That Crazy Reagan
— Dave in Texas

How many of you are old enough to remember when you thought "he's insane"?

On June 12, 1987 I was 27 years old. And I thought Reagan was bonkers, with this speech.

"To those listening throughout Eastern Europe...behind me stands a wall."

Some of you, and it ain't no crime, do not remember this wall. It was just something that happened before you.

It was completely a part of my young life. It was a division of power and influence in the world, it was incontrovertible, it was absolute.

There was no overcoming this. We were destined to push our shoulders against the despair of communism, for the rest of our lives, because it could not be defeated.

We were wrong. I was wrong. Because we underestimated the power of the human spirit, that desires liberty, that is willing to cast off oppression at the risk of life itself. To risk everything, to live a life unencumbered by despots.

We should celebrate this, today. It's as good a day as any.

Listen to the words again, at 12:05. "Tear down this wall".

Tear it down, they did.

6 It's sort of hard to describe the *presence* of the wall in our lives, those of us who were young then.

I imagine it was different for those who grew up before the wall was built.    Maybe it didn't seem so eternal to them.

Due to increased pressure from President Obama and his admonition to tear down that wall, North Korea has acquiesced to Obama's demands for unity in the Korean Peninsula, and the process of unification will begin whenever Maddy Albright returns for another bootie call and dances the polka with Kim as she did in the past.

It isn't really human spirit in general - but the spirit of certain people. There are probably more people in Iran tired of the theocracy then there were, percentagewise, tired of communism in the Soviet Union...and it endures.

But there is no Iranian Solzhenitsyn, no modern British Robert Conquest, and certainly no current President Reagan.

I remember being in Berlin in 1986, walking along the Wall at night. Eeriest fucking place I had ever been, bar none. I came across a wooden stairway that basically went nowhere, climbed to the top and I could look out across the no-mans land and on into East Berlin. I took a few shots with my camera (no flash- I sure as hell didn't need someone shooting back) then climbed down and went back to my hotel. Of all the little adventures during that trip, including the one where I accidentally drove into East Berlin (and had to cross back into the West by way of Checkpoint Charlie) that one qualified as the most sobering.

I well understand just how awesome Reagan was then. That speech was the primer Solidarity needed to make it all happen.

The lefties don't like to talk about the fact that they were generally pro-Soviet for most of the Cold War.  They fought Reagan every step of the way in his efforts to win the Cold War- they didn't want to win.

Be it the Soviet Union, the PLO, or Communist rebels in Central America, they always took the pro-commie position.  They wouldn't admit it ("commie" was almost a dirty word back then), but neither would they hesitate to admire the "equality" and "free" services that the percieved existed under Communism.

We see it today with their glowing admiration for Che and Castro, and it was prevalent during the Vietnam War.  The left acts indignant if you refer to their policies as Communist, yet you'll never hear them criticize Communism itself.

Give the American left absolute power, and what you'd end up with would be indistinguishable from Communism, but under a different name.

Also, Carter was just so damn bad, that a Republican president was almost an inevitability in 1980. Carter did still get 82% of the black vote and 54% of the Hispanic vote. I think that's a highwater mark for those demographics.

In 1987 I was 30.  I had a degree in German.  (laugh away)   I went to Germany and stayed with my brother, who was in the army.  Also stayed with various friends I'd met through being a "german major".   All the army guys were very conservative.  I was an asshole.  I had a very young army sgt. boyfriend who proudly showed me his drawing of "the best president we've ever had": Ronald Reagan.  I thought he was simple-minded.

I be-bopped around Berlin alone.  Followed the wall, looked at the barbed wire and broken glass on top of the wall.  Sat at Check Point Charlie and looked up at the guys in the towers.  Saw the memorials of the people who tried to run over and got shot down and I cried.

My girlfriend pointed her camera down the hall toward East Berlin, and we were surrounded by East German guys who were seriously threatening to arrest her.  We were straight away also surrounded by Westies wanting to translate and kick up a fuss.

I became aware of conservatism after picking up a book by Thomas Sowell on a subject I was interested in.  Could not find out more by him until I found him on the internet in 2005.  Then it all changed from there.

Reagan didn't have "talk radio," but he didn't have to deal with the Motor Voter bill.

Remember Clinton and MTV pushing that pile of sh*t down our throats back in 1993?

