Re sidebar story: GM's "plan" to save Opel - sweeping job cuts and 2.7B euros in bailout money from European governments. Don't take the bait folks. We've been there and done that.

The parallels between our own GM and Opel are simply amazing. Opel wants to restructure (bankruptcy) and they want a bailout from the German government (federal and local).  They also want the unions to agree to a pay cut.  Of course the unions are refusing.

What is really amazing here is the actual stupidity and “tone deafness” of GM executives who think they will be able to ram this through at this time.  3 or 4 of the European countries themselves are about to go bankrupt (default on debt) and THEY are expecting a bailout from Germany themselves.

Also, what they are missing is that this is one of those rare times in history when the German government is more capitalistic than the U.S. government.

Hey GM I have an message for you; shit in one hand and ask for a bailout from ermany in the other.  See which one fills up the fastest.

Re sidebar story: Cook Report: There Are 60 Competitive House Races. 50 Seats Are Currently Held by Democrats. Only 10 Are Held by Republicans.

There are 255 Democrats in the House.  Based on what has been going down this year in elections I would say there are 255 competitive races. That is assuming the Rs donÂ’t get too involved with shit like Pork-II that I posted earlier.

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama said he doesnÂ’t “begrudge” the $17 million bonus awarded to JP Morgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon or the $9 million issued to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. CEO Lloyd Blankfein, noting that some athletes take home more pay.

The president, speaking in an interview, said in response to a question that while $17 million is “an extraordinary amount of money” for Main Street, “there are some baseball players who are making more than that and don’t get to the World Series either, so I’m shocked by that as well.”

“I know both those guys; they are very savvy businessmen,” Obama said in the interview yesterday in the Oval Office with Bloomberg BusinessWeek, which will appear on newsstands Friday. “I, like most of the American people, don’t begrudge people success or wealth. That is part of the free- market system.”

So big evil Wall Street is raping Main Street with its big evil bonuses except when it's Barry's buddies then it's A-OK and they deserve the money.

When President George W. Bush nominated Henry Paulson to serve as Treasury Secretary, Republicans raised a red flag that Paulson, who, along with his wife, has strong ties to the Democrat party, would not be an honest broker with Republicans.

That seems to have been borne out, with sources inside of Treasury reporting that Paulson briefed Sen. Barack Obama and his campaign advisers on the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailout plan before offering such a briefing to the McCain campaign...

When Sen. Barack Obama was given the floor to speak during White House negotiations, according to White House aides, he did so raising concerns about a House Republican alternative to the Paulson/Bernanke $700 billion bailout. But those concerns weren't necessarily his, as he was not aware of the GOP plan before reviewing notes provided him by Paulson loyalists in Treasury prior to entering the meeting.

According to an Obama campaign source, the notes were passed to Obama via senior aides traveling with him, who had been emailed the document via a current Goldman Sachs employee and Wall Street fundraiser for the Obama campaign. "It was made clear that the memo was from 'friends' and was reliable," says the campaign source.

The memo allowed Obama and his fellow Democrats to box in Republican attendees and essentially took what President Bush had billed as a negotiating meeting off the rails

He repeated his belief that the government was going to "buy low and sell high," and he still didn't understand why we hadn't put that into the speech like he'd asked us to. When it was explained to him that his concept of the bailout proposal wasn't correct, the president was momentarily speechless. He threw up his hands in frustration.

"Why did I sign on to this proposal if I don't understand what it does?" he asked."

Forsyth: Indeed, Latimer reports White House gossip that at one meeting, an exasperated Bush told Paulson, "You've got to tell me what you're doing."

53 HAITI, The American Red Cross, and the US State Dept.

"The only portion of the Haitian government that is functioning is the court that has confined and charged American Christian Volunteers as criminals. Meanwhile, the thousands of murderers, rapists and thieves who escaped from the demolished Haitian prison are not being pursued by that government."

There's no question where to find the Evangelical Americans in Haiti's prison. It isn't as if they got lost and no one knows where they are.

