Today Is The 17th Anniversary Of Operation Gothic Serpent
— DrewM

"Gothic Serpent" may not ring a bell but the book and movie based on it will...Blackhawk Down.

Jonn Lilyea emailed me the reminder and has a remembrance of a friend he lost that day, Master Sergeant Tim “Griz” Martin (Delta Force) at This Ain't Hell.

Though I suppose a lot of fights could claim the title of the first battle of the current war on terror (or whatever Obama renamed it), we should never forget that one Osama bin Laden watched and learned from our Somalia withdrawal after this battle.

America assumed the titles of world leader and master of the new world order. After a few blows, it forgot all about those titles and rushed out of Somalia in shame and disgrace, dragging the bodies of its soldiers. America stopped calling itself world leader and master of the new world order, and its politicians realized that those titles were too big for them and that they were unworthy of them. I was in Sudan when this happened. I was very happy to learn of that great defeat that America suffered, so was every Muslim. ...

The lessons he drew from that ill fated day and intervention only applied to the leadership of the time. Bin Laden would soon come to find out that a new American President wouldn't be so easily pushed around and that the fighting skill shown that day in Somalia by American forces (2 were awarded the Medal of Honor) would infuse a whole new generation of American servicemen and women committed to the fight.

While thousands have since died in battlefields around the world in this same war, we should never forget the 19 Americans, including Master Sergeant Martin, who died that day.

Since this is getting so much air time all over the MFM, and since it's not nice to focus on the immoderate muslims alone, you all are probably already tired of it, but just in case you just enjoy boring yourselves with innocuous, heavily reported news, read about BarryÂ’s peace loving moderate Islamic friends enjoying the attention of American law enforcement.

5 ... we should never forget the lesson one Osama bin Laden took from our withdrawal from Somalia not long after this battle. In reading cold war histories one of the biggest events, in the eyes of the Soviets, was when Congress defunded South Vietnam in 1975 - allowing the North to win the war. That the US would allow an ally to lose a war of survival had been beyond the Soviet's comprehension. That was when they realized there was a willpower problem with the US. Before South Vietnam fell, the Sovs were fighting the cold war. Afterwards, they were fighting with the expectation of winning it*. (Notice how froggy they got between 1975 and 1981). Osama learned the same lesson from Somalia. *That's according to memoirs of Soviet spooks.

May there be a place in the hottest part of hell awaiting Prissypants. And as the mom of one of those young men, I hope he never sleeps a single night, that he dies with the ghosts of those he sent off to war and forgot. He's a heartless bastard. I hope for the rest of his days, he's haunted by the ghosts of those he wasn't worthy to lead. He and his nasty, trashy wife.

Maybe when the adults are returned to power, we can actually get serious about winning this war against radical islam and fix the ROE to let the fighting forces crush the enemy. We should also start executing terrorists, eventually they'll get the message. We also need to point out that they're using civilians as shields every time we find it. Cram it down the throats of every "human rights" group every day and ask why they are silent.

We've tried being nice. All that did was invite more attacks. We need to send a message that we absolutely, positively will not tolerate their bullshit any longer: attack us and you die. Plain and simple. And stop the "you just create more terrorists" crap. Really? Good, send more and see what happens to them.

I've never seen such a bunch of pussies in all my life as the ones trying to prosecute this war. We still haven't heard the word "victory" from The Vapid One® yet.

Shame on Bill Clinton and shame on our military brass that left men to die. I haven't been able to watch Blackhawk Down because to me it is more than a movie. It's a portrayal of the betrayal of good men by the political hacks both in and out of the service. I'm pretty well assured I can dance and spit on Jimmy Carter's grave. With any luck, I can do the same on Bill Clinton's.

Ever watch the assholes in the presidency salute a soldier or Marine. You can tell they don't have a clue. There is no respect there. That's how they could leave men behind. They don't understand. The serviceman salutes the rank and office but there is something more in it if he respects the recipient. Carter, Clinton and Obama will never feel and understand this.

Amen, a fantastic book. I was at a conference last week and Michael Durant was the speaker on Wednesday. He said that we should have sent armor to accomplish the mission, not helicopters. AC-130 Spectres and M1-A1 tanks. During the photo op after I said "Clinton said that the armor would be too offensive didn't he?" He said "yes but I didn't want to use any names." You could see the pain of losing the men in his Blackhawk. It was a great talk by a great man.

