— Russ from Winterset OK, pretty eventful episode this week. Let's go right to the "spoilers" Well, Andrea's sister woke up, and BOY was she pissed. Could she have waited another second or two to pull the trigger? Yeah, put a bullet in your zombie sister's head when you're hugging her......with your head right next to hers. When she pulled the gun up to Amy's head, I figured that she was going to go all "zombie murder/suicide" and check out herself.
But Carol? She obviously got into the whole "dispose of the remains of your loved ones before they come back". She was a little tentaive on her first swing, but she really got into it as she realized that Ed wasn't going to get up off the ground and hit her back. As the Dixie Chicks would say...."Goodbye Ed".
Jim was just starting to be an interesting character, so OBVIOUSLY it was his turn to become Zombie Chow. I can sympathize with them trying to get him to safety and a possible cure at the CDC, but just leaving him sitting against a tree by the highway? Sure, they wanted to respect his dignity, but why leave an extra zombie around to chomp down on the next human that walks by? What if Morgan and his son run into Jim following Rick's radio directions? If I learned anything from watching "Saving Private Ryan", its that all Nazis AND Zombies should be executed instead of releasing them into the wild. Dale's got a hunting rifle with a scope, he could have opened a window on the RV and put a slug in Jim's brain before they pulled away and left him there.
And speaking of Dale, he really got a lot of screen time this week. Apparently, they figured that Glenn's had enough development and they're going to try to flesh out Dale a little. That scene with Dale and Shane in the woods was hellaciously creepy. I like Dale. He seems like a guy I'd like to go fishing & drinking beer with. His conversation with Andrea was some of the best interpersonal dialog that they've had since episode one.
Shane? I've been trying to be sympathetic to the man, but he's starting to creep me out. When he takes aim at Rick in the woods and keeps him in his sights before deciding not to kill him, you start to think that maybe, just maybe, Shane is thinking that a dead Rick means an instant family for Shane. I think we've all heard the spoiler on how this ends (at least in the written version), but even if we didn't they're doing all they can to put a neon freakin' target on Shane's back.
The CDC scientist is going to be an intriguing part of next week's story, me thinks. I was cleaning up the basement while trying to watch the end of the episode, but I could swear that I heard him tell his camcorder that the loss of the tissue samples in the lab sterilization was a big setback because all other zombie tissue was "necrotic dead tissue". Now, if you're into foreshadowing, you might think that a doctor who needs tissue from a newly infected person who hasn't "died" and reanimated yet might just view any new people coming into his laboratory as lab rats instead of allies.
I'm not saying that it's going to happen (I haven't read the source material, after all), but that's where my money would be bet if this were a sporting event. Which doesn't say much, if you've been following my NFL picks.

No worries about spoilers; the TV version is going to be totally different from the written version. In the comic, *spoiler* Shane was dead by issue #6, having been killed by Carl, of all people. None of this shit about the lone remaining biochemist at the CDC happened.
And my, the loss of The Only Available Magic Tissue That Could Well Have Resulted in a Cure was certainly convenient, wasn't it? I dunno; last week's episode was so incredibly stupid, and Rick in particular was so incredibly stupid (giving half his guns to the gangbangers-with-hearts-of-gold and then leading his group back to camp on foot) that I'm having trouble taking this show seriously now. In the preview for next week's ep somebody mentions that the French were the last to hold out against the worldwide zombie pandemic, which tells you right there how realistic all of this is.
(And I guess we're never going to see Merle again? Not that I want to, but....)

Pretty much. I'm not too sad that the second season won't start for nearly another year.
I am sad that I'm not sad, though, because this show had so much promise.

Oh man, I hadn't thought about that. A good guess though, given that they're minorities and this show loves to play the race card.

Yeah. Sucks that it's the only show in the genre. World War Z would work as a series. Maybe if the movie's a success someone could pitch that.