The American Red Cross, with all the promotional contributions directed towards Haiti, has failed to visit the Americans in prison under the Napoleonic Code that presumes GUILT until proven innocent.

No surprise that Hillary Clinton's Obama State Department holds Christian's in absolute disdain. None the less, SHAME on our government for not doing one thing to help the Americans in Haiti's prison. But not one call, let alone visit, has been made on behalf of the American Christian Volunteers in prison.

Obama re-introduced George W. back to the American public by enlisting his participation leading aid to Haiti. Along with Obama and Bill Clinton, George W. Bush has not made contact with the American Evangelicals in Haiti's prison. So much for "No Child Left Behind" and the Evangelical voting block that made W's career for him. He's not running for office anymore. If it wasn't obvious before, Bush sold Americans down the river a long time ago.

Yada, yada. The evangelicals should not have been so enthusiastic in their willingness to help indigent parents transport their children to the Dominican Republic. But not everyone in the truck was part of the orphan project. An American construction specialist was asked to participate in the rebuilding efforts, and he's in prison with the so-called baby thieves as well. And no American family members have been able to contact those in Haiti's prison. And neither the State Dept. nor the Red Cross will help make contact.

Tie up this mess with Pat Robertson's remembrance. Rather than damning Haiti, though, note well the earthquake last night that shook Chicago that rests on our country's largest geological faultline. That New Madrid Fault predictions determine 90% probability to have an earthquake measuring a Richter 6 shock before 2040.

"OUR GREATEST CONCERNS ARE THE 6.0-7.6 SIZED EVENTS, which do have significant probabilities in the near future. A 6.0 shock has a 90% chance by the year 2040. Damaging earthquakes of this magnitude are a virtual certainly within the lifetimes of our children."--St.Charles County Division of Emergency Management/ scchealth.org

a) BMI is bullshit. It's just the height-weight table from Army volunteers in the 1940s.  There is nothing in that that measures health.
b) People the BMI call "overweight" live longer than people the BMI calls "normal."

I got one.  When we extract the oil and natural gas from the Earth, the plates are no longer lubricated.  Also, the additional weight of the extra CO2 in the air then pushes down on the ground causing more friction in the ground.  This causes an increase of earthquake size and magnitude.

Traders always say the one thing they contribute to the market is "liquidity".  Well, they really aren't trading at the rates they were trading since Uncle Sam is now a cock sucking investor playing at the same table with powers to depreciate the value of every other players' chips.

We need a Congress that says "Hell No" to Obama's regulatory machinations.  We need a Congress that writes a regulatory structure that won't kill the US economy.

After being shanghai'd into helping with the production  of "Quilters" in college I knew well enough to run for the hills when I was asked to help with helping with/promo of VM here at the local university, and to above all else graciously decline an invitation to go see it("Quilters" was sort of a folksy precursor to the VM, ran about the same time the installation piece "The Dinner Party" by Judy Chicago was all the rage to talk about at some of the colleges and worked off some of the same ideas -- actually, it wasn't too bad in spots and made a bit more sense than women talking about/to their girly parts).

At the very least you could give Quilters and The Dinner Party credit for some sort of creativity (although it was primarily feminist hogwash, at the very least it wasn't horridly blatant in the "slam the mens" department and provided a more comprehensive view of women, and at least it was a teeny tiny bit original).  The VM however can not be given the same pass.

That being said, the Rs rarely do this. This incident was the reflectin of a real union idealog who would not be an impartiual labor middleman for the government.

I would propose that once the R's fillibuster as many of his appointments that the Dems did, then they can quit and go back to the regular vote. (As long as the Dems agree they will not filibuster R appointments in the future.)

