When I was in England a number of years ago, I visited Windsor on a Sat. flew back here on Sun, and Windsor burned on Mon.
I called my brother, who was living in London, and asked "Did I put out that last cigarette at Windsor"?
Without missing a beat he replied "You know, Scotland Yard was just asking me about that".
I liked London. And o man the history. Plus got to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower.

I think that failing to have the state capital moved to Calumet during the height of the copper boom took the wind out of their sails, so the threat to secede was a petulant reaction to that. Still, now that the shores of Gitchee Gumee are no longer tainted by Dimbulb representation in the House, perhaps the time is ripe for a concerted push on all three fronts.
Mom still lives in the U.P.. As for me, requiring gainful employment, I left to seek better opportunities long ago. Now I'm living in a state where less than one inch of snow in the late afternoon can bring homeward traffic to a halt by practically any route you might take. Pathetic, just pathetic.

Amazingly, yes. But I kind of cheated. We're still in disarray from the move, so a couple of weeks ago we went to a local indoor 'farm stand' and loaded up on Utah goodies (preserves, dried fruits, honey, etc) which we used to make gift boxes for our scattered relatives. Expensive to mail, but we got shopping for 5 different families done in one swell foop.
Hubby and I only do stockings for each other, but we use nylon thigh-high stockings, so it's a bit of a challenge getting things the right size/shape to fit in them. I *think* I'm done, but won't know until I try to stuff the stocking. It was hard to shop for him this year as I don't know the stores here and am still trying to avoid loading up on sweets and bad-for-you foods b/c of his diet.
He was done for me over a week ago, but he does his shopping on the internet. I can't/won't do it that way -- I need to see/feel the stuff I'm buying.
For your spouse (if you have one), you could fall back on a night at a nice inn or hotel. Very romantic and easy to buy... plus, no wrapping!

It's popular in some on-line circles to consider every positive development for conservatives a huge failure because it doesn't solve every problem instantly and permanently. It's a dumb way of looking at things.
We'll be competing against Liberals (foreign and/or domestic) every day for the rest of our lives, there is no "end date", and there is no final victory. So spending those lives bemoaning every setback, but never enjoying a single advance, will turn us all into useless, bitter, old wrecks and it won't help our political cause one bit.

The Indianapolis Symphony did an entire show this year playing along to the cartoons with the classical music that accompanied them in the originals.
The conductor was on the radio and said that many of these cartoons (made in the late 30's and the 1940's) were made when Warner brothers had a huge, classically-trained studio orchestra. He said that many were European refugees from Hitler and that the orchestra had a huge concentration of talent, which is why this type of music was used.

Yeah, I'm a bit weary of this shrill finger-pointing every time a Republican is less than perfect. The Scott Brown stuff yesterday, for example, was laughable (not necessarily here, but over at Hot Air). People are living in a fantasy land if they think that he's not better than the alternative.
But I do think that the Republicans should try to remove their earmarks - if Orrin could do it, they can too - and I do think the GOP was losing the media battle over the "work through Christmas" budget battle, which is sad as Reid is a greasy-haired asshat so it should be easy to look better than him.

I hope the Royals stand firm on it.

McConnell isn't particularly charismatic, but he has managed to hold his side together and stop the omnibus, get the tax cuts compromise through, and shame senators into not voting for those earmarks. That's a lot, and a big change.
Boehner has done a good job up against Pelosi, and all I read about him is that he cries. Well, tough. At least he has a heart and a love for this country. Pelosi is a cold harridan who will never care one bit about people not getting the American dream.
I have seen this behavior since Bush 41 was in office. So many on our side write peopel off if they do one thing they disagree with. Reagan wouldn't have been good enough for these people if he were in office today.
You ask a good question about the removal of the earmarks. I am going to try to find out about that today.

