— Russ from Winterset Crap. I missed tonight's episode due to an Iowa State basketball game and my niece's 3rd birthday party. Consider this to be a zombie "open thread" and discuss amongst yourselves.
First suggested topic? "Fences: Would they have helped?"

The series isn't progressing well.
It's already so boring that I don't even care that the libtard writers have been following the standard issue "whites = evil; blacks & mexicans = good" bullshit.
Yawn.

I agree the show is losing my interest bigtime...too much drama and social commentary and not enough clever/destructive actions against the zombie horde. Some gratuitous fish in a barrel turkey shoots with lots of ammunition expended would at least be entertaining.
There are only 5 episodes for this season so it will be over soon.

Okay...glad that Amy's dead because she was a tedious bratty whiner. I thought I saw a fence with string and cans around it at some point...or was that another show?
That whole stand-off thing could have been epic and it ended up being totally lame.
Could it possibly be that Jim was having some kind of vision? That whatever is zombie-ing the undead is having an affect on his brain, too? That could be kind of convenient.
How many being were killed by the zombies at the end. Tedious bratty whiner, abusive husband...the hispanic guy who built the fire pit?

Frank Darabont.. The only substantive things he has done has been riding Steven King's coattails with his movies.
His one other movie, The Majestic, was about the McCarthy trials and the one screen writer on trial stands up against the senator in the end,..
Even The Shawshank Redemption, the part where he departs from the story is really the weakest part of the movie.. About the librarian who gets paroled and then hangs himself.

I'm hoping that they eventually come on to a group that does these sorts of things. But really a successful zombi-apocalypse community is going to be less interesting.
I don't think there's been anything to suggest military background in this group and the most training seems to be the cop and the pizza delivery boy that obviously spent a lot of time playing video games.
If there were military guys in the group I think I'd be screaming along with you, but not every group is going to be clued in on good survival methods.

1. Good call by the director casting that Hispanic guy who plays a Hispanic gangbanger in pretty much every movie or show ever. Really made the fake Latino gang seem like a gang, until we learn their the worlds stupidest careworkers.
2. I'm pretty sure the absolute worst place to live during a Zombie apocalypse is a nursing home, for obvious reasons.
3. Starting to question the logic of camping out next to a major city filled with the undead. Why even go into Atlanta for supplies, anyway. Surely they can raid a small town somewhere and get just as many supplies.
4. Why did Super Cop, Asian Sidekick, B.Saint, and Token Black Dude run all the way back? World's over idiots, steal another car.
5. Wish this was on HBO, they make it nothing but Zombie headshots for 40 minutes, and cut the 35 min of drama.
6. I'm really beginning to wonder why Half-way-competent-racist-crossbow-guy is even shacking up with these people. They're all idiots, who are obviously going to get him killed. I'd rather watch him wonder the South killing random Zombies than watch these idiots slowly get themselves eaten cause they can't be bothered to fortify their position after a month.

I guess the immediate reason the group was staying near Atlanta was that they were waiting for the rescue team to come back. The larger reason, I think, was that they were looking for other survivors or some kind of rescue. Remember their monitoring the CB in ep. 1.

If it doesn't happen by epi 3 of 5, I can't I imagine it will ever happen.
If so. It is just hopeless.
All of these "characters" are in fact "red-shirts" destined to be gnawed on by super gross zombies, from the get-go.

Not my favorite episode. And OF COURSE the campsite was attacked during the fish fry. While a zombie apocalypse is of course implausible to begin with, what is MORE implausible is a bunch of people camping in the open with no fence/ditch/mines, no sentries and having a big old fish fry DURING a zombie apocalypse. Seriously, you'd think that the 1% of humanity that was left would put a little more thought into self-preservation than this group does. Hell, even police officer Shane gets a total FAIL.
Jim digging graves in some sort of altered state was interesting though. Some sort of vision of the future in his dreams?
I'm liking Daryl more and more each episode. Something of a hothead, but in a good way. His brother might be totally crazy, but I don't think he is.
Well at least this incident should get them on the road to have more adventures than running in and out of Atlanta.

Two hours into this post, and we've got 41 comments. I rest my case. Wake me when it's over.
Had to wait until well into Monday morning just to get to 50 posts.
Face it - if this series had good, conservative, ballsy screenwriters, instead of politically-correct, libtard, panty-waist, HUAC blacklisters, then we'd be looking at 500 to 750 comments - easily. [Maybe even 1250 to 1500.]
And so we witness yet another great idea being ruined by the nihilism of political correctness.

