The Stench of Socialized Medicine [krak]
— Open Blogger

Yes, it's anecdotal.

And yes, it's a little disingenuous to predict that ObamaCare would get this bad, in no small part because we still don't know just what is in the bill as the House and Senate play the "I promise I won't pop in your mouth" charade with each other.

But dude. 8 hours?

A HOSPITAL patient told yesterday of her “eight hours of horror” after the bodies of three dead people were left in their beds – with one not taken out until the ward was full of visitors.

10 They keep trying to sell this crap based on anecdotes.

So, we might as well offer some counter-anecdotes to level the field, as long as we don't pretend like they do that any of these anecdotes prove anything.

28 I like true little stories about real people instead.

Well, I heard LauraW once pulled a train outside New Delhi.

No, that's not a euphemism. They made a harness they could strap to her hump and encouraged her to tug a broke down train engine 2 miles by dangling an unfrosted chocolate pop-tart in front of her.

Incredible craftsmen those clever little brown people.

Then she let the whole village take turns doinking her.

(Sorry. Missed the last flame war and I've been a bit pent up.)

32 Heh.  As a nurse who worked on a floor (my first job after college), we had some private and semi private (2 bed) rooms.  If a person died, we would move the other patient to another room if we couldn't move the body to the morgue right away.  Then we would close the door and turn up the a/c.  I wonder if there wasn't another bed to move this patient to (probably the case, since I'm sure there are issues with overcrowding in British hospitals).   Americans love their private rooms in the hospital.  Looks like that's not something you can get in the UK.  I wonder how many patients they pack into one room.  I'm betting it's more than 2.  The other thing, we were always assessing and reassessing on our patients (I'm sure the staffing ratio in the UK is abysmal and that they have non-licensed personnel doing more actual nursing duties).  You often had an idea if someone was "going to go" (primary care nursing, we knew our patients and we could tell when things weren't going well).  Yes, we did have those sudden, unexpected codes, but I would have to say the majority of people who died deteriorated over a period of time (so you could often start notifying the physician, family, etc.)  Once we have "health care reform", I don't know why any nurse would want to work on a floor--I only lasted less than a year on a medical floor, and then I fled to the Operating Room.

Heh to the reference to Keith Overbite.

I've been reading a book written by a Catholic priest called Evidence of Satan in the Modern World. Made me wonder if Keith is possessed by demons. Then I stumbled over one of the symptoms of demonic possession: the presence of an alien intelligence in the possessed individual. Since Keith shows absolutely no signs of intelligence, alien or otherwise, I think it's safe to say he's clear of demonic influence.

Can't be fired staff.     The other scary thing, a lot of the younger, newer nurses think they know everything (you can't tell them anything) and they are very entitled.  They think there are certain tasks that are "beneath them".  So basically if we get "health care reform", you're going to have more sick people, increasingly sicker people (inpatient populations in hospitals are horribly sick--for various reasons--ie. better technology saving people that wouldn't have been saved before, hospitals requiring people to be more ill to stay, etc.) and horrible working conditions, and a bunch of entitled nurses who don't want to work that hard.  Between that and the declining quality of our current residents, we are headed for pure ugliness.    Seriously, people, stay healthy!

The other thing this emphasizes is the endemic, corrosive, all-consuming nihilism in these socialist countries - where were the dead patients' families when this was happening?

Reminds me of that heat wave a few years ago when the French yuppies couldn't be bothered to return home from their vacations, and  French Grannies & Grandpas died by the hundreds [thousands?] in their air-condition-less apartments.

102 Business will be picking up under ObamaCare, Sam!  Prepare the bodies for examination and contact Dr. Astin and Lieutenant Monahan!  Tell them I will have to take a rain check on our weekly card game at "Danny's" until ObamaCare is repealed by the GOP and the bodies stop piling up!

Eight hours of horror, my ass.  Total control of the TV remote, no annoying commentary from the roommates, extra meals dropped off.....

Fuckin' Heaven.

104 Bad as as UKcare is. Where are the families? No one came and made a stink on why their dead relitive is left with out proper respect and taken out of sight.   The next story will be that there are thousands of unclaimed bodies that the famly just gave to the state when they were alive and did not care if and when they died they are now property of the state health care.

You know, you laugh, but when I was in the hospital only my own infirmity kept me from smothering the other occupants of the room so I could get some fucking sleep.

Yes, it is most likely a union thing.

There are STRICT union rules about who can do this job and who can do that job.  And it would not surprise me that there is someone whose specific job description is to cart away the dead ("Bring out your dead!"), such that NO ONE ELSE is allowed to do it.

To be sure, they have all sorts of union rules about who can carry caskets at funerals and that sort of thing.

