Times Square Cleared from Suspected Bomb
— Dave in Texas

It's surprising to me this hasn't happened already. (NYT link)

Police officials said they received a report about 6:30 p.m. of smoke coming from a Nissan Pathfinder parked on 45th Street just west of Seventh Avenue. The authorities found a smoking package in the vehicle and now believe it was a bomb. A bomb squad was sent to the scene.

The package did not explode, and officials said they did not know whether it was related to terrorism.

Allow me to help here. It's related to terrorism, because it creates terror.

You're welcome.

Update [Gabe]: Local news, WNBC, is reporting that the police have found three propane & two gasoline tanks, burnt wiring, and "something resembling an IED" inside the vehicle.

I wonder how many of those things need to be planted in Times Square, Malls and non fly over country before the libs join us in reality and realize the world is a dangerous place and we all can't just get along.  That sometimes our soldiers have to kill a lot of bad guys to get their attention.

One would think Sept. 11th would have been enough but Libs seem to need a lot of retraining.

59 Standard MO for an Islamic terrorism.  June, 2007 London:  LINK

The Guardian (excerpt):

Scotland Yard confirmed tonight that a second car bomb had been found in central London close to the first car bomb that was discovered outside a packed nightclub in the early hours.

Senior police and Whitehall sources said that the failed attempt to inflict mass murder in the capital was the work of al-Qaida or those inspired by its ideology.

"You only have to read past cases of those convicted for terrorism to realise they have been plotting to blow up nightclubs and putting gas cylinder bombs in cars," one senior source said.

Counter-terrorism sources said the devices found in two Mercedes cars - which contained gas cylinders, petrol and nails - were similar to car bombs used in Iraq.

That would be horrible, even on a Saturday night families with kids go to the show, it is almost always packed cause it is nice and clean and entertaining.

They are saying that there was a white powder in the car.

Wow, somebody just got in under the wire. As of Memorial Day, the great, the just, the merciful Bloomberg has declared Times Square to be a no-car zone. After that it'll be just satchel charges and bike bombs.

How about a salt & fat bomb, set off by tobacco and anthropogenic carbon? Hey, does the Times still have an office on Times Square? A news stand, maybe?

I really do not care what happens to, or in, New York. I had exactly one friend move there; she died there. I kind of put myself out to help get heavy equipment there after 9/11, and the year hadn't ended before Nyaakers were mocking me us for that. They may now, and for eternity, just kiss my ass.

All big cities everywhere are shitholes, or are about to become shitholes. The task of the rest of us is to feed their gaping, unproductive maw. They get all a-goin' over their art & culture, except 98% of the denizens never go to their much-touted Culture Centres, and when you're done ruling out museums of non-trendy art, which small cities do better, and classical music, which everybody now takes as a joke since it was nationalized (and small cities do better), what you're left with is the newest and gheyest Broadway shows. Keep them, please; consign them if you wish to the dustbin of history. Fie on the goddamn place. They have no use for me or my way of life, nor I for theirs.

Open season, Mahmoud, as far as I give a shit.

Don't forget, the effectiveness of an attack is more directly related to how it dampens society and brings us to a halt.  Our monetary and economic situation is so fragile that a slight disturbance could escalate easily into a full-blown catastrophe.  And everything done in Washington has only made our position even more precarious and sensitive.

Posted by: progressoverpeace at May 01, 2010 08:06 PM (Qp4DT)

89 Hmm.  It's a device.  It's designed to explode.  It's an explosive device!  Today is the Revolutionaries Day, May Day.  A day originally intended to celebrate those guys from yesteryear that threw bombs and Molotov Cocktails.  A car bomb is found in a iconic area of the largest city in the country on May Day, and the MSM won't conclude that it is a terrorist attack.  Do you really think they would be so cautious if a similar device was found on the anniversary of the Murrah Building attack or perhaps Hitler's birthday?

98 #91  Don't forget, the effectiveness of an attack is more directly related to how it dampens society and brings us to a halt.  Our monetary and economic situation is so fragile that a slight disturbance could escalate easily into a full-blown catastrophe.  And everything done in Washington has only made our position even more precarious and sensitive.

So true.  And bio-terrorism would be the easiest and cheapest way to cause such chaos.  It's so damn easy to grow up and make bacterial toxins.

How many times do we expect to keep being lucky and dodging this shit.