I saw nothing that made me want to watch the rest of it...seems to be sort of a daytime soap opera with lots of rotting corpses. Well, except the acting on most daytime soap operas is better.
There may be a great zombie TV series to be made, but this turkey ain't it.
Note to folks doing scripts: if ALL your main characters are morons (bad morons, not AoS morons, of course), it's really hard to give a crap if they get eaten by zombies or not...honestly, some of the rotting corpses seemed to have higher IQ's.
Posted by: davidingeorgia at November 22, 2010 05:11 AM (JHLqh)
Expect the regulars to start droping like flies, 2 shows left and we still have almost all of the orignal cast...unless of course they plan to renew it for next season which is possible.
The redneck on the roof bit was predictable though. They need to have had him get eaten in a most ugly way, it was too obvious that he would get away and now become an issue. But what can you expect, even in a zombie movie the bad guy isn't the zombies, its the racist "teabagg'n" rednecks.
Oh, also noticed how the latino gang leader was actually a big hearted fellow helping out the old folks...maybe its just me, perhaps I am too cynical but the PC crap in a zombie movie is just about too much to handle.
Predictions:
One handed redneck is gunna get killed by his brother after the brother chooses the group over him.
Bad cop will go zombie on the group and be killed by the wife of the good cop.
Battered wife will get eaten, Hole digger will go down in a blaze of glory, Asian due will get eaten, surviving sister will get eaten (by her dead sister), hero and his family will live for now, Old dude with tools will live, Big black guy will live but the black woman wont (may be vise verse).
Also noticed something odd about the whole thing, the surprising lack of black people...this takes place in Atlanta, you would think there would be more black people in this show both living and dead but it seems to be rather white. There were more black zombies in MJ's Thriller video then in this whole movie so far. What kind of closet racism is that?

other things that bother me: Is there REALLY a quarry within sight distance of downtown Atlanta?
Yes, yes there is. Flying from Atlanta Hartfield airport one can easily see a quarry during ascent.
The skyline in the background looks more like a developed suburb then the actual downtown Atlanta area.

I gotta ask, How come the fish after being caught did not turn into Zombie fish?
If you were surrounded by piles of rotting human's would you want to eat fish?
A zombie stinks, would not that make it easy to spot one approaching and would not a gaggle of zombies stink so bad you would know a mile away they were coming?

One thing, among many, that bothered me about this episode is the fish fry was at night. The old guy mentioned 100 degree temperatures which means July or August timeframe. Which means sunsets about 8:00pm to 9:00pm and dark probably about 30 minutes later. They could have had their fish fry around 7:00pm in day light.

FENCES: A 900 lb quarter horse can fer shure walk down a fence 9 100 lb zombies can walk a fence down too unless it's charged.
Depends on the fence. Also the fence could have bells on it to alert of danger. Anything would have been better then being sitting ducks around a camp fire.

this time, they took a bite and moved on..

Its just the common sense violations that are irritating. Everyone should at least have a metal spike or be otherwise armed at all times by now. That blonde chick just let that zombie chomp into her arm. Same with Ed. Didn't even try to run or push back or fight or scream "Zombies!" or anything.

FENCE: Nope it's all a matter of weight and dedicated zombies LOL any fence can be breached by simply piling weight against the 90 degrees and push it over. get enough zombies together and they will squeeze through like sausages, pile up and spill over the top and I bet a zombie can dig too! I've seen 13 foot high chain link go down under a heavy tree limb falling on it.
Posted by: HEP-T at November 22, 2010 06:29 AM (AI5+o)
Against a handful of Zeds a fence would be useful. However in the event of say hundreds or thousands of zombies knocking at your door, a standard fence will do little to help in the long run.
If 10 poorly armed survivors are faced with hundreds of thousands of zombies, a fence might not work, but neither would anything else.
Posted by: Oldcat at November 22, 2010 06:30 AM (CN+Qv)
Know your exits! The best advice I can give is... DON'T... GET... BIT!
Thanks for the advice Jason. About fenses, all I can say is that if there are 1000s of zombies attacking the game's almost over and the fence won't help. If there are only a few zombies attacking then a fence is ideal. You know, mankind has been building fences and walled protected areas for defensive purposes for thousands of years, you think it be on the first order of business in the zombie apocalypse.

