Too Sun-Baked?
— Slublog

Jimmy Buffett knows who to blame for the oil spill.

The Obama-supporting musician told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he believed the Bush administration was responsible for the crisis, due to its alleged ties to oil companies.

"To me it was more about eight years of bad policy before [Obama] got there that let this happen," said Buffett. "It was Dracula running the blood bank in terms of oil and leases."

While celebrities from Larry King to James Cameron have already lined up to offer aid to people impacted by the oil spill, Buffett says he also hopes that his sea-side concert next Sunday in Gulf Shores, Alabama will soothe people's anger over the crisis.

"People were going, 'What are you going to do about things?' I mean, hell, I can't stick my finger in that hole. Everybody wishes they could," Buffett told the Associated Press on Tuesday. "What I'm best at is two hours of escapism for people that have to go back and either live jobs that they don't like or whatever...it's that Mardi Gras mentality."

Sources close to Mr. Buffett tell me that he's re-written the lyrics of his hit song "Margaritaville" to respond to the crisis in the Gulf. Below the jump are the new lyrics.

Drinking some kool-aid
Watching the sun fade
All of those seabirds covered with oil
The gusherÂ’s still flowing
Shows no sign of slowing
Time to create a convenient foil

Throwing goodwill away with mindless BDS
Should have stuck with just singing about salt
Some people claim that ObamaÂ’s to blame
But I knowÂ…itÂ’s that damn BushÂ’s fault

I donÂ’t know the reason
But people like my wheezinÂ’
My career is based on this one damn song
So I spout simple blather
To prove that I still somehow matter
And having these opinions proves I belong

Throwing goodwill away with mindless BDS
Should have stuck with just singing about salt
Some people claim that ObamaÂ’s to blame
Now I thinkÂ…that this kool-aidÂ’s at fault

I should grow out of this song
But itÂ’s just been so long
Since I had to do anything but cruise
So I ride on my past hit
And mistakenly use it
For permission to comment on whatÂ’s in the news

Just throwing goodwill away with mindless BDS
Should have stuck with just singing about salt
Some people claim that ObamaÂ’s to blame
But I knowÂ…itÂ’s that damn BushÂ’s fault
Some people claim that ObamaÂ’s to blame
Sill I knowÂ…itÂ’s that damn BushÂ’s fault

18 Here's a thought:

Barack Obama ran for the Presidency on the premise that Bush had spent eight years screwing up the country in every conceivable way and to the nth degree.  He claimed he was the only guy who could repair the damage.

So how does it make Obama look any less like an impotent, incompetent dolt to blame Bush for every current problem?  Obama told us going in that everything was Bush's fault AND YET he was ready, willing and able to fix it all.  And in this moment, even if one accepts that everything was and is Bush's fault, Obama still ought to be judged by his own standard: his supporters hired him to fix what Bush broke, so whining that Bush broke everything, far from being a reasonable excuse for making no progress, is an outright admission that he lied about his own qualifications and capabilities.

38 Buffett's music is repetitive crap; people buy into the lifestyle he represents, which is getting loaded by a beach somewhere. It's the same gimmick jam bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish push, which is apparently huge amounts of drugs and endless chord progressions. I hate bands like that, and I hate their sheep fans that take on a phony affectation like the "lifestyle" even worse.

6/6/2010

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. — The timing might be a bit off for tourists hoping to waste away in Margaritaville. But that doesn't bother Jimmy Buffett.

The singer — whose tunes are as much a part of life in this beach town as fried grouper sandwiches, Land Shark beer and the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels — is planning to open a 162-room Margaritaville Hotel in a week.

As tar balls came ashore Saturday from an oil plume shooting out of the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, Buffett said he had no plans to delay the opening.

"This will pass," he said as walked along the city's beachfront and fishing pier with Fla. Gov. Charlie Crist.

Buffett's $50 million hotel sits on the Gulf near the main section of Pensacola Beach. Hundreds of applicants lined up outside this week for a job fair even as television trucks filled a nearby parking lot to report on the oil slick's arrival.

The hotel sits on land where Hurricane Ivan destroyed a previous hotel in 2004.

He was a nice guy and the warm up act, a ventriloquist, was so funny both of us were on the floor laughing. The booze flowed and then he performed.........I honestly have no memory of his performance but anybody that can still stand after what we drank can't be all bad.

I would love for someone on the left to tell me about one thing Obama had done before he ran for president that could indicate that he could handle a crisis. 69 Oh, for fuck's sake, Jimmy, shut up.

-A Parrothead

I'll openly and freely admit to enjoying his music.  Really, once you get past the obnoxious overplayed ones he's most known for, he has written some nice lyrics, and the Margaritaville restaurants are good fun.  I imagine he's being interviewed because he grew up in Mobile and cut his musical teeth in New Orleans.  His career took off after he spent some time in Key West.  And--not coincidentally--he just opened an enormous freaking name-branded resort in Pensacola.  So, yeah.  He's got some leathery skin in the game.

There's always been a bit of a tinge of politics to some of his songs (his first album was the usual hippie folk crap of the late '60s), and when he was interviewed on CNN with Anderson Pooper, he was extremely careful not to seem too partisan one way or another.  Why?  Because he's a businessman, and the core of his fanbase is middle class redstaters who like to blender it up one night a year in an amphitheater parking lot.

