Re sidebar: Britain faces coldest winter in 25 years Global warming
Not to be pedantic but the article says 30 years. Couple of nice babes in the pictures included as well. It appears that the U.S. and Europe both are firmly attached to another round of record breaking cold.
We are on the verge of another ice age with three seasons in a row of record breaking cold and the warmies still are trying to maintain their scam.

Man, around these parts unless it warms up soon I'm basically going to be walking through a high snow trench to get to my car. All we get is snow, below freezing temps, then more snow. This crap isn't melting.
Now I can see how an ice-age starts.

Global warming logic: The hotter it gets, the colder it gets. The bitter cold is proof of global warming. What a bunch of air heads. They seem to think ignoring all the exposed fraud by their Gurus and yelling even more insistently is a sound strategy. Dey brings da stoopid...

Tiny apartment + insulated crawl space + electric blanket + cat = toasty toasty nights. Of course, that doesn't help me brush the global warming off my car in the mornings.

Dems 'Almost Certain' to Bypass Conference
According to a pair of senior Capitol Hill staffers, one from each chamber, House and Senate Democrats are “almost certain” to negotiate informally rather than convene a formal conference committee. Doing so would allow Democrats to avoid a series of procedural steps--not least among them, a series of special motions in the Senate, each requiring a vote with full debate--that Republicans could use to stall deliberations, just as they did in November and December.
“There will almost certainly be full negotiations but no formal conference,” the House staffer says. “There are too many procedural hurdles to go the formal conference route in the Senate.”

I'm curious to people's opinion on the Mike Leach and Craig issue. Leach is a weird dude but I find myself on his side and thinking Craig is a spoiled whiny kid.
I graduated from Texas Tech. I even attend some of their football games, usually when UT comes to Lubbock. I tend to feel the same way you do but I find it curious that the players don't seem to be siding with Leach. That is telling.

LOL, Fox just did a story that lets out the real reason the communists want to tax the so-called “Cadillac” healthcare plans. They claimed they were taxing the “rich” however the expert on Fox said that the overwhelming majority of these plans were owned by government employees and unions.
The idea is that if they apply a 40% tax on the plan the administrator for the plan will pass that cost on to the consumer who will then cancel the plan and sign up for the government option. Cancelling the plan will allow higher wages to be paid to the employee who will then be taxed on those wages.
The commies get a two-fer, a huge tax increase and killing private plans even quicker.

NH is a leaning blue, purple state, remember Dubya won there in 2000 & almost won again in 2004, Obama & McCain were in a tight contest there in 2008 for awhile before the financial crisis ended the McCain campaign, it's also I believe the New England state Obama polls the worst in getting mid 50 approvals while the rest of that region gives him approvals in the 60s

Leach had one thing against him, the whiny kid's dad worked for ESPN & ESPN went guns blazing w/ bias coverage against him, ESPN has gotten more bias and political the last year (remember what they did to Rush?), and they went after the Broncos' coach for benching Brandon Marshall (the same guy who tried to do a pro-Obama touchdown celebration 2 days after he was elected) even though Brandon was late to a team medical appointment

From Hotair:
A former high-ranking intelligence official in Iran has called for his country to form better relations with the United States and Israel and says the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is on the verge of collapse.
In an exclusive interview with the Bangkok Post Sunday, Mohammad Reza Madhi, a former officer in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards’ intelligence service, described Mr Ahmadinejad as ”crazy” and unfit to lead his country.
”He has already destroyed international relationships with many countries and made them enemies of Iran,” said Mr Madhi, who was forced to flee Iran in 2008 after being jailed for 73 years on what he described as ”trivial” charges. ”This has cost the Iranian people so much. His ideas are dangerous.”

He is from Bishopville, SC which is a small town in Lee country. He represents the SC 1st district which used to be considered solid Republican since Charleston was shifted to the 6th district. At least four Republicans had announced their intention to challenge Brown in the June 8 primary, including businessman Carroll Campbell III -- son of the late (and beloved) governor.
I would go with Cambell who will actually be more of a fiscal conservative than Brown.

WSJ had interesting op-ed this a.m. "Prohibition: A Cautionary Tale" by Thomas Fleming.
"Today most people think Prohibition was fueled by puritanical Protestants who believed drinking alcohol was a sin. But the vocal minority who made Prohibition law believed they were marching in the footsteps of the abolitionists who sponsored a civil war to end another moral evil--slavery. At least as important was the belief that Prohibition would produce health and wealth. Yale economist Irving Fisher, the best-known economist in the early 20th century, predicted that a ban on alcohol would guarantee a 20% rise in industrial productivity. He cited 'scientific' tests that proved alochol diminished a worker's efficiency by as much as 30%.
Fisher and many other anti-alcohol proponents were fervent believers in eugenics...removing alcohol from the national diet was central to many eugenicists' belief that an invigorated America would eventually create a race of supermen and women.
...Prohibition corrupted and tormented Americans from coast to coast...In 2010, with talk of restructuring large swaths of our economy back in vogue, Prohibition should also remind us that Congress, scientists and economists seized by the noble desire to achieve some great moral goal may be abysmally wrong."

