Anyone who wants to make a serious run is going to have to start laying the groundwork within the next few months.

You are quite right.  However, we don't have to choose for quite a while. This gives us time to examine and vet each candidate, and make sure that any skeletons are handled and exposed if necessary.

We also need to think things through.  There seems to be some fear of a party split if the convention goes through more than one vote.  Maybe, but the flip side of that is that we got McCain: a good man, but not someone who wanted to win.

There is also some value in figuring out which major candidates have peaked and cannot get additional support.  Huckabee seems an example; he had lots of support of the southern religious types, but I think by March 2008 we knew he did not appeal to most of the rest of America, and it was because of religion, religiousness, something along those lines.  Unfortuinately, he pushed a couple of other candidates out of the running.  If this happens again, we will lose to Obama.

We have time now to prevent this.

IÂ’m afraid IÂ’m going to have to side with Jane DÂ’oh, much as I love Sarah Palin, and want to be her when I grow up, sometimes her voice gets to me too. It seems like it is getting worse too, I donÂ’t get that. For example, during the Vice Presidential debate I thought it was just right, but now itÂ’s like sheÂ’s deepened her twang or something. But I still love her and wish I could be just like her.

Unlike anybody else at the table, Romney has a unique combination of attrributes:

1) he's a full-time politician

2) he's a grownup

3) he's a serious person

Although we can argue over his conservative bona fides, these two qualities alone put him at the front of the list of Potential Next Presidents.  Every other possable at this point falls short on one or more of these three qualities.

Never quite understood why he's never really said "hey, its Massachusetts."  He's a pragmatist, and I think he realizes that more conservatism can be pursued at the federal level than in that state.  I would add a #4: he really f'n knows business.  Which is why I was a, albeit reluctant, supporter of his for 2008.

Figured Petraeus was stuck having to be a military officer parroting his commander-in-chief.  So do we really know much of anything about him then, beyond that he's smart and innovative when it comes to military doctrine?  As for the Israel thing... it's not so much that Israel and the Jews are our problem over there, but the ME is quite bigoted against them, so yeah it does become a major stumbling block when it comes to our relations with Islamic countries.  At least, that's how I interpreted his statement.

Saw Ron Paul yesterday on "(Is) Larry King (A)Live?" . Jesse Ventura was hosting. Stephanie Miller also guested. Can't figure out if Ventura is acting crazy for attention or if he has gone completely 'round the bend. He's a live comic strip character. Said he loves Ron Paul, and that about says it all for me. Paul was talking about a new coalition of libertarins, fiscal conservatives and progressives. In his words, "people who love liberty".

Since when does a "progressive" love liberty? As far as I can tell, they'll use force of law to "guarantee" equal outcomes, and have a deep emnity for economic liberty.

Ventura, Paul and Miller. Quite a trio. Had to double up on my Clozapine and Jack Daniels cocktail after just 15 minutes. Finally, came to my senses and plugged in "A Night At the Races".

Ya know I donÂ’t think Sarah Palin needs to sound like the Queen of England, I just think she needs to clean up her voice a bit. Other famous people do it; it isnÂ’t a stretch by any means. And sheÂ’s paid a lot for a Fox show and her speaking engagements because of who she is, it has nothing to do with her voice.

If people like me, who love her to death (I own a photograph of her signed personally to me) sometimes find it grating, then I can just imagine that it is one more thing for people who hate her to point to as something negative.

Romney's biggest problem is going to be a believable explanation for the failed Romney Care system in Massachusetts.

Yes, he had a liberal legislature in a predominately liberal voting state, but how do you explain away the failure?  Massachusetts will be looking for Federal money very soon, and this will be passed as RomneyÂ’s failure to properly manage the issue.

With Congress passing Obamacare, it will only accentuate the Massachusetts failure.  Mitt is gonna be swimming upstream on this issue.

the more I think about the poll the more I think it helps Palin and Newt the most.  With the subpar showing of the Huckster  he chance of entering the race is about 2%.  If Huck does not enter the race, Palin has the best shot at winning IW and SC.   Mitt  and Newt will most likely battle for the NH vote  and that would leave FL  a state that Mitt couldn't win against McCain.  If Palin can win FL and go into super tuesday 3-1  with the wind at her back  she stands a great chance of being the nominee.  Mitt will be left at the wayside. 

If Palin wins IW, Sc and FL all they "she is unelectable" talk falls by the side of the road.  

newt was helped by getting some needed O2 into his campaign.  He will now make some efforts to actually build a campaign up.  he may even become the anti-palin vote of the elites instead of Mitt.  If that happens Mitt is finished.  the only thing Mitt has going for him at this point is he isn't Palin.  If some other darkhorse comes out of the field to be the anti-palin   then once again Mitt is done. 

Ron Paul is finished.  he should just go away.

Ron Paul: Obama no socialist

President Obama is not a socialist, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) told conservatives gathered at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference today.

"The question has been raised about whether or not our president is a socialist," Paul said, according to Talking Points Memo. "I am sure there are some people here who believe it," Paul said. "But in the technical sense, in the economic definition of a what a socialist is, no he's not a socialist."

Paul went on to call Obama a "corporatist" instead:

"He's a corporatist," Paul continued. "And unfortunately we have corporatists inside the Republican Party and that means you take care of corporations and corporations take over and run the country."

Actually the correct term is “mercantilism” but he isnÂ’t one of those either. While true that Obama is not a socialist it is not because he is in bed with corporations.  What he is doing with these corporations is taking them over.  In short, he is a communist.

Look at his appointees. Half are self-avowed communists and the other half are stealth communists. He himself during the campaign advocated redistribution of wealth and faulted the Constitution for not doing that. He might as well have said I am a communists and I will do redistribution in spite of the Constitution which I swore to defend and protect.

But hell, whatÂ’s one more lie on top of all the rest.

We need to run a governor at the top of the ticket.   Executive experience is going to play big in 2012.  

Mitch Daniels is very impressive, and unlike Romney can't be tagged (fairly or not, it's gonna happen) as a flip-flopper.    He has low name recognition right now, but that can change quickly.

My dream VP candidate is Liz Cheney, but it might be too soon politically to put another Cheney on the ticket.   No biggie -- Ryan, Cantor or Bachmann would be fine for veep.

Some of Paul's ideas concerning domestic policy are intriguing and are worth discussing-- the problem is all the very bad stuff that comes in the package...and the fact that for all his talk, he has really done nothing to advance any of the stuff he goes on about (he's done more with his diatribes for the stupid Truther and anti-war movement on the public stage than he has for any sort of small government/fiscal sanity policy imho -- that does not endear him to me; neither does the bigotry).

Don't you think a Romney/Liz Cheney ticket would be great?  They could appoint Sarah as Sec of the Dept of the Interior (?) (over drilling, etc.) and give her the gravitas that everyone wants her to have. Romney knows business, Liz doesn't take dirt from anyone and can really dish it out too. I like Ryan, if he was the one that gave obama fits at that tv thingey. Anyone of the 4 could run rings around the "O" and vp and look at how handsome any one of them are.
