, Connor ran unsuccessfully for governor and then returned to his work as a commissioner. He did not seek reelection to the commission in 1953 because of a scandal involving an extramarital affair and charges of police corruption, but he was voted back onto the commission in 1957. In 1962, he ran another unsuccessful campaign for governor.
Connor served as a delegate to five Democratic National Conventions (1948, 1956, 1960, 1964, and 196
. At the 1948 convention, he helped lead a walkout by Southern delegates in protest of President Harry S. Truman's civil rights policies. This action resulted in a split in the southern wing of the Democratic Party, with the dissenters becoming known as Dixiecrats.
A staunch and sometimes flamboyant white supremacist, Connor was known for making outrageous comments to the press and for instigating now-famous confrontations over Birmingham's segregation ordinances with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and U.S. Senator Glen Taylor. While apparently not a member of the Ku Klux Klan, Connor protected Klansmen who committed racial violence, including bombings. In 1961, he ordered Birmingham police to stay away from the Trailways bus station while Klansmen attacked the Freedom Riders, a group of civil rights activists who were touring the South to protest segregation. This attack, combined with his closing of city parks to prevent desegregation, the threatened closing of city schools, and Birmingham's worsening reputation in the national media, turned the local business community and a majority of the white electorate against Connor. In 1962, the citizens voted to change the form of city government, in part to remove him from office.
Along with Birmingham's two other city commissioners, Connor filed a legal challenge to the change in city government and remained in office until May 1963. During this time, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., in cooperation with local civil rights leaders, led demonstrations in Birmingham against racial segregation. Connor ordered Birmingham police officers and firemen to use dogs and high-pressure water hoses against demonstrators. Images of the resulting mayhem appeared on television and in newspapers throughout the country and helped to shift public opinion in favor of national civil-rights legislation. Images of the demonstrations are still regularly broadcast and published and have helped cement Connor and Birmingham as symbols of racial intolerance.
After leaving office in Birmingham, Connor was elected to two terms as president of the Alabama Public Service Commission (1964–73), the state agency that regulates utilities. He died as the result of a stroke on March 10, 1973. Unlike some white supremacist leaders of his time, Connor was unrepentant and never repudiated his defense of racial segregation.

My main sources of rightie news are Drudge, Instapundit, the Corner and Ace. Then, less frequently, places like HotAir, GatewayPundit, Commentary's blog. RedState some. I find the angrier I am on a given day the wider my reading is, and the more likely I am to dip into more intense blogs. Riehl has been good for that lately. Actually Ace started as one of my edgy, angry sites and has become one of my regular reads. I felt guilty reading Ace at first (yes, I'm naturally uptight and reserved). And Instapundit seems to have developed an angrier tone in the Obama era. If I'm feeling really angry I'll hit Free Republic, but I've usually calmed down by then.
Occasionally I'll go through the lists of top political blogs and read them for a few days to see if I'm missing anything. Typically everybody covers the same stories, though. Oh, McArdle and Marginal Revolution are sort of econ/political/policy blogs so they count too, I guess.

No, he really doesn't. Unless you think the addition of this motherhood-and-apple-pie clause actually makes any difference whatsoever in considering the history of Virginia during the Civil War:
WHEREAS, it is important for all Virginians to understand that the institution of slavery led to this war and was an evil and inhumane practice that deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights and all Virginians are thankful for its permanent eradication from our borders, and the study of this time period should reflect upon and learn from this painful part of our history; and...
I mean, if McDonnell hadn't added this, would the people of Virginia suddenly have gotten the idea that slavery was good? Maybe reinstitute it within their borders?
But McDonnell did intentionally include this:
WHEREAS, all Virginians can appreciate the fact that when ultimately overwhelmed by the insurmountable numbers and resources of the Union Army, the surviving, imprisoned and injured Confederate soldiers gave their word and allegiance to the United States of America, and returned to their homes and families to rebuild their communities in peace, following the instruction of General Robert E. Lee of Virginia, who wrote that, “...all should unite in honest efforts to obliterate the effects of war and to restore the blessings of peace."; and...
Because it's necessary to remind low-grade cretins like Charles Johnson that Southerners are Americans, too -- and not all the segregationists he attempts to paint them as with his 1950s Democrat rally photo.
The real purpose -- a valid purpose -- of Confederate History Month in Virginia is as McDonnell's original proclamation stated:
WHEREAS, this defining chapter in VirginiaÂ’s history should not be forgotten, but instead should be studied, understood and remembered by all Virginians, both in the context of the time in which it took place, but also in the context of the time in which we live, and this study and remembrance takes on particular importance as the Commonwealth prepares to welcome the nation and the world to visit Virginia for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Civil War, a four-year period in which the exploration of our history can benefit all....

