WASHINGTON – The number of people filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week by the largest amount in three months. The big surge was a setback to hopes that layoffs were declining.

The Labor Department says that applications for unemployment benefits rose to 471,000 last week, up by 25,000 from the previous week. It was the first increase in five weeks and the biggest jump since a gain of 40,000 in February.

This is unexpected! Combine this with the record number of foreclosures and there's only one conclusion you can draw. The economy is racist.

AP puts a lovely little spin on the end of the article

The forecast had been for claims to fall by around 4,000 from the previous week. The unexpectedly large rise in new claims unscored that even though the economy is growing, improvements in the labor market are coming in fits and starts.

Bloomberg.com spins it the same way as AP but adds this to the unemployment story

“It’s very discouraging,” said Ryan Wang, an economist at HSBC Securities USA Inc. in New York. “The other troubling thing is the total number of people receiving benefits, including extended and emergency benefits, has remained very high.”

The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure than the weekly figures, climbed to 453,500 last week from 450,500, todayÂ’s report showed. The number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits fell by 40,000 in the week ended May 8 to 4.63 million. They were forecast to drop to 4.61 million.

The continuing claims figure does not include the number of Americans receiving extended benefits under federal programs.

Eighteen states and territories reported a decrease in claims, while 35 reported an increase. These data are reported with a one-week lag.

Imagine how bad it would be if Barry didn't have his laser like focus on the economy

22 From Drudge a Story:

This from the Denver Post remarking on schools in one county voting to charge 50 cents per ride fees for school buses.

Yeah I know that doesn't sound like much and what's 50 cents or $5.00 a week (unless you have a lot of kids) for riding the bus anyway huh?

Well the problem is all the reasoning and thought that has gone into this combined with the fact that once this kind of shit starts it spreads all over the country AND the "fees" always go up.

First, supposedly all the tax increases over the past century for schools were supposed to pay for this kind of crap. Second, do you think everyone will pay the fee? If you do I have a timeshare at Daytona I will sell you cheap.

From the story in the Post I could find no description of anything they did to reign in spending in other areas. This is the same kind of shit we see from all over the country from local government employee's unions and government bodies.

The ONLY solution is always a tax increase and when the bad economy goes away the taxes NEVER go back to where they were. The spending goes up and the cycle continues. At least since the article doesn't call this a "temporary" fee I guess they are admitting it this time.

After this episode passes and the next "crisis" hits there will be some local politician screaming about how the 50 cent fee for riding a bus is unreasonably low and doesn't cover the actual costs while he proposes that the amount be increased to $2.50 (except for the poor unfortunates who can't afford it).

Too bad CO doesn't have a Chris Cristie to reign them in.

My solution to the school funding problem?  Eliminate the federal department of education and all federal laws. That is where a lot of the spending comes from. Second eliminate all property taxes and State taxes designed to fund schools. Third make ALL of the schools supported by fees.  Fourth make it illegal to unionize ANY government employee. and have businesses start an apprenticeship program that takes care of people who really don't belong in school to begin with.

From the NY Slimes

Tensions between the Obama administration and the scientific community over the gulf oil spill are escalating, with prominent oceanographers accusing the government of failing to conduct an adequate scientific analysis of the damage and of allowing BP to obscure the spillÂ’s true scope.

The scientists assert that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other agencies have been slow to investigate the magnitude of the spill and the damage it is causing in the deep ocean.

And the scientists say the administration has been too reluctant to demand an accurate analysis of how many gallons of oil are flowing into the sea from the gushing oil well.

These scientists are obviously racists. Barry has done an excellent job of finger pointing and politically grandstanding over this.

From the Elliot Wave e-Newsletter

What's To Become of the Euro?
Before his death in 2006, University of Chicago economist Milton Friedman famously predicted that the euro would not survive its first economic crisis. He later backed off that prediction somewhat, but the ongoing bear may yet prove his initial forecast correct.

The Elliott Wave Financial Forecast offered a socionomic rationale for our forecast back in May 2005: "The euro is a currency managed by a group of trading partners who have been historically distinct if not involved in warring with each other." By itself, the fact that 16 countries could put aside their differences to manage a common currency speaks to the magnitude of the erstwhile bullish mood. The size of this ongoing c-wave, however, will bring that cooperation to an end.

Cracks are surfacing already. The binding characteristic of the economies of Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain--aside from their derogatory moniker, The Four Little PIGS--is that each country is a full-fledged member of the euro-zone. Eastern-bloc nations, in contrast, merely peg their own currencies to the euro, and authorities could easily remove the link at any time. This means that economic pain in Southern Europe influences the euro's perceived safety to an even greater extent than Eastern Europe's woes.

