The Dems' dilemma in 2012 [Fritzworth]
— Open Blogger

First off, it's useful to remember that 2 years is an eternity in politics; we need only look at the 2008 vs. 2010 elections to remember that. And, of course, it's hard to underestimate the ability of the Republican Party to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, as the 2006 and 2008 (and, for that matter, 1992 and 1996) elections show.

That said, Obama is clearly damaged goods at this point. His approval rating is now lower than George W. Bush's. Much of his party is furious at him for his tax-cut "sellout". A large chunk of the population thinks that he shouldn't be re-elected in 2012, and that's starting to include vocal leftists as well.

I've been sure for some months that Hilary has been carefully keeping her powder dry -- artfully parsed denials, notwithstanding -- in anticipation of stepping into the 2012 Democratic primary. Michael Goodwin over at the New York Post thinks that it's too late for Hilary, that she bet on the wrong horse by accepting the SecState position, and that opposing Obama would be an "act of betrayal". I disagree; I think that Hilary would jump into the race only when enough top-ranking Dems begged her to, and almost everyone on the Left would fall into line.

Almost everyone. Goodwin then makes one more observation that really underscores the Dems' problem: "[Clinton would] forfeit the black vote, which could kill her in a general election."

Oops. He's exactly right. And that's the problem that any Dem challenger to Obama (short of another black candidate) would face. Blacks would see it as yet another case of white liberals shoving them aside and grabbing the steering wheel (to borrow a metaphor). And you can bet -- again, based on his track record in the 2008 and 2010 elections -- that Obama would play that for all it's worth.

The Left has lived on racial politics for decades, well after the Right largely abandoned it (hyperventilating by the Left notwithstanding). But unless someone in the Democratic leadership can bell the cat and convince Obama -- should he be in serious trouble 12 months from now -- to step down and let a new candidate be chosen, they're pretty much stuck with him. Even if someone can wrest the nomination from him -- an iffy prospect, see Carter v. Kennedy, 1980 -- they would alienate and depress the black vote, which not only means most likely losing the Presidential election, but also means throwing a lot of Senate, House, and state elections to the 'Pubs as well.

Now, given Obama's general track record over the past two years and in particular over the past month, post-election, in which he repeatedly blames everyone but himself, what do you think are the chances of him voluntarily not seeking reelection? Yeah, that's what I thought, too. ..fritz..

UPDATE: Link added ("He's exactly right") to show continued high support (91%) for Obama among blacks as of October 2010.

2 Dick Morris on F&F this morning said all this crap going on now with the Dems on this tax deal was a primary fight for 2012 and that Hillary would challenge him.

of course how often has DM been right lately?

3 I cannot wait for the day that piece of garbarge Obama is gone. What a waste of flesh. He would have been better born a tree then at least he would heve served a purpose. The purpose being  "A PLACE FOR DOGS TO TAKE A PISS" !!!!!!!

4 The loss of the Black vote is what lost Clinton the Primary in the first place. That and the shenenigans that the Obummer campaign pulled in Iowa.

What is the Lib Electoral "Stool": Minorities, Single Females, White Single Moms, and Rich Educated Whites.  Obama Won Married Females because of the Financial crisis and the whole Sarah Palin is a bad mom factor.

The Democrat Party is what cost her the primary. i.e. Super-delegates.

Hmmm, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Obama get a pretty good bounce in the polls from Indies from this act of apparent bipartisanship, grudging though it was.  I also wouldn't be completely surprised to see an economic upturn this Spring due to the payroll tax reduction, especially if it turns out to be a reduction of the tax RATE by 2 points, effectively a 30% reduction of the tax collected--the reporting on this point is ambiguous, however.

If he gets some positive results in polls and the economy shows signs of responding to the payroll tax reduction, he's back in the ballgame.

I see his oil drilling moratorium announcement, and the resulting rise in gas prices, as being the spoiler for him, even if he has helped himself with this deal.  If gas prices hit $4 again, he is Cooked.

8 The untold secret is that even though they got rid of the smoke filled back rooms that picked the candidates, neither Party really wants the unwashed masses picking the candidates either.

There is a reason for all these obscure rules.

12 Much as I hate to say it, I think the "erosion" of Osama Obama's political strength won't be that much of an issue in '12.

