Just in case Gabe's in an l-tryptophan induced coma, here's a new thread to comment on until Dave puts up a cheerleader*.

This choice little nugget from the Obamacare story I linked should get you started:

Moreover, the e-mail said: “We would ask that you not broadcast this accomplishment out to any of your lists, even if they are ‘supporters’ — e-mails can too easily be forwarded.”

The e-mail continued: “Thus far, it seems that no press or blogs have discovered it, but we will be keeping a close watch and may be calling on you if we need a rapid, targeted response. The longer this goes unnoticed, the better our chances of keeping it.”

In the interview, Mr. Blumenauer said, “Lies can go viral if people use them for political purposes.”

Sounds like he's describing a feature, not a bug.

1 But...Jake Tapper said Sarah Palin's claim about death panels was thoroughly debunked!  And he used to write for Salon!

It's a picture book.

Well, more of a magazine, really...

5 Unfortunately, Government by fiat will continue for another two years.  Hopefully, this blatant display of power-grabbing will sicken enough people that they'll support a significant reduction of the government in 2012, and keep reps feet to the fire until then.

10 “This regulation could be modified or reversed, especially if Republican leaders try to use this small provision to perpetuate the ‘death panel’ myth.”

or rather describe exactly what we are doing.

11 Advance Directives are a routine conversation for hospitalized patients. It really has nothing to do with death panels. As the woman said, it needs to be known for the patient's care if that patient becomes incapable of voicing their decisions about end of life care or quality of life situations. There IS A DEATH PANEL that is not discussed openly however. Under OCare a board of bureaucrats is already being assembled to determine what treatments are cost effective and prolong life==something doctors decide now.

Posted by: er at December 26, 2010 06:51 AM (nWuNy)

12 There are death panels galore in the Obamacare bill, in the stimulus bill, under the FCCCER, probably in the Fin Reg bill, they all work together like the puzzlebox from Hellraiser.

13 Medicare is sucking the money out of the economy and conservatives are on the "government isn't paying for grandma's drug therapy" bandwagon. We better start talking about end of life medication/treatment cause the way we are doing it now is breaking us. Posted by: lowandslow at December 26, 2010 10:56 AM (GZitp) Ok, end Medicare and all Government intrusion into healthcare.

Posted by: Potassium at December 26, 2010 07:40 AM (XXyJt)

14 These people are insane. Govt control of healthcare is being perpetuated by the way Medicare is run and insurance companies are following the cost guidelines of Medicare, though, for now, some might tack on to those numbers a few percentage points. Hey! Let's fix these problems by giving govt. complete control. Makes perfect sense.

15 I attended a family dinner yesterday where most people were totally oblivious to what was happening in the political world! One of the asshats there actually made the comment that "we shouldn't disrespect the president"!! WTF? I'm sure, after my tirade, I won't be invited back. Meh. We wonder why we're totally fucked?

Posted by: thatcrazyjerseyguy at December 26, 2010 07:48 AM (xp9ed)

16 12 You know as conservatives we got to get off this end of life planning/death panel shit. Just because the popular conservative of the day says something in opposition to universal healthcare doesn't make it a good idea or even right<<<

Right.  Because that's the only reason conservatives would balk at the government helping people snuff themselves, because Teh Sarah said so.  If she had never existed I would still find the idea repugnant, for religious and moral reasons.  Jackass.

Death Panels by regulatory fiat.

19 In case anyone thought Charles Krauthammer was loopy, despite his obvious and usual good judgment, when he said that Barry is now the Comeback Kid, do a search on "michael barone 'Even after shellacking, 2012 looks OK for Obama.'" Barone is almost on board with Krauthammer. In the Washington Examiner is his latest column, and no one can dismiss Barone as a wild-eyed doomsayer. He thinks Barry has a very good chance of recovering completely, but he won't go so far as to say he's out of the woods. For example::"Several factors will likely work less strongly against Obama in 2012 than against the Obama Democrats in 2010. Turnout will be different, for one thing. We may see again the record turnout of blacks we saw in 2008. Young people who pretty much shunned the polls in the midterms may turn out and vote -- though the 34-point margin they gave to Obama was halved to 17 points for congressional Democrats in 2010." Also: "His reliance on his teleprompter, his secret smoking, his irritability when not adored -- these are pretty minor failings. People like his family and his obvious devotion to them. They don't mind that he likes to get away and play golf or shoot hoops from time to time." We love to impale Barry on these personal failings but most people could care less, especially when the MFM largely ignores them and will continue to do so. With no one seriously leading the pack on the GOP horizon, a second term of Lord Earflaps McUnicorn seems likely. Enjoy!

It strikes me that not only do we have government by fiat, we also have FIAT by government.

At this rate, it can't be long until the government collapses into a black hole.

25 Plus we as a society really went off the deep end when it comes to dying, as if confined to bed/wheelchair for last years of our lives without the ability to do anything, with the government paying for it, is somehow living.

That's how it started in Europe.  Slippery slope, useless eaters etc.

Yep, been saying this for awhile.

People who voted for him (who wouldn't normally vote that way) are dying to give him a pass.  Despite the occasional negative story about him, the MFM is still behind him 100%.  Anyone who thinks he's even close to being dead in the water is fooling themselves.

32 People are not only too dumb to govern themselves, they're too dumb to realize that if they're too dumb to govern themselves, they're also too dumb to govern each other.

Which is kind of like saying "we're boned" only with more words.

37 lowandslow,  You apparently are laboring under the belief that 1, you will never get old and 2, people in wheelchairs or bed-ridden lead useless lives.

Here is my question:  who are you to decide?  There are lots of people with varying disabilities and chronic illnesses,  some of whom are very young.

And Dick Cheney,  even with his failing heart,  is a pretty useful guy.  You want to just give him a pain pill and tell him to go wait for death?

I do not like turning these decisions over to the government,  because once they acquire the power to make these decisions,  they will keep expanding their area of control.   It is not a good idea.