And, to be sure, Southern Europe will destabilize as Primary wave 3 gains traction. The five-down, three-up structure of the region's equity markets since 2007 argues unequivocally that more weakness lies ahead. In early December, Fitch downgraded Greece's debt rating after the FTASE Index plunged 25 percent from its October 15 high. Greece is the first country in the 16-nation euro zone to fall below single-A status, but it surely won't be the last. S&P has already downgraded the credit outlook for Spain to "negative," and this is only the beginning of the move lower.

Don't worry -- they've replaced him with Kevin Costner:

Could there be a Hollywood ending to the Gulf oil spill?

Enter "Waterworld" star Kevin Costner, who has invented a device that cleans oil from sea water.

British Petroleum - desperate for ideas - gave the okay to test six of Costner's gizmos Wednesday, after the Army Corps of Engineers gave the machine a thumbs-up.

Costner's $24 million centrifuge machine has a Los Angeles-perfect name, "Ocean Therapy."

Placed on a barge, it sucks in oily water, separates out the oil and spits back clean water.

"It's like a big vacuum cleaner," said Costner's business partner, Louisiana trial lawyer John Houghtaling.

If Costner's machine works, I won't complain. (And I've said here before that Costner's one of the better people in Hollywood.) Besides, it's not like they fired Katz and then hired Costner in his place. I don't think the two are working in the same field.

To sum up, I'd complain about Katz but Costner's presence here is irrelevant.

If the infernal thing works, and the costs to operate it don't exceed the benefits, then let them rip. This would be a case of conservatism in action. Having said that, when I was in the Marine Reserves (no, I was not in the rice krispie paddies with Danger Dick Blumenthal) our bulk fuel units used 250 gpm and 500 gpm pumps. I suppose that the time factor is based on the time required to affect the seperation of the oil and water.

Bragger, mine is 10.  Old Seven cars never die.

Hahahahahahahahahaha.  Mine is 18 and I expect to have it 10 more years.  Got a line on a "little old lady only drove it to church" kind of car that's an '01.  I'm excited.  It's got 34,000 miles on it and supposedly looks like new and is loaded.

"What color will you be wearing today, Lordess?"
"ALL OF THEM!"

Probably need to have them taken out a few sizes, though.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland Security and Pentagon officials are at loggerheads over a plan to send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, even as President Barack Obama is pledging to bolster security there.

........drumroll........

"The president is firmly committed to ensuring that our Southwest border is secure," Shapiro said. "The administration continues to evaluate additional law enforcement options as well as the use of the National Guard, as needed, along the Southwest border."

O/T breaking news: I'm a "grandma" as of (approximately) 3:30 this morning.  My daughter's mare had her foal; a big stud colt.  Name: Combat Pay (aka. Payday).  He's all attitude -- coming a week early, out in my pasture, very unannounced...and knocking me flat and kicking me as one of his first actions in life.

Ginger gets the honors of calling the day and time (it was pretty close...kudos Ginger)...and perhaps fittingly the foal is a ginger!

108 since 25% of California's power is supplied by Arizona power companies, he thinks that if Arizona cut off the juice, California would suddenly develop an entirely different attitutude about [boycotting Arizona b/c of their new state law allowing cops to ask for proof of legal residence].

How 'bout this:  Cut off power, but agree to sell power to some 3rd party, which would then be free to sell to CA but at a big mark-up.  Power company in CA passes the higher cost through to its customers.  Some lefty reporter--seeing the eeeevil giant company hurting the little guy--says "Why the rate increase?"

Whereupon the power-co spokesman says "Because your dumb city council members were stupid enough to boycot Arizona."

Palin vs. Didier checklist:

-          From a small town?  Check!  Eltopia has 807 people, or 10,000 less than Wasilla, with a density of 9 people per square mile.   Wasilla: 467 people/mile.

-          Strong work ethic?  Perseverance and determination?  Check!

-          People tell you that you have no chance?  Check!

-          The opponent has a war chest and you have grassroots support?  Check!

-          Won a state championship?  Check!  (Plus two time Super Bowl champ and coaching two state championships)

-          Thinks sports helped define them?  Check!

-          Wants to bring responsibility and accountability back into the US government?  Check!

-          Anti-establishment candidate?  Check!

-          Start with no name recognition?  Check!

-          Spent time fishing or farming?  Check!

-          Thinks we have to “clean the crap out” of D.C.?  Check!

-          Wants to limit government?  Thinks that as government grows, liberty fades?  Check!

-          Went to a small, non-Ivy league school?  Check!

-          Feels children and grandchildrenÂ’s future is at stake?  Check!

-          Running against the republican favorite?  Check!

-          Wants to honor the constitution?  Check!

-          Is against raising taxes?   Check!

-          Wants to get America back to work with private sector jobs?  Check!

-          Believes in American exceptionalism?  Check!

-          Believes in common sense things like you canÂ’t spend your way into prosperity?  Check!

-          Member of the NRA?  Pro life?  Support of traditional marriage?  Check, check, check!

Gee, you think any of this is why Palin endorsed Didier today?
