Terrorist Attempt at MacDill Air Force Base?

In Tampa.

Police responded to an unknown situation just after 6 p.m. The gate has been closed for more than three hours now.
While it's not clear what is going on, people close to the scene say the bomb squad is there and they're dismantling an SUV.

The Bayshore Gate at MacDill Air Force base is closed tonight because of an incident on the base.
Military personnel are examining an SUV that made it onto the base. Witnesses say the vehicle contained guns and annumition that base personnel were removing. The car also contained military-style clothing.

Update: Two in custody.

"No further details available," which is police jargon for "Muslim male suspects."

I'm not criticizing that, just saying it could just as easily be a couple of kids doing something stupid as it could be a genuine terrorist plot. I've been locked down for hours because of a shooting that happened off base at a department store.

The head of our National Security unit, Adam Levine, reports no explosives were found in the vehicle being searched at the gate

51 At least they stopped them. About 8 years ago, a stupid teenager stole a small Cessna and flew it around Tampa, eventually crashing it in to a hi rise. It only busted up the floor and the teen died. the scary part was he flew in and around MacDill airspace. I remember reading a few reports stating that they did not have anything to counter the intrusion. Nothing was scrambled.

Kinda scary when any old plane can fly right on in and back out with even a hellicopter being scrambled.

At the time of the incident, there were no jet fighters stationed at MacDill to intercept errant aircraft. Two F-15s scrambled from Homestead Air Force base, 200 miles to the south, but the incident was over before they got into the air. Ten days after the incident, two F-15s were reassigned to MacDill to fly air combat patrols over the base