Since I'm the guy that's been dropping the Leach headlines, I guess I could at least offer my .02. Short answer, I don't fucking know who's right or wrong.
Everything that's been asserted is possible, it could be that the admin has decided Leach is a dick and he's gotta go, James could be a whiney bitch, could be a money deal (although schools really don't mind paying out when you win big, something Tech didn't do this year).
Who knows? It's not like Tech hasn't taken risks with crazy-ass genius coaches before, see Knight, Robert.
Do I believe it's possible big-time big-money coaches can be abusive? Duh, I thought it was in the job description. Do players sometimes not love that shit? Duh again. Can hotshot prima donna ESPN announcers who have a kid on the team stick their noses in it? Way up where it's brown, yes they can.
See who comes out ahead with cash and you'll know who was (mostly) right.

"Briton pulled alive from Swiss avalanche as record freezing weather grips Europe, North America and Asia"
Quite.
Remember: 2 and a half months ago the British Meteorological office was predicting an uncommonly mild winter, and in 2000 they were saying, due to climate change, snowstorms would become a very rare event... even in northern England... where, during the (man-caused???) warm period known as the "Holocene optimum" the Romans tended VINYARDS.
In northern England. While the Vikings farmed in Greenland a millennia later during the medieval warm period.
Anyhow, the Met Office, big believers in man-caused global warming, can't predict the weather in 2.5 months, or in 9 years, but by God they can predict the future of the Earth's climate in 50 and 100 years. Except ALL of the climate computer models have ALWAYS failed to predict the future temperatures... always... it's colder than they predict.
Conspiracy among top scientists to hide (and delete) data, distort data, and discredit their critics calling them (neo-nazi- like) "climate deniers"?
Okay, forget that for now. How about human blindness (the sort of blindness even scientists have held throughout history for their pet theories in the face of new thinking and data) and adherence to an idea that seemed great, but the facts don't support?
On another subject, this time about humanity and philosophy, I'm thinking about adding this, a quote from one of my favourite philosophers, to my standard "signature line":
"All religions must be tolerated... for every man must get to heaven in his own way."
— Epictetus
Mind you, I actually disagree with him about some things, which is why I'm also a fan of Epicurus....
Together, they rock.
Declaration of independence author, Thomas Jefferson, wrote in a letter to William Short:
"As you say of yourself, I TOO AM AN EPICUREAN. I consider? the genuine doctrines of Epicurus as containing everything rational in moral philosophy which Greece and Rome have left us. Epictetus, indeed, has given us what was good of the Stoics."
— Thomas Jefferson
... and I shan't say what this American founder had to say about another belief system.
Focussing simply on Epicureanism amd Stoicism, those 2 philosophies, properly understood, have stood the test of time, and have helped both Emperor and slave for century and century, from Marcus Aurelius, to Epictetus the slave himself, to Medal of Honor bearer Admiral James Stockdale.
They are studied in universities and homes around the world to the present day.
I strongly invite you to look into them if you haven't already.
I believe there you'll discover a lot of the best underpinnings of the thought that went into the magnificent constitution and free traditions of the United States of America, many of the principles of capitalism (especially in Epicureanism), the western warrior ethos (Stoicism), and the best attributes of the Republican Party.
Cheers,
Christoph

Leach had one thing against him, the whiny kid's dad worked for ESPN & ESPN went guns blazing w/ bias coverage against him, ESPN has gotten more bias and political the last year (remember what they did to Rush?), and they went after the Broncos' coach for benching Brandon Marshall (the same guy who tried to do a pro-Obama touchdown celebration 2 days after he was elected) even though Brandon was late to a team medical appointment
"What they did to Rush" was small potatoes compared to the hatchet job they did to Bobby Knight. Bobby, in his early years had made fools out of reporters from Sports Illustrated and ESPN who later became editors of both of those organizations. If you go back to about two, two and a half years before Bobby was let go from IU, and do an article search, you will find an endless hatchet job by both organizations that culminated in his firing from IU. Just for fun: do you have a mental image of Bobby Knight throwing a chair? Well that image is more widely recognized than the "execution photo" that came to symbolize the entire Vietnam conflict. It was broadcast more often than the Rodney King beating that led to national rioting. I can think of DOZENS of crimes involving sports figures far more violent than Bobby's Chair Toss including shootings and dog fights....and yet THAT was the image that was broadcast, endlessly.

