— Maetenloch Groovy Tuesday - LSD, Psychedelics, the ONT and You
Here's a totally groovy anti-drug film from the 70's that tries to be 'with it' with the kids. It's narrated by Tommy Roe who's best known for his 60's hits "Sheila" and "Dizzy". The music and bongo transitions are a nice touch. And is it me or do most of the kids in this film have an odd drawling accent? Maybe it's bad acting, just a regionalism or maybe teenspeak really has changed over the last 40 years.
So don't do drugs kids. Or else you'll up like the people in this video wearing bad fashion, saying goofy things and having to chat with a ginger psychologist with a pornstache.
While I applaud the idea of WikiLeaks in principle, so far their leaks all seem targeted against the US government and military and the usual bugbears of the left. Which makes them just a another lefty group. Oh and the founder and operator of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, is no saint.

US Military Gets New 'Green' 5.56mm Ammo
It's 'green' because it uses less lead in its manufacture. But it also seems to be a better round in general:
The M855A1 resulted in a number of significant enhancements not found in the current round, officials said. They explained these include improved hard-target capability, more dependable, consistent performance at all distances, improved accuracy, reduced muzzle flash and a higher velocity.
During testing, the M855A1 performed better than current 7.62mm ball ammunition against certain types of targets, blurring the performance differences that previously separated the two rounds.

PGiS, can you still get Cascade Total in WA? That still has phosphates in it.
I thought it was just Spokane that had the phosphate free detergent. I just checked my Cascade under the sink. It says it has 5.5% phosphate. I don't know if that's reduced from the Total or not. It's called Cascade Advance. Kind of ironic that a detergent that has the same name as one of most prominent mountain ranges has been emasculated.

Not after Thursday, it will be against the law for a retailer to sell consumer dishwashing detergent with phosphates in it after July 1. Commercial detergents are exempt--all but admitting the non-phosphate stuff is crap. I have 6 boxes in my garage and am going out tomorrow to hopefully score a couple more. I assume it won't break down for a couple of years (CHEMJEFF-how soon does phosphate based detergent break down).
I also have to stock up on the soda pop as that tax goes into effect as well. Still haven't figured out all that one covers.

I hate to break it to all of you, but they are predicting by early next year that all dishwashing detergents sold in the US will be mostly phosphate free because something like 20 states have bans on them so it will be cheaper for the manufacturers to conform that way. So, those of you thinking you are lucking out in non stupid states will not be.
Interesting aside, laundry detergent has actually been phosphate free for a long time, I think since the early 90s. I believe the water saving machines is what is causing a lot of the current problems because phosphate free laundry detergent works fine to get clothes clean--I assume because of the different basis for the dirt vs. food particles etc.

phosphates kill fish or something. And even though the water treatment plants filter it out supposedly a bunch is still getting in the water.
Let's face reality, liberals are not going to be satisfied until we are using rocks to wash our clothes and line drying them and doing our dishes by hand with eco friendly soap and a water cut-off timer that only allots a certain number of hours a week to the running of water. We'll be eating soy based fake foods, and there will no longer be access to real coffee or chocolate. Life, in other words, in the liberal version of the future, is going to suck absolutely.

Because hippies-liberals-econuts hate things that actually work?
Well, that too, hence we get the reduced water loos that take several flushes to get crap all the way down and waste even more water than the older toilets that only need on flush.
Phosphates are a limiting growth agent in my environments, so people don't want excess phosphates getting into the rivers and streams (and even in the Gulf of Mexico) causing algae blooms that deprive oxygen to higher organisms such as fish. However, this banning of phosphates in dishwashing detergent is again government over-reach and probably won't affect the amount of extra phosphates getting into the water one bit. PGiS is right - have the dishwashing machines use more water to get the dishes clean the first time.

Here's a list of the 50 most-looked-up words by New York Times readers so far this year. Let's see how you do.
F* the NYT and their ridiculous usage of a non-standard vocabulary.
Good writing is writing that is accessible to EVERYBODY. Using two bit words that make you feel smart only proves your innate insecurity and alienates potential readers.
2 of the words were almost the same: "Profligate" and "Profligacy". Perfect words to describe Democrat spending. I doubt that was the context in which they were used, though, this being the NY Times.

