The places I've been don't ticket unless a cop witnesses the accident.  I assume - perhaps wrongly - the camera can substitute for the cop.

I don't see the privacy concerns.  You have no privacy when driving on the public roads.  If the camera takes a picture triggered by an objective event - sensor triggered during a red - all that's happening is that someone who is breaking the law is caught.  It's simply replacing having a police officer on every corner.

But I hate bad drivers and think a lot of them make a claim of "rights" when all they're doing is fucking with my right to drive without being hit by their out of control vehicles.

That doesn't even address the (admittedly anecdotal) evidence that cities then shorten yellow light cycles, that they "catch" people making legal right-on-red turns, etc.

The ticket is now sent to the owner of the vehicle not the driver (since they don't know who the driver is).  If I loaned my car to someone (or some stupid kids went joy-riding) I get the ticket.  Even in the case of the joy-ride, since I'm not able to defend myself to the city (I have to go through the "appeals" process of the operating company) it's a much bigger pain than it should be to have the ticket dismissed when I legitimately shouldn't be ticketed.

Our entire legal system is built on the idea that the State has to prove your guilt, not the other way around- part of that is making sure tickets are 100% accurate.  Next January, if you get a ticket (and it's still hand-written, most aren't any more), double-check the date.  If the cop accidentally puts "2010" on it, the ticket isn't valid and will get dismissed (if you contest it).

In many ways this is a pain, but this level of exacting standards is part of the protection we're supposed to have from the Government- and they're just ignoring it.

Actually, for that, they do work quite well (which is why I don't mind them in, and of, themselves).  When people know with almost 100% certainty that they'll get a ticket, they quit running the red lights.

That, though, starts its own problems: in one of the DFW Metroplex cities (Dallas, maybe?  But I thought it was one of the 'burbs) they're looking at getting rid of the cameras: they worked so well people aren't running red lights- so they're not generating any revenue and are accruing costs (monitoring, maintenance, etc.).

I got nailed for speeding a couple of times.  They wanted my license plate number in the memo field of the check.  Instead I put "Mayor Marty's Boat Fund" and "City of Albuquerque Fund for the Abolishment of the 6th Amendment".

I researched, established and ran my department's Photo Enforcement for two years before I retired.  In Ohio, these are civil infractions kind of like a parking ticket.  Like any other law enforcement technique, photo enforcement can be abused.  Not all communities are smart about building good-will in setting up these programs.  We had the local news broadcast the location of the enforcement zones a month prior to turning on the switch, gave warnings another 30 days after the cameras went operational and tried to give the drivers a little slack if they had a reasonable excuse.  This resulted in our citizens being supportive of the program and not feeling needlessly screwed.

Rear-end crashes are a symptom of speeding.  If you don't do speed enforcement at the same time, some users have seen a rise in rear-end crashes.  However, the severity of injuries are usually much reduced compared to the broadside crash of a red light violation.

We ran a combined speed and red-light photo enforcement program.  We didn't issue a speeding infraction until 15+ mph over the posted limit.  After two years, we saw a dramatic reduction in crashes and injuries.

Frankly, I'm less than impressed with the argument that anyone has the right to run red lights and speed.  I've pulled too many dead people out of cars.  The only legitimate argument is if the speed limit is set unreasonably low; but, if the city leaves that to their traffic engineer, that shouldn't be an issue.

Not here in Ohio.  A police officer has to view the images and video (there is a 12-second video clip) and then approve the notice of violation be issued.  After getting the ticket, the owner can request a hearing in front of a magistrate.

Like I said before, if the user is smart they can deflect a lot of criticism.  My Chief of Police and the City Council NEVER told me what to do.  I routinely changed a ticket into a warning if the person called me with a reasonable excuse.  However, start off telling me how I was violating your right to drive in violation of traffic law and at that point my willingness to listen went to zero and I'd tell that person to request a hearing with the magistrate.

No they aren't.  They're a symptom of the car in front of you slamming on its brakes in bumper-to-bumper traffic, trying to stop on a dime, because its driver has been conditioned by fear of these cameras to do so the moment the light turns yellow.  Collisions of this type routinely happen at speeds of 35 mph and under.

I was talking about two different things.  Our program enforced for both red light and speed violations.  I was trying to say that there was a possibility of a defense of the speeding violation if the community set the speed limit unreasonably -- like 25mph on a controlled access highway.  Not all users of photo enforcement are running a good program.

A defense for the red light violation might be something like "I tried to stop but slid through on the ice."  I could review the video, see your speed was low and your brake lights were illuminated.  At that point, no sweat - I made it a warning.

The more cameras we have the more crime increases. When I was growing up, security cameras were non existent. I remember the local K-Mart got ecurity cameras and it was the biggest deal. Has shoplifting decreased?  Look at DC. It's the freaking security camera capital of the world and yet how many murders take place there? How much crime is there in DC? The whole freaking government is corrupt!
Even when t eh installed cameras in the school buses it was suppose to stop bullying. I think that lasted about a week. Heck we've got  shows on TV broadcasting breakins, vandalism and theft all from security cameras! All it's done is make the thugs stars of their own reality shows!

Trust me on this one.  Most rear-end collisions are due to the driver of the rear car driving in excess of the posted speed limit and following too close. 

The worst street we  had for rear-end collisions before establishing the photo enforcement program was a four lane street with 35mph speed limit.  We were routinely having cars traveling 50+ mph.  We couldn't raise the speed limit because it was a residential street.

After setting up the photo enforcement program, the incidents of speeding went down and the rear-end collisions were almost entirely eliminated.

I don't have problems with Police enforcing reasonable laws, including traffic laws. Hell, my Son is a cop. My problem is with traffic cameras in general, and by extension "crime prevention cameras". They aren't there to uphold the law, they are there to screw people, for the most part. If not today, then in the future. They will become a tool of oppression, plain and simple.

124 The put the cameras up around here at the same time as they lowered all the speed limits (in the urban centers) and shortened yellow light lengths.

I don't think it helped safety, but we're the only town in California that's not broke, so I guess it did something (snark).

I keep telling them they need to lengthen the delay between one light turning red and the next turning green, but they never listen. Most red light running happens a second or two after the change (especially with all the new short yellows around here... there's one major intersection where I swear the yellow light lasts less than a second).
