Now class. What does engagement and 'smart diplomacy' mean to you?
No, no, no, no, no! You're hear to learn, not to teach.
Engagement and smart diplomacy means that this administration's inability to put substantial pressure on Iran will probably mean that Israel will eventually be forced to take some action and because they have limited options, that action will be unconventional. A whole bunch of innocent Persians will die and Israel will be significantly damaged. Obama will be able to blame someone else and America will take another step toward oblivion.
Don't mind me. This stuff just comes up every once in a while...

Feature, not bug and all that.
Think about it. Israel is over the proverbial barrel here. Self preservation will require them to act. And by act, I mean unilaterally and preemptively. In all likelihood, they will be successful. It kills two birds with one stone. First, it removes the problem of a nuclear Iran and secondly, the administration can hop on the U.N. bandwagon condemning Israel.

Good news!
Our city is now going to be tracking (literally) how much residents are recycling.
I'm all for giving people a bigger cart. That's just smart. But the tracking??
I remember Obama's quote as "we can't drive our SUVs, eat as much as we want, and keep our homes on 72 degrees.".
Our city apparently took that one step further with trash recycling.
Nanny, nanny, boo boo!

By all accounts, these Toyotas are a mess, so I'm not suggesting anything untoward is going on in this particular case. But, the combination of the bully pulpit of the US Government and the power to demand that your competitor recall their products is a deadly powerful mix. How often does that much power go unabused?

Dinnerjacket said he would announce something big. But I don't think it will be nuclear weapons related.
But I'm just guessing. I honestly believe though, that Barry wants Israel to deal with Iran so 1) he can avoid being blamed and, 2) so Israel will be seen as even more the villian by the world and Barry can put more pressure on her to cede land to the Arabs.
Having Israel deal with Iran is the best possible outcome for everyone except Iran and Israel, imo. Isreal doesn't really have the capacity to cause substantial damage to Iran's nuke program without going unconventional and if she does that, she's signed her death warrant. But that's just me rambling.

Headline and story from the AP over on Fox:
House Faces Tough Vote on $1.9T More Debt
To ease its passage, Democrats attached tougher budget rules designed to curb a spiraling upward annual deficit -- projected by Obama to hit a record $1.56 trillion for the budget year ending Sept. 30. The new rules would require future spending increases or tax cuts to be paid for with either cuts to other programs or equivalent tax increases.
I guess AP expects us to really believe this bullshit. First we have to beleive that it will be a "tough" vote because those mythalogical blue dogs will oppose it and second they expect us to belive that there will be some new "rules" to limit their spending on pork and communism.
Pull the other one AP, we all aren't stupid turds that fell off the turnip truck yesterday.

Speaking of England (#30), I was recollecting to when I was stationed in England (late 90s), in the wake of the Mad Cow scare. My landlady said that she believed that just about everyone in the UK had been exposed to Mad Cow beef as beef (and bacon) are staples of the diet.
10 years later, seeing what the UK has turned into, I have to believe she's right. Their brains are more prions than grey matter.

I dunno. Carl in Jerusalem thinks that it'll be an annoucement that Iran can enrich uranium up to 20%. I'm inclined to agree, unless it's all just more hot-air from Adinnerjacket (which is very possible).
That would negate Iran's "need" to send low enriched uranium overseas and would have bought even more time for Iran's inevitable conflict with Israeli (and the US).
In the end, there will be only chaos.

(AP) - The number of newly laid-off workers filing initial claims for jobless benefits rose unexpectedly last week, evidence that layoffs are continuing and jobs remain scarce.
The rise is the fourth in the past five weeks. Most economists hoped that claims would resume a downward trend that was evident in the fall and early winter.
The Labor Department said Thursday that new claims for unemployment insurance rose by 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 480,000.
Wall Street economists had expected a drop to 460,000, according to thomas reuters.

I'm not into eschatology but if Israel gets wiped out I think it's the end.
Well certainly, it would be for Israel. And for a lot of other countries in the Mid-East. Radiation, famine, disease, you name it.
I agree with Hussein. The U.S. backing off and just letting it all happen is terrible. Israel backed into a corner is a very, very bad move, one that we could help alleviate. However, Iran is gaming us. And winning.
This is all just so stupid.

The four-week average, which smooths fluctuations, rose for the third straight week to 468,750.
The figure is the highest in the past two months
The number of people continuing to claim benefits was unchanged at 4.6 million. That data lags initial claims by a week.
But the so-called continuing claims do not include millions of people who have used up the regular 26 weeks of benefits typically provided by states,
and are receiving extended benefits for up to 73 additional weeks, paid for by the federal government

Last time I was in DC I marveled at how treacherous crossing the street there actually is. I mean those drivers pay no attention to stop lights and even less attention to stop signs. And they drive way too fast for city driving. Forget jay walking there, it's like asking to be hit. And with all those stupid circles all over the city people do risky things, instead of just going around the circle again and paying attention, they cross over three lanes in the face of traffic, so really, having to make maneuvers like that, who pays attention to the walkers?
This poor guy. Is he a conservative blogger. Where is the story please?