First, there's no one on the horizon who can take the monolithic, knee-jerk black vote from him. He got, what, 91% of them in '08? He might slip to 90.5% in '12, but that's about it.

Second, the libs are whining like babies pulled from the teat right now, but when push comes to shove, not a damn one of them will abandon him in favor of any electable candidate. Some might try to push a Bernie Sanders or Markos Mole-in-the-ass type, but in the end, they know their choice will have to face a Republican, for whom they would never, ever vote.

Unless the public really wakes up -- and they let themselves get royally bamboozled last time, so why expect them to be more schooled next time? -- the Dems will line up in sheeplike unity behind the Mohammedan Mouthpiece. And the slimy sonofoabitch will win.

Uh, why? She'd still have a D next to her name, which seems to be all that's necessary to get 75%+ of the black vote.

More accurate: people who think other people should pay their way through life, and people who think they should be able to control the lives of others, neither of which is related to race, gender, or marital status.

Posted by: Zakn at December 08, 2010 05:43 AM (zyaZ1)

20 BTW, Dems normally get 95% of the black vote. The difference with Obama was that a much larger number of them turned out.

That IS and always has been the key to winning elections. Get out your base.

All this whining about the mythical "independent" is another MFM myth.

Posted by: Vic at December 08, 2010 05:43 AM (e4sSD)

21 But blacks are, and have been, the most loyal Democratic voters of all groups. Consistently they vote D.

So the only way a Dem candidate could lose the black vote, is if they stay home. This may happen, but after the primary Clinton will have many months to infuriate the left (black, white, green, and pinko) into going to the polls.

I agree that Clinton is thinking of running. She is famously a former Goldwater girl and I think her plan is to be drafted. Just watch her cackle whenever asked about barry's troubles. She is enjoying it too much to not have a scheme.

Okay, so his share will drop to 94.9% as of now. One more minority giveaway program or a pro-Black Muslin act by Eric Shabazz Holder, and it'll be right back to 96%.

28 Also, by losing the Left barry's poll numbers will sink. Just as Bush lost the Right after all his spending and compassion. Once the poll numbers drop low enough he will officially be a "failed" president and open season for the press. He should try to save that 30% die hard left and keep his numbers in the 30's or 40's. Bill wants Hillary to run a primary challenge -- it's been his plan since Obama won in '08 -- so he can get back to the White House himself. Because, well, you know. I don't know why they keep saying "this will win independents back ".

Clinton could do it because Clinton was a moderate democrat with a proven record as a governor of a red state.  Obama is not a moderate not by a long stretch he only pretends to be one (with the LSM helping him); as he did in 2008, which most independents have figured out. Why do these idiot pundits on TV keep saying "this will win independents back", most all independents I know are like me, consitutional conservatives, liberterian/left of center in their social views.

This tax deal is not going to win independents back, those that were fooled in 2008, they will not be fooled in 2012, many of them voted for conservatives for the first time in 2010 after they figure out yes they were conservatives themselves [compared to the far left man in the WH]. The only way that [reelection of the fraud] would happen is if repubs mess up, smaller govt, if that means small entitilements, so be it. Less govt in American lives. The Tea Party movement is all about spending, limited constitutional govt, it will not happen in a couple of years, so the economy sure as heck will not be recovering much in 2 years, why would any business expand knowing in 18 months who knows what is going to be inflicted on them? and especially when regulations will do what they couldn't pass through laws, because of the Internet, people have more unfiltered information.

and ObamaCare... OMG; instead of a life preservor to the economy (which some of the bailouts did briefly), they then threw a 1000 lb anchor.  I have spoken to so many small business owners, who the hell wants to hire people when the costs are unknown? This is not going to grow America's GDP, it will only stop it from going down, briefly.    No one I know who runs a business trusts this Obama fellow, he can lie and try and "triangulate" he wants, no one believes him.

35 Further, for those that say barry can triangulate out of his mess like Clinton did, remember that Clinton mostly won because of Perot. Right now we are watching barry try to follow that path but don't they realize that triangulation and fighting Gingrich is not what saved Clinton? OK city, weak opposition, revived economy, and Perot saved Clinton.

