Luckily for me even an effete, RINO, book-learning nancy-boy like myself could still pick up most of these skills by osmosis just by growing up in the South during the 70's and 80's.
LOL, I grew up in the South in the 50s. I can do every one of those things.

Fat lot of good it will do, since the good Senator is now in place for 6 more years. What a tone-deaf way to thank those of us who helped re-elect him.
I told him, "whenever you're on the same side of an issue as Harry Reid and the "republican" senators from Maine, you likely need to rethink your position."
I just don't understand how these people can't get simple votes correct.

Gosh, I wonder why Nancy P. never did this?
House Speaker-to-be John Boehner is planning to install the first-ever women's restroom next to the floor of the House of Representatives.
Boehner's office says he'll direct the Architect of the Capitol to convert an office into a ladies room just steps away from where lawmakers cast votes and debate legislation. It mirrors the space occupied by a men's restroom on the other side of the House chamber.
Female members of the House have long complained that while their male colleagues can duck in and out of a men's room right next to the chamber, their closest available restroom is much further away in the Congressional Women's Reading Room, across the ornate Statuary Hall filled with sculptures of prominent Americans.
The new restroom will be located in what's now the office of the House parliamentarian — the official who advises lawmakers on legislative procedure. That office will be relocated.
Boehner said the change was "long overdue."
When he takes the gavel in January, Boehner will replace the first female Speaker, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
The new, Republican-controlled Congress will have 71 female members.
A ladies' room adjacent to the Senate floor was installed in 1993, after the so-called "year of the woman" when five were elected to that chamber.
Boehner's move comes shortly after rumors circulated that the new speaker might seek to do away with a private room in the Capitol where women can breast-feed or pump breast milk.
His staff rejected the claim.

How exactly? Initial claims fell, but that's almost meaningless, since that by now reflects largely new adults unable to find work. The fact that the actual number rose, going into the holidays isn't good news. Most corporations that don't swell the ranks during the holidays either freeze or cut in the fourth quarter, to make the year end numbers look better.
What was the figure again for monthly job creation required merely to accomodate new adults entering the work force for the first time?
And can anyone cite that this number is being met or exceeded?

Yeah, yeah. Considering how long people have to wait for a plumber to show up, that ain't much of a threat.
P.S. Although I have actually found a local plumber who was very impressive. I also learned that assholes who clean drywall tools in a second floor sink leave behind presents in the form of 'inorganic' clogs. Accoding to the plumber, anything strong enough to clear that would also ruin the pipe. Joy.

Have you seen these Sharkbite plumbing fixtures? They literally snap on to pipe. These things are great. My house had nothing but the cheap gate valves, which fail to seal since they're old, so I'm fighting a trickle of water wherever I'm doing a repair. The Israelis at the minimum should have bombed forward Syrian positions near Lebanon during the 2006 Lebanon War, but the fact that they didn't is understandible, given who was in charge *ahem, Ehud Olmert, cough!*.
Since then, Gaia only knows how much the Hezzies and the Syrians have upgraded (with Nork help) and repositioned their missile batteries. I remember reading the most ominous report in 2007 that several Syrian engineers had died trying to affix chemical weapon payloads onto several of their missiles (Scuds?). The Israelis will still win the conflict, but the cost will be much higher than if they had dealt with the snakes 4 years ago.

As for your leaky valves, find the main shut off, turn it off and replace the valves. I really like the ball valves because they last forever but you can't use them in applications where you want to regulate flow. They're for on/off applications only.

Good question. And the length of the stopper is often in- sufficient when replacing the faucet. You either cobble extensions or replace the pipe below as well. Which is yet another pain. My house is a mix of galvinized iron, copper and PCVpiping, with just a hint CPCV for the kitchen. It's a melange of flood control.

The gate valve that constitutes the cut off from the street sucks too. That's the problem. I've been replacing gate valves with ball valves where possible. I just had to replace the hot water heater. I cut the supply pipe, watching the water drooling as always. I then slapped on the sharkbite valve, closed it off, and ta da! water stops. I then mated a piece of copper pipe to the bottom of that, then coupled it to a flex connection which terminated on the heater.
Eventually, I'm going to get another such valve, cut into the main supply and slap it in. it was $17, but it was worth it.

Install an Xtrol tank as close to the main valve as possible. They have an air chamber and bladder. You pump air into the chamber equal to the water pressure you want. (I think they have newer ones with a different name and slightly different features.)I live next to an industrial park and our pressure used to go over 200 lbs. on the weekends. A plumber was amazed our pipes never blew out. I installed the Xtrol tank about 25 years ago and haven't had a problem since then.

