The latest outrage from DC

IRS Plans to require all paid tax preparers to take courses, pass exams, and be licensed.  In short they are going to commence regulating the tax preparer industry started this tax year.

Link to article in CNBC

They make the same old tired argument about “improving” the process that the government makes every damn time it wants to stick its shitty nose into a a business that they don’t already control.

"Taxpayers will get improved service and enhanced standards from tax preparers, and they'll have less risk that they'll get bad advice," Shulman told reporters. "The tax preparation industry will get more consistency and a level playing field."

LOL, I like that BS statement about “less risk that they’ll get bad advice”. If I recall the surveys done in the past the government itself has a high percentage of “bad advice” from its phone service lines AND on top of that they are held immune from accountability for that advice. But that immunity doesn’t apply to you. You are still subject to menalties and interest from mistakes made due to their bad advice.

I have NEVER seen government regulations improve ANY service. In fact, usually what it does is wipe out the small players, benefit the big outfits, and increase the costs for everyone. Yes, H&R Block supports this new wave of government regulation, whoÂ’d a thunk it.

On top of all that, where does the IRS get the authority to initiate a new wave of regulation on an industry? DoesnÂ’t it take an act of congress to do that?

Just one more example of unaccountable bureaucrats running their own empires and thumbing their nose at the public. Maybe it IS time to eliminate the 16th amendment and eliminate the IRS.

3 H&R Block supports it because they have the capital to train their part time staff -- whereas the legions of independent preparers do not. Big Business is not Republican.

Big Business is not Republican.

ALL big buisness likes regulation. They scream about it but every time something new is proposed they all line up to see who can get the best deal and how they can use it to wipe out the competition.

Small buisness is the one that always gets hurt; and the consumer.

One other thing that the idiots at H&R Block need to keep in mind about being “licensed” by the government. Once you become licensed you are then subject to civil penalty at the whim of some bureaucrat for violation of their regulations.

Get audited, they find you failed to use the correct form on line 36 section 15? $1000.00 fine without benefit of any kind of trial or hearing.

Hell's freezing over until the IRS enforce the law from the top down, prosecuting Geithner and Rangle.

Congress was just passing the unconstitutional law enabling the POTUS to authorize his own budget expenditures of tax funds without Congressional input/authorization; and that followed Bush's unconstitutional Executive Order making the Treasury Secretary an autonomous Czar beholden to no one at all.

Dodd is retiring because the Dem Party in CT has told him to retire so they will have a chance in retaining his seat.

Retiring means he gets huge 110% retirement pay plus health benefits that make the Cadilac plans look like crap AND he can go in the "consuting" buisness for 10B a year.

He only loses the ego stroking that goes on in the Senate.

Yep Nighthawk, Dodd is gone.  Unfornately, CT AG Blumenthal is announcing today that he's going to run.  What was looking like a slam dunk for the GOP has turned into an uphill battle.  Blumenthal, for whatever reason, is hugely popular here.  The GOP candidates have their problems.

McMahon is going for the "outsider" angle.  She's got plenty of money, but the State Election Commision is already checking into how she spent her first $500,000.  My guess is she made a rookie mistake that may sink her.  Combine that with the fact that she's the CEO for WWE (CT likes the tax revenue, but the population here views the product as lowbrow) and I would say she doesn't have a prayer of taking on Blumenthal.

Peter Schiff, while financially savvy, echoes Ron Paul on foriegn affairs.  'Nuff said.

Rob Simmons, arguably the best of the bunch, polled the best against Dodd but outside his old district doesn't have the statewide name recognition that Blumenthal enjoys.

So, while I welcome the demise of Chris Dodd, this certainly throws a wrench into things.

Yep, the Democrats are smart. They realize they have a lot of Bob Toricellis up for reelection in 2010 so they're telling them to resign.

It's simple yet brilliant: get rid of the tainted (D) and replace him/her with another (D) with  no baggage.

If they ran Toricelli, they woulda lost. So they told Toricelli to screw and they ran Lautenberg. This is exactly what they're doing with Dodd and will do with all of the (D)'s who carry baggage into 2010. Same brand, different package.