First off, it's useful to remember that 2 years is an eternity in politics

This is true...the great thing is over the last two years the counter-momentum instantly created by the OBAMA victory and the OBAMA healthcare crap sustained over that period. So even over the course of a political eternity, the people of this country can be counted on to rise up against the destruction this administration is doing.

Oh, Obama (pbuh) will still get more than 90% of the black vote. The issue is turnout. The push in 2008 was unbelievable, and I don't think that the momentum he and his cohorts created is sustainable over four years and an economy in the tank.

He will lose at least 20% of those votes in 2012, and that is a huge amount, probably enough to lose the election. Of course that is assuming that the Republican party nominates someone who is -- how does one say this politely -- not a piece of shit.

UPDATE: Link added ("He's exactly right") to show continued high support (91%) for Obama among blacks as of October 2010.

LBJ was right, *sighs*.  The Dems strategy of incubating and nurturing the culture of dependency amongst the minority populations particularly has returned to them exponentially more than their initial investment.  I do see some encouraging signs of this abating from the last election, (Marco Rubio and Allen West are at the forefront of my mind, although there are several others), yet the overall trend is still discouraging, given that Obama and the Dems still enjoy too much popular support amongst Blacks and Hispanics.  *sighs*, even as the system they depend on falls apart before their very eyes, they still cling to promises of scraps of bread from their self-proclaimed Saviors i.e. masters.

Rush is right.  We have 10 years at most to turn this around.  Or, in the end...there will be only chaos.

IMHO, independents are the guys that go to work, take care of their kids, and occasionally tune into the 6:00 news to see what is happening. As long as they "feel" the economy is doing OK they will vote for a "reasonable" sounding incumbent. They are not motivated by "ideology (knowing and understanding issues) but are motivated by their pocketbook, the general mood of their community, national security, and a candidate that looks OK.

Problem for barry is that even if GDP grows by 3 points the next two years, unemployment will be 10%, (look up Okun's law. 5% GDP growth will only drop unemployment 1%) deficit will be crushing, and more houses will be underwater than in the 9th ward. Now his job should be to appear reasonable. Ha, good luck with that you commie scum.

62 One thing to remember about liberals is that they really are as clueless as they seem about the rest of America. Just yesterday I was sitting in the coffeeshop with my laptop, and at the next table were a pair of the energetic old lefty women who are the mainstay of upper-middle-class liberal politics. One of them was talking about some organizing effort she's part of, to locate and retain wealthy donors to liberal causes. Then she starts ragging on the TEA Party and how foolish they are to support tax breaks "for the rich."

She spends her day sucking up to rich people who own the Democratic party, but she still believes (and repeats like a statement of faith) that the Republicans are the party of the rich, and it's just "false consciousness" which keeps poorer conservatives from voting Dem. This is the same mindset that Obama has -- he still believes he's somehow not getting the message out, because the idea that people don't agree with the message is something his neurons simply cannot process.

63 I don't see how the black vote would make that much of a difference either way.  Due to our own short-sightedness, there aren't enough black Americans in the population to make a difference.  We may make the most noise, but "it's the numbers, stupid," as Mark Steyn pointed out in America Alone wrt to demographics.  Abortion and crime have taken their toll.

65 She'd still have a D next to her name, which seems to be all that's necessary to get 75%+ of the black vote.

The Democrats can't win much of anything if they're only getting 75% of the black vote. Blacks are 12% of the population, and they went for Obama by approximately 104% in 2008. Dropping to 75% support means that Hillary gets 3% fewer votes overall. The loss of that margin virtually ensures a GOP win.

It's probably wildly inappropriate to re-link a spam link that I would never in a million years click on myself but I'm curious...

I'm in the midst of some tough times economically myself but I'm pretty sure that I've never worried about the price of blue jeans.

Sure, I've got about 5 pair lying around (2 of which make my ass look fabulous!) so I haven't exactly been in the market to purchase new ones lately.

So, I'm left to wonder...

Are jeans incredibly expensive nowadays?

Have they become some sort of luxury commodity unobtainable by the average consumer in the past few years?

Who the hell needs to find "cheap jeans"?

"...and at the next table were a pair of the energetic old lefty women who are the mainstay of upper-middle-class liberal politics. One of them was talking about some organizing effort she's part of..."