Its a list made by and for 20-35 year old apartment and condo dwellers. Tap a keg, choose a scotch, pour a beer, paddle a canoe, throw a football - nothing about things like how to use and store firearms safely, make basic plumbing or electrical repairs (and recognize when to put the tools away and call a plumber or electrician), speak in public (like at a school board meeting).
Oh, and as for picking up girls using your dog: when I was in college in the 70s, this was a classic frat boy move. They got a puppy in January or February, and walked him or her around the quad as the weather improved. Worked like a charm. Then, when the spring semester ended, the dumped the dog at the SPCA shelter and blithely went off to the Jersey Shore. I still get a blood pressure rise seeing some dipstick using a dog to pick up chicks.

RE: Outhouses. Yep, I've used them. My father grew up with one in NJ, but I've only ever run into them here in NH at State Parks and a few homes. One of my friends growing up had no electricity and no bathroom, so her family had an outhouse. Sweet heavens to murgatroyd, I agree with beanervt: you do not linger in the outhouse during a New England winter; especially not at night!
Yeah, NH was the place a few years ago where that one pervert hid under an outhouse to watch the family use the facilities. The young daughter saw him through the hole. How sick must you be to smear yourself in human waste and hang out under an outhouse hole JUST to get your rocks off? Just... ew.

Indeed. A real man drags out the shards of asbestos shingling that he has craftily saved, and asks one (or more) of the womenfolk to hold it whilst the men play with the torch. If they show reluctance, I ask them to stay close to the phone and be attentive for the smell of burning house. I usually get at least one 'volunteer'.

In WWII, the Nazi's had a secret plan to flood the Europe market with conterfeit banknotes with the goal of destabilizing their economy (lowering their montary value - basically cause ultra-high inflation). This plan was code named Operation Bernhard.
This is exactly what Obama is doing. He is forcing the Fed to print more dollars and flood the market with too many dollars which destabilizes our economy and causes ultra-high inflation (lowers the value of a dollar).
He is taking his 'ideas' straight out of the Nazi playbook.
Wasn't his grand ma (or suspected father) a Nazi sympathizer?

More plumbing stuff: after I replaced the gate valves under my kitchen sink with ball valves the water pressure increased to the point where I got wicked water hammers. So I installed one of these things that work like a captive air tank. They're small (about 4" long), easy to install and you can get them for copper and PVC. They work great.
Don't try making your own air chamber out of lengths of pipe because the water in them gets rank and they eventually get waterlogged.

Money. Lots of it. Consider that the NFL stadiums (Soldier Field sadly does not qualify) that would host the games are pretty much vacant during the summer, we have LOTS of these stadiums so that we don't have to build or upgrade any of them. They all are already configured to accommodate large crowds and a lot of press. And the cities that these stadiums are in have the hotel and transportation and infrastructure for the boatloads of fans that come, the US is close to the perfect spot for the tourney because most all the stuff is already here. There is literally no country that can say they can have 13 venues with capacities of around 70,000 available for however long you want.
Oh, and the last men's world cup hosted by the US in '94 had 97% of the seats sold, and still holds the record for the most fans ever. Even though FIFA expanded the field for the subsequent tourneys.

ZURICH — Presidents past and present voiced support for the United States' 2022 World Cup bid here Wednesday as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton appealed to FIFA chiefs on the eve of the crucial vote.
In a final formal presentation to delegates, Obama said in a video-taped message America would make an "excellent host" if chosen.
"Here in America passion for football burns stronger than ever. If we are successful we will make the world proud. The game is in us. I hope to have the chance to welcome all of you in 2022," Obama said.
Clinton meanwhile addressed voters in person at FIFA's headquarters, applauding the football body's social initiatives around the world.
"I believe that FIFA is the main reason that soccer has become a unifying force and not just an arena for tribal combat," Clinton said.
"I still remember going to see Chelsea when she was six or seven years old and thinking something magical was happening because finally here was a game where all you needed was a ball and a pair of shoes, that every American regardless of income or background could participate in," Clinton said.

kinda. it's a funnel attached to a tube. You close the bottom of the tube off with your finger, and pour a beer or multiple beers into the funnel. Then you have someone hold the funnel up and you put the tube in your mouth and suck down the beer(s) in a second or two.

