— Ace In the GOP primary to fill the "Barack Obama seat."
Recent polls have Kirk easily swamping newcomer Hughes. Based on this... Kirk is... well, very meh, but this is Illinois.
One of the most liberal states in the union.
At least he has recanted his cap and trade vote.
More: Geraghty agrees with McCormack -- meh, but would be great to steal "Barack Obama's seat."
On the Other Hand... GOP gubernatorial hopeful Adam Andrzejewski seems like a stalwart, and might ride a Tea Party surge to the nomination.

Rule 1: In primary, Real Republican over RINO.
Rule 2: In general, ANY Republican over Commiecrat.
NY-23 was unique and primary-less.

Ok, it took a chick who played on Star Trek Voyager to catapult Obama into his Senate seat and then the presidency and now a GOPer with the last name Kirk most likely will get the seat he once occupied.

I live in Kirks district and in the primary he will NOT get my vote based on the cap and trade fiasco. If he gets the nomination I might hold my nose and vote for him because there is only one thing I hate worse than a RINO, and thats a democrat. It would look good at least on paper to have an R-IL in the senate.
FYI, its Patrick Hughes not Paul Hughes

Slightly O/T but funny, Arlen Spector gets on stage interrupting Joe Seastak at a Democrat conference. They were supposed to do separate Q & A's but Spector can't help himself. (It is funny when the moderator makes him take a seat with Spector pointing at his watch like "Joe's gone over time, it's my turn now." Too funny! I think Spector is going to lose the primary and hopefully get beaten like a bongo drum by Toomey. Here's the link to the vid:

OK, Kirk will win, but I'll wager the final tally is a lot closer than "the polls". Hughes came late to the party, but he's establishing name recognition, should he tackle this again.

Against Obama who somehow got Ryan's divorce records unsealed, against the pleadings of both Ryans...which led to Ryan dropping out of the race. (Which, I think, left no one else on the ballot, right?)
OT:
From Pravda no less. Unbelievable...
It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people.
snip~
The final collapse has come with the election of Barack Obama. His speed in the past three months has been truly impressive. His spending and money printing has been a record setting, not just in America's short history but in the world. If this keeps up for more then another year, and there is no sign that it will not, America at best will resemble the Wiemar Republic and at worst Zimbabwe.

OTOH, the support for Andrzejewski seems, according to my IL sources stronger than the polls may show, especially among likely voters and especially among voters motivated by the Tea Parties.
Quincy, IL is not big (40,000+ with perhaps another 20,000 in the rest of Adams county) but he went over very big there, according to my sources, and energized a great many.
I wouldn't be surprised. if he pulled out a narrow win. If that's the case, he has a real shot in November.

We're back to splitting IL into two states, each with appropriate number of House seats and two senators, so downstate has some representation at a national level.

Fantastic timing, though, wasn't it? I mean, if someone's going to embrace Warmerism and Obama-worship and abandon anti-Islamicism, doing so right before Climategate, the failure of Obamacare, the release of a budget with a $1.6 trillion deficit, and the Pantybomber (not to mention Obama trying to send KSM to New York City) seems like karmic justice. I wouldn't be surprised if the resultant cognitive dissonance caused a nervous breakdown, or a stroke.

Because Illinois election judges like to be out at 5:00 in the morning in the snow.
Ace, I really hope your wrong about tomorrow's outcome. A Kirk win means that that Dems hold the seat, especially if this guy Hoffman (who is not so obviously mobbed up as Gianoullias) wins. I get what you and DrewM are always on about taking what you can get, but the truth is conservative voters in Illinois, and I talk to quite a few, will not support Kirk.
He voted for Cap and Trade when he knew he aould be running for a Senate seat this year, and when he thought he'd be running in an empty primary, so his recant now cannot be trusted. He voted against the surge, so he is a disaster on national defense. He's a gun grabber and pro-abortion (the later being what dooms him-we simply will not let the babykillers get ahead in the national party if we can stop them). He is literally opposed to conservatives on every issue. It will not be hard at all for any Dem to run to his right on something and give us the rationale to vote for them.
That being said, an argument could be made for supporting him in the fall if one more Senator would give us control of the Senate, but even then, based on my conversations (and I really have been suggesting that to folks), that's a steep uphill climb.
BTW, this context suggests to me I might apologize for being a pain in the ass to you all the time. We really do have a fairly specific problem here in Illinois of the party establishment being at permanent cross purposes with the voters with all the success that entails (you can count statewide elected Republicans on no hands). I'm represented on the Cook County board by Tony Peraica, who's pretty much the only honest man in the party ranks and our constant fights with the corruption across both parties pretty strongly colors my view of the purity arguments. So, sorry.

