Most of Obama's private (and sometimes public) rebuttals to the voices slamming him on all sides are justified or spot on. He did inherit a lot of problems from the Bush Administration. He did act quickly in the initial weeks of his Administration to stave off a worldwide depression. His efforts at job creation have been obstructed by Republicans (even the proposals based on policies supported by the GOP in the past). His opponents haven't put forth specifics of their own, nor offered genuine compromise, while the media have allowed the right's activists and gabbers to run wild with criticism without furnishing legitimate alternative solutions.

Ed Anger - that article about intimidation of the CEO selling 3 hospitals is the tip of the iceberg.  Across the country physicians are selling their practices like crazy.   The word is out, however, that if you implicate Obamacare as a cause of your practice's failure to survive at this time, you will get hammered by the authorities. 

The threat that Medicare will investigate for vague "fraud" allegations or that your practice sale will be opposed by the local A.T. is enough to produce silence. 

Medicare "Fraud" accusations terrify physicians.  The billing code is far more complex than the tax code.  Just like the tax code, you can be very careful and want to do right and still be accused of some pattern of error that gets called fraud.  When you have a dispute with the government, they fine you massively first.  Only after months or years or expensive appeals and litigation may you see some of your money back. 

Look around your community and see how many practices are being merged and/or sold to hospitals or HMOs.  The docs will be mum in terms of how the government is destroying them.   They just want to get to a place where they think they can work in peace.

I think they were ill-advised (although they seem less inflammatory with that one sentence about dysfunction omitted - as it apparently was in his delivered remarks), but considering the audience and his own views, they really didn't seem that bad to me.  Have we reached a place where people who hold very strong religious views on homosexuality can't say anything except platitudes? 

The laughable thing here in Utah is that last weekend during the General Conference one of the elders made remarks about homosexuality basically along the lines of that it's a tendency that should be fought (by the individuals in question).  Pretty standard stuff and said to his congregation.  Now they broadcast the General Conference world-wide, so obviously non-believers were exposed to the remarks (if they chose to listen to them).  So right on cue gay activists were protesting the LDS church the following Monday. 

Where's the outrage?  Is there someone on the planet who doesn't know that the LDS church teaches that homosexuality is a sin?

Yesterday my family and I were obligated to join my parents at their yacht club function.  My mother also breeds Labrador retrievers, and she had two of them with her there.  Another random WASP walks up to her and compares one of the little ones to her mother, saying something like, "She looks like Mango (the mom), only a little taller and a slightly bigger head."

106 I just read the Scranton/Catholic Hospital/Obamacare story. I certainly don't see a "bigger than Watergate"-type scandal, but it's shady. I was expecting Lord to provide an example of Executive pressure/disinformation but he really didn't. Maybe a future article is coming. The nun is obviously a partisan political operative, but that's not a crime. I was initially hoping the story was going to be that the WH wrote and released the "re-imagined" remarks by the CEO and he was blowing the whistle on them. It does seem like he's not the best candidate, although I doubt those particular remarks were said in anger since he was speaking to a friendly audience.  But, yeah, I gather he tends to shoot his mouth off. 

The thing that frustrates me is that I would prefer to just not hear one way or another what a candidate's religious views are (or if they attend church, etc; I actually don't care if Obama goes to church except insofar as his failure to do so is hypocritical), but it's clear that the media is intent on forcing the issue if the candidate is known to be conservative.  Another case in point is Fiorina's debate in which she was given a lot of social con questions, completely off topic, when of course her expertise and focus is elsewhere.  They did the same with Palin. 

They are not content to allow people to hold socially conservative (or I'd say "traditional") views on morality in their personal life -- they have to force conservative candidates to mouth some namby-pamby platitudes. 

Many of you will laugh, but Mitt Romney actually had a really good response to one of these types of questions recently.  I'll see if I can dig up the quote.  But basically he had a really unassailable way of saying "no comment" (or "none of your beeswax") when asked about some morality issue.

Bears repeating.  The government needs poll workers and ballot processors.  The parties and candidates need observers.  I am concerned with the integrity of the process and I want to see a chain of ballot custody that is observed at every step by non-Democrat witnesses.