So here is a question, let's presume that McDonnell was being dismissive of slavery. It has been gone for 140 years and race based slavery is not coming back.
Yet apparently McDonnell's actions are a BFD.
On the other hand, pretty much the entirety of the left is dismissive of the oppressive history of socialism. International Socialism was an existential threat until 20 years ago, and National Socialism of the modern European model is on the rise, most notably in the form of one Barack Obama. So why is this not a BFD?

How odd that douchebag ponytailed crazed lefties are comparing the teapartiers to pro-slavery sentiments when the ENTIRE POINT of the tea party movement is LIBERTY.
Christoph, as a Canadian, I know you don't understand that, but oppressive taxation, regulation, and government control are anti-freedom.
That asswipe at LGF should be asking why the black caucus and the white democrat pretenders aren't more anti-slavery/anti-socialist.
TEA parties and Slavery are complete opposites.
McDonnell didn't have to talk about slavery. Why would he have to pick out a specific policy when talking about historic generalizations? No one expects the democrats to flog themselves over opposing the civil rights legislation everytime they talk about the 20th century.

Race mixing is communism?
A common meme of the time due to the fact that the USSR made much noise about segregation and how America wasn't living up to its ideals. That and the fact that communists quite successfully recruited blacks into the communist party and other associated organizations.

That's because the communists for a long time were doing better than the liberals at improving the lot of black people. The Scottsboro Boys, for instance, the liberals didn't want to touch. The blacks accused of the crime were hoboes! Eww! But they were innocent, and the communists were the only ones willing to make a fuss over it.

... isn't something a forced apology covers."
You do realize, of course, that Virgina stayed with the Union until Lincoln called for volunteers to reunite the country by force, right? You also realize that part of Virginia seceded from the rest of the state in order to stay with the Union, right? While Virigina certainly had slaveowners, it wasn't THE BIG ISSUE for that state.

for the racist thing: I'm sick of it. Sick of it being shoved in my face, sick of the obsessing over it, which is kind of racist in itself.
There isn't an American out there who can claim to be pure anything -- and you have to include socio-cultural influence there too. We are all a mix of everything that's been put into this country, and in some regards we are the better for it: White Americans are not and cannot be European, not even British (just look at how differently our English sounds from what the Brits speak); no Black American can be African, and same goes for everybody else. Time we finally started realizing that and just came to call ourselves American (of course I like all the many ethnicities that went into me; it's even fun learning about them, but at the end of the day: I am not them; nor will I ever be...because I'm an American).
And personally, I'm kinda glad that Whitey, Blackie, Brownie, and Reddy got together. If it hadn't happend I wouldn't be here, and I suppose being here is better than not being here, or getting oneself born into some third world slum...so there ya go.
(no Yellow that I know of, but considering my family you never know, there may be some lone, unknown Asian person in the woodpile somewhere -- in which case, yippyyee ya yay; I'm sure they had just as much fun as the others did -- who, considering the size of my family, had a lot of fun with each other)