Counterfeiting another nation’s legal tender is not only a crime – it is also an act of aggression. During World War II, Adolf Hitler produced British bank notes to destabilize England. Mao Tse Tung used phony money to undermine Chaing Kai Shek’s Nationalist government through inflation. The Soviets created passable replicas of African, European and other monetary instruments to damage local economies. But no one has ever engaged in this kind of economic warfare against the United States on a scale – or as effectively – as is now being waged by the regimes in Pyongyang and Tehran.
For more than five years remarkably accurate duplicates of U.S. $100 bills have been circulating overseas. Called "Supernotes" by our Treasury Department, Secret Service and FBI, they are printed on cotton-fiber paper using intaglio printing presses, the same type used by the U.S. Bureau of Printing and Engraving. The source of these nearly flawless notes is hardly a secret.
On January 26, 2006 in a White House press conference, President Bush asserted that, "We are aggressively saying to the North Koreans…don’t counterfeit our money." A Congressional Research Service Report two months later concluded that, "at least $45 million in such Supernotes of North Korean origin have been detected in circulation, and estimates are that the country earns from $15 to $25 million per year from counterfeiting." Later that year, Hezbollah – a wholly owned subsidiary of the repressive regime in Tehran – began flooding Lebanon with Supernotes. Thanks to Iran and North Korea there may be billions in "phony Franklins" floating around the world. The bills have also turned up here at home. (Col. O North)

Gates responded that while any loss of troops, particularly those in the field, is "potentially of concern for the force as a whole, I don't think any of us would expect that the numbers would be anything like the survey suggests, just based on experience. Plus you have the reality that they can't just up and leave."
This quote is all you need to know about the push to do this. Also, they blew off the survey results when it indicated that a mojority of Marines and soldiers in combat arms were against it. When the results don't suit them, they downplay them. When officers with private billeting (and dreams of stars) express support, then those results are heeded.
Utter bullshit.

The Sunday Times of London recorded a pair of executive committee members supposedly offering to sell their votes, and both were suspended. On Monday, the BBC aired a documentary alleging that several committee members took secret payments from FIFA's former marketing partner years ago.

But this will enhance the careers of the generals. And some politicians. And so we will do this. And note that they are dumping the issues of billeting on the troops. You will have to ask for billeting arrangements.Ask for accomodation and you get branded. And also note that no one is questioning why men and women aren't being billeted together, if orientation is not only of no consequence, but questioning it is a career killer. One law for me and another for thee.
And this will have the greated impact on the first term enlisted, who have to share the worst quarters and conditions. The career NCO or commissioned officer? They usually don't have to share, except on subs and small surface combatants.

There it is. There isn't an O-7 in the service who wouldn't suck a mile of cock to get that second star. Needs of the service be damned - they've come too far to let little things like morale, unit cohesion, readiness and combat effectiveness stop them now!

Agreed. And how many O-7s live in open squad bays? Or compartments? Or hotbunk? Notice that the service with the highest opposition (USMC) is the one with:
1. The highest percentage of combat arms to total strength
2. The worst housing in the Armed Forces

This has always been a problem, though history. Normally it takes a pretty serious war and a few military disasters to get rid of the dead weight. It's a damn good thing we have super weapons, because we sure don't have many George Pattons. If the account given in the book "Warriror's Rage" is to be believed, our top positions are seriously lacking the will to fight.

Buying Alcohol in Qatar
Where to buy alcohol in Doha ...
The only licensed shop you can buy alcohol at is the Qatar Distribution Company. They have only two shops in the country, one of which is in Doha. Nevertheless, the Doha branch, though hidden away in a dusty corner, is superb.

...Will someone please explain to me how you can have outdoor, air-conditioned anything? Were my parents wrong all those years ago when, as a young 'un, I'd be threatened with corporal punishment for leaving the front door open a little too long in summer? "You want to pay to air condition the neighborhood? Close the damn door!"
I don't even want to KNOW how they intend to make such places carbon neutral. That would seem to be an oxymoron: "air conditioned carbon neutral."

There is no rationale. There is only a politicial initiative, which vocal pressure groups want. And certain politicians are buying into it because there is no cost or discomfort to them. And career mad officers are enabling it. And the enlisted and mid grade officers will once again take it in the neck, just as they did when they were told that women were equals, except when it comes to work assignments, PT standards, and sexual misconduct (Tailhook).
Just as we heard a general standing on corpses at Ft. Hood to preach the marvels of diversity, so too we have hacks citing and dismissing their own survey in the same hearing. Add to that naked threats of dismissal unless everyone agees that 2+2 = 5. Except for the ones that want to be dismissed. There's a bit of irony there.