Of course any fence can be breached. So why the hell do people still build fences? Because its an effective means of limiting entrance into an area. It may not be able to keep out hundreds or thousands but it can keep some.

"The campers are in a food coma from the fish fry and the Zeds will walk into camp all at once. Not one at a time but organized like"
I remember that one of the zombies in the first episode looked sentient. This was when the sheriff was taking his horse into Atlanta and they passed a bus full of zombies. That might be interesting.
The first episode showed a lot of promise, but the series has been disappointing. Aside from the usual PC bullshit, the series lacks the attention to detail that the first episode displayed. It's like there were two different writers.

People have indeed been building fences for centuries. the only problem with your postulation is that they have NOT been building fences for centuries with zombies waiting to chomp on their flesh.
yeah, just animals (faster, sharper teeth) and other people (smarter, weaponmaking) wanting to kill them.
The characters already stated they were in a relatively zombie free area. Hell just get some chain and chicken wire from Lowes and wrap from tree to tree to isolate an area. Something, anything.

According to the comic, there are two types of zombies, active and passive. Active zombies shamble around looking for food, passive zombies sit and wait until something disturbs them.

Could a zombie outbreak ever really reach into the thousands anyway? At a certain point they're going to completely devour anyone brought down so new ones would be less and less likely to be created.

He could have lured them into the van and jumped through the little door that separated the door and the cargo area. then ran around to shut the back door.
I guess he could have climbed up on top of the van and opened it that way.
I'm guessing the stand off with Merle will happen in the last episode.

Just a quick question about that cop who stayed in the camp...
Let me get this straight.
If you beat your wife, he will kick the shit out of you (if he just got dissed by his fellow officer's wife).
If you start digging holes in the ground, he'll body slam you and tie you to a tree for a couple of hours.
So we know he is all about going hands on if he thinks you are out of line.
But ensuring that there is some sort of security posted during a fish fry? He won't go that far?
Making sure everyone is armed with zombie effective weapons at all times (club, tire-iron, gun, etc) is a bridge too far?
OK, I get it.

My quick hit views of the episode. Beware, THERE BE SPOILERS BELOW!!
*
*
*
*
*
*
1) As I mentioned in my previous comment, i really like Daryl. He seems to be the most competent member of the group, if hotheaded. Him and the cop make a good team.
2) Gangbanger eldercare? Right. Okay, fine, I get it. They're noble savages. Whatever. In what postapocalyptic world does it make sense to beat other survivors senseless before finding out if they're friend or foe? And then holding one of them hostage? I don't get the thought process there. I understand that people can turn into villainous little scavenging bastards in a postapocalyptic situation, and in many ways it's every man for himself. But shouldn't you at least, I don't know, observe first? Before trying to brain another survivor with a pipe?
What are the odds that Cop & Co. would be traveling back to Atlanta for those guns at EXACTLY THE SAME TIME as Gangbanger Eldercare?
And how the heck did Gangbanger Eldercare not hear all the noise Cop & Co. made just the day before when they all went squealing and screaming and car-alarm-blaring out of the city? They're all in the same general vicinity; it's not like Gangbanger Eldercare is on the other side of the city. So WTH?
3) *sigh* Okay, I like the show, but some of the foreshadowing is just... It's like a mallet right between the eyes. Case in point - Older!sister scrambling around to find wrapping paper for younger!sister's necklace, because it's younger!sister's birthday. Raise your hands everyone who sensed younger!sister's iminent role as zombie food.
*hand raised*
I'm intrigued, though, because Amy (younger!sister) is one of the only characters actually listed on the AMC homepage for the show, along with her sister. I'm almost wondering if she'll have some kind of miracle resurrection that doesn't involve her becoming a zombie. Doubtful to the extreme, but so are the odds of two completely autonomous groups of survivors converging on the exact same bag of guns at the exact same time in the middle of an enormous, deserted city populated almost exclusively by the walking dead.
4) I agree with previous commenters -- why the hell didn't Cop & Co. just steal another damn car instead of running back to camp?
5) Building on point number four, why exactly are Cop & Co's little group of survivors even hanging around? Why haven't they gone all nomad? I like to think if I had the fuel and provisions, I'd be trucking it the hell away from Atlanta and every other major metropolis, scanning the radio waves and searching for other survivors. I'd at least want to go somewhere more defensible than an exposed hillside surrounded by dense foliage that is apparently excellent at obscuring the moans and shuffling footsteps of ravenous zombie herds.
6) Why was Carl hanging around with Shane when Shane went to give Jim some more water? Didn't cop!wife Lori state categorically in last week's episode that he was supposed to stay away from her family?
7) Not crying that Ed is dead. I got a serious incesty vibe from him when he grabbed his daughter's wrist and told her to "keep your daddy company." CREEPY. So he was a wife-beater, child abuser, and potentially an incestuous pedophile. It was wonderfully satisfying to watch him get nommed.
I enjoy the human drama of the series (though I could do without the excruciating PC preachiness), but I agree: less chit chat, more Daryl-shooting-zombies-in-the-head-with-an-arrow, please.