This show caught, killed, dismembered, cooked, consumed, & shat out the remains of the shark early on.
FIFY.
Seriously, though - what's happened to storytelling? I wonder if the "pre paid" approach to series television, instead of giving writers & producers (ever notice they're now often one & the same??) "Freedom", actually allows for lazy scriptwriting & storytelling...

What was up with the American flag in Dale's camper? Why was it upside down? How did they get that poj running again after dumping Jim under a tree when the radiator hose went again? The zombie should have been allowed to eat her sister- one less caharacter- should have kept Jim instead.
The CDC- are they kidding? Atlanta is zombie town and they go back a third time? How about scarfing up the guns and ammo as they get closer to the building? a couple of them should have been doing that as they were out of food and gas.

Are people complaining about story telling for a tv series about zombies? Really? Were you expecting Billiam Shakespeare?
I think the show is good. It is a decent mix of zombie attacks and character development.
Is it really that bad? Would you prefer one entire episode be nothing but dialogue? It's a fricking zombie show, 10-20% of the show does have to include zombies or zombie attacks.
My biggest complaint is that the CDC guy said the French held out. Really? I would have thought they would have surrendered, collaborated and then sold all their jews to the zombies.
Posted by: Ben at November 29, 2010 05:26 AM (wuv1c)
What's Merle's brothers name? I really like him. He's my favorite character. He's the only one with the natural instincts of survival.
I hope he survives the entire series, however they way they are building him up makes me think he's going to die sacrificing himself to save everyone else. It is the exact opposite of what you would expect from him. That's why its going to happen.
Posted by: Ben at November 29, 2010 05:30 AM (wuv1c)
The TV series has a softer touch than the comic, which is very bleak at times, and filled with gritty survivalist dilemmas. Rick's character is -2 INT, -3 WIS for the TV show conversion, but that is par for the course with Hollywood heroes who are not named "Dirty Harry".
(BTW for you guys out there who want to see a group of survivors who do it right the first time, every time, check out the anime "Highschool of the Dead". Heroes with skills, drama that doesn't interfere with the storyline, and some other attractions to occupy the eye between zombie-stomping.
The CDC is a made-for-TV story, dunno how it will work out. Hope they don't get stupid and try to "explain" the outbreak. Dead people trying to eat living people defies rational explanation & solution. Which is why the CDC guy is getting drunk off his ass when the others arrive.

I've had it with this show. The CDC scientist is what ruins it for me. Part of the appeal of the comic was there is no answers to what is going on.

How would you add to the story line? The writers have to walk a fine line between telling a story and killing zombie.
I am reading peoples complaints and they fall into two categories. Not enough zombie killing and complaints about the story line.
Well this clearly isn't a Zombieland adventure where it is just zombie killing. And the story line isn't terrible. There are a lot of characters, the show is clearly focused on developing maybe 6 or 7 of them. You can't go indepth with each one when you only have 6 one hour episodes.
Do you want it to be like the show 24, where all of the boring stuff is just ignored, like going to the bathroom and eating.
Would you prefer they not have taken the time to show how hard it is to dispose of the geeks body
Posted by: Ben at November 29, 2010 06:59 AM (wuv1c)
And Andrea is a carrier, after sitting for hours in a pool of infected blood, so she'll be the guinea pig.
Interesting microscope view of the zombie cells attacking and killing normal cells. At least, that's what it looked like to me before the doofus got everything destroyed.
I kept waiting for them to come up on the delivery truck and discover that Merle had delivered the zombies to their camp, but I guess that will be for another day. I'm thinking Daryl will have to take out his brother in order to protect the group.

"There are a lot of characters, the show is clearly focused on developing maybe 6 or 7 of them"
Why? If that's the story, then go with that. If not, then yes, go "Zombiland".
Here's the rub - who's the protagonist? Why should we care about him/her/them? Who's the antognist? The Zombies? The "Others"? The Cylons? (whoops... what was this story again?)
Seriously - watch RLM's videos, then go back over TWD.
FWIW, #33 nailed it. General Hospital: Apocalypse FTW!

