To the consternation of builders and the delight of firefighters and municipal officials, every one- and two-family house built in Pennsylvania after Jan. 1 will be required to have fire-sprinkler systems.
The mandate - part of the 2009 International Residential Code and applicable to new construction, not remodeling - was challenged in Commonwealth Court by the Pennsylvania Builders Association and others after it took effect for townhouses this year.
The builders argued that changes to the residential code, especially the sprinkler rule, would effectively increase the cost of a typical new house $15,000, would have an effect "on the demand for their home-building and remodeling services, and will adversely affect the availability of financing of homes."

They're starting to celebrate Christmas in my area by torching churches:
On the busy week of Christmas, firefighters were called to fight flames inside St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton and now investigators say the fire was no accident.
The fire broke out around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon inside St. Peter's Cathedral. Investigators say it was small, but caused damage to the back of the church.
Firefighters arrived here at the cathedral within just minutes of the first call. One of the city's fire inspectors tells Eyewitness News the blaze is now being investigated as arson. Now diocesan leaders say the cathedral will have be closed through at least Tuesday for cleaning.

Once our kids reached Middle School and their "wishes" became expensive, the "list" was trimmed to one request each. Times have been tough a lot more frequently than I'd have imagined once upon a time. But because of lean times, our little family's Christmas traditions amount to coming home to be together, to eat well and thank God for all good things in life, our love for each other, our home, the good health we enjoy, and what good fortune with the employment we yet enjoy through my better half. We've been waiting to watch any of our favorite Christmas movies until tomorrow when we'll likely snuggle up for memory lane. I do love all the traditional Christmas Carol renditions up through George C. Scott's, and I love the classic BBgun little boy story. Meanwhile, I tune into KMFA to feel enveloped in Christmas love.

A package exploded Thursday at the Swiss Embassy in Rome, wounding one person, news reports said.
A person answering the phone at the embassy said she couldn't confirm the reports by the ANSA and Apcom news agencies.
The reports said the explosion occurred as soon as the package was opened by an embassy staffer who was subsequently injured and taken to the hospital.

Gas prices surpassed the milestone $3 mark Thursday for the first time since Oct. 17, 2008, as the national average compiled by motorist group AAA reached $3.013 a gallon.
Gas prices have risen more than 4% from $2.872 a month ago and are nearly 16% higher than the $2.585 average a year ago, according to the AAA figures.
Prices have been climbing steadily since bottoming out at $1.616 in December 2008. However, the average price is down $1.101 -- or 26.7% -- from the record high of $4.114 reported on July 17, 2008.
"We've
never had Christmas Day with gasoline at three dollars or higher," said
Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst with Oil Price Information Service, an
energy trade publication based in Wall, N.J.

Congress on Wednesday passed legislation that would effectively bar the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the U.S. for trial, rejecting pleas from Obama administration officials who called the move unwise.
A defense authorization bill passed by the House and Senate included the language on the offshore prison, which President Barack Obama tried unsuccessfully to close in his first year in office.
The measure for fiscal year 2011 blocks the Department of Defense from using any money to move Guantanamo prisoners to the U.S. for any reason. It also says the Pentagon can't spend money on any U.S. facility aimed at housing detainees moved from Guantanamo, in a slap at the administration's study of building such a facility in Illinois.

DECEMBER 22--A 13-year-old boy was arrested Friday for using a permanent marker while in class at his Oklahoma City middle school, a violation of an obscure city ordinance.
According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, the boy was spotted “in possession of a permanent marker” by Roosevelt Middle School teacher DeLynn Woodside. The 50-year-old educator told cop Miguel Campos that the student was “writing on a piece of paper, which caused it to bleed over onto the desk.”
Woodside, pictured at right, reported that the child, whose name was redacted by police from the report, attempted to hide the marker when she asked him for it. Strangely, Woodside’s Facebook page reveals that her “likes and interests” include the official “Sharpie Permanent Markers” page on Facebook.
Campos reported that he allowed Woodside, a seventh grade math teacher, to “sign a citation” against the boy, who was then transported to the Community Intervention Center, a juvenile holding facility. A police sergeant subsequently “booked the marker into the property room.”

A good friend of mine recently had their mother - a 92 year old WWII nurse - savagely beaten, carjacked and left for dead in the mud and rain of her front yard in Florida. I met Eunice a few years ago and could not believe she was anywhere NEAR 90. She still drove, had ALL her faculties, and was fun and well-liked. I've seriously never seen a person that old without EVEN A HINT of memory loss or dementia. Instead of this piece of crap just taking her car (how hard could that be from a 92 year old woman) the 27 year old literally pummeled her - distorting her face, breaking ribs, and putting her in a coma. Please get this story out, morons. The family are good Christians who would never ask for anything. But maybe some exposure might see some help go their way.

Here's a small thing, a real feel-good we personally experienced--through Soldier's Angels, we've adopted a total of 15 troops. We recently discovered that one of them (and family) lives just a few miles from us. So we adopted the wife and 2 adorable kids too. I'd adopt ALL of them, were it possible.
In each of your lives, y'all can find something similar, doesn't have to be huge, simply LOOK for it. Make you proud, I guarantee.

Another buyer wants Boy Scouts HQ
A local philanthropist has waded into the controversy surrounding the city's proposed settlement deal with the regional Boy Scouts, making a $1.5 million offer to buy the Scouts' headquarters.
Real-estate investor Mel Heifetz is offering more than the city would get from the Scouts. Under the city's settlement deal - which follows a legal dispute based on the national organization's ban on gay Boy Scouts - the Scouts would pay $500,000 for the Logan Square building and then drop a claim for up to $960,000 in legal fees.
Heifetz, who sent the offer to Mayor Nutter and the public property commissioner yesterday, said that if he successfully bought the 13,000-square-foot building at 22nd and Winter streets, he would donate it to a charitable organization that does not discriminate.
"I thought maybe we can right a wrong. It would be very nice if the building were in the hands of some gay group," said Heifetz, who several years ago paid off the mortgage for the William Way Community Center, which serves the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.

It is perfectly understandable, that the funds from insurance to take care of First Responders is running out.
Why don't they just tell us that?

Mr Y-not has five glorious days off. Woot, woot!
As we were sitting drinking coffee and eating some of the goodies our landlords brought by last night (really nice gift basket with baked goods), we were remarking (not for the first time) how great it would be if this country would just come to its senses and declare the week between Christmas and New Year's a holiday. Productivity is so low during that time and our economy is in the tank anyway. If the Europeans can take off a week in August (or, hell, it's practically the whole month of August when I've had the misfortune to be in Europe during that time), why can't we take off Christmas/New Year's week?
I loved LauraW's Christmas traditions thread. 'Hope we have some more of those and less threads arguing 'til we're blue in the face with people who don't give a rat's ass about what accommodating promoting their personal hang-ups is going to do to this country.
Whoops! There I go slipping into a DADT argument!

So my 50-something pound collie has decided to try to become a lap dog.
We have these low couches she was allowed to sit on, but in this house they're up in the loft which is only reachable via a spiral staircase. Collie is not smart enough to figure out how to climb that staircase, so she's been frustrated as she's not allowed on the (leather) couch downstairs.
So now she's decided that she'll use the large, low ottomans in our living room. She crams herself onto the ottoman and rests her head on our knees.

And yeas, she always considered herself a lap dog. While on the computer, she would jump up on my lap and plop her head down on the keyboard. Sha always had to be in touch with either dad or mommy. Either on our lap, or put a paw on your knee. She was a good doggie.

Yeah. When mommy had her 5 retina surgeries in 4 months and housebound, doggie was right there guarding her to make sure she was OK.
