Wouldn't mean that this "teacher of the year" could spell, though.
"At least one other teacher new of the sexual affair."--so that makes it acceptable because one other teacher didn't raise a red flag.

Er, just a second ... the article repeatedly refers to this teacher as a "pedophile", but the young man she seduced was 17 years old - i.e., well above the age of consent. I'm not excusing what she did, but it's not like she was preying on children, either.

You are right and wrong, normally pedophile would not apply to physical attraction to someone who has reached puberty. So pedophile as defined is independent of age of consent, though the media like to use it for any kind of case of statutory rape.

The woman deserves to lose her teaching license, and is guilty of very poor judgement and abuse of her authority. However, I find the "pedophile" label that they give her annoying. Pedophiles are attracted to prepubescent children, while this woman had a relationship with an (physically) adult. It doesn'tmake the relationship appropriate, but society shouldn't cheapen one definition by using it too loosely
I don't know if I agree with that. I don't know what the age of consent is down there, but a teacher (who is in a position of authority) is a pedophile when she preys on a student under her care. It violates the basic tenet of the student/teacher relationship. Truly awful. This guy is still a victim of her poor judgment and lack of self control.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution article:
The student, a player on ShilohÂ’s football team who is to graduate Friday, claimed that Hall gave him gifts and pressured him to commit to their six-month relationship by giving her a baby, according to the file. When he declined, the studentÂ’s family said, Hall gave him a failing grade, prompting him to report the relationship to school officials.
“The allegation of the inappropriate behavior came to light because the teacher decreased the student’s grade,” Gwinnett schools spokeswoman Sloan Roach said.
Gwinnett County Public Schools police are investigating the incident. The governor recently signed a new law making it illegal for teachers to have sex with students, even if the sex is consensual. In addition, the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, which has the authority to revoke HallÂ’s teaching certificate, is scheduled to review the complaint next week.

Of course she shouldn't be doing this sort of thing, and it does constitute a betrayal of trust as well as a breach of professional ethics. But it's not pedophilia.

Runningrn,
Pedophilia is the attraction to prepubscent children. That is the definition. I'm not suggesting that what she did was in any way appropriate. It was misguided, possibly predatory, and most certainly a criminal abuse of her position. However, when you use a term like "pedophile", you bring along a lot of baggage and implications which IMHO, don't belong to this case. First and formost, I think it infantilizes the young man, who by any other standard of society is clearly responsible for his actions.

We are not discussing right and wrong. I think we agree banging a student is wrong. (Again I thought we all agreed on the seat belt thing)
Is it fair to say that someone has a serious sexual sickness, pedophilia, associated with sexual attraction to non sexually developed children, VS a teacher who let the "normal" attraction to a sexually adult student drive an amoral decision to pursue sex.
Difference: a person can be a pedo realize it, get help, and never do anything inappropriate; but he/she is still sick, but chooses to act morally.
It is not considered sexually deviant if you're a teacher to be attracted to 17yo students. There is an expectation that you act morally though, but you shouldn't be seeking psychiatric care.
Posted by: MikeTheMoose at May 27, 2010 02:33 PM (0q2P7)
Okay, different states have different "ages of consent." But here's the basic point: there should be one age that's the line of demarcation between "child" and "adult." Of course individuals mature at different rates, but when it comes to a general rule regarding basic decency, then one age should be the standard. It used to be 18, still is as far as I'm concerned, and it has something to do with the fact that most people graduate from high school at that age and start becoming responsible for themselves. In other words, if you're still in school, you're still a kid.
IMO, this is really how teachers should be viewing their K-12 students, as children -- even during the few months they are 18 just before they graduate. That makes any teacher who screws a student a type of pedophile in my estimation, although not legally or literally.

That was my take too. However, from a semantic/legal? standpoint, it looks like it's pre-pubescent.

142 I'm with a poster upthread. When I was going to high school, my female teachers were hogs. Maybe I would have done better at math if I knew I was going to get a little poon from some hawt 20-something year old teacher during studyhall.
This thought just popped into my head so it could be completely ridiculous but could this influx of there being so many hot teachers now compared to yesteryear be a result of the "everyone must go to college" mentality? Perhaps now there are a lot of women who previously would have worked simpler jobs or become housewives only, but because "you must have a college education" they go and choose to do education.

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (BNO NEWS) -- Former child star Gary Coleman, who starred in the 1980s hit series Diff'rent Strokes, is reportedly is in critical condition in a Utah hospital. Don't answer like you would if you were OBAMA...the point is, you restrict adult activity to 18, but that would mean driving a car as well. I don't condone the sex but you seem to imply that the law should limit the age of consent on his part to 18 but make no mention of the other things in life kids aproaching adulthood are legaly allowed to do. Mroeover, your answer says....yeah they can drive (that would be my paraphrase of your THAT'S RIGHT).

There may very well be. But instinctual attraction is still very real. You are saying because you think a sexual practice is amoral, that any person who commits it is a sexual deviant. Wrong answer: they are not sexual deviants for conducting an amoral sexual practice, they are just amoral.

Point of information: I think we are at the first era in human history when the demarcation between child and adult has been defined at 18 years of age. In pretty much all of recorded history up to the late 20th century, people were expected to be marriageable and capable of earning a living at 14 or 15 or 16 years of age.

