His argument was that a good many blacks who enter the peacetime military are, or over time become, "lifers" looking for a civil service post. I get why Obama wants Black voters to turn out.

I think I get why Obama wants Latino voters to turn out.  (Though I am not sure what concrete achievements he can point to on their behalf.)

I'm not sure I get why Obama wants young people to turn out.  There seems to be a lot of anecdotal evidence in the media about how young people have come to see Obama not for what they imagined him to be when they voted in 2008, but what he's actually turned out to be since, and are largely disappointed.

I don't get why Obama wants women voters to turn out.  He's accomplished nothing for women voters and offers nothing to them.  I guess he's just hoping that they will stick to their recent tradition of voting Democrat.  I don't think they will -- I think the most motivated women voters are the ones planning to vote Republican.

I also note that Obama didn't call for Jewish voters to turn out.   Either he's assuming they will and will vote Democrat, or he knows he's screwed up badly with them, or he doesn't want to offend the other groups by lumping them in with Jews.

There is a very simple reason he wants blacks, Latinos, and women to turn out to the polls in great numbers: those cohorts vote for him. 70 I joined the Army Infantry in 94.  I remember liberals always saying that minorities, especially blacks, were filling up the ranks of the combat arms MOS'.  I was actually shocked when I got to basic training and found so few blacks in my training company.  I got to my first unit and it was the same, mostly white guys looking for action with very patriotic attitudes.  I did notice whenever I needed paperwork done it was usually handled by a black soldier in the PAC office.  I am not disparaging black soldiers just relaying my experience with this issue.

What you're describing, Ace, is and old argument that combines #2 and #3. As you said, #1 makes sense when it applies -- and by implication, so does #4 if I'm going to be pragmatic and calculating in my politics.

If I'm not a Paolo or a Paulina, then #1 doesn't apply to me. But I have to fit somewhere demographically, so #4 can't apply either. That leaves the propositions about someone "deserving" something. Though these are the weakest positions, it's all they have, so they argue these points with everything they've got.

That was the great error of the Obama-voting middle and right.  They ASSUMED that the liberals would make that bargain.  No one ever got that promise from any liberal.  No liberal organizations made that offer.  So when the election was over and the middle and right Obama-voters continued to hear accusations of racism flying as thick and fast as before, they were flummoxed, and their confusion has turned to hurt and resentment.

Every time this shit starts I think to myself we should just go ahead and have a race war. Last race standing gets it all. As whites outnumber everyone in North America and as blacks and latinos hate each other, I am sure white folks will be last man standing.

But then...

I think of all the great folks I know who also happen to be black, chicano, oriental, etc.

It is not just the 'economic' argument of voting for one's self interest that is hypocritical.  What of the political?  Ninety some percent of blacks voted for Obama in the 08 Presidential election.  Do 90+% of blacks agree with the far-left, progressive, statist, racialist, pro-gay, pro illegal immigration views of Obama?  Certainly not.  Then why NO news stories, MSM or otherwise, to analyze the fact that many blacks voted for skin color, to the detriment of other considerations?  I was taught that considering skin color, above all else, was the very definition of racism.  But ONLY if you are white, they tell me now!