I feared that the whole Obama years would end up like this, with him being the divisive Marxist we knew he was -- which went completely against the way he was marketed to the country in '08 -- and then him and his supporters attacking us as racists for simply disagreeing with him and his far Left policies. Whether Obama and his supporters know it, they're only illustrating how pathetic they and their ideology are by taking this approach instead of trying to convince the public that they're right on the issues based on their merits. Just look at the healthcare bill. They -- especially Obama, who has proven that he is no leader -- couldn't convince a majority of the country that the bill was the right one to pass so instead of rethinking their assumptions and adapting their legislation, the Democrats simply ignored the will of the people and passed the bill as is, while, once again, calling those that opposed it racist.
At some point I would like to think that the rest of the country would get sick of the constant claims of racism by Obama & Co. But the Democrats have been cynically using this line of attack against conservatives somewhat successfully for decades so I'm not very hopeful that it will stop anytime soon.

Liberalism and conservatism are not new concepts. In past times, liberals were right on a few things and wrong on others. In 1950, it was conservatives who happened to be wrong on (some aspects of) race. I am specifically thinking of Strom Thurmond's anti-lynching campaign in 1948.
The liberals of their day were wrong in their desire to abolish literacy tests and property qualifications.
But this does not absolve conservatism of happening to be wrong on this instance in this place and at that time.

It is Dixiecrat racism which I'm pointing out. Again, these guys voted Thurmond, not Truman. Dixiecrats are the ancestors of Conservatives.
The Tea Party movement has Conservatives in it, but it is a larger movement than Conservatism. Which is good: because Conservatives are, still, wrong on a great many things; and, also, they make up a minority whom non-Conservatives largely despise and fear.
The Tea Party, when Conservatives are kept to a supporting role, is a libertarian movement. So, I do not condemn the Tea Party as a whole, as Charles does. I can however only report on what I saw.
I don't even condemn Conservatives, much. I just wish they would not lie about their origins. (Likewise, I wish liberals would not attempt to disown Woodrow Wilson, or Cromwell.)
Ideally I'd have Conservatives admit they belong to a tradition which includes segregation and slavery. Which they chose to renounce because segregation and slavery were bad.

In terms of biology, what we call race is simply a manifestation of the very same mechanisms of genetic inheritance that result in children resembling their parents.
Modern humans migrated out of Africa some 80,000 years ago. As these humans spread out over the world, genetic drift interacted with natural selection to create the physical distinctions that we normally associate with race. Some of these distinctions evolved as an adaptation to local conditions. Light colored skin is better for higher latitudes for example. Other distinctions are completely random.
While humans were spreading out over the world, there were also modern humans who didn't migrate out of Africa. This is why Africa has more genetic diversity than the rest of the world put together. The very same genetic drift that created the distinctions that we associate with race also took place within the populations of Africa. This is why the various tribes and peoples of Africa look so different from each other once you stop focusing on their skin color. They all have dark skin because living near the equator tends to select against the development of light colored skin, but in many other ways they are profoundly different. People from Somalia don't look anything like people from Kenya, even though they are right next door to each other. Yet both would be considered "black" by the standard categories of race.
So when I hear people start in on how we shouldn't judge people based upon their race, I simply remind them that what they call race is an arbitrary social construct. Race doesn't actually exist. The only thing that does exist is a huge family tree with many different branches.

That's Steve Sailer's definition. It's not a social construct, except insofar as one culture might define the colour "green" to encompass slightly different shades than another culture's definition. There is, still, a meaning for "green", which most people will agree to. Likewise, for "white".