The blacks bought into the media myth of the "Nixon Southern Strategy" at the same time as the urban blacks bought into the welfare way of life. (we see where that LBJ "Model Cities" program got Detroit.)
The new "protected class" of Hispanics is buying into it as well now. This is why Republicans will never make any kind of gains in these groups regardless of how big tent they get.

It isn't a religion.
They're both philosophies. There's a difference.
Epictetus believed in God (and was quite a popular philosopher among early Christians). Epicurus didn't.

I don't believe an understanding of the philosophies that formed the United States' Declaration of Independence actually requires a rejection of religion.Stockdale, one of the people I mentioned, was religious, as to a degree was Marcus Aurelius, another of the people I mentioned, and, for that matter, Epictetus, one of the two philosophers beloved by Thomas Jefferson whom I mentioned.
But, sure, other than that, and the fact I quoted Epictetus as saying:
"All religions must be tolerated... for every man must get to heaven in his own way."
... it was an anti-religious diatribe.

It was on a more general thread related to "headlines", and I started with a great headline, and analysis no one here has disagreed with.
Then, I chose to open it up into a more broad discussion of the history of the founding philosophy of the United States, as well as the fact I recently learned one of my favourite philosophers, whom I've mentioned here before, spoke of the need for religious tolerance.
I may not completely agree with him, but reading that from someone I have grown to respect gave me pause.

well, I'd invite you down sassy, but it's only mid 30s max here all week, and teens at night. but we don't have snow. The flip side is, the threat of snow will shut down the area for a day or 2, and god help us if it does actually snow. they have no idea how to deal with it.

Stereotypes about Texans -- I've heard bad things, but whenever I press for specifics I get, "You know!" I've never been to Texas so I really don't know, and I suspect the stereotypes are derived from that one Family Guy episode.
So aside from those Texans I know a little something about (Lyndon Johnson, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, National Oilwell Varco and the Dallas Starts Ice Girls) I'll have to revert to these stereotypes and prejudices when it comes to everybody else in the state and root for Boise State and Alabama in this week's games.
Sorry, Dave in Texas; it's nothing personal. I know it's totally based on my ignorance of your state. And for what it's worth, I hope you guys don't have any more problems with the superdevil.

That's why I was drawing attention to those 2 philosophers and inviting people who are interested to check it out in their own time.
I'm sure I'm not the only person to not know they were important in the American founding before today (equally, I'm sure their must be some well-educated commenters at this site who do know this).
And for those who didn't, I thought it would be interesting.

LOL, I have been trying to talk my wife into us moving to Worland, WY but she complains that it gets too cold in WY. Now we have the cold AND still have all the taxes and blue laws.
BTW, WY has no income tax, no State sales tax, and generally very low property tax. (Worland has a 5% city sales tax).

Seriously, I think that's been the left-wing script lately: "Texas, you know how they are down there." And I betray myself as not being part of the group when I don't immediately agree. (I guess prejudice is cool again, but you gotta keep up on which specific prejudices.)
And really, Dave, I like your work here. LBJ may've been an asshole, but Selena was awesome. And Wayman Tisdale was from Texas, too. (And I meant Dallas Stars Ice Girls -- but you knew that, I'm sure.)

Do you really think Fl. would have handled Boise St. the way they did Cincy?
Posted by: teej at January 04, 2010 09:56 AM (QdUKm)
I think so. Florida was really good again this year. Maybe not as dominating in all aspects as last year but still the a class of the field. (I'm really surprised how easily Alabama handled them but I did think Bama had good matchups with them)
And Boise state only played one ranked opponent AFAIK.
Watching tonight's game could be enlightening though.

I know some folks have posted this around here before, but this is the first time I've actually sat through it. It's quite refreshing to hear David Horowitz and Pat Caddell talk without being interrupted every two secomnds by Beck or Hannity.
This is from the Nov. 2009 Restoration Weekend. The aforementioned discuss where the radicals in charge of things came from, McCain's role in campaign finance reform and the four millionaires who made our lives miserable.

Texas Tech did all this during the Christmas break, so there weren't any students around to get up-in-arms. However, at the bowl game, the stands were filled with signs supporting Leach. One thing I have noticed is that the school didn't release all the affidavits. They only released the ones that supported their case. That's to be expected, but it still gives you pause.
I believe that the attack on Bobby Knight started with John Feinstein's book in 1987. Knight was nice enough to allow him to follow him around and Feinstein shoved a shiv all the way into Knight's back. Of course, that's what Feinstein does best. The book started people looking at Knight and looking for ways to get rid of him.
