Times Square Bomber Nearly Got Away
— DrewM

We can't keep counting on the incompetence of terrorists but first we have a bit of work to do on our own end.

(Faisal) Shahzad, who had been the subject of a huge manhunt, almost made it out of the country on a Emirates flight to Dubai, with a planned connection onward to Pakistan, according to the officials.

"He appeared real close to getting away," one federal official said. "The plane was buttoned up. Backed away from the jetway."

Authorities said that despite the manhunt, his passport had not been flagged and he was able to buy a ticket with cash and clear airport security.

FBI agents discovered Shahzad's car parked in a short-term lot at JFK airport Monday evening and searched for his name on airline passenger manifests.

The flight had begun to taxi for takeoff when FBI agents ordered it to return to the gate where Shahzad and two others were taken into custody. The other two were later released, authorities said.

Now it wasn't really quite that close. If they had been a few minutes later they could have ordered the plane to return, land somewhere else or worst case scenario, arrested him in Dubai or when he got off the plane in Pakistan.

Still, questions need to be asked about how a wanted terrorist manage to buy a ticket, presumably a one way ticket to Pakistan and still get on a plane. Did the NYPD/FBI not ask State/TSA to flag it? Or did the breakdown occur in the implementation?

8+ years after 9/11 and we're still treating old ladies at airports like they are prison drug mules but this can happen?

The system is not working.

Added: Mayor Bloomberg emails to say, "We are investigating reports this individual was heading to Pakistan, not to escape law enforcement but because he can't stand living in the US now that health care reform has been signed into law".

19 I know that some right wing organization paid for the car and materials used, then paid this poor guy to do their dirty work for them. They didn't have the balls to do it themselves, so they find a poor brown skinned person, who probably has been out of work for a while, (thanks to BushHitler totally ruining our economy) and they offer the poor guy money to drive this car and park it in Times Square. Of course he's gonna do it, he needs the moeny, probably hasn't eaten in a week or two. The clue that gives these southern racists rednecks away is the fact that there was fertilizer in the car. So we need to start researching what right wing organizations are based in a southern state, they will probably have ties to the farming industry. Possibly John Deere or Farmers Insurance Group would be good places to start looking.

21 TSA has designed its security for posturing. They don't have the capability to do much else. However, the report I heard this morning indicated that there was no danger of his escape, and that he was being followed closely. That was probably the FBI and NYPD, both of which have at least some competent agents.

The bigger issue is why this guy was naturalized! It's as if we have a death wish.

The great bomber bought a car off CL. Traceable. Doesn't know about hidden VIN numbers on cars. Builds a piece of shit bomb that fizzles. Then tries to fly out of the area he tried to bomb instead of just taxiing out of an airport beyond local scrutiny.

31 The most amusing thing on Fox in the early hours was the exchange between the LEO and the Fox security consultant who said it was another failure by this administration because this was the second time we had been saved by the incompetency of the bomber.

He blamed the "Won" because he is not actively going after the terrorists on their own ground so now they are coming here.

The LEO tried to tie this to domestic terrorism because the guy was a "citizen".  I guess he wasn't clued up on the fact that the guy had been a citizen for less than a year and was likely planning then when he came here.

NYC mayor: Bias will not be tolerated Published: 5/4/10, 10:25 AM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg says New York City "will not tolerate any bias" following the arrest of a U.S. citizen from Pakistan in the Times Square car bombing attempt.

Bloomberg said Tuesday that also applies to potential backlash against Muslim New Yorkers.

The mayor said there are "a few bad apples" among any groups. He also cited New York's long history of accepting cultures from the around the world.

61 FBI nabs a terrorist less than 72 hours after he attempted to bomb Times Square. Write a story criticizing on how he almost got away.

Excellent point Poly. It would have taken about 3 or 4 hours of good police work to identify this asshat. At that point it would have been all hands on deck. No chance this fucker was escaping. They in fact exercised excellent judgment in letting him board to identify potential co-conspirators. They pulled two others off and let them go.

I used to call this good police work. The cops can't publicize all of their actions. It allows the defense to build a case, fucks up jury pools.

Is it really that hard to make a bomb? What kind of training do they receive in pakistan and afghanistan? are their teachers incompetent?

I am just amazed that we've lucked out so many times. This guy, the underwear bomber, richard reid, etc etc.

I would think that it would be easy to make a crude and effective bomb.

Look at Tim McVeigh, he was able to make a bomb, almost entirely by himself that was capable of taking down an entire building. And all he had was american army training.

I'm glad we've lucked out, I truly am, but I am also starting to wonder if we've killed off all the smart terrorists trainers in the middle east and only the rejects are left.

No, you're right. It's not as if terrorists have ever tried to blow up airplanes before.

Wait, that's not right.

