The Moment Gordon Brown Killed The Labour Party
— DrewM

Labour was already in big trouble in the upcoming British elections but Gordon Brown just sunk his party.

Apparently he was doing a bit of campaigning while wearing a mic for a TV reporter. He seemed to have forgotten that he was miced up and while talking to an aide he was caught calling a lifelong Labour voter "a bigot".

Watch her reaction as she is told this and hears the Prime Minister say it.

Here's a transcript of the conversation Brown had with the woman. She mostly talks about the economy and touches briefly on immigration, which is a big issue in the UK.

Duffy: Look, the three main things that I had drummed in when I was a child was education, health service and looking after people who are vulnerable. There are too many people now who arenÂ’t vulnerable but they can claim and people who are vulnerable canÂ’t get claim.

Brown: But they shouldn’t be doing that, there is no life for people on the dole anymore, if you’re unemployed you’ve got to go back to work. At six months –

Duffy: You can’t say anything about the immigrants because you’re saying you’re – but all these eastern Europeans coming in, where are they flocking from?

Brown: A million people come in from Europe, but a million British people have gone into Europe, you do know thereÂ’s a lot of British people staying in Europe as well. So education, health and helping people, thatÂ’s what IÂ’m about.

Duffy: I hope you keep to it.

Between the utter contempt shown by Brown for this woman and her concerns and the image of a 65 year old woman gob smacked by her PM's words are simply devastating to him and his party.

Watch the video at the link. Brown's reaction (about 1:43 in) when they play the tape for him of his remarks is priceless. He's a dead man walking and he knows it.

Now you know why Democrats are going to want to avoid town hall meetings again this summer.

If you watch the first encounter these two had, Brown comes off as completely disingenous. His phoniness was so thick.

Brown's fake friendliness was as transparent as glass. He hated to be with that 'regular' woman and it was clear as day.

She was complaing about paying taxes on her welfare check, as I understand it.

Both Brown and the limey old woman are equally disgusting, in my opinion. Brown felt disgusted that he had to pander to such people, which is funny because it shows how low the UK has sunk since the times of Winston Churchill.

Can you imagine Churchill entertaining that old bat's 'concerns' for a second?

Waterhouse at reply #9 is absolutely correct. Any party to the right of Lenin in Europe is called "conservative." John McCain is a right wing extremist next to what passes for a conservative in Europe and the UK.

It is kinda sweet to watch Brown show the world what a condescending slimeball he is. Trust me, our liberals here in the US are cut from the same cloth.

Yeah, those are two Obama blow ups I thought but they weren't as fatal because as you say, the media protected Obama but also there was no direct target.

If Obama were on tape referring to a very specific voter who 'clung to guns and religion' and that voter were a sympathetic figure like a 65 year old widow, he would have been hurt badly by it.

The visuals and the personalization are what kill Brown.

That and Brown is a very unsympathetic character who is down in the polls and Obama was popular and leading.

58 The problem for the Brits is that their other option is either the Liberal Democrats (same as labor) or "conservative party" (same as labor) and what's the point? There is an independent party running but they can't get enough seats and thus are powerless.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at April 28, 2010 01:46 PM (PQY7w)

59 Cameron deserves to lose. The Labour Party has had no reason to exist since the 1990s, and it deserves to disintegrate. The BNP is evil, and economically stupid, so I hope they don't get any seats. That leaves the Lib Dems: also stupid and evil, but they best reflect the stupid and evil British electorate right now, so they deserve to win more than the others.

I recommend that smart and good Brits just sit this election out.

Whoever wins is going to enact the exact. same. policies. Maybe Cameron will wave the Union Jack a little more, Clegg a little less. Fiscal ruin is coming up, a la Iceland, and none of the three major parties (and still less the BNP) have any sort of handle on what to do.

Expect more Brits to move to the US, Australia, and (if they can afford it) nicer islands in the Caribbean.

60 I also recommend stringent questions be asked of any Brits who want to migrate here. Minimum requirement is that they have a private-sector job waiting for them. Also, minimum B's on their GCSE in courses like Maths, any of the hard sciences, Classical Civilisations, Latin, and Greek. History, English, Geology etc etc doesn't count.

61 apparently, the british left is no better then the american left. i am so sick and tired of people suggesting that the culture of caucasian european-westerners is unimportant, and irrelevant, but that preserving the culture of anyone who is non-caucasian, or non-western IS worth preserving. of all the occidentalist nonsense, this has got to be the biggest lie there is. look, the very idea of lumping europeans or western europeans into one big abstraction is about as stupid as saying that there is no difference between a mexican or a spaniard from a cultural stand point. sorry, france and england have their own unique cultural traditions, and god forbid you should ever mistake a norwegian for a swede. don't believe me? just try it one time. better yet, try mistaking an irishman for a brit, or call an australian a scottsman. want a better example, one closer to home? o.k., next time you meet a canadian, just try telling him that there is no difference between canada and the u.s.. yeah, just try it. it will make for a real pleasant conversation i can assure you. why do these distinctions matter? because everyone roots for their own team. there is nothing wrong with it. everyone has the right to preserve and celebrate thier own culture. but somehow in today's broader public forum, if you are caucasian, of western european descent, the very suggestion that you have the right to preserve, and celebrate your own culture will result in you being called a bigot, or racist, or "nativist." of course, it's acceptable for eveyrone else. what a bunch of b.s..