Is there anyone who is more the absolute epitome of the American dream than Buffett?  Mediocre talent, great marketer, tours in the summer to replenish the coffers...  God bless him.  Just STFU about politics

This.  The man is worth 31 million dollars A.YEAR. A year!  He didn't get there on the purity of his musical expression-- and he knows it.  The man owns something like four airplanes, and more power to him...but the cash making those suckers' props run ain't from residuals on "Cheesburger in Paradise."  It's the concert tickets, the branded margarita maker, the Buffett beer, the tee shirts, the lawn chairs, the baseball caps, and the Lost Shaker of Salt ($7.99, Margaritaville Cafe.)

So he's made his millions, and bless him for it.  He keeps a lot of people employed and I for one enjoy his music.  Politically, the man is an idiot, but he is by all accounts a hard worker despite the beach bum persona, and I respect him for that.  But, Jimmy?  I'd suggest that you not diss the system WHICH ALLOWED YOU TO ATTAIN YOUR EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE LIVELIHOOD.

High Times: You said you've done benefits for Jimmy Carter. Were you politically active before?

Buffett: No. It's been 12 years since we've had anybody to vote for. I went out and saw Carter work. I have a good gut feeling about him, and that's it. I live on audience response and intuition, and I react to it. Have all my life.

Here's another one. I wrote this one awhile back...

Obamaville

Nibblin' on tofu
Can't find no real food.
Environmental wackos are banning it all.
My last job was taken
By an illegal alien
Now my home has four canvas walls.

Wastin' my time here in  an Obamaville.
Waiting for my slice of hope and change.
Some people claim that George Bush is to blame.
But I know...
It's big government's fault.

I don't know the reason
they  all believed him
When Obama promised us the sun and the moon.
It must have been magic
But now it's turned tragic
And the media still doesn't have a clue.

Wastin' my time here in  an Obamaville.
Waiting for my slice of hope and change.
Some people claim that George Bush is to blame.
But I know...
It's big government's fault.

Al Gore keeps warning
about global warming
He wants me to pay for the damage I've done.
With my tofu burrito
and my flaming hot nachos
I'll blow him a tune to keep  him on the run.

Wastin' my time here in  an Obamaville.
Waiting for my slice of hope and change.
Some people claim that George Bush is to blame.
But I know...
It's big government's fault.

a big f-ing Obama ho.

Come November It'll be all right,
Come November I'll be blaming Bush every night.
I spent four lonely days eight lonely years in a alcoholic haze
and I just want Obama back on prime time

Yes it's been quite a bummer,
with oil spills and Holder holdin the reins
And now Obama's off playing golf

somethin' Gibbs keeps tryin to explain.
And Obama I love you so that's
the reason I keep blamin Bush, Cheney & Rove

177 I never liked that guy and his music I liked even less.  Next time the better half has Sirius tuned to Margaritaville, there will be serious remonstrations.

LOL, I haven't shown that channel on the Satellite to my wife. She worships him.

That Son of a Son of a Bitch (h/t Club Dread) needs to fix himself a nice cold glass of STFU and write a decent song. I haven't heard any good songs from him in almost 20 years.

I live close to where the show is happening and I appreciate him doing this, but the jab at Bush was totally unnecessary and ill-informed. I'm glad I'm not going and if I had a chance I wouildn't.

I kinda-sorta liked him for a while, but I was officially done when he was giving out free tickets to one of his shows at polling stations in Florida in '08.

Hope this is up to moron standards.  Same subject different singer (Carly Simon .. You're So Vain)

You walked onto the oil fouled beach

Like you were walking onto a yatch

Your knee strategically dipped to fetch a tarball

Your sleeves they were all rolled up

You had one eye on the prompter as

You talked about kicking ass

And all the while Chrissie dreamed he'd be your partner

Dreamed he's be your partner    AND

You're Hussein ... You probably think this spill is about you

You're Hussein (you're Hussein) I'll bet you think this spill is about you .... Don't you? Don't you?

Well you had us several years ago

When we were still quite naive

And you said that we'd make such a pretty world

And that you would always lead

But you gave away the trust you earned ... as we gaze on the oil sea

We had some dreams now there's tar on the dolphins ... tar on the dolphins  AND

You're Hussein ... You probably think this spill is about you

You're Hussein (Hussein) I'll bet you think this spill is about you .... Don't you? Don't you?

Ace  (To better fit the melody; better fit = better parody)

Don't know the reason

That foks like my wheezin'

My career is based on this one damn song

So I'll spout this blather

To prove I still matter

Having these opinions proves I belong

No need to thank me Ace. I'm pretty good at this

Jimmy Buffet churns out boring, mediocre crap music.  He is nothing more than a local wine bar musician who has been extraordinarily lucky in his success.  Gives that skank Madonna a run for the money as the artist who has gone so far on so little talent.

Hey Jimmy Baby you gonna give back all that money you made while Bush was President?

This douchebag should be drowned in a vat of Margaritas.

185 Well, i do like his music and have since A1A came out years ago. But I haven't lined the man's coffers in a long while (cough*utorrent*cough) and it seems like i can't turn around without finding some over-priced tschoke branded with "Margaritaville". I expected him to come out with some liberal blather after hearing the last track on "Buffet Hotel" that said something about "hoping that Barack and Joe can fix things up". That cemented the decision NOT to ever buy his music again and avoid his junk in the stores (do you REALLY need a $300 blender? Really?!?) I will also pass on his eateries and his beer (I like dark beer anyways).

And i love the spot-on parodies, excellent job, y'all!