Sadly the terms "liberal" and "conservative" have no real historical foundation to them anymore.
What it meant to be a Liberal in the 18th and 19th century is almost the precise opposite of what it means to be a Liberal in the latter half of the 20th century and now the 21st.
Marxists, who up until that point had called themselves various things, started calling themselves Liberals in order to confuse people and to steal the brand equity of the term. This ploy worked, but the long term consequence was not that their own ideas would be given new legitimacy under the banner of "liberalism," but that the term itself would become debased and devalued through its association with those broken ideas.
Meanwhile people who were actual true Liberals in the classical sense of the word were left without a name of their own anymore. Somewhere along the line leftists started referring to these true liberals as "conservatives" and sadly the name stuck.
So to talk about "conservatives" from the first part of the 20th century in the same breath as Conservatives of today just doesn't hold up. These two groups are not the same.
Leftists always try to label themselves using antonyms. They do the same thing to their opponents as well. So it is no surprise that leftists would call themselves "liberals" or "progressives" or some other nice-sounding name that is the antithesis of their actual nature. The only strategy they have ever found for converting a free society into a Marxist prison state is to pull a bait-and-switch. They pretend to be one thing and then do the opposite as soon as they are in a position of power. Obama, Pelosi, et al are merely the latest and greatest practitioners of this form of deception.
This is also why they cast true liberals as "conservatives" in the hope that they would come to be associated with bigoted social authoritarian types, a ploy that has sadly been all too successful. This is why some people confuse someone like Sean Hannity with the likes of David Duke, despite the fact that they would agree on virtually nothing beyond things like water being wet.

Green and white are colours, a question of eletromagnetism, a facet of objective reality. So of course there is agreement about them.
Meanwhile the idea that a "white" person is different from a "black" person is a socially constructed notion, one that is derived from tribalism and ethnocentrism, which are also social constructs.
A Somali and a Kenyan see themselves as distinct, whereas people from other parts of the world would see them as being the same. Both views are are socially constructed.
The virtue of America is that we harness the power of tribalism to define Americans of all creeds and colors as members of the same group. Our tribe is American. Identity groups such as Italian or Japanese or Irish are included in the definition of what it means to be American. The left works to undermine this by promoting the idea that Americans are different from one another based upon which sub-group they belong to. This is a ploy that Antonio Gramsci formulated when he extended the lies of Marxism to define the "victim" group along ethnic lines in addition to economic ones. Yet another evil scheme that has been far too successful.

You know where you can put your sanctimonious "wish they would not lie about their origins" comment, right? None of us were alive when slavery existed or when segregation was at its peak in this country so why should we even need to talk about these supposed "origins"? What does this accomplish? Many of today's conservatives (including moi) weren't even alive during the civil rights battles of the contentious 1960s. So we take offense when people try to constantly link us to these events in a cynical attempt to slander us and our ideology. I simply don't know what value is obtained for all of society by having individuals continuously acknowledging and apologizing for what happened in the past and was committed by others. This is true for all groups, especially ones based on specific races or religions. This appeal to conservatives to self-flagellate is purely a symbolic act meant to damage today's conservatism (i.e., the political opposition) and denigrate individuals that had absolutely nothing to do with the actions of others decades ago. As a white, Roman Catholic, conservative, I've pretty much had it with the attacks on me and my political ideology for the actions of others over whom I have never had any influence.
To me, our "origin" as modern day conservatives is based on the principles outlined by various conservatives who came to prominence in the late 20th century and early 21st century, such as Ronald Reagan, Jack Kemp, Milton Friedman, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas, among others. These principles include rugged individualism, individual freedom and liberty, smaller government, lower taxes, lower spending, strong national defense, free trade, adherence to the principles outlined in the Constitution, reliance on traditions and institutions that have helped create American exceptionalism, etc. We also find it a sign of strength for the country that our society has become more color-blind and that races and ethnicities interact and work together in a positive manner on a daily basis. Many of us that are conservatives have friends and acquaintances from all races, ethnicities, and religions, so we do not feel that were are required to apologize or cite our "origins" based on the actions of others, actions that are alien to us and that we would never support or agree with.
Let me just reiterate, judging people based on their race is not part of my "origin," make-up, or beliefs nor do I believe it is for a vast majority of conservatives. The Left are the ones that turn everything into a debate about race, even in instances where it not involved. Claiming that many of us are racist even when the issue of race has little or nothing to do with the specific issue being debated is not only pathetic, but it also the type of slander and divisiveness that is used by those that simply do not have the intellectual heft or critical-thinking ability to engage in an ideological or philosophical debate with those on the other side of the political spectrum. If they did, they would need to rely so heavily on the constant references to events of the past nor would they need to rely on slandering their opponents. The attacks on ALL members of the Tea Party are a perfect example.

