'Morning, fellow morons. Another day, another snow storm here in the heartland. The snow hasn't melted since Christmas. It just keeps piling up. And as I watch, the wind keeps whipping it up and blowing it so it looks like smoke.

Thank God I didn't go to work last night. I switched days, but when I do go to work the low should be around -11.

Fun times indeed.

The latest outrage from Washington?

Just in from Fox this morning; the government is paying for cell phones for welfare people. If you qualify for food stamps or other forms of welfare you can get a free cell phone and free minutes for jabbering. Some “safety net” huh; cell phones are now a necessity?

All paid for by the same people who put gas in your tank and pay for your mortgage.

And here we thought welfare had been obliterated way back in the 80s.

17 Wonder if this will be covered as much as the Palin teenage daughter.. a grown-ass man..

President ObamaÂ’s top budget official acknowledged Wednesday fathering a child out of wedlock, less than two weeks after announcing his engagement to another woman.

Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag and the mother of the child, Claire Milonas, released a statement announcing the birth of their daughter soon after the New York Post reported the news on its Web site.

“We were in a committed relationship until the spring of 2009,” Orszag and Milonas said in a joint statement. “In November, Claire gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Although we are no longer together, we are both thrilled she is happy and healthy, and we would hope that everyone will respect her privacy.”

So Christoph, who is worse?  The Palis for hiding and launching their munitions in and from schools so if Israel did strike back, they would have collateral damage?  Or, the Israelis who basically get pounded by rocket and mortar attacks until every five years or so they invade and fight back?

Who targets innocents?  PALIS!

10 Seconds until the rationalizing of Pali aggression....

On the cell phone welfare...cellfare...it it sad, isn't it?  No longer do half of Americans grow up and aspire to be successful, professional contributors to society.  Now, generations are passing down the secrets to welfare success, how to live off the gov't teet, so that their children and children's children will not know anything else.  Compliments of the other half of us.  Thanks, libs, for destroying the greatest nation on earth.

Nope, it was a brief blurb on F&F this morning.  And NO it is not needed for emergencies. They already have passed a different welfare regulation that provided "FREE" 911 coverage for everyone through a different fee on your hardline telephone.  This is a separate fee on your cell phone bill usually averaging about $3.00 per month.

It is simply another damn piece of socialist shit.

69 I also saw the F&F story on the cell phones.  From what I remember, it was free cell phones, texting (didn't specify amt), conference calling (for all those conference calls welfare recipients make) and 60 min per month.  It was also stated that there was really no regulation on it...you get food stamps, welfare, Medicaid, you're automatically qualified.  The no regulation comes in for those that go OFF welfare, etc., and can keep on using the free services.  There's no way to catch or regulate when you no longer "qualify," thereby qualifying FOREVER.

Yes, it is likely a tax rebate issue. But then isn't any cost out of pocket by any company for the welfare of the poor? Keep in mind the service is only the most basic and not unlimited, usually not even text. There are different plans for different states.

No, it is paid for by a damn fee on your cell phone bill. Yes, in 1984 the FCC (not Reagan) established a program to help low income people with their phone bills. (lifeline program).  Now, thanks to Democraps in congress it has morphed into fee damn cell phones supported by fees on people who actually pay for cell phones.

Fees, otherwise known as taxes. I see NOTHING in my copy of the Consitution that authorizes the government to provide "free cell phones" to deadbeats using my money.

"Transparent."

Maybe President Obama is breaking the word into components — trans and parent — to convey what he really means, like he's going to cross over our lives like a parent, superceding our mothers and fathers.

He's not being transparent; he's being a trans-parent. In this light, he's being totally honest when he says this will be the most trans-parent administration in history.

Damn....I didn't realize the snow was so deep. Foot+ as I got nearer the street.

Of course as I got past where the sidewalk ends, I'm shoveling down to the Christmas layer, which is now the new base. About 6 inches higher than the road.

That's it. My hands got really cold, and I'm done until tomorrow some-time.

Sort of off topic. Anyone know of really, really good gloves for the cold? I thought I had some, but I guess not.

