Tiger's Faith Questioned...Your Official Masters Thread.
— Jack M.

For the record, I'm rooting for Tom Watson. I'm still bummed out over his British open choke.

Nevertheless, Tiger Woods is the focus of this years Masters. And with great coverage comes great scrutiny.

Including of one's religious faith. Tiger did, after all, attempt to explain his various and sundry marital infidelities on having strayed from his belief in Buddhism.

Apparently, not everyone in the gallery was inclined to accept this rationalization, as the following sign shows:

Ahh, yes. The great religion of Bootyism, as revealed to the masses by the prophet (p.b.u.h) Sir Mix-A-Lot.

Me? I'm just thankful that Tiger didn't claim to be an adherent of the Japanese religion of "Shinto". That just sounds all freaky and foot fetishy even without any embellishment. And I'm sure that the resultant signs would have been well outside the norms of PGA etiquette.

And, as you all well know, we here at AoSHQ are, if nothing, all about the etiquette.

6 Tiger is such a pussy. What I find really interesting is Tiger's insistence that this is private while at the same time appearing in a Nike ad about what he claims is private. I really never thought about Nike until I saw the stupid, hypocritical, creepy ad. I ain't buying Nike anymore. They can have each other. Oh, my wife, everytime she sees Tiger on TV now, says loudly "He's such a pussy! I can't believe they let pussies like that play in the Masters!"

Obama seeks to reassure ex-Soviet states on Russia ties

PRAGUE (AFP) – US President Barack Obama on Thursday assured former Soviet-bloc states in central Europe that Washington would not sideline them despite its warming ties with Russia, the Czech prime minister said.

44 42 I'm not sure whatthefuckpoint there is to the manic coverage

It's been like that for a long time, including before the scandal.  I gather that the PGA makes a lot of money off of Tiger and they also see/saw him as a way to make inroads in Asia (and perhaps with American blacks, I dunno about that).

I was never a Tiger fan - he seems like an android to me - but the coverage crap really puts me over the edge.  I wish he would go away.

I hope Anthony Kim kicks ass.  He's extremely telegenic, seems bright and nice, and might give the PGA someone else to focus on.

52 I gather that the PGA makes a lot of money off of Tiger

IIRC, the ratings when Tiger is in a tournament are double and when he's in contention are something like 10 times when anyone else is.  So.  Yeah.  The PGA has a vested interest here.

I think Tiger will win simply because I also assume Tiger will win.  I would love to see Watson win.

For the record, I think Watson's performance at the British was fine.  It was a major dissapointment to lose (especially on a pretty easy putt) but second is still awesome.

At least Tiger, putrid dipshit that he is, has awesome talent at the mindless activity he's paid to do.  (I love golf, but it's just a game).

The Precedent, on the other hand, is totally talentless and without two brain cells to rub together.

Yeah, I always have to fight the urge to link Obama and Woods together in my mind.  They do have a lot of similarities, including narcissism and a maniacal fan-base, but at least Tiger earned his position through hard work and ability.  Obama is a creation of the Left.  He's Frankenstein's monster in a nice suit.

Really?  Why?  There are tons of examples of privileged narcissists who get themselves into messes and "overcome" it.  It's not like he's broke or anything.  He's got enough money to hire handlers for every conceivable aspect of his life.  He should be able to get over it.

131 129 Y-not, chill out.  On some level, a real narcissist never owns up.  Tiger manned-up big time.

I'm not unchilled, but I really am sick of stories about celebrities who screw up when they have so much going in their favor and then expect to be patted on the head when they buy their way back out of the mess.

Tiger's pressers yesterday were nauseating.  In the first informal one (before the main one) he compared his situation to some guy who was coming back from an injury.  That's rich.  At least in the first interview he remembered to acknowledge the fans.  By the time he got to the second presser, he forgot to thank the fans and he continued spinning this back from injury analogy.

Everything he does is controlled.  That's why he's a great golfer.  But in terms of manning up, I just see no evidence of that.  He communicated primarily through press releases and prepared statements (all that was missing was the TOTUS) and left the other golfers to field all the questions.  His first ad since this happened is simply bizarre.  And remember how he upstaged the Accenture match?

The guy's a jerk.

--never work again

--never do another interview discussing the matter, since those things don't count

--never use that evil dick again

181 177

I figured out Y-not.  This is what Tiger has to do to earn himself a second chance in her mind:

ha ha

He can't get a second chance, because I never particularly cared for him.  He's a great golfer, but I don't like watching him play because he has no personality on the course.  Ok, he has some personality - throws his clubs when he screws up and fist pumps when he does well.  He's just not my kind of athlete.

