An article by David Fahrentold in today’s Washington Post notes that lame duck sessions of Congress violate the spirit if not the letter of the Constitution. For the letter of the law you need but look at the 20thAmendment, which was ratified on January 23, 1933. In essence, the amendment was meant “to kill off sessions like this—in which defeated legislators return to legislate.” But the devil was in the details of the new amendment, which didn’t actually abolish lame duck sessions of Congresses. Instead the law changed the end date of Congress’s legislative term from March to early January.

Reminds me of my Father; he cashed checks at his tavern -- one day he returned with his bag of cash from the bank (to start the day -- his morning drawer) and found an extra $10k!  He drove back to the bank and returned it...as he said to me, "it wasn't my money".  Just the right thing to do.

Last week, an Omnibus Budget bill died in the Senate.  It was not the end of efforts by Democrats to put together wide-ranging legislation, as they unveiled a new Omnibus dealing with public lands bills.

Nope...I was just reading this from The Hill:

The Senate unexpectedly approved food safety legislation by unanimous consent Sunday evening, rescuing a bill that floated in limbo for weeks because of a clerical error.

The Senate passed the Food Safety and Modernization Act on Nov. 30 by a vote of 73-25. But the bill was later invalidated by a technical objection because it was a revenue-raising measure that did not originate in the House — Senate staff had failed to substitute the food safety language into a House-originated bill.

The Senate today (Sunday) approved the Food Safety Modernization Act, a bill that expands the Food and Drug AdministrationÂ’s ability to regulate the quality of food and expand the agencyÂ’s powers to inspect food production facilities.

It goes back to the House now for approval.

Keep in mind, this bill was passed as part of the reaction to the "tainted peanut butter" bullshit. The plant that was at the bottom of the bad peanut butter was IN FUCKING VIOLATION of the existing law.

This is the way it always works with damn government regulation. It only punished honest companies. In this case it punishes the small farmer. ALL new regulations that ave been passed since the communists took over Congress in 2007 have benefited the big companies and kill small buisness.

46 Just read through Jazz Shaw's post over at HA. Alot of it rang really true. I did TAD as a MAA. (Restriction Barracks, transporting prisoners to and from Brigs, that sort of thing). There is nothing out of the ordinary with what Manning is going through than any other Military Prisoner was subject to.  Especially one that is on Suicide watch (And he's there for a reason, not just because random Jailer said put that soupsandwitch on suicide watch)

If Libs really knew what serving in the Military was like, I'm inclined to think they would generally freak out to a large degree on things not pertaining to Prisoner/Restrictee treatment. They are insulated by 40 years of the General Society being exposed to Military Life.

I mean how would they feel about port and starboard duty days with 16 hour days on your non duty days? If you caught a bad watch draw (which everyone generally tried to help us out, but you would get boned with the midwatch every now and again, meaning 24-36 hour days were regular) I did that shit during a resin discharge because we were short handed. I didn't go home for two weeks while in port because it was pretty pointless to leave the boat. Wife and I had dinner at the base subway a few times a week. that was it. And I didn't do anything wrong. I joked with my Chief that I wanted him to sign a time card for me so I could send it to my congresscritter. He freaked the fuck out on me.  I was joking.  Let alone Deployments blah blah blah. You get my drift.

And this wasn't even a Time of War type of stuff. And I wasn't a combat guy.  Just a bubblehead.

Yeah, they're much harder to cook as standalone items without getting a rubbery effect.  Somehow Mr Y-not has developed the ability to do so, so he's on scrambled egg duty for the rest of our marriage.  They are just egg whites with some coloring, I believe.  Not synthetic eggs per se. 

But I use them a lot (when I can) in recipes.  'Not sure if they'd work on CoolCzech's noodle dish since it looks like they're there for consistency/volume reasons. 

There are also these really expensive whole eggs you can get where the hens are fed a diet that improves the fat profile of the eggs.

We *had* to do a big switch last year when the man's blood work came back pre-diabetic, so that meant measuring everything and cutting bad fats, carbs, sugars, etc where ever we could.  It was a pain, but he got his profile back to normal in less than 4 mos, without drugs. 

Because we're foodies and like to be able to have things like foie gras, pork belly, duck, and other bad things like that, the compromise now is to use things like egg beaters when it doesn't matter and try to keep up with the higher fiber, lower sugar and lower fat alternatives when we can.  I'd rather splurge occasionally.

We were at a Christmas party at the man's office last week and there was a <$10 gift exchange (Secret Santa).  One fellow, who'd just had a major heart problem three weeks prior, traded for the "pork lover's" gift box (bacon mayo, pork rinds, etc).  The look on his wife's face was priceless! 

We love food, but in a way what we did was see the diet as a challenge and an adventure.  With a few exceptions, all that meant was shifting our diets toward the Mediterranean dishes we already liked and away from some of the (also delicious) high carb, high fat things we like.

Anecdotally, my blood pressure went down when I switched from margarine to butter.  And I prefer Eggbeaters in the morning so I can put cheese in them *hee* but they're 500% more expensive than real eggs, so it's real eggs for the duration.

So a few years ago the gov't advice was that losing a mere 10% of your body weight was sufficient to reduce your risk of evil stuff.  I ended up losing ~19% (math is hard!) over two years (on a mostly beer-bratwurst-cheese-donuts diet....), mostly by replacing "sitting around at the bar with friends" with "going for long walks alone", which is bad for my mental health, but no one cares about that!  