The book shows the unbelievable determination of those men. The little bird pilots and the Delta operators are amazing.

And Clinton decided it was a good idea to let 10,000 Somalis into America right after that why, exactly? Was it because life would be more exciting wondering how many Somali "Americans" would become terrorists?

I still say we should demolish one of theirs for every attempt at something of ours. After Mogadishu, it should have been an ashtray. Somalia should have been no more. Same for Yeman after the Cole. Every embassy bombing, every place bombed that held American citizens or military should have been answered by destroying something of theirs. After 9/11, there should have been no more Afgan-ass-tan.

Of course, I really wonder if we would have had a 9/11, if we had had the balls to do what needed to be done the first time the fuckers tried to take us on.

Yeah, I'm sick of the fuckers. When the hell are we going to say enough? 1000s of theirs are not worth one member of our brave military, and I won't apologize for feeling that way. Fuck 'em.

"...But your most disgraceful case was in Somalia; where- after vigorous propaganda about the power of the USA and its post cold war leadership of the new world order- you moved tens of thousands of international force, including twenty eight thousands American solders into Somalia. However, when tens of your solders were killed in minor battles and one American Pilot was dragged in the streets of Mogadishu you left the area carrying disappointment, humiliation, defeat and your dead with you. Clinton appeared in front of the whole world threatening and promising revenge , but these threats were merely a preparation for withdrawal. You have been disgraced by Allah and you withdrew; the extent of your impotence and weaknesses became very clear. It was a pleasure for the "heart" of every Muslim and a remedy to the "chests" of believing nations to see you defeated in the three Islamic cities of Beirut , Aden and Mogadishu..."

-- from Bin Laden's 1996 fatwa

So from the horse's mouth, calling Clinton out by name, withdrawal from Somalia emboldened the global jihad. What did Clinton do from 1996-2001? Depleted our cruise missile stockpile on empty tents.

Dan Band had a concert Friday night in Beaufort, SC (Parris Island is 7 miles away). We didn't make it Friday, but went to the Shrimp Festival yesterday. The Semper Fi Fund was there collecting money for injured Marines (and we of course donated). Also, Sinese had Lt. Dan Weekend t-shirts for sale to benefit wounded veterans. We bought two, one for D'oh and one for his best bud.

An article in today's paper about the event has a heart-wrenching quote from one of the 50 families who had their travel and expenses paid for by Sinese's group:

Her son was a combat medic with the 82nd Airborne when he was shot in the stomach in 2003 in Iraq. He lost his spleen, most of his intestines and 90 percent of his stomach. A stroke during his recovery left him needing a wheelchair and around-the-clock care.

"It's like having a 170-pound newborn, but it's so important that Alan have these relationships and have these goals" said his mother, Rosie Babin about their trip to Beaufort.

God bless that sweet mom and dad and their beloved boy.

They set up the Marines in Beirut with a giant target on them then turned tail and ran away, worse still they saved Arafat and the PLO from joining the ranks of the deservedly extinguished.

70 nevergiveup, I told Delta Smelt earlier (he's in the SC area) I'll get an e-mail that's not my actual name, as I have now. I'd love any morons/ettes to get in touch with me. D'oh and I are always up for a party, cookout, you name it. Seriously.

Heh. Eventually, we might actually rival the northeast moron meetups. Maybe not in number of attendees, or hobos, but way more fun!

75 I've been saying for twenty years (yes, well before the WTC attack) that this is not by any means a recent conflict. Some people draw a distinction between Sep 10th people and Sep 11th people. I'm an October 10th person. That is as in October 10th 732 AD. The Battle of Tours. The high-watermark (so far) of expansionist Islam in continental Europe. They were only 150 miles from Paris when Charlie the Hammer butchered their army and killed their leader. Gibbon said were it not for Tours, Oxford's dreaming spires might have been minarets. Creasy listed it in his compendium of decisive battles. It is worth noting a) how soon after Mohammed's birth the barbarians had decided to make Europe their demesne b) how long after kicking the shit out of them in France it took us to finally rid ourselves of them. There is a longer lapse of time between Tours and the Reconquista than between the Reconquista and the present day.

