The Boys of October
— Dave in Texas

Aside from me being pretty happy to see my Rangers back in the playoffs (5-1 over the Rays this afternoon), it's also cool that Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay made a little history today with a no-hitter over the Reds.

The only other time it happened in post-season play was 1956, Don Larsen for the Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers, which not only was a no-hitter, it was the crown jewel for a pitcher, a "perfect game" (27 up, 27 down, no one reached base).

This Yahoo pic put em side by side, Yogi Berra and Larson, and Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz and Halladay.

Hey, normally I'm off baseball by August, except for the couple of times I watched the Rangers eat the schnitz against the Yankees (who just downed the Twins 6-4) in less than 5 games.

4 Well, my nearly 3 years of 'funemployment' finally payed off as I got to watch a full day off playoff baseball, starting with 'My Texas Rangers' shutting down the Rays; watching Halladay's near-perfection pitching for the team from my yoot; and then getting the reminder that my life still sucks after watching the Twins barf up a hairball to the yankers.

GO RANGERS!! (and if they meet the Phils in the Series, I will have to keep my Mike Schmidt 1980 replica home jersey in the closet.)

My tuxedo kitteh turned into a Rangers fan when the Mets traded Jeff Francoeur (female kitteh, likes Frenchy's looks) but the tabby is a Phillies fan. Could be an epic catfight in the making.

7 Go Rays!

Sorry, I'm an Angels fan.

Go Twins!

Sorry, I'm a baseball fan.

Roy Halladay is the Wonder Bread version of Pedro Martinez.

It's a treat (every time) to see him and Mariano Rivera pitch.

9 I'm very happy for Halladay. He deserves this, having suffered so long in Toronto under the previous regime.

Posted by: Otis Criblecoblis at October 06, 2010 09:14 PM (kJXs1)

10 Halladay became, I believe, the sixth pitcher in major league history to pitch two no-hitters in one season. And he came this close to becoming the first pitcher ever to pitch two perfect games in his career, let alone in one season. The hardest-hit ball the Reds hit came off the bat of pitcher Travis Wood, who himself took a perfect game into the ninth inning earlier this year against the Phillies.

11 I was there. For those who think baseball is boring, well...it can be very dull. This game was an all-timer. You don't have to be a Phillies fan, or even a baseball nut, to appreciate Halladay's gem. The electricity in the ballpark was simply amazing.

This is definitely a great time to be a Phillies fan.

16 Halladay dished up a walk.  He sucks.

Was a pretty amazing performance.  Of course, being a Reds fan and not having cable, I couldn't watch it, because MLB would tongue punch a skunk's ass for a nickel.  But I listened to Marty Brenneman bitch.

Reds will eat Oswalt's lunch tonight.

18 Being a Rangers' fan sine they moved to Texas in '72, I am qualified to point out that it is only a matter of time before they cough up a giant hairball and go home.  I really would love to see them do well, but I have seen too many disappointments in my time to be optimistic.

the "geniuses" at the head office of the Rays sure look smart now passing on Cliff Lee huh?/sarc

congrats to your Rangers because they're sweeping my Rays, I got a lot of heat down here when I predicted after we won our last game in KC in extra innings to clinch the Division. Don't get me wrong, I hope i'm wrong as a Rays fan but this team just doesn't seem to want as much as the others. For the record, I think the Rangers could go all the way and Phili will prob walk into the World Series like they own it.

I am proud though that the attendance at the Trop was sold out in an afternoon school day, I expect it to be sold out today as well when the Rangers rock Shields. As you can tell i'm a pessimistic fan right now, my predictions are coming true to my unhapiness.

There was quite the uproar when Ruben Amaro Jr. let him go to Seattle. All the best to Clifton, we'll always remember his stellar performance for the Phils.

GO PIRATES!!!!! Oh wait, they lost 105 games and haven't sniffed .500 for 18 seasons. They will have the 1st round draft pick. They will trade that pick to the Yankees for a case of beer and 2 mules.

On a more important note, the NHL regular season starts tonight. Its the Penguins vs. Flyers on Versus.

30 Actually, hockey season starts at noon today as your Carolina Hurricanes take on the Minnesota Wild from Helsinki, Finland.

I am happy to say that my boycott of MLB is still in effect. Until the Reds are returned to their rightful place of opening the regular season first, MLB can kiss my ass.

Yeah funny but doesn't it piss you off that these billionaires push a lot of communities to pass two and three hundred million dollar bond proposals to build stadiums under the guise that it will benefit the community with jobs, etc but if they don't they will have to pack up and leave for a city that will build them a stadium.

They claim that stadiums and arenas make this huge economic impact in terms of sales tax revenue, etc., but I've heard that economic studies have found that they have about the same impact on a city as a Super Wal-Mart. Except for the fact that the Super Wal-Mart is not built with taxpayer money.

Don't forget zoning waivers and perks for the pols who are in the pocket of the stadium developers and team owners. Amazing how these local politicians can get to see playoff games in luxury boxes.

And those "jobs?" What kind of jobs does a sports stadium generate? Sure, the construction will pump lots of money into the coffers of the unions, but once it's complete, those jobs go away.

They knocked down Giants Stadium and built a new one for no good reason and I read that the taxpayers still owe $100mil. on it. It's not even there anymore.
