There's a Contested House Race Near You [someone]
— Open Blogger

Ace may be waiting for a better-organized data set, but the folks at 40 Seats have identified 80-90 incumbent Democrats that can be had in November and put 'em on a nice map. So click over and see what's in play in your neighborhood.

The site still doesn't have much info on the GOP challengers, but it's a good place to see what you can do locally. You may be surprised: there's a swing seat even within New York City.

In the last decade there have been numerous elections decided by 0.01% of the vote or so, as if voters' choice was nearly random.

Why is that?

9 Hmm, I don't see MA-5 on the list. I don't know how the two Republican candidates state up against Tsongas, but she didn't win by much in 2007, which was a very strong Democrat year...

Posted by: 18-1 at September 06, 2010 10:31 AM (bgcml)

10 I think they are missing a few.  A strong conservative running on the message of reversing the course set by Obama might take OK2 and KC3.

11 This is bullshit.  Of the 8 congressional districts in Maryland, only Frank Kravitol from district 1 is vulnerable?

13 Good site. I've been sending some pretty good amounts to the challenger in TX-23, Quico Canseco, and sure enough, he was leading Rodriguez in the last poll. I don't live in the district, but our family business is there. It went Dem after it was redistricted on the Voting Rights Act. It had a Latino rep, but apparently he was the wrong kind of Latino--a Republican--so they had to redraw it. It would be sweet to get that district back.

15 John Boccieri, the 1st term Rep from Ohio-16, is actually a good dude. Vet, self-made guy, former minor league ballplayer, very corteous in person. Still, he's voted for all the wrong things in a district that last I checked is R+4, and he's going up against Jim Renacci, self-made millionaire and former mayor of Wadsworth, OH. Renacci's a real nice guy, used to be President and GM of the Columbus Destroyers before the Arena League folded. He's going to wipe the floor with Boccieri.

Posted by: Pelayo at September 06, 2010 10:36 AM (QLmzi)

18 Eddie Bernice Johnson's district isn't on the map, but after she stole those scholarships, I wonder if she couldn't be made vulnerable by an influx of cash to Stephen Broden, who's a terrific guy. He has a lot less $ than she does.

May be a pipe dream, but I sent him $25 just for the heck of it. This is the year.

Posted by: stace at September 06, 2010 10:38 AM (LYakY)

19 Gerry Connolly is a cobalt-blue Dem in a +2 R district.  NoVa has become quite blue in parts, but he is vulnerable, as you can tell by the fact that he lies about his record nonstop.  He came to a church service I was ushering once.  He was late and seemed miffed that we didn't stop the service while he was escorted to his pew.  Douche.

Having a hard time getting fired up about the elections?

How about a little tummy rub from a guy anyone on the left would certainly call the original moron.  And they would mean it.  Idiots.

Remember who said this?

"Socialism only works in two places: Heaven where they don't need it and hell where they already have it."

'Here's my strategy on
the Cold War: We win, they lose.'

'The most terrifying words
in the English language are:

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'

'The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so.'

'Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the  U.S.  was too strong.

'I have wondered at
times about what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the U.S. Congress.

'The taxpayer: That's someone who works for the federal government but doesn't have to take the civil service examination.'

'Government is like a baby:
An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other'

'The nearest thing to eternal
life we will ever see on this earth is a government program.'

'It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession.
I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first'

'Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases:

If it moves, tax it.  If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it'

'Politics is not a bad profession. If you succeed,
there are many rewards; if you disgrace yourself, you can always write a book.'
'No arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is as formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women.'

'If we ever forget that we're one nation under GOD, then we will be a nation gone under.'

49 Chicago (AP) - President Barack Obama won his home state with 62 percent of the vote in 2008, but new poll numbers show Obama's support in Illinois has slipped.

The Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV poll shows Illinois voters are split on Obama's job performance. The poll found 51 percent approve of how the president is doing, compared with 39 percent saying they disapprove.

The poll also shows 47 percent of voters disapprove of the way Obama has handled the economy, compared with 42 percent who say they approve.

Keep up the good work Barry

My Dad was on the AFL-CIO Central Labor Council of Alameda County for many years and used to get the big Dem Presidential candidates to come to the Labor Day Picnic in Pleasanton, CA, to give their stump speeches.  Obama is no friend to the working man -- to certain of the union bosses, maybe, but not to the rank-and-file members.

It was worse than I said. I'm underestimating the mendacity of the Fuckwit-in-Chief's speech.

I walked into a room where the speech was playing on TV; I crawled out, leaving a trail of vomit behind.

In fairness, as "Poppin' Fresh" would say, the speech was intended for union thugs and hardcore handout-grabbers. That even those brain-damaged leeches didn't boo him off the stage amazes me.

Squad Leader, I wouldn't have allowed the sorry SOB to clean the bilges in my engine room.

We used to use brig rats for that but the chaplain made us quit so we had to have E-6s through E-5s doing it.

I mentioned it up thread. I had Fox on the TV and the speech came on and I heard it while I was screwing around on the computer. He was yelling and whipping up the crowd like a real demagogue, not the way a president would make a routine Labor Day speech or whatever the occasion would be. He's a fucking maniac and getting pretty scary.

193 As I told the rep from my local congresscritter (Tim Bishop, NY-1) I've never voted straight ticket before in my life, in fact I've asked my wife (Chicago Democrat, but read her Heinlein) to look at each SOB on the ballot and decide individually.

With that non-partisan record, I will not be voting for a single Democrat this cycle.

It won't hurt my congresscritters, Bishop lost my vote when he cosponsored the card check bill (I believe it was in '04 he was #4 in taking union dollars.  As Heinlein said, he's an honest pol, he stays bought.)  As for Schumer, enough said.  And when Gillibrand turned into Schumer's mini-me, um, I mean her politics evolved to make the whole state obey NYC gun laws (not quite how she phrases it, but pretty accurate) but I like my local state assemblyman.

And if Patterson were running for reelection, well, then I'd be in a real pickle.  So I got that going for me.