We have been fighting these bloodthirsty thugs for 1400 years. The psychotic ideology has spread - like blood poisoning - from a fly-blown desert hellhole to all corners of the globe. The Middle East. The Far East. Europe. There are enclaves of howling Mohammedans in the highlands of South America, for God's sake. Everywhere Islam has trod it has brought forth destruction, desuetude and death. The Mughal invasion of India is popularly reckoned to have cost eighty million lives. A million (mostly, but by no means all, Mediterranean) Europeans were abducted by Arab slavers, to enter a life of incomprehensible barbarity (males were routinely castrated, females were sold into that most abject sexual slavery that is today still a hallmark of Mohammedanism.) Miguel Cervantes fought in the Battle of Lepanto to free slaves held in the galleys of the despicable Ottoman Empire, and this was the sixteenth century. This is not a new fight, nor will it go away if we ignore it.

Religion of Peace? Like hell.

Oh, and another Sep 11th? 1683, when Jan Sobieski relieved the Siege of Vienna. Not a new conflict, not at all.

77 @77: obviously, what we need is add a token Muzzie to the all the commercials out there with that feature 2 or more actors, each of which must invariably be of a different ethnic group. You know, alongside the token Asian and the Token Black and the Token Hispanic, we need one Token Jihadi.

That will make everything better.

Well if we cant kill all the muslims off (and Im pretty sure we cant)

Maybe we could send some department stores over to the middle east to commercilize the crap out of Rhamadon.

There would be nothing like a Macys Rhamadon parade in Mecca to warm the hearts of muslim extremist.

and maybe we can send Hallmark over to write some Rhamadon greeting cards like

" I hope "Jihad" a Happy Rhamadon"

On a serious note

I think we took the wrong side of the Kosovo issue.

I think that was the turning point for Osama and the rest of the extremist

because it was at that point they realized they could dupe the american media into fighting thier cause for them.

85 How is this for a lesson: the people we were fighting AGAINST then are the same ones that we are SUPPORTING now as the so called "Transitional Government" the last I heard the grandson of the man whose attempted kidnapping/abduction was the reason for Blackhawk Down is the Minister of Defense of the Transitional Government. Maybe it is time the USA started thinking more than one move ahead. It is just like that in Afghanistan where the radical islamists that we supported when they were fighting the Russians are now killing us. Oh yeah, and in Iraq al Sadr whose militia killed more Americans than any other group is now going to determine who forms the next government in Iraq

Do you know one the main reason for so many casualties was that Clinton disallowed any of our top of the line armored vehicles in Somalia, because of the so called "signal" that would send, whatever the fuck that meant.

So many of the casualties were incurred by relief columns of Humvees dashing through narrow corridors of death getting fired upon from the sides and from the rooftops. What sort of damage could anything the Somalis possesed have done to an M-1 tank along these same streets. And how long would a makeshift Somali barricade have impeded the course of a 70 ton tank going 40 miles an hour.

Six M-1 tanks could have arrived on the scene in 20 minutes and formed an impenetrable defensive perimeter until an air evacuation or a ceasfire could have been effected. I pin the responsibility for 75% of the casualties on that one pusilanimous, preciously PC decision alone

90 Peter Dragon: A-fuckin-men. Pussy Washington-based ROE's got more of the guys killed than anything. And if you've read Mark Bowden's book you will see the extent to which any UN-backed operation is a clusterfuck waiting to happen. Can you imagine being Delta or SEAL and knowing it's fucking Malaysians are your backstop (not saying their individual soldiers aren't brave, and they lost a guy in the exfil, but seriously, folks, that's like picking the fat kid with one permanently blocked nostril to be on your volleyball team.)

Of course, psychotic dickhead that he is (was?),Osama bin Laden took away entirely the wrong message. What he saw was an American tactical unit getting ambushed and withdrawing under fire. What he failed to notice was we inflicted 1500 fatal casualties on his gang of shoeless cretins after losing fewer than two dozen of our own, and a large majority of the Skinnies were killed in the attempt to retrieve the corpses of our boys. You can sit in a cave alternately humping goats and eating them for a million years but as long as the casualty ratio is 100:1 in our favour DURING AN EXTRACTION (never mind if we're really gunning for you during the kinetic phase of an operation) then we're winning, you crazy fuckstick. At that rate, you'll run out of Jihadists long before we run out of Marines. You can shoot up a supermarket. We can melt your cities.

