No kidding.  Here in my county there was a tax that expired, and of course no one in the county wanted to vote for renewal.  So what does the commission do?  Close all the satellite courthouses, and lay off half the county staff.  So it took literally hours to renew tags, transfer deeds, etc.

This crap pisses me off.  Any new money goes to administrators and contractors, but the lowest paid people (teachers, firefighters, police) are the first to feel the cuts.

Don't know about the Christmas lights but my mom had solar powered glowing butterflies she would put in the plants. They worked well and twinkled during the night.

You might just want to go to Bing.com or Google and type in "reviews" + "the exact product you're thinking of getting".

You'll usually find something that will help you decide one way or another.

I was replacing the old edison bulbs in my table lamp which burns most of the day about every month and a half. I have a CFL in it now that has been in it for over a year and still going strong.

What I have found is that the CFL bulbs works best in heavy use areas. No so good in areas that get turned on and off a lot.

Since we have also been discussing taxes a lot, he looked at me funny and then yelled at me: 'You PAID them to make my favorite light bulbs illegal!'

PS- does anyone else get headaches when they are in a home/store lit with CFLs?  My mother-in-law just recently changed to all CFLs in her house.  The last 3 times we where there I spent the time laying down with a pillow over my eyes.  I finally asked her if she put in air fresheners, etc.  She said, no, just changed her light bulbs. Oy.

There have been a lawsuits filed by both Washington State and SC to halt the shutdown. There was also one filed previously about a decade ago over the "lateness". That one was filed by several utilities. The utilities won a judgment.

There was not enough light to read by in any of the hotel rooms I stayed in in Germany in Sept...and the quality of light issue was demonstrated on my first night. We went to a pub (beer, pizza) in Freising; all the lights in the place were incandescent except one bulb in the corner. The booths under the old bulbs were warm, inviting, cheerful; the booth in the corner looked like a cold grey Stasi interrogation room.

really? you must have bad luck. I bought CFLs about 3 years ago. Only one has burned out. I've had great luck with them.

However, I do not use them exclusively. In the room where I read and my bathroom I use regular light bulbs.

80 Immediately after Hurricane Ike, we had to get several ceiling fans replaced (one per ceiling that we had to get replaced, actually) and last year I put ceiling fans in rooms that didn't have them, but needed them. Both times, we searched in vain for a fan whose fixture would accept light bulbs with normal sized bases. I figure that the reason that they didn't make fixtures with anything but smaller sockets was because the bans on incandescent bulbs exempted those with a smaller base. Now, it just so happens that my household prefers CFL bulbs (as Vic says, they work well for those areas where the light stays on for long periods of time, which describes most of the ceiling light fixtures in this household) which is why we were interested in normal-sized fixtures, and why we were glad to see CFL's come with a smaller-sized base. However, you may be interested to know that we also small small-based incandescent bulbs come with adapters for standard sized sockets. I expect that those adapters could be had separately, so there's no need to fear the loss of the regular incandescent light bulb. One could imagine a thriving dark grey market in the means to circumvent light bulb bans.

Both fluorescent and incandescent bulbs flicker at 60 Hz (60 times/second) because AC current changes polarity at 60 Hz. The flicker of incandescent is imperceptible, however, because the filament doesn't have time to cool off.

Whenever a monitor refresh rate is set to 60 Hz, even with incandescent bulbs in the room, its flickering drives me nuts. Any other setting, faster or slower, is okay. 60 Hz with fluorescent lights and I can only watch the monitor for a minute or two.

Um, Aren't we supposed to mail them to the homes of the nearest Congresscritter that voted for the light bulb efficiency bill?  I mean, they need to know how many people appreciate their support for these very safe light bulbs

Plus, even if I didn't get headaches/dizzy from the freaking things, I could never have them in the house.  I have two young kids that just love to swing brooms, bats, hammers, etc., in the house.

During the Olympics (true story, I NEVER exaggerate/lie about my kids because I never want to put negativity towards them out into the world) my kids opened to boxes of saltines, mashed them up on the living room carpet/couch, and then put a bean bag on the couch, stood on it and jumped into the pile of saltines below (on the floor).  I watched them set up/do the entire thing and finally I asked what the hell they were doing.  They told me they were trick-ski-jumping like they do in the Olympics.  I asked what the crackers were for, and after looking at me like I was a total idiot, they said, 'It's not crackers, mommy. It's Snow!'

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp. are battling a new federal law that could force them to report whether their store-brand goods contain minerals from war-torn Central Africa.

The requirement, part of the Dodd-Frank financial law passed in July, aims to pressure companies to spurn so called conflict minerals--tin, tantalum, tungsten or gold from parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo or neighboring countries.

Income from these minerals is blamed for fueling violence that has claimed millions of lives in eastern Congo...

Under the new law, public companies using any of the 4 minerals from Central Africa must report what steps they have taken to verify the minerals weren't taxed or controlled by rebel groups.  Products that don't contain minerals that benifitted such groups can bear the label "DRC conflict free."  Companies that fail to verify their sources can still sell their products, but could face embarassment.

A broad array of US companies, including makers of medical devices, cellphones, airplanes and machine tools will be affected by the requirement because the minerals are in the products they manufacture. 

Less clear is the status of retailers, such as Wal-Mart and Target, who carry private label goods.  The SEC has the power to decide who is considered a manufacturer under the law, and so must comply with it.

Industry groups say the measure could backfire by forcing companies to halt all use of minerals from Central Africa, even ones untouched by armed groups.

'This is the only form of economic activity and subsistence for hundreds of thousands of people,' said Rick Goss, VP of the Informationn Technology Industry Council which represents high-tech companies."

Incidentally, the provision was authored by Dick Durbin and Baghdad Jim McDermott (which made me wonder how a Representative gets to influence a Senate bill).