Get LED lightbulbs, be sure to get the ones with Cree's X-lamp LEDs in them (because they're better, not just because I work for them). Expensive, yes, but last virtually forever and no mercury to worry about when it comes time to dispose of them. And the light is fantastic, I have a pair of the 7w downlamps in my kitchen and they throw as much light as a pair of regular 60w bulbs while consuming 7w apiece.

Well the Lmg's and GPMG's tend to do a better job of that at most ranges. A rifleman who uses full auto isn't going to have any ammo left after a minute or two of firing. You can go through ten clips pretty fast and there is no way you can carry enough ammo to keep up with it.

A minister was involved in an extraordinary public spat yesterday after branding Commons speaker John Bercow a 'stupid, sanctimonious dwarf'.
Mr Burns's comments came after Mr Bercow twice asked him to address the despatch box rather than Government backbenchers.
The Speaker pointed out that other ministers had been similarly warned and had managed to fully 'understand' the instruction.
Apparently enraged by the reprimand, Mr Burns shook his head and mouthed the words 'stupid, sanctimonious dwarf' at the Speaker, who claims to be 5ft 6in.
At the same time, the minister ostentatiously lowered his hand to indicate Mr Bercow's short stature.

I'm looking up pricing, the cheapest way to get me and some boxable items there. Other things would be cheaper to replace than ship I can toss, or ask someone to store for me until I can get them. Even if I had gotten the 4th extension, it would only be 6 more weeks and at this rate, I'd still be sucking wind.
If anyone has unused frequent flyer miles that are transferable, let me know.

I may be wrong, but I believe M855 has always been known as "green" ammo because of the green tip which designated it as a "penetrator" round. That designation was rather a misnomer in that black tipped ammo is tungsten cored and is "supposed" to be an armor piercing round. I don't think the "green" really has anything to do with eco-friendliness.

Ideally, we need more deliberate fire 7.62 weapons and trained operators for the engagement ranges in AStan, the RoE favor deliberate fire, and the body armor and "shoot to stop" issues everywhere.
I would like to see a lightweight 7.62 case.

Only games I really "cheated" at are RTS PC games (Starcraft, Warcraft) where I would put in codes to give me unlimited resources.

PGiS, I love DeMille and find them very zippy reads. Maybe one or two he's written don't fit that profile, but I would encourage you to give him a try. Start with Gold Coast, it's good and trashy, but not embarrassingly so.

thats something to think about KB........ and if you have never driven across the country before. its something everyone should do at least once. i drove from LA to Miami once, the same way you would go and had a blast doing it.

One thing I'd have to think about is what kind of shape that camper is in, and whether it's got some hidden compartments to transport "stuff"

Yes he is liking the game so far. And these aren’t “cheats” as in codes you type in to get the stuff without completing the level, rather it is directions in areas where you are stuck and can’t seem to get out, stuff like “stack the lego bricks on the platform.” Usually within a week there is a game walkthrough on gamefaqs.
I don’t mind him using the walkthrough stuff since it isn’t “cheat codes” because you still have to do the work in the game, but after a while it gets mind numbingly repetitive to run around a room trying to figure out what to do. Especially a problem in the Lego games, most tasks are fairly easy, but sometimes they make no sense, also you don’t lose lives as much in the Lego games so you can be stuck in the same place forever. The worst was in Lego Star Wars when you had to hit a series of Lego bricks in a certain order and keep them lit, but you needed another brick to set down in one specific place to make it all work.

I donÂ’t mind shooting a bunch of shit in video games, what I hate is when you have to shoot exactly the center of a certain target and each time you fail you die and you have to re-start someplace farther back, run through the stuff again, only to shoot the target, die, and get booted back again. Some games have realistically spaced save points, other games are enough to make me want to pull out my hair and scream.
And I hate having to hit obscure button combinations in a certain order so I can fly fast and puff smoke and shoot grenades out my butt all at the same time.
Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at June 29, 2010 08:26 PM (RZ8pf)
The Percy Jackson books were great, the movie was horrible. Man, you shouldÂ’ve heard the kids complain about it, IÂ’ve never heard a bunch of 8-14 year olds so disillusioned as after that movie came out. We saw it with about 6 kids, all of them hated it, and then every single kid I talked to at school complained bitterly about how much they changed the story.