About 25 years ago, I heard this story on PBS, believe it or not.  I'll give you the short version.  Remember when military, diplomats and clergymen were being kidnapped in Lebanon?  Three Russian diplomats were kidnapped.  The KGB found one of the kidnappers brothers.  They castrated him and sent his balls to the kidnappers along with the message they could send the rest of him if they wanted.

One of the diplomates was killed.  The other two were released.  There were no more acts of terrorism on Russians for a long time.

Waterboarding is not torture.  Terrorists understand power.  The people who support them understand power.  They also know our government lacks the will to do what is neccessary to keep us safe.

Allah, Hot Air:

What makes me nervous is the use of propane. Remember that London bombing plot three years ago, in which jihadis tried — and failed — to set off a bunch of car bombs around the city?

The car bombs were similar to highly destructive explosives used in Iraq and could have killed hundreds of people, U.S. and British officials told NBC News. British officials warned that the country was facing a “serious and sustained” terrorist threat…

Authorities believe [the first car] was intended to be set off by remote control by a cell phone found inside. The cell phone had received at least two calls, which should have detonated several gallons of gasoline, but when the calls came in, the bomb failed to go off, the official said.

Had it done so, that blast then would have ignited six to eight tanks of propane in a mist to make a fuel-air explosion, creating a fireball the size of a small house and propelling 18 to 20 boxes of roofing nails around a large area at bullet speed, counterterrorism officials said.

Fuel-air bombs are hugely destructive, as this harrowing Danger Room article published after the London plot broke made all too clear. A fuel-air bomb properly detonated in Times Square on a Saturday night likely would have killed hundreds of people. If thatÂ’s what this was — and the feds evidently arenÂ’t sure yet, despite reports of “fireworks” going on in the back seat and someone running away from the vehicle — then thereÂ’s a seriously dangerous individual running around NYC right now. Stay tuned.

147 Why wouldn't it be simply an aborted effort at causing an explosion to a couple of Broadway theater accounting rooms? There were theaters on both sides of the lot -- the Lion King showing on one side, packed as per usual, and on the other side another packed house for latest hit at the Booth Theater -- named after actor/assassin John Wilkes' more thespianically gifted brother Edwin. I'm not saying crime doesn't hold its terrors, but robbing the accounting houses of Broadway hits doesn't qualify as terrorism.

Water in 38 Massachusetts communities, including Boston, is temporarily unsuitable for drinking after a massive break in a pipe that connects the Quabbin Reservoir to Boston. State officials say the break in the 10-foot diameter pipe in Weston is leaking water into the Charles River at a rate of 8 million gallons per hour. The pipe is less than 10 years old. It prolly replaced a pipe that was 200 years old... just sayin'

Until very recently, there was a 300 year old sewer system built by the Dutch running down State St. in Albany NY.  It was working fine, just lacked capacity.

The Dutch put down slate slabs, and oak on each side akin to railroad ties, and another slate slab on top forming a rectangular box.  To tap into it, a plumber would just drill the wood on the side and run a pipe into the slate/wood box.

Sometimes the old shit wasn't so bad...I'm just saying.

There's no reason to suspect terrorism in a water line break. Talk to anybody in civil engineering, and they'll tell you every large water and sewage system in the country is on the ragged edge every day. Simple age, and normal freeze/thaw cycles (not to mention abnormal ones, or the stresses of conservation) set those mains popping off like a Claymore ambush.

Our forefathers, a hundred years back, left us an infrastructure that was the wonder of the world. Then, for most of the century, we took a vacation from engineering history, until every system was overloaded, indispensable, and so poorly maintained that many cities have lost their charts. We've terrorized ourselves on this one. It's a marvel any of them don't break.

And yet, send your typical city a hundred mil in stimulus, and they'll put up a Kidz Kreativity Klub and re-plant the municipal flower garden.

Years ago I was managing a place that practically had to shut down because they came out to lay some new big water pipes. Digging, digging, digging for days and days. Finally, done. Then they had to come back out and redo the whole thing because they'd set the pipes down and they were an inch or so off.

Probably not related to what you said; it just made me think of that.

187 Then they had to come back out and redo the whole thing because they'd set the pipes down and they were an inch or so off.

Only an inch?  Back when the Soviets were first figuring out how to handle building in the permafrost up in Siberia, they were losing buried pipe and wire all the time.  It would have been installed maybe 5' down, then some years later they'd find it 25' down.  Took'em a while to realize that terra-firma ain't all that firma.