Up in the mountain huts in BC, the outhouse is the primary tool for sanitation. (some use the kind you incinerate daily, smells like auchwitz). The outhouse variety calls for kicking prior to use, to scare away the martens that occasionally come around for a treat.
Several years back, some poor schlub didn't give it the requisite kick, sat down, and had his privates severely, uh, rearranged by the marten down the hole.

With all these foreign interest bailouts, I think every American should be entitled to a free vacation anywhere we want anywhere in the world at least once a year. And while there, we should be entitled to be as loud and "ugly" as we want without getting a single sour expression from the locals. And also be provided free lodging, victuals, and transportation (but we'd pay for souvenirs). And if we choose NOT to take said free vacation, we should receive a reimbursement check from the country of our choice equal to what the cost WOULD have been had we gone there.
I believe this is sound fiscal principle.

Whichever, I'm betting that Osama Obama, Bernanke and Convict Timmy are gonna be pissed. It's almost worth waiting until Assange puts these documents up before doing his ass.

"I can't believe no one has picked up Gates' comments about slowly implementing the repeal with a process of training and education."
Am I the only person whose balls get frosty when I hear some bullshit phrase like "We just have to educate people" about some bullshit social idea?
No, I do not need to be "educated" because I know plenty about your fucking opinion, you illiterate, self-centered, hipster fuckhole. I just don't agree with it. Not only do I not agree with it, I think it's fucking stupid, ill-considered, and probably designed to construct some sort of pseudo moral highground for you to preach down to me from. So you need to bag up a bunch of dicks and chow down.

Out house? used one in Canada on fishing trip with bear claw marks on door. Also had good penthouse forum abridged versions lying around, in addition to nice float plane and cans of gas, make for big fire. Much fun.

It's more like a two-door Passat. Hard top convertible with a huge sunroof. Released in the U.S. in 2006, I think.
I've been really happy with it so far.

Dividend? Oh, back before they gave unsecured credit cards to illegal aliens with no way to track them down for the balance after they skip town and assume a different alias.

Mrs. Hick had her "summer" car in the shop recently and they loaned her this year's top of the line sedan. On that behemoth, in addition to heating for the front seats, you can select cooling as well as back massage.
Lots of techno-widgets in that car, i.e., lotsa stuff that can -- and will -- break.

I had a credit card with them, I paid it off over 3 years ago and closed the account, or so I thought - so just the other day I grabbed a copy of my credit report and there it is, still on my credit report as an "active account"!!! so I called them and had to wait on hold for like forever until I finally got someone with some modicum of intelligence that they will "look into it".
urgh.

Still will be very interesting to see how those bacteria solve the problem of the arsenic ions interacting with protein thiols. Compartmentalization? A novel enzyme? A "dummy" protein absorbing these ions once the arsenic chemistry is finished?
Knowing this biochemical adaptation also help explain that population in South America possessing the higher tolerance to arsenic concentration as well.

The rumor is Bank of America.

I'm none too pleased with Gates admitting he has to 'indoctrinate' the members of the armed forces in order to phase-in this silly pc social program.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'll have the guts to deploy it until spring.
I've had no leak roofs in ~2.5 years. Key is to keep the seals clean.
I hope I can keep this car, but we'll have to see. If I can't, I may look into a Wrangler.

Ditto. The trailer looks like the whole movie is totally fanboy. All of the little elements, like the unnecessary wearing of gloves. But the female outfits are not as form-fitting as we ought to expect.
It's also funny to hear "Targetu Scopo Openu" in Japanese. Don't they have their own words for such things?

You misunderstand. I'm sure that this education is aimed towards gays in order to learn how to integrate effectively into the military, since that was the stated goal. Wait....what? It's being aimed at the troops who having been serving faithfully? They're all being branded as ignorant by their own brass?
Never mind.

There is one liquor store, Qatar Distribution Centre, in Doha. To
purchase things there, you must have a license that can only be obtained
by having a written letter of permission from your employer. You can
only get a license when you have obtained your residency permit and you
will need to get a letter from your employer confirming your salary in
addition to paying a deposit for QR1000. The selection is good and is
like any alcohol selection of a large supermarket in the West. Prices
are reasonable although not cheap.
Alcoholic beverages are available in the restaurants and bars of the major hotels, although they are pricey. As far as non-alcoholic drinks go, be sure and hit some of the Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants and juice stalls. They whip some tasty and exotic fruit juice combinations that really hit the spot.
It is forbidden to bring alcohol in to the country as a tourist; at Doha airport customs xray bags and will confiscate any bottles of alcoholic drink. They will issue a receipt valid for 2 weeks to reclaim the alcohol on exit from the country.