Part of the problem is that they're taking absolutely f-o-r-e-v-e-r to advance said story. In last night's episode, it took literally 40 minutes for the story to start. Two zombies were killed, and one of those was in a manner right out of a soap opera. The pacing of this series is absolutely deadly.
Large chunks of the last three episodes were totally unnecessary; in the case of "Tell it to the Frogs" the entire episode was totally unnecessary. "Vatos" spent much of its time acting out an obnoxious PC racial morality play with characters that have no impact on the larger storyline and will never be seen again. This is not a good thing for a season that only runs six episodes, particularly considering that the producers had no idea when they were making them as to whether the series would be picked up for another season.
Maybe it would help if the show was cut down to a half-hour. Of course, then we still have the problem of the characters being dumb as a box of rocks.

"Part of the problem is that they're taking absolutely f-o-r-e-v-e-r to advance said story"
Not to go too far off track, but what exactly is the story?
I suspect the writers/producers wouldn't be able to answer that question either...

I also note for ease of shooting the story now takes place in summer, instead of late autumn/early winter like the comic. Having snow on the ground really lit a fire under the survivors in the comic. Maybe cruisin' in the Georgia sunshine defers plans for the future?
I am sure we have not seen the last of Merle. Those of you who have read to the mid-point of the comic prob'ly can guess where he will appear again. Like eventually gravitates to like, right?

Yeah, the episodes were good, for the most part, but what a way to go out. TWD is maybe getting teh suck out of the way early? One can only hope.
As far as Grace Park in a bikini, yeah. But it really does nothing for a show as horribly craptastic as 5-O."
Posted by: catmman at November 29, 2010 04:33 PM (DTzwU)
Yeah - I wasn't a big fan of the Lost finale, but the ride was good while it lasted. However, I think the BSG had the biggest "WTF was that" finale. But tangonine and naturalfake (and probably others as well) are correct in that TWD is an excruciating ride so far.
Have to disagree with Grace Park though - her in a bikini is everything to 5-0. It is barely watchable "craptastic" with her, and utterly unwatchable without.
Regardless, best series on TV is Hellcats. Exponentially more drama than TWD and girls in cheerleading outfits. win-win

Would some of you folks like some cheese to go with all of that "whine"?
This show is one of the only reasons I still tune into my TV. Sorry but reality shows with a bunch of silicone Barbies or lard assed fatties is not my idea of entertainment!
First I wouldn't let Daryl out of my sight. He's the only real survivor in the bunch and a deadly shot with that crossbow! I want to know if the Vato he shot in the ass is gonna turn given he reuses those arrows with only a casual wipe off of the Zombie guts.
Everyone can find fault with the pace, story line, twists etc. but this is a show about Zombies and the Zombies are GREAT!!! Picking apart a Zombie series cinematic qualities is a waste of time. What were you expecting? Citizen Kane! Try watching the original "Night of the Living Dead" for some perspective!
The dumbass sister lets the zed sis grab the back of her head for a little snack. I'm guessing a little finger nail scratch on the scalp is gonna give the CDC guy his freshly infected sample.
I'm looking forward to this show maturing for next year. The cast will be developed and the story line should be more involved and set.
It''s been a long time since I waited for a new episode to come out with the excitement of waiting for a new TWD week. There are only so many Sport's Illustrated Swimsuit specials on TV!!

