I started having similar problems with my "old" toilet when I went to the "green" policy of "yellow is mellow and brown flush it down" and I am on a septic tank.

The toilet paper would build up in the drainage pipes because it didn't get flushed enough to wash it all the way to the septic tank. The it would harden up. Had to tell wifey that any time she put toilet paper in the toilet to flush it regardless of the "color" of the water.

Screw green, its bullshit anyway. There is no real water shortage. There is a "water distribution" problem compounded by eco-nazi laws.

Similar story here in the People's Republic of Santa Fe. Several years ago, the wise sages who run our fair city passed an ordinance requiring that for all new construction, every toilet that would be installed as part of that construction would have to have a matching retrofit of a low flow toilet in an existing installation. They also instituted a rebate program for low flow toilet retrofits.

After several years of this, the city began experiencing problems with the sewer system, insufficient volume to keep them clear or to maintain the proper amount of water in the sewage processing pond. They never learn.

I have the same reaction to these eco features being forced on us, but I have to say that in this case, I'd go ahead and buy the new models. 

My Whirlpool duet washer (front loader) and dryer ("eco" model) both work great.  Much better than my old ones.  The dryer is lightning fast, even in eco mode, and the washer does a better job washing with less soap, so it's cheaper to run even here in Utah where water is cheap/plentiful (I bought it while I was living in CA).  Plus, they're stackable which means you can put them in a lot more locations.  The washer also has the advantage of no central agitator column.  In my old washer, sheets and beach towels used to get wrapped around the column on occasion - a real pain.  And, it's easier to unload the front-load washer than it is a top-loader, imho.

  Curious here--recently we had a change in our recycling pickup, previously they required separation of paper, glass and plastic--now it all goes in a common container. Makes me wonder if it's separated at the recycle center, or are they burning it? Our company made a big to-do about doing away with 3 bins, but offered no explanation why this all came about. 88 OTOH, the low-water washing machines my apartment installed aren't worth shit. There's not enough water to carry away the soil, it just gets re-deposited on the fabric.  Without bleach, the dishrags and towels and gym clothes smell just as vile coming out as going in, and the bleach doesn't get sufficiently rinsed either, so the fibers continue to get weakened/eaten after drying. 

The approach is probably fine for light synthetic fabrics that don't get spilled on or muddy or sweated in (officewear), but that can't be a big percentage of the nation's laundry. I can't imagine how awful it would be if I had toddlers or teenage boys.

AND I also can't find color-safe (non-chlorine) bleach anywhere but the grocery store.  Target and WalMart dumped it for non-bleach "colorsaver" additives at 3x the price.  *spit*

If you have oil (alklyd) painted trim, walls, porches, decks, etc you have to prime or sand to repaint them. Oh NO! They say, you just have to prepare your surface. Bullshit. It can be made to stick but it still doesn't stick as well. So bite me EPA.

It's not mandatory in my town yet...there was a bin at my apartment for paper/cardboard and one for plastic/glass, but people kept filling them with food waste and kitty litter and furniture, so the collection company took it away and refuses to give it back.  Bwahahaha.  (Holdren and the eco-fascists are gonna be doing a lot of killing to get the the citizenry they want for their totalitarian paradise.)

Years ago, my mother bought a "report" from them, detailing our alleged "family tree."

I decided to check it out, as best I could. Turns out 95% of our so-called relatives were nothing more than people with the same last name (and there aren't many), and those I contacted didn't share any relatives with us for at least three generations.

Older members of my immediate family didn't know any of the names on our "genealogy chart."

Oh, and Ancestry.com totally missed out on the rather basic fact that my ancestors changed their last name in the mid-1800s after someone in the family did something scandalous....

NRSC Blitzes Sestak: The NRSC is going up with its first IE ad in Pennsylvania on Wednesday. The ad, provided to Hotline On Call, hits Rep. Joe Sestak (D) hard on the stimulus, health care reform and cap and trade, using clips of Sestak interviews.

While Republican Pat Toomey has led Sestak for many months, the NRSC's decision to spend millions in the Keystone State shows they can't take the race for granted. President Obama and Joe Biden's rally last weekend certainly helped rally the African-American base in Philadelphia, which needs to turn out in force for Sestak to win.

While it is the first time the NRSC has launched its own ad in the Pennsylvania race, it is worth keeping in mind that the committee has already given $1.7M to former Rep. Pat Toomey's (R) campaign in coordinated campaign funds.



NRSC pours millions into a race that's already effectivly won, instead of states where it would help.Sounds about par for the course....

I am a man, which means that I will continue to cram things into the washing machine until the lid won't close.  Mrs. Reason cringes when she hears the tub banging against the frame when it gets off-balance on a load of towels and I have to run to stop the machine and fix the problem.