In my opinion, that bill opened up the floodgates for massive voter fraud, especially in our inner cities.  I don't think Reagan would have had a chance in hell of winning 59% of the popular vote had that bill been in place in 1984.

177 oh God I can't stand Beck's take on presidents, he gets so many things wrong and has used such horrible evidence, when he starts going on about how Adams was so awesome I wonder if he's done his research or when he compares TR (def. a progressive rep but no socialist) to Wilson or FDR (freaking socialists).

I like Beck but he does get his history terribly wrong at times. The problem is he will read a single book on a subject in history and if it fits his preconceived ideas it becomes hot smokin gospel.

As for Adams, I would put him as front runner, or at least near the top, on the worst President of the 19th century list. It was his evil conspiracy with John Marshall that gave ultimate power to the federal government via the Supreme Court. Yes, the job of interpreting what the Constitution means was given to a branch of the federal government. The fox was put in charge of the hen house.

180 im jus sayin that metro areas are the reason that cities grow and prosper. and of course alot of that is due to the populace. for example, san francisco or LA could have never grown into what it is today without it's metro populace and area, no way, no-how. and its also the reason the government defines 'metro-areas'. i just cant understand how it seems metro areas are shut out if theyre all red and the city itself being blue, changes things entirely in an election.

195 emasculate, believing in an imaginary entity that tells you to fly planes into buildings is a good thing? Plenty of people do wrong with no god at all to guide them, I might point out. The problem is not with God; it's with our inability to understand what He says, and how to lead our lives as He wishes us to. We are the problem, not God. The "imaginary entity" shot is pretty juvenile as well, I have to say. Many true and real things are invisible. Your mom or wife says she loves you, and you believe her. Why? Because she tells you so. You can't see it, but you don't doubt that it exists. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.* *If I may draw a bit of wisdom from a Bible passage inspired by my imaginary entity. Hebrews 11:1, for the curious.

259 When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.  If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.  But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her.  And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter.  If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife.  If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment.  (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)"

" If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife.  If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. ----rewritten text as regards to manly culture, in other words, this was injected into scripture. the other part of the passage was another reference to the boss/employee line of thinking in ragards to the time.

Because the Bushes (George HW and W) are globalists, for whatever reason.  It is their pathology.  I don't know where it comes from, but they worshipped at the altar of globalism at the expense of all sense and reason, not to mention any decent notion of US sovereignty.  The Bushes never really liked the concept of the nation-state.  That's why W didn't pull the US out of the UN, as he threatened to do and after the UN did what he said would cause the US to leave (not in those exact words, but the clear meaning).

Because the Bushes (George HW and W) are globalists, for whatever reason.  It is their pathology.

I hadn't thought of that.  I knew we were in trouble when Bush I said, "Kindler, gentler, stupider kind of government." The game was over.  He let the donks define the terms of the debate.  To be conservative--to be like Reagan--meant you were mean, evil, greedy, etc., and he was going to open up the lockbox of government goodies.  Coz he's nice, unlike Reagan.  And likes using goverment power.  Dumbshit.  And Bush II?  Not a clue about real conservatism.*  He doesn't strike me as an arrogant person, so it's hard to figure why he, like his father, didn't just say to himself, "What was it that worked with Reagan?"

*Drew did a post a long time ago about how Bush II didn't really know what it meant to be conservative.  Some revealing statements of his:  He seemed to think conservative meant "social conservative" and went off talking about how he had already done his due for them.  Apparently no clue about conservatism vis a vis the size of government, etc.  Also revealed in that post, I think, was Bush's post presidency realization of what being a conservative meant, as he reportedly said something like, "I wish I had been more conservative" in terms of keeping government as small as possible and not spending money like a fucking jackass.

293 what athiests fail to grip is that the reason the holy book is filled with contradictions is because of how man interjects and misrepresents god's word.  and the funny part is that god has said it on more than one occasion in the bible. in other words, god knew mankind would fuck up the bible itself. theres even a passage where god tells non-believers to laugh at evil and the devil, but you never hear athiests bring it up. god knew there would be non believers which is why he preached faith. he knew what he said was very incredulous to early man which is why he spoke on their terms and is also the reason he got so frustrated. because even speaking on mankind's terms didnt sway man's idiocy. its the same as a spoiled kid, how many times do you have to point him in the right direction before you become frustrated? the thing with god is, he was very vocal about it lol.

the problem isnt with god itself, its with mankinds arrogance and the "i know everything and you dont" whining.