Carl is insightful and has a lot of contacts in the region so he's probably right. I think the whole idea of exporting the processing of HeUN into fuel is a bad one anyway. Just means it would be easier for the uranium to "accidentally" get lost and wind up in the wrong hands so no-one would be at fault if a dirty weapon or a crude nuke accidentally exploded in NY or Tel Aviv.

From Fox News:
In response to a Republican lawmaker who requested a probe into dismissed complaints against the New Black Panther Party, the Justice Department's Inspector General reportedly said he has been unable to investigate because he lacks the authority.
Justice Department Inspector General Glenn A. Fine wrote in a four-page letter to Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia that Congress stripped him of the power to investigate all alleged wrongdoings within his department, the Washington Times reported Thursday.
OK, so the inspector general has no power to inspect anything. and we wonder why Washington is so screwed up.

I was involved in a hit & run in law school. I had the right of way and some car just continued to make right-hand turn; not even paying attention. It was in a lovely part of town. No one stopped and people drove over my books that were scattered in the road. To this day I'm convinced the driver had a warrant out for her arrest. I read her lips saying "fuuuuuck". It was like Ralphie in A Christmas Story!
Luckily it wasn't too bad as she was actually going slow (until she hit me and THEN she gunned it). Just some back problems that lessened over time with the help of a good chiropractor.
Just never ceased to amaze me how much some people can be that inconsiderate.

We are hearing that phrase a lot "lack the authority" and I don't recall ever hearing that in any other administration. Did people get away with things they weren't supposed to in other administrations, did they just not check? Or does err ick just this department check your credentials and authority and let you know what you can't do? This is so confusing.

M'chelle was on TV this morning, according to my mother, and sleeveless yet again. I know M'chelle has been told that her best feature is her arms but could we have a break, esp in record cold DC?
Mom, 88, an army wife and rural survivor of the actual great depression, is highly offended by the first lady not wearing sleeves. She is even more offended by her not wearing sleeves in the winter and then lecturing us about energy conservation. At least Jimmy Carter had the decency to put on a malaise cardigan.

The convoys are always proceeded by motorcycle cops. If it's Obama or Biden the ramps and the intersections are closed 10 min before hand. All traffic is stopped. Motorcycle cops go first then several black suvs then the bullet proof limo, then more suvs, then more cops. After a few minutes the intersections and ramps are reopened.
It's not hard to figure out. If you yell at the cop, "Hey, what's going on?" You get a wave or a "get back in your car ma'am."
Happens all the time.
Bush used to stay home to avoid this big f-ing production.

Since there is no "legal" way to recall these duochebags when they flaunt their RINOness at us we need to be pressuring the Party to remove him from committee positoons and removing support from him.

Who could have guessed he even had three knees to break?

#131 Tell me about it. I have no idea why they would need to do that as the implant they had inserted can track my every move.
They fly those B-52s near your house to try to trick you into thinking that you don't have an implant. You'll think "why would they fly tracking planes around me if I have an implant?" and then lower your guard. Good to see that you aren't fooled.

My understanding is every household has a weapon, so they should be OK.
I still want to force Hollywooders with BDS to adopt them into their homes. Enjoy a multicultural experience, kids.

Any news on the MN 5th Cong. District? Especially what has been Muslim Keith Ellison's voting record and what are the chances of dislodging him?
Cook's Political Report has it solid D. District has a PVI of +21 D (meaning their are 21% more Dems than Republicans) so that is gonna take one hell of a wave to put it in play
How does that compare to Mass. before Brown? 21% means there are some signs of life there. As a member of the MN diaspora I embarassed about him and Franken.

Tell me about it.

I'm looking at our weather updates (big storm coming). The weather prediction is very helpful. Here's the blurb:
A winter storm watch has been issued for Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Friday morning through Saturday afternoon with anywhere from 2-6 inches of snow expected.
Any questions?

Hell, two inches can shut this city down. I *can't wait* to see what the store looks like tonight when I get home from work.

When I worked in DC our carpool had an agreement -- when the first snowflake came down we bailed out, because the drivers went berserk (more than usual) in the snow. One time when I got home to McLean wifey was going nuts watching TV because a plane had hit the bridge about ten minutes after I crossed it.

Two things today have me convinced that society is truly about to collapse: 1) the administration tries to whack Treacher (just because it's a dark gm suv doesnt mean secret svc, could be anyone like say DHS); and 2) the three "trolls" who took over an abandoned building and started demanding tolls, sounds crazy but they thought they could mug people and get away with it (and who says they didn't the first few times?).
Kratos, God bless'em, was right.

A 4 inch range isn't that unusual. We often get predictions of 6-12 inches and stuff like that.

Hahahaha; turned on the WC to check this snow stuff.
They are talking about this cold weather we have and is it killing the AGW theory?
hashahahah; they are saying the cold spell only applied to the U.S. (an obvious lie) and they pumped back with that discredited myth about x out of the last 10 years being the coldest.
This is the kind of BS we are fighting. They sput outrageous fkn lies, ignore all the evidnceof fraud, and simply deny every time one of their own NOAA people retracts the x out of 10 myth.
Note I say x out of 10 because they change the number every few months.