I don't buy into it, but I know many girls who do. From my perspective, it occurs more often in those who have bad relationships with their fathers.

LOL! It's true. Many of the fan boards for major TV shows have an entire section devoted
to "fan art". The fic writers are incredibly focused on their fics, & all the minutiae RE differences, type, etc. I can't keep it all straight, but they usually involve characters being injured & faced with strange situations. They are like soaps, is what it seems like to me.

It usually takes a little moments between two characters & insinuates there is a bromance OR a female relationship of that nature. For example, NCIS focuses on Gibbs/Tony, & House on House/Wilson. My understanding is that they try to keep from insisting on full-blown romance, so it's all about the little smiles, magic moments, etc.

My impression was that they trended towards the more erotic aspect at times. Though I've never read them, since slash fiction does seem to be very much a female driven fanfiction with the story being between two guys.

To understand how to relieve an earache it helps if you understand what is happening in the tissues when they become inflamed. Inflammation occurs whenever there is some kind of irritation or damage to tissues, which may or may not involve infection. When inflammation sets in, it causes swelling, redness, heat and pain.
Typically, what happens with an earache is that something causes the eustachian tube to become inflamed. The eustachian tube runs from the inner ear into the back of the throat. This allows the airpressure to equalize on both sides of the eardrum. You've probably experienced your ears "popping" when there was a sudden change in air pressure. That "pop" was air traveling through the eustachian tubes to normalize the air pressure. These tubes also allow fluid to drain from the inner ear into the throat.
When the eustachian tube becomes inflamed it swells, just like any other tissue in the body. This swelling causes the eustachian tube to close, which prevents normalization of pressure on both sides of the eardrum. The inner ear, ear canal and eardrum may also become inflamed and swollen, creating more pressure, which intensifies the pain. Just as with any other type of inflammation, the key to rapidly resolving an earache is to get the lymphatic system to drain the excess fluid away from the tissues so the swelling will diminish and the cells will stop sending pain signals to the brain.
This can be achieved by using two simple therapies. First, you can use some type of natural remedy that reduces inflammation and swelling, while promoting lymphatic flow, either as eardrops or as a compress over the ear. Second, you can do lymphatic drainage massage to reduce the swelling. Once you have reduced the swelling and "cooled down" the inflammation, the pain will subside and the irritated tissues will start to heal.