@118 - Hi again Kemp.  Okay, he sounds like a good kid.  I'll just hope for a great game (and still pull for Texas).  Like I said though, I'm sure glad it's bama.  Takes me back to the days when it was OU, Neb., OSU, Mich., Bama, USC, Penn. St., etc. that were the big dogs.

And I doubt that any conference to this day (and I know it didn't happen before) pulled off having 3 teams end up 1, 2, 3 in the country like the Big 8 did in, I believe, 1969 with NU, OU, and CU.  No conference had ever ended up with 1 and 2, let alone 1, 2, 3.

108 What I want is personal recommendations. Catalogs and web-sites are nice, but experience is what counts.

Posted by: HH at January 07, 2010 07:52 AM (1kwr2)

109 Vic, I don't actually have an opinion either way, I was simply laying out some of the information I have found on the issue.
Do I think it is Socialism to force paying customers to provide service to the indigent? No
The free market does not require the people who can afford service to use one provider rather than another. It does provide an opportunity for any service provider to offer free service to some at the cost of others. No one is forcing anyone to pay for a cell phone, but it is unlikely there are any providers that do not force paying customers to pay a little extra for free service to some.
Is every person forced to pay for the free phones? No, only those who pay for phone service. (I don't know of any provider who doesn't have a fee for this)
My point is that by choosing to pay for your own service, you are likely paying for the free ones as well. You could always not get a phone yourself, in which case you won't be paying for the free ones.
And no, I'm not arguing the issue either way, I'm just pointing out that the choice to have your own cell phone is still a free choice.
Unlike many other programs, and health care will be, should it pass.

Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve Bank of New York, then led by Timothy Geithner, told American International Group Inc. to withhold details from the public about the bailed-out insurerÂ’s payments to banks during the depths of the financial crisis, e-mails between the company and its regulator show.

AIG said in a draft of a regulatory filing that the insurer paid banks, which included Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Societe Generale SA, 100 cents on the dollar for credit-default swaps they bought from the firm. The New York Fed crossed out the reference, according to the e-mails, and AIG excluded the language when the filing was made public on Dec. 24, 2008. The e-mails were obtained by Representative Darrell Issa, ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

“It appears that the New York Fed deliberately pressured AIG to restrict and delay the disclosure of important information,” said Issa, a California Republican. Taxpayers “deserve full and complete disclosure under our nation’s securities laws, not the withholding of politically inconvenient information.” President Barack Obama selected Geithner as Treasury secretary, a post he took last year.

Wait don't tell me...it's all George Bush's fault.

Leiter - appointed by President George W. Bush - already ranked high in the buzz over whose heads could eventually end up on Obama's chopping block

Ha!  Just as we suspected, it's George Boooosh-Hitler's fault!  Our new young Precedent was the victim of the Evil Booosh/Cheney Cabal.  In Leiter's defense, he has been working with this administration for a year.  He has seen firsthand how Obama doesn't take national security seriously, and incidencts like the Panty Bomber are more of a nuisance/lawfare issue.  So he probably didn't realize that his presence or expertise was expected or needed.

Anyone got any recommendations?

There are some great gloves at REI and other sporting goods store that have Goretex Windstopper fabric on the outside, and fleece on the inside.  Northface or one of those brands.  Also, in the winter, I use those disposable "Hot Hands" handwarmers.  I use them in both mittens and gloves.  (Although they work better in mittens).

Posted by: runningrn at January 07, 2010 08:25 AM (CfmlF)

120 HH, look for gloves with a water proof shell to keep dry and Thinsulate to keep warm and you won't go wrong.  Several brands out there to choose from.  If you're shoveling or other work, keep in mind a durable material covering for the palm and insides of the fingers.

Although we are no longer together, we are both thrilled she is happy and healthy, and we would hope that everyone will respect her privacy.”

I guess this is the same type of commitment that Obama has to the war in Afghanistan, committed as long as it's convenient.

Posted by: WalrusRex at January 07, 2010 08:58 AM (xxgag)

132 HH, you need a double glove to really make it work. A thin, liner polypro glove to get the sweat wicked off of you hands; then a fleece/wool layer. If it is really cold, you then add a shell, preferably a mitten of some-sort of waterproof/breathable fabric. The layer system allows you to partially unglove for delicate tasks without exposing your skin - which in the -50 windchill can freeze very quickly.
