I saw this a few years back, and I strongly recommend you watch it. It's a very silly documentary about an utterly trivial matter -- who will win the "Classic Arcade Games" official record for Donkey Kong? -- but it's just great. One of the most enjoyable documentaries I've seen.
Actually, it's a little more like a reality tv show than a documentary -- there is definitely a hero and villain here -- bust still, it's great.
Especially the political intrigues. Yes, there are political intrigues. Because the main story is about the goofball committee which officially recognizes Donkey Kong records corruptly denying the record to the real holder, in order to keep the record in the hands of their buddy, who's actually on the board of the record-certifying committee.
And also is a "Cool Dude," and therefore considered a "Good Ambassador" for classic gaming because he's so coool. At least he's cool in the minds of these other certified geek mutants. He's like their Golden Boy, and seriously, I think they think he's so cool because he's actually had sex with a woman. So of course that makes him King of the Geeks.
To the rest of us, to normal people, he just seems like another geek, except with a +5 Mullet of Douchebaggery.
Goofy as it is, this is still essentially a story about political corruption, and the "establishment" (such as it is) consipiring against the little guy to keep him out of the club, and even though it's about such a trivial matter, it still gets you going. Corruption is always dramatic, even if it's about a stupid insignificant video game record.
The cool thing is, you can actually watch the whole movie on YouTube, at least, I guess, until they figure out that a bunch of people are now viewing pirated material and shut it down. That's a link to part 1.
If it gets taken down, or you like basically like what you see, rent it. These guys made a good product and deserve a little somethin'-somethin' for that.
Spoiler below. Highlight with your mouse to see after you've watched it.
If you watch the whole thing, you should probably click on the Wikipedia entry, to find out what was true here and what wasn't.
Oh, 96% of it is true, but there is a little deceptive editing and withholding for dramatic purposes, especially near the end.
I sort of don't even want to mention this, and that's why I'm calling it a spoiler, because it sort of will spoil your fun to know that there is some manipulation at the climax.
But if you wind up being as nuts for this movie as I was, you'll probably want the full, real story.
As I said, it's almost all true. The falseness near the end is just a matter of withholding or deceptively implying, not really lying. But you do need to check the record for the actual facts.
If you care enough. But this dumb little documentary will probably make you care enough about exactly what happened in this weird mutant subculture digital duel.
Billy Mitchell Really Is a Douchebag: So says "fartbubble," and you can trust him, because his screenname is "fartbubble."
Billy Mitchel, Douchebag of the Century: As FUBAR, I think, said, "So he's good at video games and sells some hot sauce for chicken wings and he brings that much attitude to the table?"
Yup. It's not that getting a perfect score on Pac-Man isn't impressive, in a way. Not super-impressive, but I would have assumed it was impossible. It's... something.
It's just that... Dude, you can't talk with this much swagger over a freakin' arcade game score.
Just to recommend this again: If anyone doesn't want to watch it because they figure it's a dumb movie about video games, it's really not.
It's a movie about people.
One of whom is a douchebag. And several of whom are defective mutants and weird gamer-groupies who worship that douchebag.

Afterwards I read a quote from the director saying something to the effect of "I figured that if the main characters were confused about what was happening, then why should the audience be any different?" Apparently they loved it at Sundance, which should have told me everything right there.

I'll stick up for Primer. It's a good film, and by film I mean the 'art' variety of film not a movie. You have to be used to the pretentiousness of the smaller, no-budget flicks to appreciate it.
If you hated Primer, you'll probably hate Moon as well. It's a pretty good small-scale sci-fi movie. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Lost (tv show).

Moon was okay, a lot better than Primer.
Primer made no sense. They just made up shit at the end to explain the holes in the middle. And the holes exsited in the middle because the a-holes didn't know how to make a movie. So they conveniently tied up loose ends with a lame explanastion at the end.

"Art" is often a pretentious cover for directorial incompetence, and that's what happened with PRIMER. The first half-hour or so consists of nothing but the zombie-like characters talking to one another in terms that one would have to be an engineer to understand (assuming the dialogue wasn't total bullshit). When they finally begin their time-traveling experiments, it's hopeless, as we're given no understanding of how this shit works or even a clue of which versions of the characters we're looking it.
I usually eat this kind of stuff up but PRIMER was an unwatchable mess. Literally, at no point did I have more than the barest idea of what was going on. I made it through more of the hippie video from last night than I did this movie.

