— Russ from Winterset As season ending cliffhangers go, not bad. We lost another regular character this week. So the survivors made it to the CDC, only to find that the CDC is in shutdown mode, with one scientist still at his post.
The big "Andrea is infected" twist everyone was expecting never materialized. Apparently she was sick from drinking too much Nite Train or Val-U-Rite, not sick from infection.
Remember the grenade from Episode 2? It finally reappeared tonight. Not exactly "Deus Ex Machina", but I am wondering what kind of a cop Rick was if he "forgets" losing a freaking hand grenade.
We did get a good flashback to Rick's hospital room on "Bring a Zombie to Work Day", and we see that Shane didn't leave Rick to die on purpose. He just panicked and ran off two steps ahead of the walkers. Remember how some of us were speculating in the comments section about how Rick's room was barricaded, saving him from the zombies? Apparently, Shane was responsible for that.
Of course, Shane showed tonight that he's not exactly OK with going back to "sidekick" status, especially after he's got a few drinks in him. I guess we'll have to wait for Season 2 to see where this goes.
Jacqui and Andrea decide to stay behind with Dr. Jenner while the CDC facility goes through decontamination, via thermobaric explosives. Dale plays the "Well, if you're staying, so am I" card, and convinces Andrea to leave with the others, but Jacqui stays for the BBQ.
Overall, not a bad ending. I did notice that the rerun of last week's episode gives a timeline of 180-some days since "Wildfire was declared", and this week's episode noted that it was approximately 90 days since the worldwide spread of the infection. This means that Rick was in his coma for at least 5 months. Either that, or the original outbreak occured before Rick was shot and the government kept it from the public.
Five months in a coma? Obviously, the hospital didn't fall the week after Rick was shot, but even if he only spent a week or so unattended in the ruins that means that he was comatose longer than an NFL season. Don't tell me that his muscles wouldn't atrophy a bit while he was in that bed.
I'm still watching, but I'm not running out there to buy the episodes on DVD, or even get the Shane & Rick's Whorish Wife Action Figures (with shotgun AND Axe body spray, for those intimate woodland encounters).

PC Idiocy from tonight's edition of The Walking Dead:
1) CDC female chick was the genius ["an Einstein"]; her husband was the moron.
2) French valliantly held out to the bitter end; CDC Yanks all committed suicide instead.
3) Redneck dude continues to be the embarassment of the series; by contrast, black chick "gets it" and chooses nobility of suicide rather than persisting in hopelessness.
4) "All our thoughts" are in the electrical firing of our synapses - as though any "scientist" on God's green earth has the faintest idea of what a "thought" might amount to [in either the material world or the immaterial world].
Doubtless some other things that I can't think of right now.
PS: CDC dude whispering to sheriff dude was probably something along the lines of, "Last night, I was watching the security camera feeds, and your buddy tried to get some nooky from your wife, but she rebuffed his advances, which is how he got those scratch marks all over his neck."

Nothing about these people or their situation rings true. Not a single person besides this one oil-hating nutso chose to remain at the CDC, a fortified compound stocked with plenty of provisions? Everyone, Rick included, decided to just forget all about Jim and get drunk instead? After the entire group is assembled and told "the generators are going to go down in less than an hour" they just shuffle back to their rooms and then express shock when the lights start flickering? Oil-hating Nutso Scientist is trying to murder Rick's wife and child, and Rick goes after Shane for pulling a gun and telling him to open the doors?! The fucking French are the last holdouts, braver than any unwashed American?
What a disaster of a show.

Re big oil rant - the French have fucking nuclear power, proving their communists are a lot smarter than our communists.
The whisper - my guess is that the CDC people didn't commit suicide, they were in communication with a possible outpost of civilzation, and went to try to get there. Crazy CDC guy whispered the location.
Once again I was annoyed that they left military weapons on the ground, instead of arming themselves to the teeth.

BINGO.
Oh, and don't forget that this guy in the Atlanta CDC surrounded by "Star Trek" computers that talk back to him has no means whatsoever of communicating with any other government or military facility.
Yeah, like the sun suddenly stopped making UV rays and the photovoltaic cells on the satellites couldn't make power and all the satellites shut down.
I can see that terrestrial communications would shut down within a few weeks - but satellite?

And that would be a shame, because a well-done weekly zombie TV series could be an awesome thing (and I had every hope at the outset that this would be it). A week or two ago somebody suggested a zombie anthology series, one with no continuing characters. That would take care of the running who's-fucking-my-wife soap opera, for one thing.