It's usually pointless to comment at #290, but this is right in my kitchen and I can't help myself.

I am exactly the same age as Dave in Texas.  I thought Reagan was batshit crazy, or that the speech was just posturing and pandering.

I had been in East Berlin in 80 and 84.  The Wall was built when Dave and I were in diapers.  It was clearly an eternal fact of life. After it fell it became one of the most important parts of my career.  I lived in Germany from 91-93 helping to clean up after communism and seeing what it had done.

So maybe it's just how you feel if you're Dave's age.  On this date in 1987 Reagan was bonkers.

Yeah.  Bush II was no conservative (as was so clearly demonstrated in his second term and the amazing lurching to the left he took).  He was saved, I believe, by his Christian feelings.  That is what caused him to nominate great justices.  That is what made him the greatest friend Israel ever had in the White House.  Without his strong Christian beliefs, W would have been just like his father, who was one of the most anti-Israel Presidents in a long time (though, by comparison with the Indonesian Imbecile, Bush Sr. was a dear friend of Israel).

Both Bushes showed their globalist idiocy in those pathetic "coalitions of everyone, except Israel" for their wars.  They seemed so bent on a "global" response that it boggled the mind.  The first coalition against Iraq included Syria (WTF) and a bunch of other useless arab "allies".  The second coalition against Afghanistan included a laughable entreaty to Iran.  Both intentionally tried to pretend that Israel didn't exist, which the arabs saw very clearly and is why Israel was the only country Saddam Hussein rained scuds down on (outside of a couple headed to Saudi Arabia) and why Arafat and Fatah started on their greatest suicide bombing campaign ever in the aftermath of 9/11.

Finally, W showed his true globalist stripes in his push for amnesty - after 9/11 and while there should have been a nearly violent reaction to try and strengthen and safeguard US sovereignty - especially in the wake of how the world treated us in the runup to Iraq - which was a task that the whole world benefitted from greatly.

I liked W a lot and appreciated the excellent things he did (his SCOTUS nominations were a veritable godsend) but he always took three steps backwards towards globalism whenever he was able, and it hurt our foreign policy and the fighting of the wars.  And then there is all the expansion of federal power that W promoted.  I'm not talking about the Patriot Act, which was reasonable as a national security necessity that was within the purview of the federal government, but NCLB, the Medicare drug bill, and other encroachments by Washington.  Of course, again, relative to the absolutely anti-Constitutional, anti-American insanity of this administration and their useful idiots in Congress, W was very much a federalist - but that's only because the insanity we have now is without precedent (there is no comparison to what is going on now and FDR, though many think so) and as un-American as anything that has ever happened to this nation.

When he threatened the UN in the runup to Iraq.  He gave a speech about how the US could not take obstruction from that organization and that it would render itself irrelevant, with a fairly clear threat that the US would leave.  If you recall, that message was heard by many, as Australia threatened to leave the UN not long after - but Bush let Australia hang in the wind on that one.  And, as it turned out, Bush went to the UN even more after Iraq, even though they tried to screw us over again and again and again.

Yeah.  Macnamara.  Geezus.  "I ran GM; therefore, I can run a war.  Who needs military training?"  How arrogant.

At almost every bad turn in life, it seems, there is someone standing there with NPD tendencies, too arrogant to need to consider anything past their own sentiments.

I'm not working on a theory--I don't care to work on this one; it's working on me:  Narcissism has been asserted by some to be at the root of all personality disorders.  (Hence, so much overlap.)  Well, they knew of naricissism in the old, old days too when they called it "the sin of pride."  That, I think, is the original sin.  Not sure.  But being so goddamned enamoured of onesself that one reaches a disfunctional level of certainty in one's decision-making leads to pretty much every other bad thing.  "I'm one of the best and the brightest.  I am so smart, I ought to be running other's lives.  And this war."  Eh.  I know that's not that clear, but I can't fix it without droning on and on.

