Homicide is the Philadelphia area's leading cause of workplace deaths

Homicide is the most common way to die on the job in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Tuesday.

One of five area workers who lost their lives on the job in 2009 died from a homicide, usually a shooting.

Among them was Oscar Medina Hernandez, 29, a father of two.

On Oct. 14, 2009, three robbers walked into Hernandez's bakery in Woodlynne, just outside Camden. One shot Hernandez while the others struggled to open the bakery's cash register.

On-the-job fatal injuries in the region totaled 66 in 2009, down from 84 in 2008.

"You want to jump up and down with joy that fewer people were killed on the job," said Barbara Rahke, director of the Philadelphia Area Project on Occupational Health and Safety, a workers' advocacy group.

"But then, so many people have been laid off," she said, skewing the data.

Employment in construction, one of the most dangerous occupations, is down considerably since the start of the recession in 2007.

Our monthly look at the 2012 Republican Presidential field for November finds the same thing it it does every month- a very close four way race. This time around itÂ’s Sarah Palin at 21%, Newt Gingrich at 19%, Mitt Romney at 18%, and Mike Huckabee at 16%. Ron Paul and Tim Pawlenty lead the second tier with 5% each, followed by John Thune at 3% and Mitch Daniels at 2%.

The Gingrich and Huckabee voters are going to be fine if someone else gets nominated. TheyÂ’re pretty happy with all the other candidates. The Romney folks perhaps are a greater concern for Republicans because some of them might actually vote for Obama if a Gingrich or Palin gets nominated.

As a so-con, I want to make it clear that we're not all drinking the Newt/Huckabee kool aid.  The election of either of those idiots would be a phyrric victory.  I wouldn't vote for them for city dog catcher.  Though, if they forced me, I'd have to pick either of them over Obastard.  Let's hope it doesn't come to that.  We've still got some time - let's work toward finding something better.

North Korea is highly likely to attack South Korea again, the South's spy chief said on Wednesday, as a flotilla of American warships led by an aircraft carrier left South Korean waters after a deadly attack.

Mitt, here's a clue: It doesn't matter. Romneycare may have been the most wonderful, well-designed program in the universe. But once it went into effect, it mutated and grew like all govt programs. That is the lesson, bonehead! So, if you really want to be President here are the words you need to say shortly after Jan 1: "Despite our best efforts in designing and enacting the Mass. Health Care Reform, it failed. It failed because govt is the wrong manager of any health care system. Obamacare is much more poorly designed than MHCR and will bankrupt the country. This tells me that the marketplace is the proper area for health care reform and reduced pricing. Think how cheap your big screen TV was, five years ago the same TV that cost you $1500.00 would've cost you $10k. Health care can be the same. Etc....etc...." Other than saying that, you absolutely will not win the primaries. Personally, I like Romney as VP for Palin assuming they can get along. And also assuming Romney won't go all Bush 41 on us after Palin finishes her second term and squander her legacy like Bush 41 squandered Reagan's.