In fairness, I think the first 7 years of our marriage when we were renting crappy apts with only a dank basement shared laundry room, I think he did most of it.  Then, when we had our own machines, he'd so some, but never the folding after drying.  But once we moved to CA his job was so stressful, that I took it over. 

I tend to overload washers, too.  So far, no problems with this front loader.

I was looking up the noise issue and found some charts comparing them.  It looks like Bosch makes some super quiet washers, although they may be tailored for the Euro market where they tend to have the laundry facilities in the living spaces more than we do.

LOL, that reminds me of one of the guys I used to be on shift with sitting around the Control Room on the graveyard shift talking years ago.

He had recently been divorced from a marriage that he had been in since literally out of high school. He was complaining because he was going to have to go and buy a new dryer that morning instead of going to bed after he got off shift.

According to him it had quit drying the clothes. When we went through the troubleshooting routine he said "yeah the dryer body is getting hot but the cloths are not getting dry". So I asked him the simple question first "how often are you cleaning the lint filter?". 

His response "what's that?". Needless to say the rest of us had a good laugh out of that.

We have "mingled" recycling, and yes it is semi-automatically sorted.  Oversimplifying, it all goes onto a conveyor belt, passes under some magnets that will pull off the metal, passes over some fans that blow off the paper, and the leftover is non-magnetic metal and plastic.  Everything gets a once-over by a human to make sure nothing wound up in the wrong place.

I'm not too bent-out-of-shape over rinsing recyclables.  It's not like I put a lot of effort into running some water through the soup-can before putting it in the recycle bin.  Growing up, my parents would give food-trash a quick rinse before going in the garbage simply to take an edge off the stink.  I give the recyleables about the same treatment.  You don't need to give everything a thorough washing, as it gets several more washes during sorting and processing.  "They" just don't want a peanut-butter jar still 1/4 full, so you are instructed to wash the food-recyclables out.

Anything that requires soap or any more effort than a hot-water rinse gets put in my trash.  I'm not gonna deal with rinsing out a take-out container that's turned into a science project...

As it is, we have a recycling cart of equal size to our trash cart.  The trash cart is usually 2/3 to 3/4 full each week; three kitchen-bags of trash and two or three plastic grocery-sacks of trash from the bathrooms.  The recycle cart is almost always filled to the brim.

Again, I've not no problem with recycling.  Yeah, it's usually associated with enviroweenies, but really, I can buy off on being a good steward of the planet.  I can't imagine both of those carts full of trash going to the landfill.

My wife used to be against recycling when we first got married.  She too thought it was silly to "wash the trash," too.  I told her that was fine, she was free to throw away whatever she wanted, but I was gonna do my thing.  Not sure what, but over time some sort of guilt thing kicked in I guess, and it rubbed off on her.  She sees how much goes into the recycle cart, and comments about how nonsensical it would be for all of it to go to the landfill.  Now she's started to nip at her relatives in other cities who offer curbside recycling but don't do it.

The cost for a city to implement curbside all washes out.  If the city does it right (yes, yes, YMMV), then the cost of implementing it is balanced out by the money they make selling off the recycling.  The companies that take in the recycling perform a service.  Markets dictate whether or not there are takers for their service.  City councils will decide if the revenue from selling off their recyclables is worth the cost of implementation.  Packaging companies will decide if the cost of the made-from-recyclables products are profitable.

If the worst thing your city is doing in your mind is offering a recycling option, then you must live in a pretty awesome city.

I will caveat this with cities that are now mulling over assessing "fees" for people they deem aren't recycling enough.  That's bullshit.

Recycling is a racket for the cities and counties, nothing but a new source of swag. When they did it here at the request of some "concerned" eco-tard ladies club they did it via a new tax added to your property tax as a separate assessment plus you had to buy these special crap yellow bags to throw garbage in which was another tax that was dependent on how much you threw away that was not in the "recycle" bins.  

In truth, there is only one thing that recylers will accept for turn in from any of these collection points and that is scrap metal. Mostly that is aluminum cans. Other scrap metal goes for good price as well. The rest of the stuff that you spend all that time separating is all mixed back together again and dumped in the same landfill as the garbage just like it used to be 100 years ago. 

There never has been a "shortage" of landfill space and a properly built landfill is zero threat to the water supply. The whole thing is just another eco-tard racket.

The trick with landfills isn't a lack of space on the entire face of the planet.  The challenge, from what I've seen in my dealings with my city and with WM Inc is finding a place that will be far enough away to appease all the NIMBYs, still be under city jurisdiction, and still be close enough that all your trucks aren't going through massive amounts of fuel to get there and back.  Not only do you have to deal with current NIMBYs, but also potential future NIMBYs not currently there, but who may or may not be there in 30 years.