M80..
Here are a couple of the herbal remedies I have found most effective for earaches. You probably have at least one of these remedies in your home right now.
Garlic is very effective for relieving earaches and can be employed in a number of ways. Garlic oil (which is simply garlic infused into olive oil) can be warmed and used in the ear as ear drops. Even better is a combination of garlic with mullein flowers and/or St. John's wort flowers. The garlic oil can also be rubbed around the ear itself and used along the side of the neck for the lymphatic drainage massage.
Garlic contains powerful aromatic compounds that have an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory action. But you knew that. My own experience, and that of many of my friends, suggests that garlic is actually quicker and more powerful at fighting ear infections than pharmaceutical antibiotics. The antiseptic compounds will be absorbed through the skin and the eardrum into the inner ear and surrounding tissues, fighting infection and reducing inflammation at the same time.
Another way to use garlic is to take a clove of fresh garlic and cut a piece to the size that will fit comfortably in the outer ear. Do not put the garlic clove into the ear canal; you only want it to rest on the outer ear (kind of like an old-fashioned hearing aid). The raw garlic may cause a burning sensation, which can be lessened by coating the side that will come in contact with the ear with olive oil. This may not be the most socially acceptable way to fight an ear infection, however this technique is very effective.
One of the remedies I've found that usually relieves earache pain very rapidly is onions. As with the garlic, there are a number of ways the onion can be used. Start by steaming or baking an onion with the skin on until it is soft. Keeping the skin on helps to hold the onion juices inside. Crush some of the cooked onion in a bowl to press out some of the juice of the onion. (If necessary, add a small amount of water to extract some of the juice.) Using an eyedropper, place some of the warm juice in the ear. Usually, this relieves the pain in a matter of minutes.
Win-Win.
An alternative method is to cut the cooked onion in half and place the cut surface against the outside of the ear and hold it there for 5-20 minutes. This has also proven highly effective in easing the pain. Make certain the onion has cooled enough that it is warm, but not hot enough to burn the skin.
I have heard of some who have used raw onion juice, but I find this burns even more than the raw garlic. My suggestion, if you want to use raw onion, would be to dilute the juice with a little olive oil or glycerin before putting any in the ear.
A midwife friend taught me this one. If you don't have onions or garlic handy, then you probably have some cinnamon in your spice cabinet. Sprinkle a little cinnamon into some olive oil (or another vegetable oil if you don't have any olive oil, but olive oil is best). Heat the oil over the stove at a low temperature. My midwife friend simply puts the olive oil and cinnamon in a tablespoon, holds it with a hot pad and heats the spoon over the stove. When the oil is hot, remove it from the stove and let it cool to body temperature. Strain it through a fine cloth and use the oil as ear drops.
A final earache remedy I've found very helpful is colloidal silver. If you can obtain it, a 500 parts per million colloidal silver is best. If not, look for a brand that is at least 100 parts per million. Colloidal silver can be warmed and dropped directly in the ear, but it is even more effective mixed with some essential oils. Lavender, cajeput, tea tree and thyme are all very effective for earaches. Use 1 drop of essential oils per 10-20 drops of colloidal silver. Essential oils can also be diluted in olive oil (when colloidal silver isn't available) for a similar effect. Like the garlic and onions, these mixtures will fight infection and reduce inflammation.
While this isn't a remedy you're likely to have lying around the house, it is a remedy I recommend for your herbal home medicine chest. You can thank my kids and Teh Mrs. for the above

I'll try that, then. Sounds much better than steroid shots, or some of the other cure-alls.
Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at June 29, 2010 11:06 PM (Yq+qN)
I'd say an analgesic to take the edge off the discomfort, and working your jaw, chewing motions, fellatio/sucking a Mickey D's milk shake* to work the tissues around and relieve the pressure differential between inner/outer ear.
( *Don't laugh, both have caused/cured ear discomfort in The Ol' Lady... )
Posted by: FORGER - Racist Czar at June 29, 2010 11:08 PM (tGtLi)
After a few minutes of massaging the ear, begin using a "milking" technique to increase lymphatic drainage in the neck and throat. Place your finger in the indentation just under the ear and behind the jawbone. Gently stroke the neck downward from this point. Gently massage the lymph nodes in the throat area, too. You'll know what they are because you'll feel hardened, lumpy areas in the neck and throat. These movements will dramatically increase the flow of lymph moving away from the ear.
If the first round of this procedure doesn't completely relieve the pain, be patient. Just keep repeating the same process once every hour or so.

God went to the Arabs and said,
'I have Commandments for you that will make your lives better.'
The Arabs asked, 'What are Commandments?'
And the Lord said, 'They are rules for living.'
'Can you give us an example?'
'Thou shall not kill.'
'Not kill? We're not interested..'
So He went to the Blacks and said, 'I have Commandments.'
The Blacks wanted an example, and the Lord said,
'Honor thy Father and Mother.'
'Father? We don't know who our fathers are.
We're not interested.'
Then He went to the Mexicans and said,
'I have Commandments.'
The Mexicans also wanted an example, and the Lord said 'Thou shall not steal.'
'Not steal? We're not interested.'
Then He went to the French and said, 'I have Commandments.'
The French too wanted an example and the Lord said, 'Thou shall not commit adultery.'
'Sacre blue!!! Not commit adultery? We're not interested.'
Finally, He went to the Jews and said, 'I have Commandments.'
'Commandments?' They said, 'How much are they?'
'They're free.'
'I'll take 10.'