91 "The lessons he drew from that ill fated day and intervention only applied to the leadership of the time." Says who? We aren't stopping the Iranians from making their bombs. We aren't stopping the Saudis from spreading the oil money we pay them to sharia schools throughout Europe and North America, and bomb-making schools everywhere else. We aren't trying to win the war in Afghanistan, we're fighting to protect and safeguard a nation of boy-sodomizers. We fought in Iraq to make the place safe for Islam - the remaining Christian and Jewish populations have pretty much left, now that it's all democratic and the imams can enforce their fatwas that much more directly. And when one man goes to exercise his First Amendment rights, the commanding general of our army is joined by all of polite society in pressuring him not to, in the name of COWARDICE. Bottom line, we didn't start tossing nukes by the end of September '01, which would have been the only appropriate response to this brutal savage war that has been waged against civilization by these desert savages for the past 1400 years. Bin Laden was absolutely right, and you are absolutely wrong, and the final bill has yet to be paid.

92 I have the greatest respect for the US Military! I was a US Marine for 20 years. I salute the fallen of Black Hawk Down. This is a reality check, the loss of 19 Americans as opposed to the 500 to 700 enemy killed is NOT a defeat! It is a decisive victory. The only mark against this victory is the stupid decisions that put our troops into that situation. They were outnumbered by at least 10 to 1. If you go to fight a war you must be there to win decisively, commit overwhelming force to end the battle decisively, you cannot be concerned about international opinion, that costs more lives on both sides.

93 In Somalia, like Afghanistan, we were there to help the people. We should not be in the Muslim world "helping" people. We should be killing bad people and scaring the bystanders. In and out. The only hearts and minds involved should be the body parts of bad guys.

We never should have gone to Somalia, because we had no national interest there. We should not necessarily go everywhere on earth that people hate us to scare them or kill them or make them fear us; most of them are completely impotent. No planes, no aircraft carriers, no power project capacity. They can hate us, but they can't hurt us.

Every single 9/11 terrorist came in this country on a visa of some kind; we are letting the bad guys in the front door. Without permanent garrisons in the Middle East and an open door immigration policy, there is very little the Muslims can do to hurt us. I salute the brave men of the Rangers and Special Forces and other forces in Somalia, but the mission was a moronic "humanitarian" intervention in a volatile uncivilized shithole. The only lesson learned to me is that small operations require bigger ones and revenge operations and permanent occupations and grow out of control until we're on the ground ten years in some third world dump. In the alternative, we can avoid all the fuss by never setting foot in these shitholes to begin with or bombing the hell out of them to keep them in line--a la Libya 1986. Better that than interminable and inconclusive ten year wars like we're concluding in Iraq. In five or ten years, does anyone doubt these people will have coups and terrorists and all kinds of other chaos, all in spite of our efforts.

PS I love Reagan, but don't forget he yanked us from the ill conceived Lebanon occupation in '83. So this is not just a Democratic disease, as much as I loathe Clinton. Once again, we should not have been in Lebanon--assisting the evacuation of the PLO no less--and generally should bud out of 99% of the world's shitholes and their endless conflicts. If they need to be whacked, do so quckly and get out. The nation-building humanitarian shit is stupid and wins us fewer friends than it creates new enemies.

Many spot-on comments here. The main point today should be about the many American Warriors that fought that day and the absolutely heroic (epic even) things they did that day.

18 men, all better than I, made the ultimate sacrifice that day and that's what we need to remember for today. Recriminations can ALWAYS be made tomorrow.

If you haven't read "In The Company Of Heroes" by Mike Durant, you should. What happened that day needs to be remembered and memorialized.
Forever.

96 What boggles my mind is that in the midst of this war, our american voters decided to vote with the enemy. Electing obama the appeaser is tantamount to, in WWII, electing joe kennedy, the nazi appeaser, to be president.
Our voters need to be educated on how the muslims enslaved their area of the world centuries ago, what their present day mission is, and decide once and for all.....will America stand and fight or will it submit. If the voters decide we must submit (and their vote for obama indicates that)then bring our soldiers home.

I was in the unit that was the armor support for Somalia at the time (being in the 3rd Brigade of the 24th Division, which was in the XVIIIth Airborne Corp's DRF rotation). My vehicles and troops were on the pad in Fort Benning, Ga. The units in Somalia depended on Pakistani armor for support.

Not to mention all the armored vehicles with greater armor protection from small arms between the Humvee and the M1A1. Just the old Vietnam-era M113s would have saved the day, having thin plate armor. The 'up-armored' Humvee, of course, was a few wars away in 1993.

Apparently the "no tanks" rule applied to APCs as well. Typical leftist moonbat idiocy, like semi-automatic rifles being machine guns or something. Les Aspin, proud moonbat.
