Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789.

6 Happy Thanksgiving, you morons! We're having snow flurries here in bucolic Northeastern PA. It feels like I'm 16 again, and getting ready to go to the high school and play West Side Vo-Tech in the annual Thanksgiving Day game. To quote James Brown: "I feel good!"

May you all eat like gluttons, drink like Vikings, and sleep the sleep of the saved on your couches and easy chairs today.

Oh, and about holiday travel. Wouldn't do it if you live(d) in Mexico.

This from the LA Times...

Mexican expats warned about holiday travel home

The Mexican government advises them to travel in convoys and only in daylight because of the drug war.

The Mexican government is warning travelers driving into Mexico for the holiday season — many from Southern California — to move in convoys and only during daylight hours.

(snip)

The recommendation signals an acknowledgement that hold-ups and violence on Mexico's roads attributed to drug-trafficking gangs could affect the holiday travel crush.

(snip).

"When our own government says it's not safe to travel in our own country, it really makes you feel sad," Luis Garcia, head of one of the numerous clubs that Mexicans belong to in the Los Angeles area, said in a telephone interview from Lynwood..

22 And from those sorry papers a perfect illustration of why I no longer have a subscription to ANY newspapers.

Front page picture of workers in Lake City loading cotton bales with a caption describing highest prices in 100 years.

Story underneath said no profit for Pee Dee (central SC) farmers even though shoppers would get hit hard. No profit why?  Evil speculators bought up the cotton futures long ago when the price was low. They will get all the profits while poor farmers (who just ain't making it) and consumers get the shaft.

I threw down the paper before I got to the part where they recommended more Democrat farm subsidy programs and regulations for evil speculators.

Young boys need a certain degree of violence. Instead of playing "tackle" football outside, they'll probably spend most of the day punching me in my guy and kidneys.

Moreover, tossing the pigskin around is kinda a thanksgiving tradition. It's a shame. it's still freaking pouring here.

30 Getting tagged for on-call to cover Thanksgiving weekend sucks.

LOL, I have been hit with that many many times. What was bad was that the way we rotated it, if you got Thanksgiving on-call you also got Christmas.

We did it a week at a time, and depending on how many people you had qualified we were in either 4 week or 3 week rotation.

Had to not drink any alcohol, remain within 45 min of reporting, and not be in any kind of position where you could not respond (taking care of kids etc).

And for all that, you got paid NOTHING.

31 The smart thing for those farmers to do when prices go down is grow more cotton. Farmers everywhere have been doing it for centuries.

@9 Hasn't George heard of separation of church and state?

The First Amendment was ratified two years later.

I noticed, though, that he seems to go with the sort of generic-sounding God that is referenced in the Declaration of Independence, supporting the theory that he was a Deist. Mentions "providence", but never "Jesus" or "Christ". Interesting.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

May Warren Buffet drop dead and wander into hell.

“Warren Buffet is once more calling for higher tax rates, in advising the congress to revoke the Bush-era tax rates, and apparently to return to those of the Clinton administration—reminiscent of the elder Gates touring the country stumping for a reinstatement of a substantial inheritance tax. Aside from the fact that the deficit is not due to falling revenues, but almost entirely a result of astronomical federal spending increases since 2000, this bromide is quite pathological, this peddling of elixirs that the sellers do not drink. . . . Why do so many of these zillionaires chase the dollar almost to the exclusion of all else, and then only when wildly successful in a manner that the other 99% were not, suddenly in the twilight years want to make it tougher on others? Is that the price of penance?”

I'd like to wish a very happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow morons.

B'Gal and I are sitting in our new condo. Boxes are stacked up higher than our five-year-old granddaughter. We're both exhausted and bone-tired. We did manage to get the TV hooked up so we could watch football. The kids are coming over with food so we don't have to cook, which is good because the kitchen is still a mess, I think there's a stove in there somewhere.

Life is good. We have a lot to be thankful for.