Strange things can happen in Illinois primaries because voters there do not register by party affiliation. Both party regulars and pollsters often have problems figuring out who is going to show up and take a Republican ballot.
I'd watch for two trends. 1) A huge increase in statewide Republican turnout to levels not seen since the 1990s because of dissatidfaction with Chicago Democrat's domination of the state. High turnout may not favor candidates whose political activity dates from before 2002 - Kirk, Ryan, Dillard, McKenna and Topinka.
2) Unexpected Republican turnout among the Poles in the greater Chicago area. Andrejewski has the potential to brings new voters into the primary. The real wild card is how they are going to vote in the rest of the races on the ballot.

What Dem supermajority? The one that ends as soon as what's-his-name from MA is seated? That situation has changed-we are no longer desperate to break up their 60 seats and this is not a one-off special election. In November, we're going to pick up the House comfortably and a bunch of Senate seats. If we're set to pick up four or five there's no argument for voting for Kirk as he'll be the first guy to vote with the Dems on anything because 'he has to represent the voters of Chicago.' If we're getting 12 (and who knows, if those polls putting WI and WA in play are right) or more, there is again no point in supporting the clod. No one around here even wants to hear that-Kirk (and the GOP establishment) is just that toxic. I noted one other Proft vote above-he's running on slashing taxes and spending like Indiana, but mainly against the state Republican party. That's where we are in Illinois.

Oh good grief, speaking of celebrities, there's going to be a remake of "We are the World" for Haiti relief. I feel like these celebutard musicians should stop being so cheap and lazy and reach into their own deep pockets to donate money directly to the cause. How much money is it going to cost to fly all these idiots to the same recording studio and what is their carbon footprint going to be? And I'm calling them out for being lazy because they can't be bothered to come up a new song, just re-singing the same old, tired tune. From Hotair:
LOS ANGELES – Twenty-five years after star-studded anthem "We Are the World" raised millions of dollars to aid famine relief in Africa, celebrities of a different generation were set to gather Monday night to re-record the charity tune to benefit Haiti.
Among those scheduled to perform on the revamped track the night after the Grammy Awards were Akon, Jason Mraz, Bono, Wyclef Jean, Carlos Santana, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Toni Braxton and Lady Gaga. The session will be held at the same recording studio where the original was cut — the historic A&M complex in Hollywood.
Quincy Jones, who produced the 1985 anthem, announced last week that he planned to redo the song to benefit recovery from the deadly Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.

any politician, regardless of party, that has voted in any way for the ridiculous spending under this administration does not deserve to be voted back into office. any politician that supported crap-pot legislation such as crap n trade is not worthy of serving in congress. kirk is a jerk, and is not good for this country. period. i'd rather eat glass then vote for that schmuck mark mirk.

Okay, I found this about Rand Paul. Clearly he's discussed politics with his Dad plenty of times. But a quick perusal of his issues page looks like what the Conservatives are always yammering about.
Of course, over at freeper-ville, he's evidently not pro-life-y enough for the reeeel, "real" pro lifers. I guess letting the states decide, as the founders intended, is not good enough for them.
The reeely "real" Conservatives are leaving Sarah Palin's bandwagon in droves. And by droves, I mean in upwards of the high hundreds. I think her bandwagon can take the loss.

I lived on the far Northwest side for three years while I was in law school because it was cheaper rent than on the lakefront and safe for commuting late at night. The Ward I lived in even had a Republican alderman for a couple of terms. A lot of the area Poles voted Republican in the general election but wouldn't take a Republican primary ballot because they worried their garbage wouldn't be picked up or their street plowed. Bringing in Walesa is aimed at getting these voters to take a Republican ballot.