The theory is sound, but one wonders about time frames due to the various times some zeds are created. How fast does a corpse decompose? I think we've established that normal carrion eating organisms don't eat zombie flesh. Would zombies decay normally if the organism which aid in decomposition don't work?
I wonder about this, too. In the first episode Hero!Cop encountered that crawling, decayed torso that was still dragging itself along in search of (presumably) food. And in last week's episode Daryl had to put an arrow through the decapitated zombie head because it was still "alive." Exactly how long do you have to wait for whatever eldritch force is animating these zombies to wear off? Until their brains rot away? How much of their brain is needed for them to function? And how many stupid survivors are going to be eaten before people figure this out?

That would be a big "yes" to each of your questions. Been there, done that, got the blisters and back aches to show for it.
And the security that goes along with it.
So while this is just a for fun thread about zombies, yeah, I've done all of that.

I think part of the problem with zombies decomposing is that a lot of them don't rot, they dry out. They are still shambling zombies, but getting leathery, rather than falling to pieces.

I have become a big fan of this show. It just happens that I rock at playing Call of Duty "World at War" Nazi Zombies and the new Black Ops Zombie map.
It's simple strategy folks funnel the Zombies into only ONE possible path and blow the shit out of them. You just need to leave a escape route.
As far as logic and WTF were they thinking simply look at the first episode when the main charactor gets out of the hospital bed. He's got an I.V. in him but never has to urinate or deficate. He should have been wet from pissing himself but he's dry as a bone and not packing a load in his drawers.
Aquiring guns should have been priority #1! The cop knew this. Transportation, defensible camp (tents?),fuel, food and communication are all the most basic survival needs.
I am with the others that suspect the one handed guy with bringing the zombies back to camp. Moving forward these dipshits need to hit the road. They need a fortified camp with lot's of fuel and ammo. The folks left at the end of the world are going to be ruthless and you should not trust ANYONE! Get armed up, set up a defensive perimeter and continue to fortify with more bodies and more stuff like armored vehicles and military gear i.e. night vision goggles etc.
Next year should be better after the charactors are established. Just remember in COD the zombies ALWAYS win!!!

We talked about this alot in the first thread. The general concensus among medical professionals, and people who either were hospitalized, or had fasted was that the GI tract stops pushing out solid waste fairly quickly under similar circumstances, and that his not being covered in stools was pretty plausible.
We didn't talk about the water as much, but again, once you get into a situation where your water intake is eliminated, your water waste output will decline.