310 Wasn't the original rule to not eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil? I figure Christ brought it full circle. He came to fulfill the law. So I just don't think in terms of right and wrong, I just try my best to love God with all my heart mind and soul and to love my neighbor as myself. I break the law every day cuz I speed a little. I smoke, drink and cuss. I lust a lot, too. But I ain't gonna rob any banks and I sure as hell ain't gonna rape little kids and murder them. I'll defend my family and kill a motherfucker if I have to, but I won't shove my faith around with a gun. Nor should anybody. It really isn't that complicated but it isn't that simple (right and wrong) either. Religion is man's way of making himself right with God (by his own behavior). Christianity is God's way of making man right with himself (no one is perfect and cannot earn the gift of life on earth, let alone that of everlasting life. God gives it freely). Live and let live. Don't tread on me. You can believe in God, not believe in God, or worship your own fucking dick for all I care. Just don't fuck with me and my family, please. My bet is that I'll see you in heaven anyway. We just won't live in the same neighborhood as Mother Theresa. But if I knock on her door and ask to stay a while (explaining to her that my house is the size of a broom closet) do you really think she'll say "fuck off" and slam the door in my face?  Some preachers might, cuz they'll be so PISSED that I am there to. By faith, not works I say... Not that there's anything wrong with works. That gets you better digs, I think.

When Reagan made this speech I was 20 and recovering from being moderate in my teenage years.  This was the era when I realized that Communism/Socialism/Leftism/Liberalism were just broad words for slavery and theft.  I came to realize that Republicans understood that freedom and innocent life were both sacred.  They had the big picture in mind, unlike the liberals who would throw grain at bums and feel good about themselves that they had fed the hungry.  For the moment.

To this day I believe that Ronald Reagan was the greatest president of the 20th century.

I also remember that every time you opened a newspaper or magazine, every time you turned on TV and watched the news, SNL, celebrity interviews, etc, you were told that Reagan was evil, insane, stupid and destined to do very bad things to the country.  I was smart enough to disbelieve it.

The same thing happened to George H. W. Bush, Limbaugh, George W. Bush and Sarah Palin.  Become the leading conservative figure in the USA and the press will slander you 24/7 as stupid, crazy, evil.

Those of you on the right who buy into the slander on Sarah Palin?  Learn from the past and grow the fuck up.

313 Had 8th Grade History during the Carter-Reagan election and we had a class exercise/campaign/debate/election - students were randumly selected, I was on the Reagan team.

EASY - Iran? GLASS!

Even amongst us grade schoolers Reagan was the obvious choice.

By 1987 "Tear Down This Wall" was pretty much, uhhh, expected. Even the UAW backed tearing down the Iron Curtain and had regular sympathetic articles in their 'Solidarity' rag, esp. with Lech Wałęsa.

314 "every time you turned on TV and watched the news, SNL, celebrity interviews, etc, you were told that Reagan was evil..." I've been watching the first two seasons of Gimme A Break. There is at least one anti-Reagan joke in every episode. If it wasn't Reagan, it was a Nixon joke, or Nell telling Julie she dances like a Republican. I didn't pick up on any of that while watching it as a kid.

It's more likely than you think.

I don't know her, but I do know her right-hand gal. And her Right-Hand-Gal is an unapologetic Moronette.  If you missed it, she went toe-to-toe with Ron Paul on Judge Napolitano's show earlier tonight and won handily.  I hope this is a preview of 2012, because she showed tonight that she can easily handle all comers.

321 This speech was REAL HOPE.    Not the empty promises of the welfare state that Obama and Progressives offer.

This speech still chokes me up when I watch it.  I was in High School when Reagan first gave it.  It touched me then.  It still does today.

Did you know that Russia celebrates Independence day today?  (go ahead, Google it).

Few words have ever been so powerful in our age:

"Mr Gorbachev, open this gate
Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Reagan was advised to NOT say these words.  They were seen as inflammatory.  His advisers felt it would antagonize the Soviets.  They were wrong.

It makes me pine for a leader that doesn't act based on a "focus group" or a bunch of no-nothing professors' opinions.

Posted by: Jack-ImageX at June 12, 2010 08:03 PM (gT9ig)

322
After the wall was torn down, every media pundit and liberal (if that's not redundant) declared that we knew all along that the Soviet system was failing from within and its collapse was inevitable.

They just never found any public figure other than Reagan who was saying that in 1981. The rest didn't catch on until 1991.