I've done some footwork for the Republican Party and I've signed up to work Election Day and during the early voting period for the City of Denver.  From the training I've had so far, I am more optimistic that there are sufficient controls in place to prevent the kind of fraud we have seen in Washington and Minnesota.

The other day I was thinking that all I saw were 'Linda' signs....a lot of them and I hadn't seen one Blumenthal sign.  I finally figured out why....McMahon's signs are dark blue background with her name 'Linda' in bold white letters.  Impossible to miss.  Saturday I came across a Blumenthal sign....white background with his name in very light blue, thin letters.  If you don't focus on it, you'd swear it was a blank white sign.

I agree that those few pounds over provide a cushion for when illness strikes. My aunt lost all of her weight in her bout with pancreatic cancer. If she hadn't been heavy to begin with, she'd have succumbed that much sooner. But then, there's the argument that had she been light, her body might have had the strength reserves that being overweight exhausted, either to prevent or postpone the onset of cancer. There's research using mice that proved extended life expectancy for those remaining on the lean side. No telling what they were feeding those mice. Same goes for the nutritional quality contained in chemically induced and processed food today.

Don't misconstrue -- I'm not promoting Romney as a candidate, but I have to say I don't know of any instances while he was Gov of MA where he was pushing his LDS views/agenda on the people of MA. 

I see Romney and Palin as very similar in this regard.  Personally, there are things from each of their religious lives/views with which I am not comfortable, but I think neither demonstrated difficulty in separating their religious beliefs from their responsibilities as governor. 

My point about Pelosi is that she (or, "we," since I'm also Catholic) also hold some beliefs that lots of folks outside our religion think are wrong-headed or just plain nutty, but she is never peppered with questions about those beliefs.

What I liked about Romney's statement was the part about not explaining his Church's doctrines to others.  It's not his role as a public official to do that.  Look at what a hack job Pelosi did when she tried to do that. 

Basically, you could take any person who subscribes to a religion that has a measure of Church authority and disqualify them.  And, even as a person of faith, I could pick apart anyone's religion and make them defend stuff that seems very outside the mainstream.  What does that accomplish?  What matters is what people do when they hold positions of authority, not what they do in their churches, synagogues, and temples.

Of course, but religion is such an easy target that very few politicians can resist. As for the press? Well, they are beneath contempt when it comes to their handling of religion.

My religion says that if I mix certain materials in my clothing I should be put to death, and that menstruating women are not to be touched. I could go on and on, but the vast majority of these prohibitions are archaic and almost universally ignored.

The only religion I can think of that actually takes these things seriously is Islam, but curiously that's the only one that the press doesn't make fun of. I wonder why?

It's slightly more of a reach than WA-3 for a couple of reasons.  First of all, the advantages of incumbency are still real in dull, leaden, sense for non-controversial incumbents (yes, even in this uniquely anti-incumbent year...).  Larsen's not so overly-long in his tenure that the sorts of 'old man' arguments that are succeeding against Skelton & Spratt.  Nor is he especially controversial or disliked on a personal level -- the only way to run on him is against his record, which is why Koster really *does* have a shot this year that he wouldn't otherwise have had.  But I don't know that it's going to be enough in a state that is still much more comfortably Democratic, even in this region, than the rest of the nation. 

The real key will be Rossi.  If he wins -- as I believe he will now -- and manages to run up a decent margin (say 3-4%, that's all, just some genuine separation) then I think that's enough to take Koster over the top. 

If he really piles on, and the bottom drops out for Murray at the end -- I think this less likely, her floor is really 46% IMO -- then Adam Smith goes down as well.  (But only if.  I don't see voters in WA-9, which is mostly centered around Puget Sound and includes Joint Base Lewis-McChord as well as the capital, going out to vote for Patty Murray and NOT Adam Smith.)

I would surmise that when at flight ops and engaged against hostile targets he stays pretty busy either in the cockpit or on the flight deck.

I don't know how it is now over in the sand pit, but out on Yankee Station for 60 days at a time flight ops went round the clock for a long long time with few breaks.

The amazing thing was that more people didn't get killed due to exhaustion working in a dangerous environment than actually did. 

So when here in the States for a short break from that I don't begrudge our current Navy guys any slack time at all (and I know that there isn't much of that either).