I just saw this for the first time last night. Not bad. I'm wondering how far that chick went with her husbands best friend.
The thing that got me - why the hell are they not raiding every sporting goods store in the phone book? Only 1 crossbow and like 5 bolts??
Also, is it respect for now-defunct federal and state regulations that prevents them from making home-made silencers??
It doesn't seem that difficult for them. Same for gas, construction materials, etc. etc. That's like 75% of the fun of the zombie apocalypse is demand is reduced by 99.9% and you've got all those free supplies to pimp yourself out ala Mad Max.
Especially against zombies... leather armor would suffice. Why the hell don't they hit the nearest motorcycle dealer and pick up an nice thick leather riding suit and helmet? Ain't no zombie gonna bite through that... at least not unless they're gnawing for quite some time.
Biker leathers... A silenced pistol and rifle.. a katana, a crossbow, weld some railroad style plow on the front of a muffled motorcycle and you can zip around and loot till your heart's content.
I want a jeep, for basic getting around, a couple of bikes for getting around in tight places like cluttered highways or roads, a semi with a gas tank trailer, an armored truck for hauling stuff like lumber (and also to have for transporting people)...
Just go to the suburbs, break into a gas station, steal a phone book and look up your nearest refinery... your nearest Cabella's, your neareset Brink's... and don't forget your American Express.
They're siphoning gas out of cars and taking tires off... Drive the car you fools! Like you can't get more tires at NTB or Pep Boys and throw them in the trunk...
Posted by: Entropy at November 22, 2010 11:44 AM (IsLT6)
The other thing that gets me is if they bite you, they infect you...
Yet no one smacking them in the head with a shovel sees fit to wear goggles or a mask as they spatter rotting brain bits around? What if that dude's amygdala gets in your eye.
Also... does that dude sanitize those bolts with denatured alchohol and holding them in fire before he shoots food with them again? I'm not sure I want to eat anything he kills.
Posted by: Entropy at November 22, 2010 11:50 AM (IsLT6)
First, you can't defend the camp by simply profiling zombies, most of whom are peaceful. Only a minority want to eat your brains. It's wrong to generalize the actions of a radical minority of zombies out to the moderate majority.
The best thing to do is set up a security checkpoint outside the camp and run everyone through it, living and dead, to be fair. In lieu of full body scanners, security personnel should rely on a thorough pat down of everyone, taking particular care to explain to the zombies what they are doing as they examine their genital areas, with special sensitivity to the cognitive handicaps suffered by those of the zombie persuasion. If zombies have no weapons, invite them in. And it wouldn't hurt to lose all that bigoted language: walkers, geeks, zeds, the undead. It's exclusionary and hurtful.
"Why do they hate us," should be the question the living should ask, rather than assuming a default posture of hostility. The fact is that America has never been welcoming to zombies and bears a long, ugly history of oppression that legitimizes the zombie struggle and legitimizes it. The zombie apocalypse was made in America, my friends, with America's zombies coming home to roost.
Look in the mirror and ask yourself if you've done right by the zombies. Have you ever said hello to one in the street and enquired about their well-being? Have you ever invited one home for dinner? Or are you the typical chauvinist American bourgeois who considers zombies as somehow inferior, dirty, lacking in brains and initiative to change their station in life?
The only way we will achieve social justice on this issue is through legislation, specifically my new ZombieCare bill now being written in Congress that will enact important protections for zombies that will incorporate them into the American mainstream. Yes, we can!

Also, building a fence becomes easier if you can steal a backhoe and a cement truck and a MIG welder.
Hell if I could steal free materials I'd be building one right now, just for kicks. When the alternative "not building one at all, ever" you don't have to rush.
And what else you gonna do all day with no TV when your not out looting or drinking looted booze and hitting on the only 3 remaining eligible chicks on the planet so far as you can be certain?
Who, I might add, will probably like your giant and symbolically phallic fence.
Posted by: Entropy at November 22, 2010 12:03 PM (IsLT6)
The zombies in the "The Walking Dead" universe are attracted to sound and smell. Firing up a backhoe and a cement truck will bring hundreds. Granted you are in a backhoe and could easily eliminate huge swaths of Zeds but I'm not sure what blood does to the cement mixture you have.
Your best bet in the ZA (that's Zombie Apocalypse for you Morons) is to screw the fence, find a 3rd floor warehouse, board it up and lie low for a few weeks. If they don't know you're there... no fence is required.
Posted by: Jason at November 22, 2010 12:25 PM (7RoxY)
Barring that, there are still so many other things they could have done to give the camp a fighting chance.
So far, it seems really difficult to get killed by a zombie. Even chaining someone to a roof with starving zombies nearby isn't enough. The door was still chained, and there's no reason to believe any zombies were able to get through it. So really, minimal protection is all you need to survive here, and they didn't even bother with that. Cans are no protection. It's a joke that they even thought they were.
Also, why is Daryl the only one with a crossbow? They're not they difficult to make (I made a few when I was 11 for a class project - and this was before easy access to the Internet), but even if they're too difficult for our main characters, why not at least make a bow and arrow? These people just do not have survival instincts. If people like these are still alive, then how in the world did they get so many zombies?
I still like the show, but it's not at all what it could be.