110  Like I said on on Dan Rielh's latest posts on this: We need a soundtrack for this debate...

Sick Puppies - "You're going down."
Within Temptation - "Stand My Ground."
Blue Oyster Cult - "Don't Fear the Reaper"
Blue Oyster Cult - "Veteran of the Psychic Wars."
The Cruxshadows - "Winterborn."
The Cruxshadows - "The Eye of the Storm."
Dragon Force - "Through the Fire and Flames."
Idina Menzel - "A Hero Comes Home."
Globus - "Europa."
Heather Alexander - "March of Cambreadth."

We can use those and bring in Hans Zimmer for the dramatic build up between scenes.

111 8 "Can you imagine what kind of care one will get with minimum wage help running the insane asylum called Obama Care!"

Well, that's the care you get today in America's Death Prisons...er...nursing homes. Overworked, under-educated, under-trained - often stoned - teenagers providing most of the direct patient care, who spend more time arguing over who's turn it is to do what than actually taking care of any patients.

So, yeah. I can imagine it...

As for nationalized health care, compare the VA Health system, especially the difference between Walter Reed - with problems of its own - to a local VA health clinic in a flyover state...also, see budget for same, year over year, for the last one hundred years, give or take bit..

112 Dentures are cheap, there's probably a very brisk black market business in gloming hearing aids.  Some of those damn things are in the over $5,000 range.

I recently got partials on the upper and lower. With all the work they had to do the total came out over 5K.  Neither one of these things are cheap.

113 "hospital ward"

I dont know about you guys, but where I am from, we dont HAVE "hospital wards". We have hospital rooms, where a maximum of two patients share a room. Most of the time, you get a room to yourself. Wards are another cancer of countries with socialist medicine, cramming many people in the same large public room because of the shortage of doctors, nurses and other staff.

I dont know about you guys, but where I am from, we dont HAVE "hospital wards".

When I grew up we had wards, semi-private, and private rooms.  The only people who stayed in the private rooms were the rich.  This was before insurance.

If you had a communicable disease you stayed at home and the Dr. came by to see you.

This is how insurance has changed the buisness. All rooms are private now, at least as far as I have seen.

Latest on Healthscam over at Fox:

Health Care Bill 'Still a Jump Ball,' White House Official Says

The prospects for Democratic victory on health care reform, the president's signature domestic initiative, have improved, but "it's still a jump ball," a top White House official intimately involved in the ongoing health care negotiations with House and Senate Democrats told Fox News late Friday.

This is an AP article edited by Major Garret. Since it is based on verbiage from Adm offficials and Nancy Botox it means she still doesn't have the votes.

No mention of the "pass by decree" scam but it does mention the student loan nationalization they want to fold into it Monday. So I guess they are still planning on a "reconciliation" of a bill that have never been passed that they will rule has passed.

Posted by: Vic at March 13, 2010 01:45 AM (QrA9E)

116

On the student loan nationalization they had this to say:

With Democrats deciding to incorporate changes in student aid into the bill, Republicans suddenly had a new reason to oppose legislation they have long sought to scuttle.

Yeah, no bias there.  Rains is right, Fox is a PR wing for the Republicans hahahahaha.

BTW, the last student loan thing they did they passed via reconcilliation as well. So far that is the ONLY non-budget releated thing that has been passed using reconcilliation. In that bill the Feds became a direct compeditor in making loans to students instead of just guaranteeing loans.

I guess that didn't have the results they wanted because students still went to private companies who had fewer restrictions on how they could get the loans.

In this new bill they are just shutting down the private companies and all tudent loans will be via the government. If I not mistaken, that is blatantly unconsituional.

But hell, the original program was also unconsitutional and nobody bitched so there you are. Every time you give these assholes and inch they take a mile.

117 Dude, it'll be much worse in the U.S.  The European Union and Canada has soaked up the supply of educated third world nurses and physicians willing to work for socialist wages.

In the US, we'll see undocumented workers making decisions about whether your hospital room, sheets, and surgical theater have been properly sterilized.

Sure thing, buddy.  Of course, supporters of the current healthcare plan being forced on the American people by Democrats regularly cite the supposed high-quality care in these same foreign countries with socialized medicine as support for their plan.  As expected, this invites those of us opposed to their plan to analyze the healthcare system in those countries and expose the problems those countries have despite their citizens giving up a lot of individual liberty and freedom to implement the system.  Also, the Democrats want to get to single-payer in this country eventually so pointing out the problems with single-payer systems or examples of socialized medicine across the globe is necessary to do now in order to try to head it off.  But I guess it's easier being intellectually dishonest than acknowledging all this, right?

121 The UK story of a young man dying of thirst in hospital is a much better example. And YES, it will happen here --nursing homes prove it.