Aggressively not. I tend to wait until the season's over to watch a show because I am too damned impatient, it also lets me heard how good/bad it is.
Now, you can never really tell for sure how good a show is based on other people's opinions, but it sounds like everyone in this show is a God-Damned Idiot, and I really hate that in a show.
Not only do you waste all your viewing time telling the idiots on the screen what to do, worst of all, they don't do it!
If you were referring to Dexter - as I said, I'm afraid they've ruined it with the "family reset," IMHO each season has been downhill from #1, with the last season showcasing the increasing incompetence of someone whose core characteristic is that he's methodical. It makey no sensey.

So is Dexter a father now?
I seem to recall that he was dating Darla from the Buffy-verse, but she was being kinda bitchy to him.
Also, I seem to remember the black dude getting blown up in a shack in the everglades - that was a definitely un-PC [so much so that it felt a little weird to watch it].

43 I'm going to write a screenplay in which there is some apocalyptic scenario -- zombies will do just fine -- and all the conservatives have the guns and the rations and the safe places out in the country, and all the liberal urbanites come out into the country looking for sanctuary from the zombie hordes. Then I'll have to decide whether to have my conservatives be altruistic or say to themselves "You mean we could just stand by and let the zombies eat all the liberals? Awesome!" Decisions, decisions.
Joncelli in the ONT
Better yet, have the libs show up and the compound, zombies hot on their feet and have the conservatives scream over the wall of the compound- "Why don't you negotiate with 'em? Start a dialog maybe."

Yeah, Dexter's a dad. I hate to elaborate so not to give any spoilers!
Season one was great, but I loved 2 and 4 as well. Three is definitely my least fave. I wish Dexter would keep his careful methodical sense about him as well, but to a degree, unexpected problems/events is what moves it all along. Season 5 definitely started out slow mainly due to a ton of housekeeping from season 4. But once it got going, it has been really good, IMO. I like how each season explores a different type of relationship out on a serial killer with no feelings. I worry they are having to evolve him to a point where he would no longer be considered a sociopath, which is kind of the entire premise of the show. But I must say, I do love me some Dexter!!

I'm sorry but his rant wasn't a rant and it wasn't about big oil. It was about how the power grid relies on fossil fuels and without people those things aren't going to stay running and that's going to shut down the power grid. It wasn't some "we're killing the world" rant.
Like I said in the ONT thread I think many have taken to viewing this show with the idea that it is biased and so every single little thing is taken in the way to confirm that bias.

Just one more example of the piss-poor writing on this show, right up there with Rick and crew heading back to camp on foot and the RV's shot-to-hell radiator hose that magically repaired itself after they dropped Jim off by the side of the road.

I guess my biggest issue with this show has been what I've always had a problem with on the spate of high-flight genre shows over the last decade, which is good drama ruined by liberal delusions, fantasies and anxieties. BSG was a textbook example of a show that went downhill. Besides a few occasional bleed-throughs, it had fairly solid plot logic for the first two seasons, with a mixture of tragedy and triumph. Season three had some WTF! badass moments, but about halfway through lost its mind and became about a subtle as a five-iron to the temple. This culminated with the writers literally putting lies into the mouth Lee Adama in defense of Gaius Baltar, betraying their own continuity so they could deceive the audience and give a grand Leftist sermon. That lead to an endless parade of repeated plotlines, angst, character stupidity, and a lack of human realism, where everybody brooded, yelled, whined, cried, drank, fought, and generally behaved like assholes, but never told a joke or whistled a tune. Oh, and the admiral in BSG: Razor was supposed to be some type of charismatic and hard-fighting commander who earned the undying loyalty of her troops, but all I saw was a emotionally unstable train-wreck making tactical mistakes a five year-old could've avoided (getting men killed and her ship increasingly damaged) and then covering it over with violence.

Oh shit, and I just realized: Especially especially since Rick knows that Morgan and Morgan Jr. are likely to be headed that way? Was there a part of Rick's CB message to Morgan that the show cut away from before we could hear it, something along the lines of "Oh, and by the way, watch out for the insane one-handed killer redneck who hates black people and whom we believe may still be lurking around the area"?

Near the end of "Vatos", when Rick and crew get back to where they'd left the van only to find it missing, one of them (think it was Rick) says something like "Merle must have loaded it up with geeks and taken them back to camp!" That's why they're in such a frenzy to get back there at the end of the ep -- which they do on foot rather than get another vehicle, which is another thing.