Yes, their ideology is corrupt, their philosophies intellectually bankrupt, their politicians even worse than ours, and their ability to form a coherent thought completely nil.  But this...this right here is the reason we lose to them more often than not and why we don't crush them at the polls - organizing

They have us beaten on all levels of it - from legit organizing to organizing voter fraud.  They've got the time, the energy, the discipline, and the absence of scruples.

Not saying that we should adopt unscrupulous tactics, but we just had a taste of the organization...organization that they've had for decades and we damn near wiped them out.  That's why I thought AoSHQ was completely indispensible during the midterms.  Ace was pushing organizing, not just simply voting.  It's not just about messaging the individual voting anymore (probably hasn't been since the early 19th century), but that's where our side is stuck.

We can totally beat them at their own game, legally.  That's why I hope Ace includes an organizing element to the blog for 2012.

The Moonbats will be furious with him and will want a Van Jones type radical (not saying he'd be the one they'd put forward, but someone with many of his views).  The "Moderates" will be appalled at how fast they're losing power and will want someone who has a chance of fooling the American public.  Hillary fits that mold, sort of, as do a few others.  Collin Powell going Dem might, but I don't see that one either.

Posted by: Jeff at December 08, 2010 10:53 AM (A3tpD)

And what a font of no knowledge you are. Do you know what an independent is? It is a person who is not registered with either Party.

Independents are not this mythical group of drooling idiots who drag from day to day with no knowledge and then go into the polls and vote for who had the best ads.

Those fools make up probably less than 1% of the voters. This contrary to what the MFM always spouts.

What you, and the MFM are confusing are the stupid "undecideds".

Real independents who vote regularly vote with one Party or the other routinely voting for the same or they don't vote at all.occasionally one gets disgusted with his favorite Party and starts voting with the other, but that is not different than the registered members who switch Parties.

The key isn't winning independents, it is getting out your base by first giving them a red meat candidate and then having a good ground plan.

This.  I'm, technically, an independent.  If anyone here thinks that means I would ever vote Democrat except in the most extreme of cases, they're delusional.

I'm just as much a part of the Republican "base" as someone registered as a Republican- more so, in many ways, since I actually contact my Senators and Rep fairly regularly.  The people either party should be concerned with are their base.  Let the Independents (that is, the undecideds, since most 'independents' just haven't registered with either party) come to you.

Like the movie said, "If you build it, they will come."  In this case 'it' is a platform of true economic liberty and independence, true religious(or Social, if you prefer) tolerance and freedom, and a national defense which will make any country think twice before allowing themselves to be placed in our "enemies" category.

132 i hate to be the downer but: in the general election (which obama will be in) the liberals will vote for him cause they will HATE whoever the repub is.  blacks will stay with him at a 99.9% rate even if he declares himself as satan.  there are states worth about 260 electoral college votes that we have NO chance of winning.  we will win back the south (nc and va) and ind etc...but what happens with the hispanic vote in NV, CO and NM will decide who wins.  and that is bad news for the good guys.

If you go back and look at the 2008 election you will find that Obama won my converted a few States that had previously voted Red. OH, FL, NC, VA, etc.

The Presidential election is not like the Senate elections on that score where both getting out their base makes a tie or a win depending on normal color of State.

Those States that had flipped for Obama flipped because the Republicans stayed at home. If the Republicans come out to vote in 2012 like they did in 2010, they will win regardless of whether the Dems come out or not.

I am not sure I would agree with that, except perhaps in the Presidential elections.

Take recent elections in CO. That was won by the movement of CA liberal yuppies and Hispanics. There are that many blacks in CO.

Also, there were Statewide elected Dems in ND. ND has almost zero blacks in it. I have ore blacks living within a 1 radius of my house than live in the entire State of ND.

141 An "act of betrayal" if Hillary ran? Get real. These are democrats. Nonetheless, she won't run. (And even if she did, how long would the magic last? Policy-wise, she's Obama in a pant-suit.) No, they're stuck with Obama. What will happen as he continues to erode? Just look at patterns to answer this. He'll double- and triple-down with what he knows: brute lies and force, abuses of incumbency and, of course, voter fraud. The media will collude, ramp up fears of a goose-stepping, right-wing takeover and the plunge into a national nightmare of old people thrown into the streets, plutocrats laughing at bedraggled peons from limos and World War III on four fronts. All the usual suspects will rally around Obama -- intoxicated with the new delusion that he'll "come around" in a second term. It'll be "hope and change" redux, only this time tinged with panic, with the underlying reality of their failures and the consequences. While plenty deluded, these people are not rich in imagination. They do what they know, because it's all they know.

