— Ace Is this real? Or is this their claim, in order to reduce our troops' morale?
And if it's real -- where are they getting hospital needles from, exactly, and how do we kill the people selling them?
British troops risk being infected with HIV as Taliban fighters are hiding contaminated needles with their bombs.Heroin syringes as well as razor blades are being buried in the ground by insurgents in Afghanistan so that they prick bomb squad experts.
It is believed that the needles, used in Helmand province, are contaminated with hepatitis and HIV as the Taliban use increasingly 'despicable' tactics.
Protective Kevlar gloves have been issued to all Royal Engineer and Royal Logistic Corps bomb search teams.
Conservative MP Patrick Mercer, a former Army officer, exposed the tactic. ‘Are there no depths to which these people will stoop?’ he told the Sun.
‘This is the definition of a dirty war.’
At some point, the nukes are going to fly, and I'm going to be okay with that.
Al Qaeda Hoax? Commenters Ed and old dirty b/tard say the HIV virus is fragile and dies quickly outside a living human host and say there's no way to store it for long periods. Ed says it dies 20 minutes outside the body.

And this is a war with Iran.
If Iran nuked Israel or even New York, though, I would bet my life Obama wouldn't nuke them back. So it's a completely moot point. We are not in Afghanistan to win. It's a lot like Vietnam.
1: Leave the warzone because we won the war
2: Stay in the warzone in order to win
3: Leave the warzone because we lost
4: Stay in the warzone because Obama doesn't want to look bad, but without playing to win the war.
That's my ranking of our options.
I will sadly pick 3 over 4. We need to get the hell out of Afghanistan. We might as well just build a fortress with a runway for drones and keep our troops out of the action. We aren't winning, and that's why it's not in the news much.

I agree, and me too. I'm picturing a scenario in 3 or four years where the Allies quietly remove all of the civilians from an area of Afghanistan. Then flash-boom-mushroom-whoosh.
What do you think would happen after that? I mean (and no snark here) those two nukes really made Japan come to its senses. It might actually bring the world together on the good guys' side. But if there are any bad guys left and they set off a nuke here, some Americans will cry "we started it," "fair game," "an eye for an eye," etc.

Eh, I dunno. Being able to score some HIV-infected medical waste isn't a big sign of weapons capability. And this tactic of loading bombs with shrapnel coated with something isn't novel. The Palis used to load plastic places into their bombs, making them more difficult to detect in a victim and also coated shrapnel with warfarin (rat poison) to interfere with blood clotting.

"At some point, the nukes are going to fly, and I'm going to be okay with that."
You would think that if the worldwide Muslim ummah wanted to keep this from deteriorating into a full-on war between Islam and the West, they would turn against the Islamicists and get them to stop poking the sleeping dragon.
But maybe there aren't enough members (percentagewise) of the worldwide Muslim ummah who really are interested in preventing a war between Islam and the West. Maybe too many are indifferent to which side would win, and maybe too many are rooting for the Islamicists to take the West down a few pegs, and maybe too many are rooting for the Islamicists to win outright and institute a new Caliphate.
In any event, there's way too many outraged demonstrations against insults to Islam and way too many depraved terrorists inventing new ways to kill in the name of Islam, and far too few visible actions on the part of the moderates whom we have long been assured form the Silent Muslim Majority. If they don't start speaking up pretty damn soon, then I think you're right, Ace: nukes will fly and a lot of other ugliness will be unleashed in the name of simple survival.

It's not a good strategy, but it's a step smarter than just loading the needles into bombs, for all the reasons people have already described.

Survival of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (type-1) in Injection Syringes.
Clay SP; Heimer R; Jariwala Freeman B; Negioanu D; Griffith B. Int Conf AIDS, 1996 Jul 7-12, 11:1, 355 (abstract no. Tu.C.2522)
Abstract
Objectives: (1) To develop and deploy a whole blood quantitative microculture assay (WBQMA) able to utilize the small volumes of blood remaining in injection syringes after use. (2) To determine the duration of survival of HIV-1 in injection syringes. (3) To determine the viral load in syringes over the survival period. (4) To discern policy implications of the findings. Methods: A whole blood quantitative microculture for HIV-1 was developed and standardized to current PBMC quantitative culture techniques. Multiple syringes were loaded with blood infected by two wild-type strains of HIV-1 and stored in simulation of street use in accordance with ethnographic studies. Contents were removed at Day 0 through Day 28 and were cocultured with uninfected PBMCs for a maximum of 21 days. Testing for p24 AG in the supernatant, using Abbott kits, was conducted for viral load calculation. Statistical analysis included Chi Square, Median Test, and the Bonferroni Method for Multiple Comparisons. Results: Viable HIV-1 was cultured from syringes stored for as long as 28 days. 50% of Strain VS001- and 99% of VS002-loaded syringes were positive for viable virus; the overall syringe positivity rate was 75%. The two strains differed from one another by number of syringes positive per time of storage and by storage time specific viral loads (p is less than 0.05 and p is less than 0.01 respectively). Loads on Days 0, 1, 3, 7, 21, 28 differed (p is less than 0.05) from Day 14. Conclusions: (1) The WBQMA is capable of quantifying viral load from small inputs. (2) A 28-day survival time exceeds current estimates. (3) Load appears to be sufficient to effect transmission. (4) This survival time provides a scientific basis for needle exchange and supports the use of harm reduction techniques and the removal from circulation of used syringes and injection equipment.