Most LPG tanks have over pressure relief valves. So, it more than likely would leak out all the gas. If there was no ignition source(Spark/flame) it probably wouldn't blow.

Na, we just did plenty of experiments while growing up and know what works and what doesn't.  Pretty much every country kid who grew up back in the 50's and 60's played with lots of seriously dangerous shit.  The ones that survived that test went on to build moon rockets, space shuttles, and shit like that.

When I was 10, back in the 60's, I made Molotov cocktails with a friend based on a movie we saw. We threw them into a storm sewer nearby. I've beeen more productive since then.

Anyone know, if the detonator failed if the tanks would have blown up tomorrow anyway in a hot locked car?

Summary of Mythbusters episode, No Pain, No Gain:

The build team tested the myth that a propane tank being stored in a garage became a rocket and soared 150 feet in the air when the garage caught fire. So, will a propane tank turn into a rocket in a fire? I had my doubts about this one. And, as it turns out, under normal circumstances, no it wonÂ’t.

Propane tanks have pressure release valves. After building a shed, filling it with wood, charcoal and gasoline, adding a propane tank and setting the whole thing on fire, the pressure release valve did exactly what it was supposed to do and let the pressure out gradually. No explosion, no rocket. Of course theyÂ’re not going to leave it there.

The team headed back to the workshop to disable the safety relief valve to simulate an old tank with a broken valve. Back at the bomb range they heat the modified tank over a fire and after 10 minutes the tank exploded. But, still no rocket.

Ohh, get the fuck out. Who writes this crap up? "Counter-terrorism officials" is a pseudonym for mentally fucking retarded, eh?

A propane tank will, given a ridiculous energy input, burst and not in a way conductive toward creating a proper oxygenated mist. It will not create a fireball. The overpressure could be used for fragmentary effects, but it's impractical (small yield, large triggering charge and big physical size) and definitely bush-league.

The Statue of Liberty is, and it wasn't very far away. Did they really need to attack both towers? Weren't there other, better targets around (in DC say?). It would immediately discredit the Tea Party movement.  And immediately change the narrative that Muslims are terrorists.

273 I can testify from personal experience what happens to a propane tank sufficiently heated (and melted).

Some friends of mine have a camp-out once a year in a place where there's absolutely nothing that can be damaged for hundreds of yards in any direction.

One year, we built a mound of about a ton of thermite, with a charged propane tank buried in it.

Then we backed off about 200 yards and lit off the thermite. After about 10 minutes, the tank melted and ruptured, releasing a huge cloud of propane, which being in contact with burning thermite ignited nicely. The resulting fireball was about 15 meters high; there was no bang.

Why in the world of us does NYC still allow parking in Times Square?  Wouldn't the traffic alone preclude parking there much less the danger of this kind of shit.

They (especially the MSM) pick up on popular words and they recycle them.  My personal most hated word they use is horrific.  Their vocabulary, among anything else generated by their brains and spewed out of their mouths, is unoriginal and parroted.

The location is also adjacent to the Viacom building, fuelling speculation that it might be linked to the company's controversial South Park cartoon which recently depicted Prophet Muhammad in a bear suit.

Has any American news organization made this connection? Or do we once again have to rely on the British press.

Not a chance.  Propane tanks in a fire might - might - create a BLEVE, which will make a big fireball and while there is nothing good about that it is a far cry from an FAE.

Real thermobarics need a high order explosive to create the proper dispesion of vapor and air before secondary detonation can occur (and getting that to occur at just the right moment is damn sophisticated.)  This was not a homemade daisy cutter because there is no such thing.  If you can make an FAE at home it means you already have access to real explosives.

This bomb design does not work, yet people keep using it. Why?

I would not call some propane cylinders in a car a "fuel air explosive." That's not even close to being  a real fuel-air bomb. A true fuel air detonation is a technically tricky thing to arrange, and whoever did this can't even figure out how to ignite a gas can.

Even if the propane cylinders had ignited, it would just be an incendiary device.

I mention once again - repeated attempts using the same design, even though it doesn't work. Why?

303 Chez Spellcheck is a half-block west of this little adventure, so I wasn't able to return to my apartment last night. I sought refuge elsewhere. Fringe benefits ensued.

This is steps away from where a street vendor shot it out with cops around Christmastime. He jammed his automatic with stupid gangsta posing, so the firefight was short-lived.