150 Put away-- You understand virtually nothing about electoral mechanics. Black Republicans/independents have left the reservation. That's why Zero's standing among blacks overall has fallen from 95 percent to 90 or thereabouts. He needed not only their complete support in 2008, but also a massive percentage of independents and Republican women. Plus, he needed a very high turnout...all of this just to squeak past a weak, flawed and uninspiring John McCain running on circa 2002 platform. I don't know if you are some kind of troll or what, but did you happen to see what happened in Florida, Indiana and North Carolina last month?Zero is done. He and BenRon have screwed up the economy so badly that it won't recover for at least five years, possibly 10 or more. His fate is sealed. The only question is whether he will run again. He will, IMHO, because it's the only thing he likes to do.

Even if Obama decides not to run in 2012 the dems will still face the problem of a depressed turn out of black voters because they will see Obama's decision not to run as him being run out of office by whitey.

Its simply a case of their damned if they do and their damned if they don't. The reality that the only thing that can save the Obama Presidency at this stage is if there is a dramatic turn around in the economy over the next year or so. And quite frankly given whats going on economically at the moment both here and elsewhere in the world it doesn't appear likely that we will see any significant improvement over the next 12 months at all.

155 Jane, at least you are further South and on the coast. It was 12.1°F here this morning. It has just now got above freezing here.

Hee!

My brother has a business, located in Chicago, that is mostly seasonal and is married to a flight attendant so he has his pick of places to hang out during the winter months, pretty much whenever he wants.

(Either friends in sunny FL or family in sunny AZ

We had a very fun Thanksgiving dinner with he and his wife even though she was only in town for 10 hours.

Little bro was kind of annoyed about how cold it was here that day (me, I found it to be kind of "bracing" really.  I sometimes enjoy the ability to tolerate a long sleeved light sweater when the sun is shining. But I'm a sucker for novelty, I suppose.) and bugged out with his lovely bride back to Chicago.

Announced that he was taking off for FL this week, "where it is warm!".

(Reuters) - Temperatures dipped into the low 30s for much of Florida's orange-growing region early Wednesday but it did not appear to have gotten cold enough to damage the crop, weather reports indicated.

Hee!

No. I haven't called him to ask how things are going.

I mocked my little brother mercilessly (and effectively) as an older sister when we were little kids.

As an adult, I'm trying to make up for some of the horrible mind-games I pulled on him when he was a pathetically easy target.

Deety's Little Brother: Deety!  I can't sleep!  Tell me a story! Tell me a ghost story but don't make it too scary! OK?!?

DeetyWhaa?? What time is it? Why are you in my room?  GET OUT!!!

DLB:  Shhh! Be quiet! I can't sleep! I need you to tell me a story!

Deety:  (whispers venomously) You can't read?! You are more stupid than you look!  Here's a flashlight, go get a book and start reading and leave me alone! (decisively turn her back and digs head into pillow)

DLB:  No. I need you to tell me a story, a good one. Those ones in books never change!

Deety:  (vanity successfully appealed to, rolls eyes and sighs heavily) Okay. Fine.  Hop in.  What kind of story do you want?

DLB:  A scary story!  With ghosts and Axe-Murderers!

Deety:  Are you sure?  If I make the story super scary do you promise not to cry?

DLB:  I'm not a baby!

Deety:  Okay... Here goes: Once upon a time, there was some kid who bears some superficial resemblances to yourself that will become all the more chilling later on, busy doing a very happy-ass thing like catching tadpoles one day...

..and then....

Deety's Parents: (busting down the door because one of their children is suddenly wailing for no good reason) What did you do? What did you do to your little brother!

Deety: (Innocently) I was telling him a story!  He asked me to! (hisses to little brother: "You said you wouldn't cry!  Big Baby!)

Deety's folks:
He's terrified!  It's going to take us forever to get him back to sleep!  You should know better than this!