When the Woods story first broke, I defended him.  When the story was not clear and everyone was making what sounded like a pretty standard argument between husband and wife into something salacious, I defended him (here, I believe, and elsewhere).  I didn't think it was fair to jump all over him for not being a great role model when I never had the impression that he was one in the first place.  The ads I'd seen of Tiger did not paint him as some great family man, just a great golfer.  At the time I thought that had someone like Phil Mickelson been caught in a similar situation, that would have been a bigger deal because Phil's persona rests in some measure on his relationship with Amy.  I didn't think that was the case for Tiger.

But as things unraveled and as Tiger kept up with the "I deserve my privacy" crap, leaving the other golfers to deal with the media frenzy, my sympathy waned.  The shear number of women he boffed certainly didn't help.  Then he upstaged Accenture, he held a press conference without questions (and used his mom and others as human shields), and copped out with the sex addiction thing.  Really, the only noble thing he did was cover for Elin, keeping the mother of his kids out of jail.

What I find amusing is how rabid the pro-Tiger fans are.  If anyone criticizes Tiger in any way, they leap to defend him.  If someone points out his shortcomings, they attack the messenger.  Reminds me of O-bots.

You're clearly bothered by what a lone moronette thinks about your hero.  Perhaps you should seek therapy.

Love how Nantz tries to make the aerial flyover of the current hole as dramatic as possible.

211 What's Couples shooting?

Posted by: rdbrewer at April 09, 2010 12:26 PM (TFnqE)

Freddy (i crash on his couch sometimes) slid back to -3.  So he'll make the cut.

Posted by: Dang Straights at April 09, 2010 12:27 PM (fx8sm)

213 I think plaid golf pants and a flowered Buffett shirt would be a good look.

I see nothing wrong with plaid on the course.   It makes a bold statement that says "I'm not afraid to chug scotch during my round."

215 Knickerbockers should make a comeback. Give Payne a grin too!

Earlier I said, "I'm great in sand."

That's because I get a lot of practice.

217 My dad was real fond of Johnny Walker Black...  And he made alot of bold statements....

Westwood just went to -10.

He(Tiger)also said he was dissappointed in Masters chairman Billy Payne for giving him the what-for in a press conference earlier in the week.

can ya imagine that?

Posted by: dananjcon at April 09, 2010 12:52 PM (pr+up)

223 hell Billy could have slapped him up side the head and said what were you thinking boy.

More reason to pull for Watson:

Conservative Tom Watson, who shared the Ben Hogan comeback-from-injury award with Ken Green, began by saying, "I feel like President Obama accepting the Nobel Peace Prize. He actually said, 'I'm undeserving of this award.' And I believed him." (applause). We'll I am undeserving too compared to what my fellow golfer Ken Green went through."

225 I just realized Augusta stopped using Tidy Bowl in the water.  That stuff looked sick.

Posted by: rdbrewer at April 09, 2010 12:58 PM (TFnqE)

226 I live and grew up in Ga., I know how the older guys think. And Billy was more pissed than what he was going to say on tv.

hi Jane.

Posted by: Racefan at April 09, 2010 01:04 PM (UhXch)

231 Hi, Racefan.  Husband came home early to catch the Masters.  He's pulling for Watson or Couples.  Doesn't think they'll make it, though.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at April 09, 2010 01:08 PM (UOM48)

232 I have a big problem with Tom Watson. Does no one remember when he and Nicklaus were playing down the stretch years ago and he went over and looked in Nicklaus' bag to see what club he used?

That is cheating to a purist like me.

233 it aint over until its over....  2 long days left.

Posted by: Racefan at April 09, 2010 01:14 PM (UhXch)

234 I'd like anybody but Tiger to win. And there was another plane ad which said something like, "You're a sex addict; Yeah, me too." I'd like to give a kiss to whoever paid for those ads. Hysterical!

Nawww, they just grounded him until the reinspection, which will be 1st thing Monday when the tuna-mint's ovah.

Less to do with Eldrick and more to do with the sensitive nature of the Augusta National Egos.

They should rent another plane.

Exactly.   Elin can afford it, especially if Tiger does well.  Nike's still cutting him checks, anyway.

Methinks no more banners will be seen, Augusta's tentacles of power run deep. I heard you have to be a 33rd degree Mason and direct descendant of Alexander the Great to be a member.

I swear!
