I think you expect too much of a Republican House with a likely slight Dem majority Senate.

There's no "repealing" anything with Obama still in the White House.  The best they can do is try to not fund it.. but most of it doesn't kick in until 2014 anyway.

2012 has to be the next goal.. kick Obama out and retake both houses of Congress and then repeal this crap.

What they have to do in the next 2 years is do whatever they need to do to improve the economy.. settle the tax issues.. defeat any new regulatory crap being forced on businesses.. if.. if the economy turns around, the GOP will get the credit.. and that will help with the 2012 goal.

16 Looking at all the papers this morning there really isn't much out there in the way of news.

Yeah, the 9th court in a 3 judge panel ruled that AZ can't demand proof of citizenship to register to vote, something the courts have upheld in the past, but that's the 9th. I guess the new strategy for the libs is to bankrupt AZ in legal costs.  Too bad there is no way to recover costs from the incompetent and biased judges personally.

The other thing I found disappointing was from the last Gov debate last night. The two candidates discussed the new I-73 corridor to Myrtle Beach from NC. They only differed on how it would get paid for. Sheehan wants to make it a toll road, Haley doesn't. I am opposed to all toll roads but that is not the problem.

The problem is that this road is totally worthless for the State of SC. It only benefits Myrtle Beach and NC (in the South). It doesn't connect ANY of the population centers in SC and it runs just inside the SC border by a narrow margin in its route to the beach. For all practicle purposes it is a NC road but SC will have to pay for a substantial portion of the cost. I throw the BS flag. Run it all in NC and cut us out of it altogether.

Arizona has its own District--the court that recently ruled against it on its border enforcement law.  For appellate purposes, it is part of the Ninth Circuit--along with CA and most of the Pacific west.  Arizona isn't big enough to have its own Circuit--but CA is, and there  has been talk of splitting CA out of the Ninth, which would give AZ, NV OR and WA their own Circuit.  So far though, only talk.

Then after that, tell the public they tried to veto it, which was the will of the voters in 2010, so now they will move on to defunding it.

Its clear they can't veto it in the 2010-2012 congress. It's not possible. However if they can justify defunding it, then I think it will be the first step towards delaying Obamacare long enough until the Republicans regain the Senate and the Presidency.

I don't understand how you can make a ruling like that with a straight face.

1) States determine eligibility to vote (ie, legal residence required; a Cali resident can't vote in AZ). If you aren't a citizen or a legal immigrant, then you can't possibly be a LEGAL resident of that state.

2) Voting is wholly a state matter. Where is the federal government or any federal court granted the power to decide what the rules are for a given state; the only requirement is that those rules apply EQUALLY.

What do y'all think PJ & Co will do with the second Hobbit film?  I've been trying to think how Wingnut can expand the single Hobbit novel into more than one film, but I'm pretty sure they can't stretch that over more than three hours.  I know the second movie is supposed to bridge the time between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but does anyone have any specifics?

Y-Not: Agreed about the Silmarillion.  I've read bits of it here and there, but that's across years.  It's not really a tome that can be turned into a film.  I wonder about a TV series, though.  Some kind of sweeping mini-series.  It could work, if the scriptwriters tightened up the story and got excellent actors to portray the characters.  There's a lot of good material there, but it's daunting and dense.

I re-read The Hobbit recently (it was never my favorite) and I don't see how you get more than one movie out of it either.

What I hope they do is somehow capture the deep magic of Middle Earth, but I'm not sure there's really the material in The Hobbit to do that, unfortunately.  LOTR was the vehicle for that, but he chose to emphasize the dark elements of the plot line and didn't (imho) really give fair treatment to what was being lost from Middle Earth.  The Hobbit is much more of a children's book.

I agree about the Wizards, there were 5 I think, and they were sent for a reason, which is never revealed. Radagast hardly got a mention, and nothing of the others besides Sauruman and Gandalf.

I work at Walmart and she works part-time so she can look after our four month old little girl. She's also going to go on Medicaid. It really, really sucks. Look, I'm a conservative.  I consider myself pretty darned conservative on most things, but that doesn't mean there isn't a role for government.  (I suppose if I were a Libertarian I'd feel differently... one reason I am not a Libertarian and never will be.)  I criticize a lot of public programs, but the fact of the matter is that there is good being done out there, even by public employees.  My own dad was a social worker/probation officer in DC for years and years and years.  He was part of a broken system, but he was a small part of the system that was actually doing good. 

My own situation has become very precarious over the past couple of years.  We'll either get through it or we won't -- the jury is still out.  But we simply do not have the network of family and friends who can help us if the worst happens.  We struck out on our own when we were young and live far from any of our family.  If certain things fall the wrong way, we'd be in the same boat as you. 

People talk tough on these blogs, and I guess some people actually believe what they write, but I think in a lot of cases folks who have not experienced the sorts of bad luck that some of us have just really don't realize how quickly things can tip the wrong way.  I've read some ridiculous things on the unemployment threads (especially at HotAir) where it's clear the folks writing have never been in a position where they didn't have the security of a job they couldn't lose and family near by to bail them out.  It makes me want to jump through the screen and strangle them, but I think they are just really naive. 

Do not feel guilty.  It won't help and it's not "right."  You have an obligation to take care of your family, especially your child, and it is certainly nothing to be ashamed of to use the resources available to you.

Speaking for myself, Joffen, I, too, hold strong conservative views, but my problem is not with welfare as a whole.  it is with the out of control EXPLOITATION of welfare by people who just don't want to go out and find a job, and who think that the world somehow owes them something.  That sense of entitlement is what is ruining this country and what has led to our government's crazily out of control spending.

That said, there are many, many people who go on welfare for the very reasons you stated: they need to. They need the help, but they don't want to stay on the public teat forever.  They feel a sense of rightful responsibility for themselves and their family, and they see welfare only as a means of survival until they can get back on their feet.  Everyone falls on hard times; there's no shame in that.  What's important is that you do what you're doing and keep your eye focused on how you can better your situation through hard work and initiative.  Keep offering that example to your children and you'll raise good, honest children who will be a benefit and a blessing to this country in the future.

Don't feel like a loser. Your doing what you have to for your family. Those programs were originally intended to help people get on their feet, and nobody is against that. The problem is people who live on the dole as a lifestyle choice. You will get back on your feet, so in your case, the system is working like it was intended. I have a Russian engineer working for me. He arrived in this country with a wife, a baby, no job and no English and $15.00 in his pocket. Today he is working as an engineer, his wife is a doctor, his daughter is a doctor doing her internship. He too is highly conservative, but the system kept him alive until he could get his shit together. So take heart!
