— DrewM Labour was already in big trouble in the upcoming British elections but Gordon Brown just sunk his party.
Apparently he was doing a bit of campaigning while wearing a mic for a TV reporter. He seemed to have forgotten that he was miced up and while talking to an aide he was caught calling a lifelong Labour voter "a bigot".
Watch her reaction as she is told this and hears the Prime Minister say it.
Here's a transcript of the conversation Brown had with the woman. She mostly talks about the economy and touches briefly on immigration, which is a big issue in the UK.
Duffy: Look, the three main things that I had drummed in when I was a child was education, health service and looking after people who are vulnerable. There are too many people now who aren’t vulnerable but they can claim and people who are vulnerable can’t get claim.Brown: But they shouldn’t be doing that, there is no life for people on the dole anymore, if you’re unemployed you’ve got to go back to work. At six months –
Duffy: You can’t say anything about the immigrants because you’re saying you’re – but all these eastern Europeans coming in, where are they flocking from?
Brown: A million people come in from Europe, but a million British people have gone into Europe, you do know thereÂ’s a lot of British people staying in Europe as well. So education, health and helping people, thatÂ’s what IÂ’m about.
Duffy: I hope you keep to it.
Between the utter contempt shown by Brown for this woman and her concerns and the image of a 65 year old woman gob smacked by her PM's words are simply devastating to him and his party.
Watch the video at the link. Brown's reaction (about 1:43 in) when they play the tape for him of his remarks is priceless. He's a dead man walking and he knows it.
Now you know why Democrats are going to want to avoid town hall meetings again this summer.

If you watch the first encounter these two had, Brown comes off as completely disingenous. His phoniness was so thick.
Brown's fake friendliness was as transparent as glass. He hated to be with that 'regular' woman and it was clear as day.

She says this like it's a good thing.
"Hey, I've been propagandized since birth and I haven't given it any rational criticism."

So, DrewM, the last time you called me a bigot for opposing gay marriage, that is different somehow, right?

But you know, the woman is an ass, too. Her bitch wasn't just that 'foreigners' were sucking on the teet of British taxpayers, it was that they were getting a better deal than her!
She's a parasite, too, and she's bitching about foreign parasites.

She was complaing about paying taxes on her welfare check, as I understand it.
Both Brown and the limey old woman are equally disgusting, in my opinion. Brown felt disgusted that he had to pander to such people, which is funny because it shows how low the UK has sunk since the times of Winston Churchill.
Can you imagine Churchill entertaining that old bat's 'concerns' for a second?

Waterhouse at reply #9 is absolutely correct. Any party to the right of Lenin in Europe is called "conservative." John McCain is a right wing extremist next to what passes for a conservative in Europe and the UK.
It is kinda sweet to watch Brown show the world what a condescending slimeball he is. Trust me, our liberals here in the US are cut from the same cloth.

The one flaw Americans have is that they're so obsessed with fighting the battles they want to fight, they have absolutely no "ear" for any other culture. All these sneers about where Mrs. Duffy's income comes from are beside the point and just show American provincialism.
Listen very carefully. Go. Fuck. Yourself.

Hope Brown already shopped for a house. The day he's defeated, 10 Downing will be emptied of his belongings faster than you can say "Big Ben".

Are you in the UK or from there? If so, what's your take on what this does to the race?
I haven't followed this election as closely as I would have like but it seems Brown just threw the whole thing up in the air. Well, it was already but this is a disaster 8 days out.
He's going to be killed tomorrow night by Clegg and Cameron.

Yeah, and I'm also not a 65-year-old pensioner from the UK and Drew's not running for Prime Minister; get away from the physical for just a second and check out the subject with a wider angel lens.
Just as wrong as leftys calling those people who oppose total amnesty racists, it is just as wrong when one of our own does the same thing.
What's the difference now? Very little I say.

It did happen here with the "clinging to their guns and religion" comment and it was ignored. It also happened with Joe the Plumber and the press tried to destroy his life
Posted by: TheQuietMan at April 28, 2010 01:12 PM (1Jaio)
Mrs. Duffy was so stunned at Brown's comment, not just that she was called a bigot, but that he was such a phony to her face.
Well, she's been outed as a racist, she may as well start her local Brit Tea Party chapter. Mrs. D, you haven't lived until you've received the Joe the Plumber treatment. (Although the UK press seems to be sympathetic to her.)
Posted by: kallisto at April 28, 2010 01:16 PM (+FkcS)
Yeah, those are two Obama blow ups I thought but they weren't as fatal because as you say, the media protected Obama but also there was no direct target.
If Obama were on tape referring to a very specific voter who 'clung to guns and religion' and that voter were a sympathetic figure like a 65 year old widow, he would have been hurt badly by it.
The visuals and the personalization are what kill Brown.
That and Brown is a very unsympathetic character who is down in the polls and Obama was popular and leading.

David Cameron is an extremely compelling candidate. In the last debate, he worked the camera like a two-dollar whore, while Clegg came off boyish and petulant, bickering at every chance.
The Guardian says it's a net gain for the Liberal Democrats. But from what I've seen of polling in the UK, it's even more hit and miss there than here.

Add to that, "typical white person" about his own grandmother and to the female reporter, "Not now sweetie". Showing what an arrogant condescending prick he is. But again the press ignored it. If Barry was Jack the Ripper the press would ignore it and/or defend him.

Maybe you should look at it from a wider angle lens. So Drew called you a bigot or something a few days ago. Stop sniveling, dry your eyes and blow your nose. This thread is about a politician who just shot himself in the foot with a shotgun, not about your hurt feelings.

I recommend that smart and good Brits just sit this election out.
Whoever wins is going to enact the exact. same. policies. Maybe Cameron will wave the Union Jack a little more, Clegg a little less. Fiscal ruin is coming up, a la Iceland, and none of the three major parties (and still less the BNP) have any sort of handle on what to do.
Expect more Brits to move to the US, Australia, and (if they can afford it) nicer islands in the Caribbean.

*The American provincialism comment ticked me off too; I'm sick of the arrogant attitude that usually accompanies that. However, Dr. Mabuse appears to be a Canadian mom who advocates for conservative values in her own country - if her blog is any indication. I'll give Canadians a pass on their own irritation with our "provincialsim", since we generally think of Canada as "America's hat."
Her blog entry about Obama as a man with no country is reason alone to welcome her as a fellow moron.