Now, if rushed in just before they locked the doors, okay I might buy it. But why let it taxi away from the gate? If he or any possible accomplices had explosives on them they would have had a heads up something was wrong and time to blow it up before getting back to the gate.

Hell of risk, eh? If that's even what happened.

Look at Tim McVeigh, he was able to make a bomb, almost entirely by himself that was capable of taking down an entire building. And all he had was american army training.

Think back to the Oklahoma City bombing.  Do you remember initial reports that a man of Middle Eastern descent was seen running from McVeigh's vehicle?  This was broadcast for about a day or so and then mysteriously went away.  Remember who was in the WH then?  Yeah, Billy Jeff.

Not long ago it came out that McVeigh was in the M.E. for a few months before the OC bombing, and his accomplice that day went on to become well known to FBI folk for terrorist activity.  Some AQ factions claim that OC was the first "successful" attack on US soil.

Ssshhh. If they keep 'splodin' themselves, they'll be doing our job for us.

90 Is it really that hard to make a bomb? What kind of training do they receive in pakistan and afghanistan? are their teachers incompetent? No. I was just a grunt, and off the top of my head I can still remember how to make half-a-dozen field expedient IEDs. None of which require military-grade components. (Eagle fireball, hooah). If you're going to sneak a bomb though airport security and onto a plane, then yes, you need some ingenuity and creativity to devise something that doesn't match the common chemical profile that will alert dogs/sniffers/wipe tests. However. You have the back of an entire SUV to conceal a bomb in and no checkpoints to drive through. Presumably you've had several months of training. No excuse - he's just fucking stupid. Not to mention his exfiltration "plan" of driving his car to the airport and paying cash for a ticket to a Muslim country 72 hours after the attempt. IN THE AIRPORT SERVING THE SAME FUCKING CITY HE JUST TRIED TO BOMB.

Still, questions need to be asked about how a wanted terrorist manage to buy a ticket, presumably a one way ticket to Pakistan and still get on a plane. Did the NYPD/FBI not ask State/TSA to flag it? Or did the breakdown occur in the implementation?

It's not hard to aim and shoot a rifle, either, but jihadis (arabs, in particular) are known to be awful shots - even with lots of training.  And these are people who claim that guns are so much part of their culture (though they haven't had them for very long) that they must shoot in the air to celebrate everything.  But they still suck at shooting.

This is why the arab/persian/muslim world is always shamed (by their own incompetence) and will never stop seeking revenge to alleviate this shame of their own ineptitude and stupidity.  They embarrass themselves and then have to attack us.  It is a cycle that has nothing to do with us.  The only answer to this is to take away the source of their power (political, financial, ...) - the control of the gulf oil fields.  Otherwise, it will be a future of endless attacks from the APM world, just to hide their own embarrassment about being pathetic imbeciles.

In Israel, much dumber terrorists killed lots and lots of people.  And that was with a Shin Bet who had much more freedom in their domestic operations than our FBI has, and with lots of informers in the territories.  They had palestinians eventually resorting to using bulldozers to try and run over people.  Bulldozers!  Now, that is pretty stupid stuff, but it works.  And it is just one more tactic to use.

Even dumb terrorists can wreak amazing damage, and given a number of opportunities, they will.

As to letting this guy on the plane, the cockpit is open as people are boarding and it is entirely possible for a guy to take over the cockpit upon entering the plane and taxiing and taking off (if he is able) or just running the plane around the airport and really causing devastation.

Eventually somebody with more intelligence than the dimwits we've seen so far is going to drive a car into a crowded mall and we're going to be in a world of hurt.

The "bomb" was made out of PVC. It had plastic end caps. I was fairly certain it was bullshit but I was forced to evacuate most of the building and of course hours later, the bomb guys said it was bullshit.

However, the real pain came when I was forced to explain ad nauseum at department and staff meetings in the following days and weeks why I did what I did that fateful day.  It was impossible to please everyone...everyone had some notion of how I behaved rationally or irrationally depending on whether they liked me or not. The highest praise was reserved for pyrotechnics and/or launching heavy objects skyward.

If we could do that for shytes and giggles, at age 14, with only the information you could get from a public library, then no, it's not that hard to make something that would get serious media attention.

The men and women involved counterterrorism in NYC are extremely competent (even if the mayor is a world class douchebag with no understanding of anything other than finance) and have more experience with terrorists than anyone other collection in the US. The NYPD has been busting islamic fundamentalist terrorists regularly for almost 20 years, longer than anyone else.

A voice of reason. Bless you.

159 If they had been a few minutes later they could have ordered the plane to return, land somewhere else or worst case scenario, arrested him in Dubai or when he got off the plane in Pakistan.