I don't know if I agree with that. I don't know what the age of consent is down there, but a teacher (who is in a position of authority) is a pedophile when she preys on a student under her care. Starting this weekend, jackhammers and backhoes will be at work as the White House undergoes the biggest renovation project at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in more than five decades.
OK, so this was approved in 2008 and includes upgrades to heating, cooling, electrical, fire alarms, etc. But you also know that there will be a lot of other stuff included. The Obamas love spending money on fancy parties, big date nights, cocktail hours at the WH, etc. You know they are going to be tricking out their crib too. I'm sure that they currently find the WH too, well, white and stodgy. I wonder how the media will cover this? I love America, and I love our democracy. Watching it destroyed makes me cry. Literally, sometimes I weep about it.
But then I think about how the liberals are consciously, deliberately destroying it. I think about how the media are consciously, deliberately lying about what they are doing. I think about how ordinary Dem voters -- people I have called my friends -- consciously, deliberately repeat lies.
And then my tears go away and I get angry. That's what we've all got to do: get angry. Stop being "civil." Look at the kid-glove treatment the media give Islam. They don't dare criticize them because they're scared shitless. That's what we've got to do.
LEARN from the liberals. Send out mobs to the homes of key people -- not just politicians but media execs and producers. SCARE THEM SHITLESS. Make it clear that THEY WILL SUFFER PERSONALLY in a very real physical way if they continue their lies.

Asked if this was the president's Hurricane Katrina, McCarthy responded, "It very well could be." He explained that Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), who represents the district in which the BP explosion occurred, said he tried reaching the president last Thursday to discuss possible solutions.
“He was called back by a staffer on Friday who said that the president was too busy to talk to him. He understood that until I turned on the TV and saw that he was golfing and went out to California to do a fundraiser. He said — six days now and he’s never even spoken to him," McCarthy said.

I saw a 'Kerry / Edwards' sticker last week at mysupermarket.
I see them still in Seattle. It just makes me shake my head, especially in light of Edwards sexcapades/baby daddy crap while his wife was "dying" of cancer. Talk about being stuck on stupid!

Except they don't win because of that; they win despite it. Why? MSM for one.
Look, it's not a country that is Red v. Blue. It's Red v. Blue and a whole lot of Neutral. A good 30% of the US is apolitical so, no, it won't work.
Again, the O campaign was not a negative, mud-slinging one. He won because the MSM covered his ass. The Leftie base was rallied by the Daily Kook, HuffPoo, etc., and they had no interaction with the average voter.
We need a split strategy like those a-holes. One that goes the high road (aka GOP and Tea Partiers), and one that goes the low (blogs and talk radio.) N'ver the twain need meet.
But don't think for a second that Obama won because he was a mud wrestler. He paid people to do that and the media played the Censor.
Don't believe me? Fine. Question then: when was the last time someone changed your mind by screaming at you?

No I can't imagine that, because Bush never would have done that.
Bush quit golfing when the war in Iraq started because he felt it was unseemly for the CinC to be golfing while troops were in harm's way. And I'd bet money that Bush would've attended that memorial, but even he didn't, you wouldn't have seen him out fucking around.

Yeah except it won't be funny because a real sketch would demand Palin being in a favorable light and SNL could never do that. Of course all it requires is a normal Palin Sketch with some guy popping up in the background with binoculars.

Thanks for the Matthews tip. I just watched the video, and wow! He said "this is more like the Iranian hostage crisis that brought down Jimmy Carter than Katrina". He ripped Obama for not showing executive leadership, for prioritizing an interview with Marv Albert and the Boxer fundraiser over this disaster. He decried the "idiotic cerebral meritocracy" and he said "If I hear one more time how Sec. Chu has a Nobel Prize, I'm going to barf. I don't care." Unbelievable.

I think the misconception on that arises from the differences between urban and rural ages at first marriage. If I am not mistaken in the old days "out on the farm" they got married at a much younger age.
In the cities they tended to be later because the male had to establish a position and enough wealth to support a wife so the engagements tended to last longer.
Since there were so many more people living in the cities this would tend to skew the averages.

So we change their behavior. Make them stop repeating their lies. Make them stop their smear tactics. And the way to do that is to make it personal. If an ABC News producer knows that running a negative story about Sarah Palin will get a dead cat nailed to his door, he's going to do something else.
Oh, sure, at first there will be handwringing and puffing and blowing -- just as there was anger at the Muslims after 9/11. But see how the media treats Muslims today, because they are afraid of winding up like Daniel Pearl.
Their minds cannot be changed. Their behavior can be stopped.

The instant intimidation enters the picture, they will exaggerate and over emphasize it to justify law enforcement action. They know that in order to get what they want, will likely run afoul many conservatives and libertarians, and that the fallout will likely result in violence. They are willing to accept this. From that standpoint threats are useless, if you're in for a dime, you're in for a dollar, you threaten them, they call your bluff, then where are you? Either back down and fade into political insignificance, or go aggro and risk everything. I still have faith that our freedom can be saved from progressive politics without violence. So no threats OK?
One last word of unrelated tactical advice that you can take with you and use in personal life.
Never threaten an enemy who is willing to fight you. All it does is warn them you're coming.

Sex in the schools has been going on for a long time -- but it doesn't make it right.
For one this, it is a breach of trust and a break with professional ethics. From a practical point of view "you don't shit where you eat" -- not a bad motto to live by.
Lastly, it's kinda weird -- used to have a couple of college boys who used to sidle up to me and breathe on my neck, try to look down my shirt, push up against me, and the rest. It's annoying as hell, even before you think of the age gap.
So no, just no.

What they were doing, was trying to incite violence by escalating. Let me break down the social strategy for you. They want to have the violent conflict they know they need to have as early as possible. Why? It will have the least support and be easier to put down. That is why Pelosi ran out in front of the Tea Party with her giant gavel right after she took over health care. She was hoping the violence would start right there. They are not afraid of violence, they only pretend to abhor it as much as it helps extend their political power. They show CAIR and ACORN respect as long as they are giving them more power and support the statist society. Don't think for a second that you can cow them with threats. And if violence is your answer, our current position is untenable, and freedom in the US would be eradicated overnight in the name of martial law. And you would hand them their victory.