Now the gov't guidelines go by their fucking arbitrary height-weight chart. Doesn't matter how much weight I've lost, I'm still fat, and thus a subhuman menace to society.  Except on April 15, of course.

First, every night the local news does another feel good story about people (charities) coming together and giving toys to (mostly inner city) families in need.  In every story, more than half of the people in line have NFL coats & hats (with the tags still on), brand new tennis shoes, more than 3 gold chains around their neck, rings, etc. 

I haven't bought myself a new pair of shoes in 5 years.  I have no rings, etc., and my winter coat is as old as my shoes.

It is just like my friends that really did need to go to the food pantry and they came back with cookies, chips, tubs of icing, steak, roasts, etc.  They felt so guilty they gave some to us!  They also said that the people in line all had blackberries, playstation hand helds, $400 i-pods, etc.  The people in line also bitched because they weren't given enough steak, shrimp, etc.

Second, about the jive.  Last Christmas I was at a store and my kids were being unruley.  I pulled out a phrase I grew up with: 'Quit shucking and jiving.'.  Next thing I know a A American started calling me a racist, yelled for a manager, and insisted 'this racist' be kicked out of the store.  I stood there with my mouth hanging open thinking 'what the hell did she think I said?'

The manger came, asked what was going on, and this lady acted like I had punched her in the mouth while wearing a white robe.

I told the lady that I had din't mean anything by what I said and I grew up with that phrase and was taught that it meant dancing and moving around.

I then told her that if she called me a racist again, in front of my kids, she might as well call the cops cuz I was going to wipe the floor with her ass.  She didn't know me, and if she wanted to play the victim card, I could as well.  I turned to the manager and told him that the lady should be kicked out of the store because she was a black woman buying a chalkboard and everyone knows that she is telling the world that the world should be black and she really just want to 'erase the whitey'.

The bitch turned around and left the store in a huff.  The manager apologized to me and gave me 25% off my purchase that day, and thanked me for my snarky comeback.  Turns out that this shit happens everyday and corp. had told the manager to just give the AA shoppers the things in their cart for free.  He said it was a racket, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

Well, there he was. A man approaching in the pitch black up my front yard.

His one liner was that he was delivering bottles, before he turned and ran.

My dog didn't bark once during all of this. She remained sitting but leaning forward and her haunches raised just a bit off the floor, ready to go. She was (at the time) my recently acquired rescue dog. A beautiful Tervuren.

She is loving the snow.  I can't wait until we get a fenced yard (assuming we're able to move from this rental next year) so she can really romp around in it.  Right now I have to take her out on a really long lead, so she's not getting the full effect of playing in the snow.

She is pretty.  We worked like dogs (heh) trying to get her ears to stay tipped, but they popped up anyway, but they're set well on her head.  She has a very good head/muzzle overall.  I think the breeder said her eye set was a little off, but I don't think it's by much.  Of course, we'd love her if she was ugly, but it's nice that she's not!

Well, we (I) use a pin brush and what I think they call a greyhound comb, but not the furminator.  I've heard it can really tear up the coat.  But the most important is that we have her bathed/groomed monthly.  The great thing here is that it's a mobile groomer so I don't have to schlep out to Petsmart or some such place. 

Vacuuming is an unholy nightmare, but we've always had pets (cats) and on top of that there's all these 20-sided die lying around that inevitably get sucked up.  We average a new vacuum cleaner every other year!

i put up a story in the headlines you guys should check out. It is from the WSJ, it's about what we've learned from the Honduran "coup" thanks to wikileaks, and it isn't good.

It's essentially what we all suspected. The Obama admin knew Zeleya was trying to subvert democracy and was extremely corrupt. Indeed, with a lot of mortgages it looks like you're paying more on the mortgage than you really are.  My wife and I, for instance, have to pay mortgage insurance (we didn't have 20% to put down) as well as homeownders insurance (well, we don't have to pay that through the mortgage, but we do), and property taxes.  I bet, among all of those, they're adding 200 or more a month to my payment.

If the payment on a 15 year mortgage is too high for you...   call your lender and ask about Bi weekly payments.   You end up making a couple extra payments a year.

Mortgage interest is front end loaded.  So when you first start making payments on your house.. hardly anything goes to principle.. its all interest.  So make extra principle payments. 

Doesnt matter if its a 10, 15 or 20 year mortgage.. its all the same.. its front end loaded.

The worst loans were option loans.. where you had 3 choices each month.. the P and I, Interest only or less than interest only. (its deferring the payment to the end of the loan)  Which do you thin most people paid each month?  They now owe more than what they bought the house for... in a declining market.  They all came due in 5 years..  Now... those people cant refi because they owe more than the house is worth. They are walking.

California was big on those loans.  NOt surprising since the home prices in California are out of reach for most.

So.. I would not refi unless I had a crazy high interest rate.  I would just make extra payments.

I would NOT refi to a lower term... not in these days.  If a person does that and loses their job.. they are screwed. The wont qualify to refi back to 30 years.

Speaking from experience here.  I was in mortgage lending for 20 years.  Spouse and I refi'd to a 15 year term.. we had no problem paying it until spouse walked out and the mortgage industry tanked.  I was stuck with a huge payment and I did not qualify for my own home.

I had to sell it.  Sucked.. the payment before we refi'd was fine. I would have rather sent in all that extra a month for the few years we had it then be forced to sell the only home my son had ever known.