The governor? the governor of what? Georgia?
They may do this next season, so possible spoiler: in the comic, the Governor is a megalomaniacal psycho who fortifies a small town, keeps people he deems necessary (doctors, etc.) prisoner there, traps Rick and Glenn when they find the place, and cuts off Rick's hand, which for Merle would be poetic justice.

There's more to complain about, but I think this episode in particular suffered from being extremely contrived in the classic characters-say-and-do-dumb-stuff-to-move-the-story-along way. Instead of leveling with everyone at the beginning and explaining the situation, the CDC scientist apparently felt like giving everyone a merciful death, without taking the initiative to tell anyone about his little plan. He doesn't seem to actually lie about what he's doing, but as time passes and his guest gradually ask more questions he either answers truthfully when it's needed to move the story a long, or clams up and walks off when more information would cause the characters to learn too much before the OMFG-countdown-to-doom.
On the other half of the equation, the other characters, do their part by not asking too many questions too soon. Conveniently, after one of them expressed surprise the scientist had a rifle during a zombie apocalypse, the intellectual curiosity of all the other characters is tapped out and soon they seemed more interested in debating whether Rick's son should have a bit of wine than asking a lot of questions about the CDC, zombies and what was going on in the world. In fact, it seemed like a number of times when they (I think Dale, specifically) eventually got around to asking the scientist a question or two at dinner, and later breakfast, they acted acted apologetic, like they were asking something rude or inappropriate.
I can understand showers, food and alcohol were big temptations, and I can see how some people might want to talk about something more positive but, come on, it's not like there's much else going on in the world to make small talk about and this information is important. It just seems to me that at least one of the people would have pestered the scientist with questions soon after arrival, wanting to know what's going on, perhaps one of the old people nobody wanted to see in the shower montage. The problem is if someone did ask questions early on, and the scientist remained honest, or refused to answer questions, the fact that something was wrong would have been apparent early on, so everyone rations their questions so we can build up to a race-against-the-clock ending.

Personally, I thought they were too trusting of the scientist dude, although I understand their relief. Shane tried to grill him a bit, but the others shut him down. Usually, when someone offers you hospitality in a situation like that, they have some nefarious plan for you. I was waiting for him to deliberately infect one of them so he could run more tests.
I was disappointed that Andrea decided not to stay, she's an annoying little bitch. And the whole "you don't get to make someone care and then check out" speech was annoying as well. The other chick was like "hello, I'm sitting right here, but you don't give a shit about me?"
As far as what was whispered to Rick at the end, he seemed a little stunned but not unduly pissed or upset. Guess we'll see.

Right when the show would pick up steam, it would stop..
Again, Vatos being the prime example.. instead of the show down that was being built up, the gang-bangers were frakking nurses in an old folks home.
The other low point, showing where Merle cut off his own hand. to get free.. Instead of the noticeably less painful option of cutting the cuff chain or the threaded rod the handcuffs were attached to.

(before real zombies broke in and attacked them.. causing the one trooper to shoot everyone else)
Shane was in a confined hallway when multiple bursts of M-16 fire went off... so of course he's not going to hear a heartbeat..

More problems,
Why wasn't the whole city of walkers aroung the vehicles when the bomb went off???
What happened to the helicopter in episode 2?
A scientist couldn't figure out where some diesel fuel was being store?
If he didn't know what casued the virus, then why the blood tests???
Why don't walkers eat their own?????
If the people have fuel for their vehicles, why don't they drive the tanks.
It's like the hired the Lost writers and don't care about open threads.

So when they pounded on the door of the CDC, didn't they yell that they were "out of gas and out of food"?
So, after that small (semi) nuclear explosion, aren't they still out of gas?
Where are they going?
Trying not to nitpick too much but I'm guessing that they grabbed some snacks from the CDC cafeteria on their way out the door.. At least a day's worth..
I'm giving the show a pass for the Fuel Air bomb underground at the end..
Considering everything else about it.. It's the least smallest plot hole they have..

What's the point in expressing an interest in a show when everyone around is telling you how badly it sucks?
It still has my interest. It seems that a lot of you are forgetting two things: 1) the story is based on a freakin' comic book; and, 2) the characters are imperfect, as are most real life people.
I will concede that Vatos sucked ass and was totally pointless. And stupid.