Once again, the Democrats outfox the GOP. 2010 is not shaping up to be a big year for Republicans, I'm afraid.

Or is this sort of thing done all the time up north, and I'm just being pathetically naive?

This is the new wave of State funding instead of going for even more tax increases. It used to be illegal to make an interstate a toll road but that changed some time ago.

States all over the country are doing that now. It has become the new "accomadations" tax because it taxes the out of State people. The local idiots don't see that if everyone does it they are not escaping the tax.

Some States are even leasing the toll roads to foreign buyers for quick money.

Huge,

You've got a point.  It is going to be, like I said up there, an uphill battle.  However, I'm not sure it's a lost cause.  Simmons lost the 2nd district in '06 by less than a hundred votes.  He was actually a pretty good congressman but was done in by a commercial that morphed his face into W's.

If the eventual GOP candidate can successfully hang Dodd (and Obama if his numbers are in the crapper by Nov.) around Blumenthal's neck, we've got a fighting chance.

Sigh.  I was afraid of that.  Princess Hutchison is all in favor of toll roads, btw, making the 2 GOP frontrunners all nice and agreeable with each other on this issue.  Deborah Medino, currently running after the GOP (kind of a Doug Hoffman scenario shaping up) is the only candidate appearing in the Republican primary debate that is against the idea.

I can tell you this right now, if either Hutchison or Perry are the GOP candidate, I'm voting 3rd party.  Might as well have a democrat in office if we're getting fed shit sandwiches regardless.  At least I can order the steak.

I don't think it's a big deal for states to collect tolls on interstate highways.  For years I-95 through Connecticut had toll booths what seemed like every 20 feet.  At the time the toll was $0.30 - which coincidentally was the same as the proceeds from the deposit for an empty six-pack so an interesting "kill two birds with one stone" concept was born...

I don't think it's a big deal for states to collect tolls on interstate highways.

I do, it is a massive agravation. The taxes from gasoline and tags was supposed to pay for roads. This is outside the fact that when the interstate system was first built under Eisinhower they were mandated to NOT be toll roads. If a State made any part of one a toll road they lost federal dollars for that road.

Iguess that requirement went away the same time that congress stold 20% of the gas tax to use for a slush fund to the big city urban areas to buy votes with.

I would go along with toll roads if they kill the gas tax.

The only reason I thought it might be a big deal is because of the interstate commerce clause.  You'd think if the government regulates lettuce sold within a state based on that, they'd have something to say about states arbitrarily holding up actual interstate commerce for lootage.

Not that I'm in favor of the commerce clause being abused, but this could actually be a legitimate use for it.

IIRS, any new tolls on an interstate have to receive approval from the FHWA.  There's an application process and a whole bunch of hoops to go through.  It can be done, but it's not a matter of simply throwing up toll booths on the interstate.

Yeah the last shot he had as a Bull he was shoving Bryan Russel out of the way with his right hand. Jackson would keep him in in foul trouble because none of the refs would dare to foul him out. Hell in one of the finals games they deliberately called a foul on someone 10 feet away so they woudlnt have to give it to Jordan. I think he ruined the game of basketball honestly.

For example, Sanford can't run again in SC. But that won't stop the Democrats from hanging Sanford's affair around the neck of the Republican gubernatorial candidate, whereas Dodd's sins are forgotten as of, well, today.

Bullshit, run a woman, or, if there is no suitable woman, mention in an interview that you have never hiked the Appalachian trail.

IIRC, any new tolls on an interstate have to receive approval from the FHWA.  There's an application process and a whole bunch of hoops to go through.  It can be done, but it's not a matter of simply throwing up toll booths on the interstate.

Okay, let me guess... the federal government is fine with turning interstates into tollroads as long as they get their cut of the spoils.  That about sums it up?  I swear, the only difference between government and crime is criminals don't pretend they're doing you a favor.

76 70 that happens for megastars in several sports. Note how "roughing the passer" is completely different for Tom Brady than it is for, say, Brady Quinn. Or how SEC officials called 'Bama and Florida games all season.

Toll roads on the interstates started with the Transportation Equity Act of 1988 when the Dems controlled BOTH houses and the first of the Bushes was president (liberals all).  This is what stared the ball rolling to allow tolls on the interstates.