Too funny, and agree with you re: most TV programming these days. That's why I was hopeful with this show. But, I need to start getting a few answers - otherwise, I have to disengage. I don't know about you, but why haven't we even had a "WTF happened while I was in a coma" question from Rick. He's a cop FFS. My experience with cops (excluding the ones from Reno 911) is... they ask a bunch of annoying fuckin questions until they're satisfied with the answers. Questions like, "do you know how fast you were going" and "why do you have 8 kilos of cocaine in your trunk" or my personal favorite two-part question "why is that blood on your hands, and where did it come from".
I think the filling in of the background would start to help out the series. But that's just my humble opinion.
Posted by: Bear Grylls at November 29, 2010 01:58 PM (n1JN0)
The gang with the heart of gold was ridiculous too. I will stick with the series for now. Though, I fear the writer may well have been poisoned by his association with Hollywood. The latest ep of the comic had a graphic panel of two guy's kissing.
Sigh. Pity, as I have read the entire series and really enjoyed it. Hope they don't try to explain the Z thing. As that would f up the comics too!

I have a hard time seeing why Rick's wife (I don't even know her name) is so worth fighting for. They haven't really developed her, but the little they have, she is a pretty whiny, selfish bitch. She waited what, 2 weeks after "hearing" that her husband was dead to take up with his besst friend?
Andrea is hotter and seems like a better person, so why doesn't shane just tap that? Also, why do they all simply listen to Jim or Shane? They haven't given any reason for that and neither of their decisions indicates a reason for blind following.
The jogging back to camp last week (and arriving fresh) was pretty bad. We were led to believe it was miles away - like perhaps 10 or more - so the idea of them jogging and arriving just in time and in fine shape is stupid.
The idea of allowing Andrea to cuddle her sister while she turns into a zombie is dumb. It takes you right out of the show. It's like, do you really believe that people struggling just to survive in such horrific circumstances would be so dumb? I have a hard time believing that.
I love how one second they have the RV steaming with no radiator hose and the next it's driving along just fine. And why take 20 cars for 10 people?
Overall the show is decent, but the writers seem to have no common sense. Like they would really allow Jim to hang out while he's turning into a zombie. And the old idea of someone hiding a bite and hoping he wouldn't turn is done in every single zombie flick. Please.
And the idea of gang-bangers tending to old and senile people is dumb. And the idea that various survivors wouldn't band together but would go their separate ways (looking for family in other states) is just idiotic. Really, you are going to forgo some sense of security from numbers to take your wife and kids on a multi state trip to find family members that are most likely dead? Really?
And when is Merle going to turn back up to fight them?
I try not to think about the show b/c the more I do the dumber it gets.
Posted by: Monkeytoe at November 30, 2010 04:24 AM (sOx93)
And why didn't these people trade their crappy old cars for humvees or other new model suvs? They could take any car along the road and they stick with what appears to be the worst old cars they could find. That makes no sense.
And they talk about not having guns, but they keep walking by dead soldiers manning 50 cals and other things. Based on the few survivors there appear to be, there should be guns lying around all over the place. Or what, did the zombies horde the guns?
Posted by: Monkeytoe at November 30, 2010 04:27 AM (sOx93)
Well, I'm all confused now after reading a couple of spoilers in the comments. I thought leaving Jim alive was sure to be the solution to the CDC's guys problem, but if the sister is infected I guess even that little bit of plot logic is gone.
I agree with all the comments about the slow pace and stupid characters, but they can't even keep continuity from one episode to the next. Jim gets handcuffed because he might be a danger to himself or others and the very next day they have no problem leaving him to die alone on the side of the road. To turn into a zombie. Wow, good thing they prevented him from getting heat stroke yesterday. And what the hell is the rule for zombie creation, anyway, with this story? The sister takes hours to "wake up". In the first episode Rick kills a zombie who has half a body left and is still moving, yet most of the corpses at the CDC are dead dead. Or are they sleeping? Zombies take naps, apparently?
And, yes, we are allowed to complain about unrealistic aspects of stories like this. We Buffy fans could swallow the existence of vampires, witches, werewolves, and all other assorted demons, but still think season 4 went off the rails with The Initiative and boy soldiers running around Sunnydale. It's when the real life parts of stories like this are unbelievable that the unbelievable parts lose their power to draw you in.