I watched this on TV a while back; don't know why.
Ace is right that it seemed more "reality TV" than documentary. Still, the nerdity, hero-worship, politics and general douchebaggery was amazing.
The Billy Mitchell douche could do no wrong in the eyes of the nerds under his thumb, while the guy that legitimately broke the record couldn't be trusted due to aligning himself with someone the group didn't approve of.
This group tried to pass itself as an unbiased sanctioning body that judged who had the highest scores, yet the bias towards Mitchell it was beyond obvious.
At one point Mitchell submitted an obviously doctored video, and they accepted that (and his word) as proof of a higher score. Yet the undoctored video from the guy that did they refused to accept seemingly no matter what he did. When the dude that broke the record challenged Mitchell to play against him live, Mitchell refused after saying he would.
The self-importance and weaselly behavior of the Mitchell douche on the show make him look completely unlikeable. It was hard decide whether he was that big a douche or was just portrayed that way for the show.
In the end, there were no winners though- the time and effort they spent over freaking Donkey Kong made everyone a loser.

You're absolutely right about the thesis possibilities in the movie. There's something universal in the way in which intrigue and competition increase as the stakes for a given competition decrease. It's seen any time a small group of purists (e.g., your average college faculty) start whipping out and measuring -- things that are incomprehensible differentiations to the rest of the world are suddenly vitally important to the clerics of the inner circle. Being an old videogamer I understood their language and assumptions, but I'm not sure anyone who missed the coin-op era would even care about the details. The drama is enough to recommend it.
I liked the scene about halfway through where the record-holders for the various "minor" games (Centipede, Marble Madness, Frogger, etc.) were introduced. Kind of like the star volleyball players and cross-country runners talking about the politics of the football team, they knew their station and it was below the DK players. I was also reminded somewhat of Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 in that one guy "was" Q*bert, another was Tapper, etc. Not quite the same as being the repository of Shakespeare, but parallel enough to be a good laugh.
Great recommendation.

been playing the SC2 beta. It's
okay but too many elite players (and playing at night is a waste as
there are too many Koreans).

Is it still available? I followed some links around the other night but never got my hands on it.
And yeah, elite players. Korea has a pro league. And the videos are posted by a guy who announces 'em.

nope, they were pretty strict on who got invites or not. Mostly to people who own all of their other games and have logged in A LOT of time on their old servers. If It wasn't for Diablo 2, I probably wouldn't have gotten in

And if you still enjoy and/or miss these old classic arcade games and grew up when there was an arcade in almost every town across the country, check out this link:
http://www.caextreme.org
If you can make it for the show dates, imagine a huge hall filled with 400+ original coin-op games, mostly from the heyday of the video arcade era (and pinballs, too), all set on free play (after an admission fee) for you to play again for a weekend (or until your eyes fall out
Come on down in July and see the show...I've been going to this show for years, and it is a BLAST if you enjoy this sort of stuff...
Check out the pictures on the website above to get an idea of what it's about...
Cheers!

Fascinating "documentary." Forget the nerdiness of it all. Most everything people obsessed with something do looks nerdy or stupid to those outside the clique. No, the interaction between the Billy Mullet Club members was simply a) captivating and b) nauseating. To invest so much to create an illusion of something so freakin' trivial is really a psychological case study.
Thankfully it was seen that Billy didn't measure up and at least one member (the "referee") did apologize though I'm guessing he did it because his actions would be seen by outsiders as ultimately corrupt and damaging to his gaming empire such as it was. IOW self-preservation forced a patina of moral ethics which really hid an underlying defense strategy.
I don't know why but for some reason this reminds me of government. I'm probably just being racist though.

When I showed it to my brother-in-law, who is in the finance business for a grocery store chain, he started laughing very, very hard when he saw Billy messing around with the bottles of hot sauce in the store. I asked him what was up and he said that he was putting his sauce waaaaaaaay in front of the vendors who had paid for better positioning. Great, subtle stuff.

Thers an emulator called MAME fir comps. That will play almost EVERY stand-up arcade game ever made. I have an original xbox, modded, that has over 3500 of the old arcade games, EVERY console game(except ps2 or dreamcast), and the old space ace, dragons lair, etc. Google mame for computers