It's the least smallest plot hole they have..
OTOH, they certainly didn't gas up from the "Generator" that runs the CDC.
I mean really....
Lord, I don't know why I even get into this. After BSG, Lost, and who knows what else, I should have given up.
Logic is not these writers best quality.

That's what I saw in that hospital scene. Those appears to be live people (doctors and nurses) the military was executing. Maybe the military's last ditch effort to quarantine the virus/mold/bacteria/whatever was to eliminate those that may be infected due to close contact...
I assume once that failed, the military next effort was to begin containment within Atlanta by executing anyone trying to leave the city.
Other than the fact that the CDC is located in Atlanta, not sure why the nuclear option wasn't executed... maybe disease spread occurred to quickly, or the thought of nuking your own city/citizens too much... although once you begin executing mass quantities of people with conventional weapons - the next step to nuclear isn't a very big step...

Nope, it was stated by one of the characters in "Vatos" that Merle must have loaded up the truck with zombies and brought them back to camp.

Although, if the military is killing doctors/nurses/patients, etc., not sure how Rick survives given the one military dude has Rick in his sights as Shane hides behind Rick's bed. Another small plot hole, I guess...

Better than most of the ideas we've seen in the show so far..
Miles above and beyond the gang bangers/nurses and caregivers for the elderly.

Shit, i missed this turning into a Dexter thread.
I love Dexter, I acutally was a fan of the book before the series, but I will admit the Season 1 and 2 were better than the books, which were different in many ways. By book three i stopped reading because it got increasingly stupid and supernatural.
Season 3 was an abortion and a total waste. I hate Jimmy Smitts.
Dexter's essentially played out like this
Season 1 : getting to know dexter, Dexter's introspection about his past.
Season 2: Dexter doing everything he can to not get caught
Season 3: Dexter desperately wants a friend, someone he can share his secret with, instead he ends up killing Prado and marrying Rita
Season 4: Dexter's trials as a married man, infatuation with the Trinity Killer and ends with his life being turned upside down
Season 5: Dexter finally finds someone he can not only share his secret with, but someone who will participate with him. We'll find out what happens in the finale Sunday.
I don't know if Dexter is resigned for anymore seasons. So we'll see what happens. I imagine everything will turn out fine as Showtime is HBO's bitch and Showtime only has 2 "hit shows" in Weeds and Dexter. And Weeds jumped the shark after season three, but they've managed to put together a total of six seasons and it doesn't look like they will be stopping anytime soon. I imagine they keep Dexter until the ratings decline.

Well, the Winnebago's radiator hose magically repaired itself at the side of the road last week within a few minutes; what's a little gas?
Posted by: The War Between the Undead States at December 06, 2010 08:28 AM (CwkQz)
Also, I'm still going to watch the show. I agree the vatos episode was a total stupid waste of time and too much time is spent on petty squables, but I still enjoy the show as a form of entertainment. It isn't a masterpiece or anything. Also, it suffers from the same common sense mistakes that every horror or post apocolyptic film does.
As was brought up here, there are ton's of 50 caliber machine guns, m-16s, tanks, and APC's just chilling around. Why not grab one of them? or all of them?
Also what the hell happened to Merlye? How can you just kinda ignore that?
Also I don't get why people hate shane. He's done everything he could to help Dale and his family and yet Dale dooks all over him at every opportunity. I know he was sleeping with Dale's wife, but as they say it takes two to tango, and he legitimately thought Dale was dead. Why wouldn't he? He saw the military executing living people, he natually assumed the walkers or military got dale.
Posted by: Ben at December 06, 2010 08:31 AM (wuv1c)
I think they covered that as best the could.. When leaving Dan by the side of the road to die, they mentioned something about a gas station up ahead and part of the group left to check it out. The old man said to see if they had anything to fix his RV with..
It was told, not shown like any good visual median does (sarc off).
Lots of stuff between scenes and episodes that could be used to fill plot holes..
But I'm not a member of the screen writer's guild..
Posted by: Dave C at December 06, 2010 08:33 AM (vjkov)
BTW, they fired all the writers on the show. So I am guessing the second season will be better.
Also, I'm guessing that the CDC doctor told Dale where other "safe places" were in the US and to try to get there and see if anyone survived.

Well obviously the survivors found a few spare flux capacitors lying around the CDC and installed them while waiting for Dale and Andrea.