Most of the hand-wringing at FR over it seemed to be coming from one or two guys.

Hmmm. I didn't count, so I'll go with your read on it. But I did see an a$$load of angry replies to a small number of posts who were (sort of) defending Palin's endorsement. Of course, they have a lot of Ron Paul supporters posting there, and maybe that's who was getting hammered. I try not to lurk long there because I can only laugh so long before needing a breather.

I looked again. ol_dirty_/b+/tard was correct-o. Some guy is spamming the hell outta the threads by claiming all sorts of wacky stuff.
Reminds me of a dood I argued with for months once back in 2003, who claimed he was a "real conservative" because he was so pro life that he was against the Iraq war because Bush should have gone to war against abortionists first, or something.

Ok, it took a chick who played on Star Trek Voyager to catapult Obama into his Senate seat and then the presidency and now a GOPer with the last name Kirk most likely will get the seat he once occupied.
Am I the only one seeing this
I see that Mike Ditka's reluctance birthed Obama as POTUS. That Borg chick with the impressive ta-ta's was part of the conspiracy.
She listed her hobbies as sucking the chrome off a trailer hitch, blowing Senate candidates and their chances for a seat, and macrame

The freepers deserting Palin doesn't surprise me one bit. It's my opinion that Free Republic has been infiltrated by moles who take ultra-right positions in order to stir up dissatisfaction with good candidates.
I have seen this pattern repeated ever since 2000, when the owner of the site visciously attacked Bush and only supported him after he won the primaries. The pattern was repeated with Guliani, Romney, and now Palin.
For these people no one is ever good enough, and they stir up discontent and division. Weak-minded people tend to follow these disruptors.
They also were the ones who stirred up the anti-Bush sentiment among Republicans during the second term. I may be too suspicious, but I never ran into anyone who was as virulent about Republicans as those people on FR, and I live in the most conservative district in Indiana.

Exactly. He'd make it much easier for anti-Kirk conservatives to crossover.

Yeah, he's a RINO, but compared to Roland Burris or Dick Durbin, he's like the feral love child of Ayn Rand and Curtis R. LeMay.

63 Adam Ant will be a disaster as general candidate. Yesterday he was caught out not knowing how many Republicans were in the General Assembly, or even how many seats there are in both chambers. He also looks like Howdy Doody.
And Adam Ant sounds exactly like, Adam Ant!!! Nice guy, but no pipes. He could have a career voicing cartoon characters.
81 vote Dillard if you are choosing from the status quo.
NOOOO! Do not vote for Dillard! He cut a TV commercial for Obama in the 2008 presidential election! How can he even call himself a republican??!!!
I live in Kirk's IL-10 district. IT IS A VERY LIBERAL DISTRICT. The choices in this district are squish republican or hard leftist. Right next door in IL-9 is Jan Schakowsky. She is Nancy Pelosi's best girlfriend in the House. Mark Kirk is surprisingly conservative for being in such a blue district in a blue state. The voters in IL-10 are my neighbors, those of us who are conservative or republican discuss politics in safe houses. The local high school has over 4,000 kids, you know how many of them are in the republican club? 9. That's right, 9. Meantime, the young democrats have a full house, as does the aclu club, and all sorts of social justice organizations. (social justice is code for socialism/communism)
Pat Hughes record shows that he hasn't voted in years! Go Kirk!

Kirk for senate and Proft for governor tomorrow for me. And it is a strong proud vote that I will cast for each of them. Different races and different circumstances but both are excellent candidates. I yelled at Kirk about the cap,and trade vote but if you read the Weekly Standard article Ace linked above in which Kirk explains it, you will better understand the tightrope he was walking with that vote in his district. I absolutely guarantee he will not vote for cap and trade when he is in Washington as the junior senator from Illinois.
Oh, and the primary is tomorrow because 2 years ago when our "favorite son" was running for president the democrat legislature changed the primary date so Illinois could be FIRST!!!! Hey, that's how they roll.
Posted by: ratskeller at February 01, 2010 07:28 PM (8c0Nf)
He voted for cap and trade? If the answer is yes, then every effort should be made to replace the guy with someone else, even if it's a losing proposition. That's the way to make clear that the people he is supposed to represent aren't happy with the job he's doing.
Never give a politician the chance to play you for a sucker twice.