I think where we differ is that I look at Conservatives as a cultural group. From that perspective they are the same. Same way the English still exist, and Muslims still exist - even though the English of the early 1300s believed in rather different things than the English now.
I do not think that Conservatives in all places and in all times believed in freedom and free markets. They always believed in freedom from foreign influence; but inside their community, not so much. Hence that picture from the 1950s.
By the same token, although I disagree with Conservatives here and there, although I know they believed in nasty stuff half a century and more ago, although I get angry at them when they say something that is clearly false - I don't hate them. That's like hating the French. It's the sort of ethnic crap I left Europe to get away from. Also, the liberals half a century and more ago weren't any better. There's even an argument that the conservatives had the better of the argument over civil rights, too, given how things have turned out. (Jim Crow or Detroit?) But most conservatives are not strong enough for such medicine.

A "conservative" movement that starts sometime in the 1960s? Curious.

Oh lookie the fucking trolls are out. How much is Axelrod paying you these days? Or were you one of the cannon fodder sent from Dummies United? If you see Axelrod, can you tell him to send us some trolls with IQs above freezing? The current crop is really boring us.

Wow.. might want to do some historical research before you spout off like that. You see, it's a very good bet that almost everyone in this 1950's picture is a member in good standing of the Democratic party.
It was the Democratic party that supported segregation, you idiot. Read a history book will ya? Your embarrassing yourself.

Tea Partiers were the new anti-miscegenationists
Heh. No doubt my Filipino wife would find that amusing.
Joined the Northern Illinois Patriots Tea Party chapter this month. May even make a meeting.

That "your own farts don't smell" is bullshit.
I love Yuengling Black-and-Tan, but it gives me farts so bad that I don't touch it anymore. I cannot imagine how bad it would be for me to disturb the bedclothes after a night's sleep under 600-thread-count sheets if I had been drinking the stuff the night before. I hate to think what it would do to my poor wife.
Upon finding the empty bottles, the coroner would likely rule it murder-suicide.

Pretty much most of what I wrote was lost on you, wasn't it? The only thing "curious" is your flawed logic and reasoning, as well as your desire to fit the evidence into your conclusions instead of letting the conclusions flow from the evidence.
As I wrote, the conservative movement shifted in the mid to late 1970s and began to take the form that exists today. Reagan becoming leader of the movement and the party in 1976 or so was the key event. Thus, your attempt to start the modern conservative movement in the 1960s when the racial tensions in the country were at their peak (and much closer to the time that the picture posted at the start of this thread by Ace was taken) is not only transparent but also intellectually dishonest. I guess the fact that many or most conservatives aren't racist isn't important to your conclusions, right? I would actually posit that a higher percentage of liberals are racist, considering that they spend so much time differentiating people based on race, whether its done for political gain or their need to look like they are more open-minded and caring. Many liberals today use minorities as pawns but, of course, they escape the "racist" charge with the help of their friends in the media. The media coverage of the Tea Party is a perfect illustration of how today's Left gets away with their condescension towards blacks and other minorities. See, unlike you, I'm not asking you to judge the modern Left based on the actions of other Leftists in the 1960s or earlier, but on their actions during the same timeframe as modern conservatives (i.e., mid 1970s on).
If you want, you can spend hours positing about how conservatives, including myself, are defined by the actions of people that took place before many of us were born, but how anyone can think of that as an appropriate, valid, and productive exercise is beyond me. Maybe after that, I can spend time linking ALL liberals of today to Japanese internment camps during WWII and Communist sympathies during the Cold War, which has about as much validity as what you're implying about today's conservatives and racism going back to the 1960s and earlier.