There's no stopping or parking on southbound Seventh Avenue, and that stretch of Broadway is closed to traffic to create a pedestrian mall with lots of chairs and cafe tables. The east-west cross streets are all open to auto traffic, but street parking is for commercial service vehicles only. A vehicle without commercial tags would be quickly towed on a weekend night. That stretch of 45th hosts eight theaters and a huge hotel, so the block is kept clear for loading/unloading of cabs, tour buses, airport shuttles and the like. The MTV studio where Total Request Live was shot is right above the Lion King theater, as are the offices for all the Viacom networks. The Manhattan outlet of Junior's famous restaurant is a few steps away, and a Starbucks under the Marriott hotel.

Fox and Red Eye are on Sixth Avenue at 47th or 48th, nearer to Rockefeller Center and (psychologically) miles away from Times Square.

ABC's Nightline/Good Morning America studios are a block south at 44th and Broadway. You couldn't see the Nissan from their windows, but they'd have a good view of the police lines.

God of Carnage, BTW, is a romantic dramedy with two couples including Lucy Liu and Jeff Daniels. By Yasmina Reza, whose origins are Iranian.  IIRC.

313 So I'm flipping through the talking head shows, reading the news sites, etc. and everyone seems to agree that since the bomb didn't go off, there's a ton of forensic/identifying evidence at the scene. Makes sense that you might not wipe down a car you think is going to be turned into a fireball. Anyway, since we know all this, and the terrorist knows we know all this, I have to wonder what he's doing right now. Unless he's a total specter, completely unknown to the Government, then he must be feeling pretty desperate. Here's hoping he doesn't have a "go out with a bang" Plan B. Barring a shootout, I'm wondering if the first big press conference we see (unless I've missed one already) will come after he's in custody. At the very least I expect that they'll be able to give us a name, picture, etc. pretty soon.

good news - real explosives are apparently pretty hard to come by in this country.

Guess again.  Nevermind cooking up things like peroxides, there are many, many other suitable alternatives available.  Back the days of BBSs there was plenty of information freely available.  It's not nearly as in your face now, but it does not take a whole lot of searching around to find some of it.  If you can figure out how to cook meth, and obtain suitable components then you can easily make your own primary explosives.

Thankfully the people doing these things are well and truly retarded.

Have you ever seen the big propane tanks out in the country, that run everything in a house?

They have a relief value on the top, round, looks like a nipple on a long hot dog.  I came upon a house fire in the country that the fireman were unable to put out so they were watching.  That tank got hot and the relief value did what it was suppose to do, blow off.  The propane lit up like a Saturn Rocket, and the flame was a good 200 feet in the air.

Even my lib/dem friends are saying "WTF" about how he behaves.  Presidential is presidential, respecting the office is respecting the office.  People are silently uncomfortable with the f word coming out of a president in front of 3,000 people at a dinner.  And, he is in his late 40's early 50's so really he should know better instead he is trying to project "young and hip" and where is that getting our country?

So if the Times Square car was owned by Nidal Hassan Jr., how long will they try to hide the identity like they did at Ft. Hood?

There was pasta in the microwave? I assume there was more to it than that, but if not that is kind of funny. I mean who puts a microwave on a sidewalk with pasta in it? One of the runners that wants a mid run carb boost? And where did they plug it in?

Chez Spellcheck is a half-block west of this little adventure, so I wasn't able to return to my apartment last night. I sought refuge elsewhere. Fringe benefits ensued.

Ms.Spellcheck, Please inform as to when you are ready for your second De-Briefing on said event.  Our office eagerly awaits your report and any shared intel, therein.

.FWIW, the car bomb had stolen plates and the VIN was gone. There will be identifiers though....unless the car was build with scrapped parts through and through. Terrorists just aren't that skilled...the crap they make is crap, even the Kazinsky stuff was amatuer hour.

Getting caught up here....

So the t-shirt guy alerts the cops and they run around the smoking SUV, then move people back and call the fire dept.  NYFD arrives and deploys a robot....

And the reason this didn't immediately turn into a deadly explosion is.... what?  Because it didn't go off?  Because these bastards don't know how to properly set bombs in shoes/underwear/cars?

Oh dear God.

I just had the most entertaining 30 minutes reading through the comments.  Leno and BO could learn a LOT about comedy reading these.  Thanks everyone!