Yes, what stueic said, the virus can live in a needle with blood for a period of time, a quick Bing search pulls this, more simplified statement up:
One place that HIV has been know to survive in is drug injection syringes since these are airtight and often contain blood from the injector.
Also, as others have pointed out, there is no shortage of HIV infected people in Africa, and as we all know there are many Taliban friendly regions there.
The only reason my BS meter is up is that this appeared in the Sun.

You can't get it (generally speaking) from a toilet seat, but you certainly can get it from being stuck with a dirty needle. And a jihadist doesn't need dirty needles to stay infectious for 28 days -- most likely that IED is going to get used within a day or two of its burial. If the ISAF forces detect the IED in that short window, then the purpose of the needles would be to make the sappers so anxious about touching anything near the bomb that they were driven to make mistakes that set the bomb off. Since IED sappers are rare and hard to replicate, killing one of them advances the enemy's goals as much as killing a score of infantrymen.

nursing does not inherently do anything to a human female's breast except maybe making the nipples a bit longer. And that's a good thing, let me tell you.

Think of the SAW movies. If the bad guys surround the buried IED with buried dirty needles, then they can make the bomb disposal techs have to go through extra effort and precautions to avoid getting stuck with the needles -- and their theory is that the extra effort, stress, anxiety and protective gloves may lead to the techs making mistakes that lead to more of the IEDs detonating during disposal.

stuiec is equipped with the facts, this is possible to do. Whether the Taliban is successfully doing it or it is misinformation they are spreading is debatable. What is not debatable is that it is possible to transmit the HIV virus through "dirty" needles.
The HIV virus can survive in human blood, the length of time it survives is variable based on conditions, but it is tenacious. If this was not true, they would have no reason to screen HIV positive people out of donating blood.
If you choose not to believe this, feel free to do a Bing search and research it yourselves.

In a biological medium, apparently HIV can survive a lot of abuse -- enough so that a company can separate out the blood clotting factors and process them into packaged materials for delivery to hemophiliacs, and the HIV can be alive in those products. The barrel of a hypodermic needle is a small test-tube for storing a tiny blood sample, and the blood in that tube protects the HIV sufficiently to keep it infectious for a while -- days, at least, unless the needle gets cleaned or baked.
Posted by: stuiec at June 09, 2010 03:14 PM (7AOgy)
They want to slow down the process to increase the resource cost for IED removal and up the chances for a spoiling attack. Mixing anti-tank mines with anti-personnel mines or a grenade underneath is (was) a common practice. Mines (and IED) should be covered by observation and fire to be truly effective. This is just silly crap, a secondary explosive device or prepared mortar barrage would be more effective, if Mo was so inclined or capable.
What it tells me is that they are getting their asses kicked. It take effort to build an IED; to protect those resources with something that can be removed using a good pair of gloves is desperation.

I understand your point and what Bing says. But as a first responder for many years, I had been taught that the HIV virus is very weak in relation to other viruses. IOW, I'm probably assured of getting infected from sharing needles with blood in them, getting a transfusion with tainted blood, having a large bleeding wound and getting infected blood on it, drinking breast milk with open bleeding sores in my mouth, or having a penis tear the walls of the anus and then ejaculating his tainted semen into same said anus. (Sorry, graphic I know.)

But it doesn't even have to work from a HIV transmission angle -- if the bomb tech starts feeling around the IED and gets stuck with a dirty needle, he only has to be thrown off his game by a small margin to make it far more likely that he'll accidentally set the bomb off. The idea isn't to give bomb disposal techs HIV infections that won't even take them off the battlefield, much less kill them in anything short of several years. It's to render them ineffectual in their duties through psychological pressure.