Or, they could have thrown him off the plane when it was several thousand feet in the air, thus sparing the taxpayers the expense of an expensive civilian show-trial, wherein this dirt-bag gets to lecture the US about proper respect for the world's largest death cult--something Obama and Holder would prefer.

Just sayin'.

Posted by: Bloomberg at May 04, 2010 08:16 AM (EL+OC)

170 All these years after 9/11, please tell me why we are granting US citizenship to young muslim males from Pakistan!!!!!!

The really screwed up part is that the US had a muslim population of about ZERO for the great bulk of our existence.  It wasn't until the black muslims that we had even a small percent (and most muslims didn't consider black muslims to be muslims) and then, all of a sudden, we started importing muslims like they were going out of style - ramping up after the fall of the USSR (for some insane reason) and stepped up after 9/11.  The Traitor-in-Chief gets away with the ridiculous claim that "muslims have contributed a lot to America", which was patently false and showed how little the imbecile knows about America (in addition to his offensive "America could be considered one of the largest muslim nations").

America seems to be unable to learn this lesson.  The authorities will keep pushing America into the abyss until Americans finally say, "Enough!"  Unfortunately, America will likely split long before that, as the Indonesian Imbecile is pushing this nation to the brink, on purpose, and that is a goal that, given the power he has been handed, even an inept boob like The Precedent can accomplish.  Chaos is easier to generate than order and productivity.

Mark Steyn and my fix:

Whenever something goofy happens — bomb in Times Square, mass shootings at a US military base, etc. — there seem to be two kinds of reactions:

a) Some people go, "Hmm. I wonder if this involves some guy with a name like Mohammed who has e-mails from Yemen."

b) Other people go, "Don't worry, there's no connection to terrorism, and anyway, even if there is, it's all very amateurish, and besides he's most likely an isolated extremist or lone wolf."

Unfortunately, everyone in category (b) seems to work for the government or is in media or Hollywood.

theres another possibility here vis-a-vis the dude getting all the way ONTO the plane before being apprehended...I dont know if this is what authorities were thinking to do, but:

If you let the guy get on the plane he has no where left to hide.

If at any time he's wandering thru the airport or cabbing it around to the airport or whatever, the dude has any number of outs. But if you know that this guy is your guy and you funnel him onto the plane, you place him in a Venus Fly trap from which he cannot emerge.

192 They keep saying that the fertilizer in the SUV wasn't "the kind that explodes", but that might not be quite what you think it means, if they are only saying it wasn't ammonium nitrate. Fox reports it was a sugar-nitrate compound, which means he probably used potassium nitrate. I guess he just pulled some bag stuff labeled potassium nitrate without checking for purity - contaminants mess with the combustion and most of the shelf stuff isn't pure at all, maybe 77% pure. IF he had bought another readily available product at the home depot he wouldn't have had that problem with purity and the potassium nitrate/sugar mixture would have packed a whallup. FWIW, even ammonium nitrate doesn't explode unless set off with something like dynamite, unless it's mixed with fuel (McVeigh used ammonium nitrate mixed with diesel)

Posted by: SarahW at May 04, 2010 09:01 AM (Z4T49)

193 If he DID use pure KN03 and sugar, all they are saying is that the bomb wouldn't have been as bad as a McVeigh bomb, not that it wouldn't have made a big boom.

199 More on the terror plots out of Pakistan.
Pakistani militants 'planning wave of strikes on US' Pakistani militants are planning a wave of strikes against American targets following the failed bombing of Times Square, according to analysts.  By Rob Crilly in Islamabad

Published: 2:39PM BST 04 May 2010

Hakimullah Mehsud, leader of the Pakistan Taliban, calls on supporters to attack US cities in two video messages broadcast at the weekend.

Experts with IntelCenter, which monitors terrorist groups for law enforcement agencies, said the footage suggests that the cells may already be active.

"Messaging analysis and other indicators are increasingly pointing to a high threat of additional strikes utilising the same or varying tactics against a variety of targets, most likely focusing on mass casualties, in the days and weeks ahead," the IntelCenter report concluded, though it said that other scenarios were possible.

Mehsud's group, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the failed bombing of Times Square in New York on Sunday.

IntelCenter concluded that the two subsequent video messages, threatening further strikes without detailing specific targets or dates, had been recorded for use once the first attack had taken place.

"This may have been done because the operational cell(s) on the ground had general timing guidance but were able to set the final execution time based on its readiness and target availability," it said.

However, experts initially dismissed the Taliban's claims of responsibility, questioning whether Mehsud's fighters had the capacity to launch an attack so far from their bases in Pakistan's north-western tribal belt.

Now the arrest of a Pakistani man, Faisal Shahzad, in connection with the Times Square bomb has refocused attention on the TTP and its potential links to jihadi groups with global ambitions.