I was cheering when Shane, a tone of suspicion in his voice, finally did ask the question I've been screaming since last week: Why the hell are you the only guy left and what happened to all the other scientists? Nutso Oil-Hating Scientist gives a very vague, evasive answer, and Glenn whines to Shane, "Man, you are such a buzzkill!" Back to the drinking. On this show, asking questions that any normal person would in a suspicious situation makes you the bad guy.

Aside from the threat of Drunken Shane.
But that next morning, I would want them to start asking some serious questions...

The comic book was much more believably and interestingly written than this show. This would never have been brought to television had it not been for the quality and popularity of the source material. Indeed, it's interesting that every time the show completely departs from the comic, as with the "vatos" and the CDC storyline, and the character of Merle versus the Rainbow Coalition of survivors, it goes way off the rails. When it sticks close to the source material, as all of Episode 1 did, it's been very good. That's not because I'm upset the writers are deviating from the original story; I'd be fine with that if they were demonstrating any ability to make the new elements match the quality of what was originally laid out.
And it isn't that the characters are imperfect; they're written not as characters at all, but broadly-drawn archetypes, indeed in the case of some, stereotypes. They're written to behave in whatever manner necessary to move the (glacial) plot along, not in ways that are natural or believable.

True, but when logic goes out the window, you have to wonder about the writers.
Look at the finale of the X-Files. It was a 2 part episode, with various characters on trial. And as they tried to sum up the series, it made less and less sense.
We are just saying Look! If you want to present something along this line (zombies, whatever), make it reasonable. How would you or I react in this situation?
In the show they don't react as we would. That's the problem.

yeah, it's showtime's golden goose. They can't let it go away, they have nothing to replace it with.

In response to some other posters, there has been a real bad case of survival/action drama show characters getting a bad case or libertarditis. That's an inflammation of the stupid gland, characterized by hyper-emotional mindset, loss of analytical skills, and a tendency to blame everything on Capitalism and Bush. It's not automatically a buzzkiller for me, but it does tend to get in the way of a good story. It is taking over from the environmental armageddon as the most over-used story trope these days. Then again, I guess all SWG people in NYC and Hollywood must think the whole USA is like their own little elitist suburb. Maybe the next batch of writers will figure out The Walking Dead involves people who live in flyover country, for better or worse.
Given some of the comments posted here, I retain my belief that gamers will all survive the zombie apocalypse...not to mention most of the other survivable forms of apocalypse. We know what the score is, and intend to come out winners. Surviving is winning.
As for the whole "180 days" thing...I just ignored that whole thing. I sort of wished they hadn't try to "explain" things, and just let the mess roll onward from Day 1, when Rick re-entered a world gone mad. Like I've said before, you can't explain dead people re-animating, and eating the living. You just have to deal with it. Some people choose not to deal with it and despair, but that's how things turn out for some people. We call them "losers", and are well rid of them, even if they previously had positions of importance. Ought to have called that scientist "Denethor" and be done with it.

That said, I'll still watch next season. While I find it too PC at times, I can ignore most of it (not Vatos or the view that all Southern white men are either (a) racist, (b) stupid or (c) "a" and "b").
Dexter is starting to veer off track, but is still a good show. He's making a big mistake by ignoring his dad's advice on a "partner", and that can't end well.
Breaking Bad starts again soon, and it is a quality show.

Certainly would not be a tool user with just the brain stem active. When the foragers that Rick met in Atlanta after getting out of the tank were under seige, zombies were using stones or rocks or something to crack the front door panels.

My husband and I agree that the big redneck they left handcuffed to the pipe is the guy one would want in your corner. He's by far the best looking of the guys and who cares if he's unenlightened, someone has to skin the animals. While I like the deputy's looks, his altruism is impractical and unlikely in this situation. The group's motto would most probably be, "Kill or be killed."
Happily the writing is really beginning to lag so in the near future I probably will not be woken from a sound sleep by screams and gunshots. The roar of a full-throttle hemi down a deserted freeway doesn't bother me. Screams and gunshots are a whole other thing.

Historically speaking, the French have always been scientists and philosophers. They're way better equipped than we Yanks are to hold out in the face of some biological/possibly theological disaster. We're good at fighting things we know, can point out, and can then target with a laser guided bomb. They're better with theory and thought work.
If you don't believe me, just take some time to study the past 300 years worth of philosophy and intellectual theory that went into setting the foundations for the modern age. Most of those important ideas have a French name attached to them.
They might not fight well with guns, but they do indeed have some great thinkers.