Arkansas became the first State to start implementing those tolls immediately thereafter under, you guessed it, Bill Clinton.

Now nearly every State in the Union has toll roads on the interstates. We donÂ’t yet but I have seen an article that says they plan to make part of I-95 here into a toll road.

Isn't Rick Lazio running?

Never mind.  No one interesting is running.

WSJ reporting:  "China's car market exploded in 2009, propping up an ailing global industry and relegating the U.S. to second place for the first time.  In 2010, vehichle sales are expected to slam on the brakes."  There was a 50% surge in 2009 which will decline to only 5-6% growth this year.  "Analysts say that among global car makers, the slowdown may be particularly severe for Ford Motor Co. and GM, for which China was perhaps the only bright spot in an otherwise painful 2009."  Heh!  This should be interesting to watch GM as they are planning to ramp up production this year and be the only car manufacturer  that runs 3 shifts at a plant here in the U.S.

I was a big fan of Stockton and Malone and Hornacek, so that final pissed me off mightily.  I haven't watched an NBA game since Stockton retired.

Barack ObamaÂ’s latest commitment to “diversity” really stretches the meaning of the word.  If you get the right weird cosmetic surgery, you now qualify for affirmative action and an Obama administration job.

Let’s Hear It For Obama Diversity: Meet “Amanda”/Mitch Simpson

The real question is, is ...it... the BEST transgendered candidate for the job or is this just another case of the "old individuals of indeterminate gender club"?

Same here. I like watching team basketball and a well executed pick and roll over watching one guy run down the court and trying to dunk the ball. They might as well call it And 1 instead of the NBA anymore. They have basically gotten rid of travelling calls so people could ooh and ahhh over a dunk.

Did he do something recently that made you say that? I don't hate him but I've never liked him and thought he was overrated.  He couldn't win a championship until both Bird and Magic were out of the league.  He also changed how the game was referred for the worse. Traveling, carrying the ball, cross over, fouls, etc.

I haven't watched a basketball game since the late 90s and since the Redskins keep going thru the suck carosel I was thinking about taking it back up but then I remember how basterdized the sport was because of that ahole Jordan so the thought process stopped right then. Also on the sports radio show I listen to at work Jordan and Barkley supposedly were running with Tiger and they mentioned him.

His acceptance speech for induction into the basketball hall of fame last year was part self-aggrandizement, and part running down of anyone who he ever played against, by name, in person, in a really mean way.

He's a dick.

Now, that would be interesting for the novelty, if nothing else.  I read somewhere that she ran Sanford's campaigns and was really the brains in the family and that it was her family money that made his career possible.

I remember in the finals vs Utah him yelling at Pippen for taking a wide open shot and not passing him the ball. Pippen clearly mouthed "I was open!" when he was getting yelled at by Jordan. Pippen made the shot.

Also he came into one of the clubs I worked at in 2000. He took 500 dollars off the manager in pool, racked up a 2000 dollar comped bartab between him and his entourage, and then walked out without leaving a tip for anyone. According to everyone I worked with, I wasn't there that night, he was a huge dick.

Thankfully it's Gilbert Arenas.

I feared for a moment that it was Javier.  Don't scare me like that.

"It can be done, but it's not a matter of simply throwing up toll booths on the interstate."

Nit-picking, but they don't even need booths anymore.  Not sure if all the TX tollways are this way now, but they've moved one step beyond the chip-reader "Toll Tags" and now just nab a picture of your license plate as you drive under the awning, and either deduct from your Toll Tag account (if you have one), or send you a bill in the mail (if you don't...or, more specifically, if the vehicle you are driving doesn't, as the bill will go to whomever the plates are registered to).

The take-away here - if you're needing to use the PGB Turnpike, borrow your neighbor's car.

And, might I add a hearty GOOD LORD THEY JUST FINISHED REBUILDING 75 AND THE HIGH-FIVE!  How many years did that take?  I don't think your average Dallasite has the resolve to endure yet another massive construction project shutting down 1/2 of Central for years on end again while they put up toll plazas.

Fort Worth has her issues, but if this comes to be, I will only be all the happier that I live over here now.