So the hypothetical is, if you reached around or under the IED and felt a sharp stab in your finger, and found a used hypodermic needle sticking out of it when you pulled your hand out, would that affect your concentration and the speed with which you carried out disarming the IED? Because apparently the tactic isn't needles inside the IED, it's needles in the dirt in which the IED is buried.
I can imagine countermeasures, like using a really powerful permanent magnet to sweep for the needles in the dirt -- unless, of course, the magnet had the potential to trigger the IED somehow.

Three days after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch government offered to help.
It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands.
The response from the Obama administration and BP, which are coordinating the cleanup: “The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,'” said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston.
Now, almost seven weeks later, as the oil spewing from the battered well spreads across the Gulf and soils pristine beaches and coastline, BP and our government have reconsidered....
Obama knew how bad it would be (there are reports out they knew the day of the explosion) and he avoided any effort to clean up the spill. I suppose it's anyone's guess as to why but Rahm's famous quote about not letting crises go to waste and his own words about putting carbon industries out of business lead me to a pretty inescapable, and ominous, conclusion.

i shoudl look up how many poor souls now have aids in america
uganda has succeeded in reducing hiv.
I know I'm being baited and I still can't resist. First, while I wish Uganda well I'm not eager to take public health policy lessons from them. Second, if you want to talk 1.1 million Americans with HIV you need to talk about the left's and the Democrats' succesful effort in the 1980's to prevent any rational response to AIDS. At almost any other time in US history carriers would have been identified and humanely quarantined, but the disease happened to enter the US at a high-water mark of gay political power within the Democrat party and the Dems quashed any idea of quarantines as being fascist and discriminatory. (But remember you can't call it a gay disease either!*) But with a sane health and immigration policy HIV infection would be an order of magnitude better in the US today.
*The thing about HIV is it's a sexually transmitted disease only incidentally to being a blood-borne disease. So, intravenous drug users are at high risk and practitioners of anal sex are at high risk due to micro-tears. The transmission rate from vaginal sex is oddly not that high for a single encounter, so the spread among the heterosexual population is highly dependent on promiscuity. That's why it's taken off in Africa, but the predictions of disaster in the US never fully came to pass.

I liked the book for two reasons: 1. It seems obvious to me what happens when you cripple the producers and only have moochers and looters. She painted that world or her prediction of that world well. I chose the moniker because I wanted a name from literature that connoted a strong woman with economic and erotic sense.
2. It's long. I read very fast. I like long books. I love Michner for that reason. I also like Rutherford. The Russians, not so much. Too much angst.

Seriously, I find the Russians very true to life. If the Russian inferiority complex is too much, try some of the short stories of Ivan Bunin. Much "simpler" in their portrayal of Russian life and quicker and less dark in their character development. Bunin was fucking awesome, but with a lighter tone. Well, sometimes.

And I'm always amazed by the educational and intellectual background of the average moron. But that doesn't include you, Ray-Bans.
You are a fool. A poser. An utter fucknozzle. You probably couldn't even afford to drive to the homes of these people here that you denigrate. Vonnegut? You're fucking kidding, right?
Your arrogance reveals that your pubic hair is younger than most of my socks. You truly have no clue. When was the last time you read something that didn't have pictures? Seriously. Even if you're a college student, you have pictures. Anyone more than ten years older than you, which is all of us, have actually read books without pictures.
You consider yourself open-minded, and you are. Like an open sewer, you'll let anything shit in there.
Vonnegut. Heh.

So Brits and Americans have been doing it for them ever since, and building their roads, electrical grid, desalination plants, etc. - basically anything over three stories that you don't want to fall down.

But how long does it live in a used syringe that presumably contains some blood as a host for the infection?

Who cares if it is a fucking hoax? If you point a toy gun at me that looks real and I shoot you, you loose. If you purposely plant a hoax like this and your enemy then is forced to sterilize entire regions of your country to be on the safe side, well, you loose.
But whatever, we aren't willing to do what is required to win. Our guys are strapped down with stupid ROEs. We won WWII in 3.5 years against a mighty military machine and we can be these goat fucking cave dwellers in almost 3 times that?

HIV pretty much dies as soon as it's exposed to air, and the odds of getting HIV from blood freshly drawn from an HIV carrier and then immediately accidentally sticking yourself with the needle are only about 3 in 1,000.
Just to put it into perspective, there are under 200 cases of possible HIV transmission in the US to health care workers from needle sticks. And needle sticks aren't exactly rare.
Hepatitis, OTOH, lives for up to three or four days on a surface at room temperature. I'd be much more afraid of hepatitis in this situation than HIV.