151 From the Seattle Times, very disturbing video of a 15 year old girl being beaten (kicked in the head to the point of unconsciousness) at a bus tunnel by several other people right in front of unarmed transit security (who did very little to stop it).  Why is the City of Seattle even paying these people?  What is their functin if they are doing absolutely nothing to promote public transportation safety.   Here's the link:

Toby 148 Is it right to filibuster a presidential appointee, as in the case of Craig Becker, short of a showing of criminality or turpitude? I believe in the Unitary Executive.  It seems to me that whoever is appointed does the will of the president.

I believe in whatever system best follows predefined rules. If the Executive has no loyalty to those rules - in our case, Obama to the Constitution - then every other branch in the government has the duty to trammel the Executive to the fullest legal extent.

"Unitary Executive" means tyranny, a ruler with no rules.

For the first time, in my adult life, I am ashamed of my fellow yellow.  Yeesh!  It seems to me that the Asians who suffered the worst indignities and discrimination, (ie. my parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts who were interned during WWII) bear no ill will towards our government.  There was a saying that they said at the time, can't remember what it was in Japanese, but in English, it was "It can't be helped."  People suffered true loss and were fricking imprisoned, but they came of camp, stronger, determined to succeed.  This current generation of spoiled, economically advantaged, entitled brats have stooped to grievance mongering and playing the "victim" card.  It truly is shameful.

93 How come it seems like the White House thinks everything is a threat to our national security (this time obesity?) Posted by: ParanoidGirlInSeattle at February 10, 2010 10:30 AM (RZ8pf)

Sweetness & Light has the skinny on that. It has to do with the SEIU:

It is a pet issue of the SEIU, the people who put her and her husband in the White House. And, of course, it is all part and parcel of the SEIU’s push for more money for their thug members through ‘healthcare reform.’

Any surprises there?   Funny, but if SEIU is promoting this stupid child obesity campaign, that would be an huge irony.  The majority of nurses at my hospital that are SEIU members are big fatties themselves.  Maybe they want to save children from turning out like them.

156 "Unitary Executive" means tyranny, a ruler with no rules.

Actually, it doesn't.  It means that all executive officers derive their authority from the President.  They have no independent authority.  They are merely his hands, and have no power, on their own, that the President does not have under the Constitution.

So, if executive officers merely implement the policy of the President, why does it matter who they are?

Well, the mofo Democrats controlling my state voted yesterday to over-rule a voter approved initiative (I-960) that had survived 4 earlier lawsuits.  The initiative required our state legislators to have a 2/3 majority before they could increase our taxes.  It also imposed rules of disclosure/transparency before any spending could be implemented.  It has saved us billions of dollars in taxes for the last several years.  In what was an absolute spectacle of Democrat Kabuki theatre (replete with the requisite props of "Grandma" and children as well as tearful idiocy invoking "how can I face my Lord if I don't take care of the least of these"?)  The Republicans stood firm and were very bold in their statements against, but alas, just like the other Washington, WA state is completely controlled by the Dems.  Here's a link to an article.  I only wish I could find the video that played on the news last night.  It was shamelessly unbelievable (like the Dems knew that they were on some soap opera on tv, complete with poor acting and over-emoting).

toby: it matters because of the reasons we see before us.

A President serves for four years and Senators for six. Also the Senators typically have a greater relationship to their own constituents than does the President. And then there's the culture of the Senate as the higher deliberative body. All this means the Senate is both risk-averse AND lags behind the President.

Suppose the electorate screws up and hires an Obama. Historically the only time impeachment was a credible threat has been the case of Nixon. Johnson & Clinton got further along the process, but they both gambled that the votes wouldn't be there and they both won. So impeachment hardly ever works in practice. The votes are simply not there.

That leaves Plan B, and Plan B is to weaken the rogue President until he is out the door.

Meh, I think that the idea of acting unconstitutionally to save the Constitution should rarely be invoked.  Lincoln had a decent argument for it when dealing with an insurrectionist succession but that's the only argument for it that I can agree with.

162 Besides which, the next guy Obama nominates will be just as biased in favor of Organized Labor as this guy was.  I hate the idea of filibustering simply because we think that this appointee will be effective at implementing the President's policies.