323 I did my first visit to Berlin in 1992. Everybody was excited because they unblocked part of the Brandenburg Gate so the No. 100 bus could drive right under it. They also opened up the telephone exchange between east and west Berlin so you could dial direct. In no man's land, there were abandoned tanks, trucks, and MIGs -- all spray painted colors with squatters living in them. It was wild.

I was 27 in '87, and I thought Reagan was bat-sh!t crazy, too. His trillion-dollar Star Wars program did little to sway that belief. Then, I saw the rusting of the Iron Curtain accelerate after his speech.

The Pope, the Solidarity movement, the people, all gained strength from his speech, all opened my eyes to the logic of his insanity.

By contrast, Mr. Kool is all smooth talk and ideology but no maturity, world-class thinking, or leadership skills.

Reagan had some brass balls, compared to everyone else that has held the office since then.  He played a mean game of chicken with the Soviets, and damn if it didn't work.   Yes, Solidarity and Lech Walesa, Pope John Paul, and Thatcher.  The combination made the impossible, happen.

I never thought that the wall would come down in my lifetime.

328 I was just a few years older on that day, and I fully expected him to lambast the Wall and its bloody history and the reasons it was there and guarded by arms, but when he came out and said, "Mr. Gorbachev:  tear down this wall!"  I lept to my feet, cheering and applauding.  Which was awkward, since I was in my living room at the time.

And just a couple years later, I watched the live coverage - on the only 24 hour news network then, CNN - of young people chiseling it apart.  The greatest threat to freedom in the history of mankind was the Soviet Empire.  In 1979, for the first time ever, the respected British military magazine Jane's Review ranked the USSR as the greatest military power in the world overall.  It had seemed we were losing the long Cold War.  But Reagan showed what today's leaders should know:  the bullies are tough when you back off, and demand ever more when you offer them anything, but if you face them down straight on and don't give an inch, they generally shrink away.

In the words of Churchill:  "One ought never to turn one's back on a threatened danger and try to run away from it. If you do that, you will double the danger. But if you meet it promptly and without flinching, you will reduce the danger by half."

Obama should be heeding, but he's the guy who sent the Churchill bust back.

I wonder if they have ever asked themselves, that if they should have the kind of government they apparently seek, no one would ever be able to do what they are doing again.

334 Some of us didn't think Reagan was crazy. But then again, we'd lived through the Carter years and knew the country needed a serious resurgence and correction.

So we enlisted in the armed services to help Reagan achieve his goals and restore our country to greatness. I enlisted in the USMC early in Reagan's term. I donned the uniform, was issued a rifle, and stood ready to use it.

I didn't care if the media called him a mad bomber. I wanted to do what I could to help the country regain its former glory.

Others, like the original poster, lapped up the media meme, thought he was insane, and hid under the sink.

That's the difference between a a clear headed patriot and a coward. I'm guessing the "Dave in Texas" lives in Austin. Especially since he was precisely of the age of military service. Must have wanted someone else like me to defend his sorry ass.

But stop with the holier-than-thou-stuff. It's unmanly and unhelpful. Liberty needs all the friends it can get these days, including converts--especially converts. After all, Reagan was himself a convert.

It just sounded like one more example of his feel-good politcal rhetoric to me at the time.  "Yeah, like THAT'S ever going to happen," I thought. I'm so glad to have been proven to be 100% wrong on that, and on so many other things about Reagan.

The Big Bad Bear seemed to be as powerful, and as permanently entrenched as we were back then. Just go back and look at all the nuclear holocaust themed movies, and that was the world we lived in.  Actually there's a Star Trek episode or two that has the theme as well.  I'm even old enough to have been dragged out into the hall at school for air-raid drills (which, if I'm not mistaken, were for us to brace for a nuclear attack). At least we didn't have to do the hide-under-the-desk thing, which I think was earlier.

Not only did I serve, I can prove it. Want to put some money on it?

Reagan wasn't crazy in 1980, or 1987, or 1976 (when, for you youngsters, he ran in the primary against Ford for the privilege to run against that prior iteration of Obama named Jimmy Carter). He was a patriot that believed in our Country's greatness.

For some douche to sit around saying that Reagan was "insane" in 1987, after Reagan had the entire world on its collective heels, displays a profound level of ignorance, nay even stupidity. Anyone that would use "insane" to describe Reagan is a an imbecile.