In particular, some Kashmiri militants disillusioned by what they as see as betrayal by Pakistan security forces are thought to have moved into tribal areas, bringing plans for a global jihad with them.

Talat Massood, a military analyst and former Lieutenant General in the Pakistan army, said: "The disgruntled jihadis are joining hands and using the sanctuary and working against intelligence services and probably linking with al-Qaeda."

Newsbusters.org:

BARACK OBAMA: This incident is another sobering reminder of the times in which we live. Around the world and here at home, there are those who would attack our citizens and who would slaughter innocent men, women and children in pursuit of their murderous agenda. They will stop at nothing to kill and disrupt our way of life, but once again an attempted attack has been [awkward pause] failed.
You just know PBO wanted to say that the attempted attacked had been "stopped" or "thwarted." There was just one little problem . . .

As former anti-terrorism czar Richard Clarke, no conservative ideologue, has observed, the authorities:
would not have been able to have stopped the bomb if it had been wired properly.  Someone was able to drive into New York with what looks like bomb parts, drive right into the heart of Times Square, pull up on the sidewalk, jump up and run away and not get caught.
The feds and local law enforcement apparently did a very good job of apprehending the suspect after the attempted attack.  But they did nothing to "fail" it.  That of course didn't stop PBO from claiming, a bit later in his remarks, that the authorities "may have saved hundreds of lives."

Two questions spring to mind for me, first of all why is he claiming to have been a “lone wolf” when it seems like they are already rounding up other people in conjunction with this attack. And secondly, his house was in foreclosure, but this is curious because I thought part of the Islamic religion was not to be in debt so I thought that typically Muslims who practice Islam do not take out mortgages on their homes. Isn’t that the purpose of Sharia finance?

Also, gee thanks, glad to know that the jihadis in Pakistan are planning a series of attacks in the upcoming weeks. Law of averages says not all of them are going to be idiots and at least one attack will eventually succeed. Of course our government is apparently dismissing this chatter, as they dismissed the fact that the failed bomber could be a jihadist at first because there was no active chatter ahead of Saturday.

More mindless liberal drivel from the lamestream media.  No wonder their ratings are in the toilet:

CNN anchor: "It can confirmed that his house has been foreclosed in recent years. I mean, one would have to imagine that brought a lot of pressure and a lot of heartache on that family."

MSNBC's CONTESSA BREWER (7:06): I mean the thing is is that and I get frustrated and there was part of me that was hoping this was not going to be anybody with ties to any kind of Islamic country because there are a lot of people who want to use this terrorist intent to justify writing off people who believe in a certain way or come from certain countries or whose skin color is a certain way. I mean they use it as justification for really outdated bigotry.

So what religion were you hoping he had, Tess?  Why don't you focus on the REALLY IMPORTANT things, like you did here:

Today MSNBC decided to forego substantive discussion of terrorism and instead focused on the fact that former President Bill Clinton’s sock had slipped and part of his “white” leg was showing during his interview with Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace. The MSNBC host asked her guests, “Is this a travesty or what?”

HOST: Well, people haven’t just been talking about Bill Clinton’s red face in that Fox News interview and all the anger and the finger pointing, but some have been focusing on Clinton’s white legs. The former president showing off a little leg during the sitdown with Chris Wallace. We’re going to show you that, and that’s left some — see, there it is, a little glimpse of leg. Well, how does this happen? … I mean — is this a travesty or what?

Shaheed was screened when he came back to the US from Pakistan. Big sis noted that and added that he "Is a naturalized american citizen" and stopped at that.

Um, he didn't die and it doesn't look like he intended to either. So calling him 'Shaheed' just looks like you really dig this guy.

He's a shitbird. Just leave it at that.

223 Actually the guy planted the bomb in Times Square cause he was p!ssed about all the porno shops and sex shows that got kicked out.

He was also tired of living in a city that was almost destroyed by Democrat progressive policies and policing, cleaned up by a sort of Republican then taken over by a whiny voiced RINO who showed his true colors by turning 'Independent' and is now being a really, really nanny state bitch.  (oh wait, that was me.)

I don't know what this idiots problem was. He's 'cooperating' with the Feds. When are they gonna Mirandize him? The New York chapter of CAIR and the ACLU want to know.

Anyone who played with Estes rockets knows how to gut them for use in all manor of explosive fun.  Stupid or not, he shouldnt have been allowed to get on a plane to make a second attempt.

225 "Allowing a bombing suspect to board a plane full of potential hostages is not exactly what I would call excellent judgment." Hey, if we have to kill a few bystanders so I don't get asked awkward questions at a press conference, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make...

Mayor Bloomberg emails to say, "We are investigating reports this individual was heading to Pakistan, not to escape law enforcement but because he can't stand living in the US now that health care reform has been signed into law".

Heh.  Pakistan is the world headquarters for blue-haired old ladies.