I think part of what's happening - not so much with regards to McConnell but with many of the other Rs in office - is that there's a lot of posturing happening in anticipation of the 2012 elections. Candidates' supporters are quick to point out the flawed actions or statements of potential opponents. It hits the folks in office the hardest because they're actually doing something - voting on bills or putting up bills for consideration or running state governments etc. So Ryan takes heat and Christie takes heat and Pence and the rest of them, from the supporters of people who are not governing right now. I think that's a crying shame. I wish we could have a 6 mos moratorium on casting everything in light of the next POTUS election and just focus on the pragmatic aspects of governance right now.
Having said that, I don't trust our Senators very much. They're too quick to want to play nice. We need to watch them like hawks. I just don't think that we should over-react or call them RINOs or say how someone else (who isn't in office) would be so much better. That's not particularly helpful, imho.

Also, back in the day everybody was familiar with classical music, which had a seat at the cultural table so to speak. Now, classical music is viewed as "not real music" and it's not being taught or played in most schools. Budget cuts fall hardest on the arts anyway, then add in the belief among the leftists who run our schools that classical music is part & parcel of everything they hate about Western Civilization, so it's not surprising classical music is on the ropes. Plus, you have to be an actual musician who can read music and stuff, and that's hard for the likes of today's artists.

Ryan and the rest can cut other spending next yearto make up for the spending that was in the tax cut bill. If those tax rates had gone up in January, who knows how much damage it would have done to the economy?
This is an example of what we were talking about earlier, the constant criticism of everything that isn't perfect. Krauthammer always acts like Obama is a normal person. That is wrong, as I have said before. We cannot assume we would have got a better deal in January.
I do, however, agree that Obama's base won't desert him. Unlike conservatives, they do stick with their guy, which is why they have more success than they should.

Barry had to deliver an extension of tax rates of some sort, the question is how much and how long. Even Democrat voters pay taxes, and seeing your rate on the first federally taxed dollar rise by 50% would have even Blue Staters looking for Democrat blood. Besides, Bill Clinton gave the game away when he said this was the best deal "we" (Democrats) were going to get. Why? Taxes are real, even to Democrats. And Barry ran out of crucial "independent" and "moderate" voter support as evidenced by something called November 2010.
Krauthammer: "Remember the question after Election Day: Can Obama move to the center to win back the independents who had abandoned the party in November? And if so, how long would it take? Answer: Five weeks. " Now, that is his assessment and prediction. It will take a few months into 2011 to see if he's right.

We cannot assume we wouldn't get a better deal either. Barry was in a corner, not the other way around, because the opposing party will control the House in 2011. Does one somehow conclude that a Congress with a GOP House and Dem Senate would be more liberal and cooperative than a fully Dem Congress?
Yesterday, I just heard an outspoken supporter of the deal, Guy Benson, declare that if the Dems changed the death tax rate from 35 to 55 percent, otherwise changing nothing, then the GOP should vote it down. Oh wait, I thought we were all pragmatic and stuff? So a lousy 20 percent on estates past $5 million is the Hill Upon Which To Die? Benson had been defending the deal strongly since it was announced. Why is that a bridge too far but those of us asking for the GOP to bargain harder are Purist Dreamers? Please.
For myself, I don't consider the deal a disaster at all, just average. We could have bargained longer and gotten more, as Bill Clinton admitted. Yet it doesn't suck altogether. A grade of C+, or B+ if we grade using the Obama curve.

The Asians get it. Anyone willing to be disciplined gets it. Kids in urban ghettos taking part in grant funded classical string, piano, percussion and choral programs "get it".
The point is that ideals are taught at home. When the ideal is tv and computer, there it is. How hard is it to have some Mozart in the background during dinner? It isn't as if Mozart's royal peers actually listened to his music, busy with frivolity, so there'd be no sacrilege.
And this forfeiture of our cultural heritage is a very recent phenomena that grew via technology, that element which "provides" all things to the masses. The radio has been blamed, replacing the ideal from the high brow made available to the masses with the lowest common denominator demanded by the masses. Today, that being the slime of rap. Laissez faire.