Deety:  (feeling all butthurt and unfairly in trouble, thinks to herself...) Get him back to sleep?! You people are dreaming!  If he had been properly put down in the first place we wouldn't have this brou-ha-ha in the first place!

That was a scary story, though!

Heh!

This is doubtful, but possible. If Obama gets kicked upstairs ( ex: ambassador to the UN) then who is left to complain? Not Obama; he was paid off. Not the Dems, they rid themselves of an otherwise immovable object. Not the MFM, who will do what they're told. The Right? Doubt it.

If he is induced to exit gracefully, then he will be just like Jesse Jackson and Sharpton; they played their respective gambits, got their payoffs, and withdrew.I agree that the crucial point is exiting gracefully (on his terms).

The only alternative would be similar to the OJ civil trial and his subsequent multiple acts of stupidity. Notice how enthusiasm tapered off? Aso notice what it took to deflate that particular balloon.

The average black voter did not express anger or lack of enthusiasm after Jackson and Sharpton left the stage. Might some state that he should run again? I'm sure that there will be some. Can we prove that a significant percentage will not turn out or oppose whomever is their candidate? If not, then this is a feasable route for the Dems. Again the key is that Obama either exits of his own volition, or the nightmare scenario where he cracks up like OJ. Those are the only ways that Obama is not the nominee in 2012 and the Dems do not lose the black voting bloc.

One final question: I'm not aware of the numbers but I am curious as to this. Were any of Obama's victories (states) due solely to not only the black vote, but of an exceptionally high black vote? I ask because if he isn't present in 2012, then no one should expect that particular level of support, no matter who runs. The same can be said for any category of voter. How many of them voted that way simply because of his being black? Unless we can prove that there is such a group, and that it is large, and that they cannot be induced to vote Dem for any other reason, then Obama's being the nominee is overstated. As long as Dems think that they can placate some or most of these people, and can not alienate the black voting blo, then that option is open.

What is it with this 'Obama is unbeatable in 2012 because of the black vote' thing some people have come up with? Blacks voted for Obama at a percentage in the high nineties in 2008, and he got 52% of the total vote. Even if blacks vote for him again in 2012 at a 90+% rate, essentially as a bloc, he can still lose to a Republican.  Just need to get another 3% of everybody else.

Besides - two years is a long time. As it stands, things are not going to get much better. They might even get worse. That's not what I want - but it's highly likely with this continuing Democrat President and Senate. And his long-awaited meltdown has only just begun. I think in the future, he will exceed the suckitude of his post-tax-cut extension press conference many times over.  He is not smart enough or pragmatic enough to rescue himself.  I anticipate more voter defections. Many more. He's radioacitve.

"The reality that the only thing that can save the Obama Presidency at this stage is if there is a dramatic turn around in the economy over the next year or so."

I wish that were true, but two years is an eternity in politics. The economy may still be horrible then, and just as importantly, it may still FEEL horrible. But then again, it may not. There are serious economists out there that believe 2011 will not be a bad year, and that is without anything dramatic occurring or factoring the impact of the extension of the Bush tax cuts into the mix.

Just as Clinton was quick to grab sole credit (with the compliance of the LSM) for welfare reform in 1996, Obama and the LSM will be working overtime to spin any improvement between now and the election as his doing.

There is also the chance for an unforeseen game changer between now and then.

I'll choose an improving economy over political considerations any day. And he is surely in a tough spot right now, which we can all take pleasure in. Just saying, let's not for a second get cocky and delude ourselves into thinking an one term Obama presidency and a 2012 Republican victory is some kind of slam dunk in any way, shape, or form.

172 I'll have to disagree re Hillary losing the black vote in the general.  I'm reminded of a local talk show in Chicago I listened to in the early fall of '96.  The host and guest, both black women, were discussing Bill's first term and they hated it.  The guest went through a laundry list of things in which Bill had "turned his back" on the black community.  But when the host asked her what black voters should do in the upcoming election, the guest just as enthusiastically stated that they had to do everything in their power to see t it that Bill was elected again because "the alternative is so much worse".  Remember that alternative was the innocuous Bob Dole.  If she is the D nominee, she'll get their vote - because the alternative is soooo much worse.