It's a zombie apocalypse man, have some vision.
You look up "excavation equipment rentals" in the yellow pages and jack the shit!
There's nothing in a zombie apocalypse that cannot be solved with the proper application of stealing, including those things which require the proper application of stolen explosives.
I even know where a National Guard Armory is. Close, too. I don't know what the hell they actually keep in there or if there's guns or a tank or what. But, in the event of zombipocalyspe I'd love to bust into the place and find out - assuming the Guard doesn't mobilize and jack it all first before getting eaten.... bastards..
That's the only stuff that's difficult to loot, low in supply and high in demand in a zombie apocalypse. Claymores... grenade launchers.. jeep-mounted machine guns, Russian HIND attack choppers... I guess no apocalypse is ever perfect.
Posted by: Entropy at November 22, 2010 12:36 PM (IsLT6)
As far as the show goes, I've watched the episodes. I don't really have a problem with any cinematic licenses taken. Wouldn't add to the show if they spent time on dealing with how badly the sheriff was soiled after being unattended. Also, have no problem with it never raining. etc.
But except for a couple, the adult characters are not survivors. The only people anywhere near zeds would have learned long before several weeks had passed to be effectively armed at all times or dead. Really, parents making no more provision for the safety of their kids than to insist they stay nearby an unarmed mother? This is supposedly both America and the south. A lack of guns?
They'd be well-armed and easily so. Army or national guard positions overrun by zombies means weapons and unspent ammo lying around that the winners wouldn't be hauling off. They'd be overrun police, civilian, and rump militia defensive positions also. The sheriff has passed by Army/Guard positions twice. First one by the hospital in his home town and the next in Atlanta. Both positions he passed had humvees mounting either 7.62mm or M2 .50 cal machine guns. 7.62mm buys you a lot of space and I don't care if it's a body shot, .50 cal tears bodies to shreds. Now maybe scavenging the Atlanta position would have been a problem for the sheriff, but it implies there would be others.
The Vatos would be cruising around in humvees, not low riders, and wouldn't be fretting over a bag of shotguns
Posted by: Just Passing Through at November 22, 2010 12:36 PM (U0zad)
I'd be pretty pissed off I busted in and found naught but 435 years worth of MRE's.
Although... that wouldn't be terrible either.
A whole warehouse full of like... firing pins for guns but no guns.. that would suck.

I guess I was half-expecting her eyes to reopen and for her to lunge at her older sister with crazy zombie eyes...
Posted by: Neo-Con Artist at November 22, 2010 01:52 PM (n1JN0)
Another kicker in that scene. The sheriff, his family, and every other person who survived the attack all stared sympathetically at the sister scene. Not one attempted to pull the blond away from her younger incipient zombie sister. Also, wouldn't the 3 or 4 zombies who entered Ed's tent still be a threat. Not one person panned in the scene was still in eyes on the perimeter mode. I also expect a pathetic scene next week when the older blond refuses to allow the younger dead one to be brained.
Like I said, these people are not run up the learning curve survivor types.

From what I can tell the first three weeks of comments were the proverbial "my schlong is bigger than yours" debate with everything from "how to build a fuckin' fence and how I'd build it" to "where I'd go in a the great zombie apocalypse because I'm fuckin' smarter than you" in the great zombie apocalypse with a smattering of opinion about the show and its glaring issues.

Hey there, Big Bear, as long as we keep this all in fun, it's all good.
Now report to the fence building detail ASAP.
You wanna argue "how to build a fuckin' fence and how I'd build it?"
You can do that with a shovel in your hand and a roll of barbed wire at your feet.
Aww... the lack of leather gloves is causing you all sorts of pain in your hands? Gee...that's too bad. Now you're on latrine clean out detail. No gloves here either. Guess you'll just have to clean it out one dirty handfull at a time.

something as simple as some tanglefoot wire just wrapped between some trees a foot or so off the ground would work too. even just as simple as some electrical wire or scrounged cable wound around a tree once and stretched to the next.
better would have been a boat or 2. at night when the zombies are more active..everyone into the boats to rest. anchor way out in that quarry. I doubt those zombies can swim.
at the very least they should have parked closer to the water and bumper-to-bumper the vehicles "circling the wagons" so to speak.