Andrzejewski is a vanity candidate, Never ran for anything before, recites some good talking points but has no real program.
McKenna is a corrupt RINO insider - and heaven help us, the front runner.
Ryan is old, tired, lost to Blagojevich in 2002.
Brady had his shot in 2006; split the conservative vote so an insider got the nomination.
Dillard is the only conservative with a chance to stop McKenna. He said some stupid things about Obama during the 2008 Democrat primaries, but he campaigned for McCain in November, He's sound on guns, abortion, taxes - and knows the state government inside out. McKenna is spending $millions to attack him.
Also for any Illinoisans:
Jim Dodge for comptroller. Topinka is trying a comeback with that office. The other candidate, Kelly, is a nitwit whose girlfriend works for Topinka's PR firm.
Jason Plummer for Lieutenant Governor, Matt Murphy is McKenna's crony and Plummer is the strongest alternative.
Drew M.: The primary is in February to stretch out the election process and make it even harder for outsiders to challenge the Combine. Filing date for the primary was November 2, 2009 - only 10 months into the 2-year term of a state representative.

Not to sound like a broken record here, but Dillard cut a TV commercial for Obama during the 2008 presidential race!!! Was McCain the most exciting candidate in the history of Illinois? No, but Obama is a democrat for pete's sake so no republican with any sense of party loyalty should have cut a TV spot for Obama. Period. Right now if Colin Powell ran for anything as a republican, would anybody support him? No I don't think so. The only thing worse than a rino is a republican who endorses democrats.
For gov, Brady is a good guy, long history downstate, could run an effective campaign against either Hynes or Quinn in the general.
For Lt. gov, Plummer is only 27 years old, he has zero experience doing anything. Talk about all hat no cattle. Don Tracy on the other hand is an attractive conservative who has years of business experience.

I'm going to vote this morning. Kirk, of course.
Everyone screaming that Kirk is a RINO or "disgraced his uniform" by receiving special treatment while a reserve officer --
Whatever else he is, he is no DeDe. Please, people, get a grip.
This is Illinois, people. Our other Senator had no qualms comparing American troops to Nazis and Pol Pot's forces. Kirk by all rights should just resign from the National Guard, agreed, if he is going to be a full time member of Congress, but in the end, his service speaks for itself as something better than the alternative.
Look, Kirk is a "moderate" on the McCain model. I don't have any patience for those who insist that every candidate be Santorum or Go To Hell. We had Alan Keyes run here, and he was one of the many cockups of the Republican party that handed that Senate Seat to The One on silver platter.
Kirk is a moderate. If he still believed in Cap'n'Tax, he would be unacceptable. He doesn't and he's not. Yes, he's a gun grabber -- bad -- and the surge thing is puzzling. He's either not too bright or he bends in the wind, but either way the winds are blowing rightward, and he's one more vote against Obamacare and against Harry Reid.
===
The REAL issue is the governor's pile-up. The question here is between Andre--shshhsh--uh, whatever -- and Dan Proft. I go between the both of them. I'm going to vote in 30 minutes and I'm honestly still undecided. Proft is the better speaker, but Andreshshshky might ride that Polish omnibus. Or either might just be a protest vote.
I'd sqeal like a schoolgirl to get either of them in there.
Proft has Ditka's endorsement, so there's that.
Also, Rush did NOT call Andresshshhshsky the "Scott Brown of Illinois" he deliberately said he didn't want to say any names. (He was just playing Lech Walesa quotes at an Andresshshshsky rally). He deliberately said he didn't want to make an endorsement but made it sound like he endorsed Andre-- uh -- the Polish guy.
Also, I still live on the Northwest side. Polish girls are like nothing else, true.
