The Senate and the House Celebrate Easter
— Jack M.

Senate: Hey little bro.

House: Hi, big bro!

Senate: Whatcha working on?

House: A letter to the easter bunny.

Senate: Oh yeah? What are you asking him for?

House: A chocolate bunny.

Senate: Anything else?

House: Some of those yummy Cadbury eggs.

Senate: Love those. That it?

House: I also want him to write me back with a letter promising he wont spend any chocolate coins on killing those cute baby chicks that sometimes end up in people's baskets. Wanna sign it with me?

Senate: Ummmmm....

House: I just love those little chicks...you know how cute they are when they go "peep, peep, peep"?

Senate: Dude. The easter bunny isn't real. How can you not know this? You are about to turn 221 years old!

I have a technical question. Can't the Senate Republican filibuster the vote on the reconciliation package?  At the very least can't they push it back after the weekend, so the congressmen(people?) have to go home to their districts and get an earful?

I was promised that Scott Brown would answer all our questions, but that doesn't appear to be accurate.

There is no filibuster on reconciliation, which is why they're going that route.  All it requires is a 51 simple majority to pass.  Filibuster requires a cloture of 60 votes to end debate.

9 Ben, No. Reconciliation avoids the filibuster, as it only needs 51 votes to pass and has a defined number of hours for debate. (It takes 60 votes to "invoke cloture" or end debate under general rules). Certain aspects of the reconciliation bill will be subject to a 60 vote point of order...but even if everything objected to gets struck, whatever is left only requires 51 votes (or 50 + Biden) to pass.

15 Nah, Ben, because Brown will have an impact on other stuff. The problem is that the Senate finished everything related to the underlying health care bill prior to Brown's election. That's why Pelosi had to pass the Senate bill, as anything "new" would have to be passed by the senate agin in a post-Brown atmosphere, where the GOP could sustain a filibuster.

From Whorlitico:

After hearing arguments on both sides, Frumin said that Democratic plans to push back an excise tax on so-called Cadillac insurance plans until 2018 was within the purview of budget rules allowable under the filibuster-proof reconciliation process. The GOP had argued it was beyond the scope of the five-year budgetary window allowed under the rules, and it was a violation of the so-called Byrd rule because of its changes to the Social Security law.

Republicans were hoping that if Frumin had ruled that the tax plan was out of order, it would have derailed the entire reconciliation measure.

Now Republicans said there are a series of other challenges they plan to levy against the bill in the coming days. “Next up, we’ll begin the process of flagging the dozens of drafting errors Republicans have discovered in the reconciliation package that we believe violate the Byrd rule,” a senior GOP aide said.

He's not very talkative, is he?  I think he's stuck between the destruction of the Constitution and RomneyCare.  People got on Romney's case, but I see no problem with him arguing from the state level (where I don't like RomneyCare, but have no legal objections to it - people can move to another state) and saying how that's different from the federal level.  That is, after all, the major problem with this whole health scare; it's a state responsibility, and states can do any nutty things they want.  That's the issue.

But, the fact is that RomneyCare sucks, which is what is stopping Brown, I think.  He ought to talk to Romney, who is making a decent argument against the national health scare and just go lightly on the RomneyCare.  He can leave that to the Treasurer guy who's warning that the US would be bankrupt in 4 years.  I know that sounds drastic, but KikiCare in Hawaii had to be stopped within 8 or 9 months, I think, and that was just supposed to be free health care to poor kids, or something like that.  They blew through their budget so quickly that they had to shut the whole program down.

Also, why aren't the Tea-Party groups organized by county or by congressional district?  That would be great!  If you live in xxxx your local Tea-Group is yyyy.

72 "Wexler has endorsed Ted Deutch, a flaming leftist, but there is a Republican challenger Ed Lynch.  I expect Lynch will probably lose, but the margin of the loss could be very telling."

Too bad he probably will lose, Republican electoral defeats any time between now and November will be portrayed as the people turning away from the racist reactionaries and will get tons of exposure. While any Republican victories will be reported as more or less just the facts ma'am the way the beatings we gave them in Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey largely were. The fact that Republicans swept statewide races in Pennsylvania, an amazing feat, was almost unreported as far as I could tell. And of course everyone saw the bending-over-backwards to say that it had nothing to do with the asshole in the Oval Office.

I only realized how much I detested that man when I watched his loathsome victory speech with Biden practically panting beside him. You could tell what was running on repeat through his mind the whole way through: "fuck you, America. I won."

91 What the hell is this with the senior staff who wrote this shit sandwich exempting themselves from it?

Hrm, I thought we had a Constitutional amendment somewhere about equal treatment under the law.

At least, that's what they tell me when I wonder why there's more women's college sports teams than men's college sports teams.

92 K, it's too early in the day to have worked up a fury, but there I am.  The arguments I've been having with libs generally include "but what about families that can't afford health care for their children?" I think we've got to counter the impression that we don't give a flying frack about other people.  I would guess that most of us who can afford it give money to charity.  Wouldn't be surprised if some of us tithe.  We've got to make the argument that we're not opposed to poor people having health care, but to the government funding of it.  And the coercion that is a key part of this bill.  We have no trouble with VOLUNTARY charity.  This "Party of No" stuff is driving me crazy.  The only thing we say NO to is bigger government.

93 "but what about families that can't afford health care for their children?"

Covered by existing state and federal programs like S-CHIP.

94 Oh, and ask them how much money they've given this year to the Shriners, or the local children's hospital, or any of the assorted pediatric cancer funds.

Not a fucking dime, usually.

They don't want to help people, they want to feel good about forcing you to help people.

95 Technical question on the IRS enforcement:  Are people who don't file returns exempt from all this BS?  Was at a place of business yesterday talking about Obamacare yesterday and the employees working there were pleased to hear about the IRS enforcement provisions.  They are all paid cash, none of it is reported, none of them file returns.

96 You forgot the last line:

House: Shhh!  I know!  But mom and dad are into it so I have to pretend I am, too.  Otherwise, no free candy.

It's vastly more entertaining, watching you ladytypes get all hot 'n sweaty glowing, running around, back and forth, in lycra shorts, the errant wisp of hair across your fac...

...*cough*...was I thinking out loud again?
