WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama hasn't kicked the smoking habit, takes anti-inflammatory medication to relieve chronic tendinitis in his left knee and should eat better to lower his cholesterol, his team of doctors concluded Sunday after the 48-year-old's first medical checkup as commander in chief.
The hoops-happy chief executive, who has endured an exhausting White House run and yearlong battles with congressional Republicans, was otherwise declared in excellent health and fit for duty.

Posted by: Mama AJ at March 01, 2010 06:22 AM (Be4xl)
It was a smoke round, used for screening. harder for the enemy to shoot what they can't see, don't you know. Also useful for marking own position when calling in air support.
Posted by: Hatchet Five at March 01, 2010 06:23 AM (yfa38)
Well the numbers are in for February weather here. The average high was 52.2 and the average low was 30.8. The average median temp was 41.5.
That is compared with 54.1/36.5/45.3 from last year. Compare that to the NWS average for Feb 15th of 63/41/52.
Yes, Al Bore is whining big time about his scam going to hell, The Weather Channel and the rest of the libtard idiots are talking about cold weather vs "climate" When an entire month is way colder than the past year, and the past year was way colder than normal it ain't weather no more.
Its the climate people. If this keeps up I will have to get rid of my heat pump and go to an oil fired furnace. Heat pumps do not work well below 32°F which is why you don't see them up North.

What makes a heat pump different? The HVAC unit out back says "heat pump" on it and that is all I know.
A heat pump is basically an A/C unit with piping and solenoids that allow it to reverse cycle. In the heating mode it attempts to cool the outdoors and reject heat from outdoors into the house.
Normally this is the most economic method of heating a house. The problem is that when the outdoor temp gets below 32°F it has a tough time "cooling" any further, not to mention the coils start freezing up which requires it to reverse cycle to thaw them.
When it gets below 32 the internal strip heaters cut on and they suck electricity like no tommorrow. When the average low temp goes below 32 it means your strip heaters are running at night all the time.
I have been using just below 600KW per week for the past month and that is damn high for a 1600 sq ft house.

Conservative Democrat Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), whose obstinacy during the health care reform process was so frustrating to the progressive community, is officially getting a primary challenge.

The heat pump tends to be rather noisy and we bought a very modern unit a few years ago.
This unit is amazingly loud. I have no idea how old it is. Given that the last owners didn't take care of anything, I really need to get it serviced and see what state it's in.
Our electric bill was $90 or so the first couple months and the last bill was $190, but compared to our old house, it's great! There we paid $200-$400 a month.

A study in media bias see the following headline and lead paragraph for an AP article about Bunning and the unemployment extension. Fox rewrote the AP news article for its own purposes.
Fox:
Administration Blames Bunning's 'Political Games' for Furlough of 2,000 Workers
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood blasted Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning Monday for blocking legislation to extend several federal programs, a move that triggered the furlough of 2,000 transportation workers Monday
Original from AP (via MSNBC)
Senate impasse puts federal employees out of work.
WASHINGTON - Two thousand federal transportation workers are being furloughed without pay on Monday, and the Obama administration said they have a Kentucky senator to blame for it.
So it goes from mearly biased liberal to outright Dem PR. And what is the truth?
Bunning wants them to adhere to the just passed Dem PR bill called paygo in which they claimed they would start balancing the budget by forcing all bills to be paid for. Basically what that means is they want a tax increase for every new bill but they figure that would have about as much chance now as the healthscam crap so they will not even try.
Of course, if they floated a bill to cut some welfare bloat the RÂ’s would flock to voite FOR it. (except for Mclame and Lindsey that is).

When the strip heaters first cut on if they are covered with dust that dust will burn away and make smoke but it should clear up after a few minutes. This is normal at the begging of the cold season. If it doesn't clear up after a few minutes something is bad wrong and you need to get it checked soon.

It's fairy effective where we live, in CT, which gets really cold, but the bills are expensive, since it's electric. Oddly enough, though, when we use it as an air conditioner in summer, the bills are less

No, Vic, sorry I just haven't had enough coffee to be coherent.
The previous owners smoked and were morally opposed to cleaning, it seems.
The windows have gone bad so the house gets dusty much more quickly than out last couple houses.
Given the smoking and non-cleaning, I'm picturing dust and tar covered duct work.
It bothered my eyes a lot the first week or two the heater was on. By the time I figured out what was bothering my eyes, it wasn't as bad. Not great, but not as bad.

Chile's defense minister said Sunday that the navy made a mistake by not immediately issuing a tsunami warning after a mammoth earthquake, a step that could have helped coastal villagers flee to higher ground sooner.
Francisco Vidal said, however, that an alarm was later sounded by port captains. He said that saved hundreds if not thousands of lives.

So my local news (LA) sucks, I guess.

Yeah, and, what in the HELL is wrong with the British?
Sorry, I don't have all day to explain that.

Between this and his inability to quit smoking makes me wonder if we have a President with a propensity towards substance abuse. What's next, Xanax? Meth? Crack cocaine?

Okay, I didn't see anything about that on Fox's site, but they have more on video than articles so it was probably on one of the videos!
It's still going to take a while to get help there, isn't it?

Absolutely.
I wonder why the Chileans delayed at all. I was just confused because I thought our news was reporting that they'd asked for help already... but I guess it wasn't through official channels or whatever.
It's a shame that they are having problems with looting already.

Don't forget his two major addictions: to the sound of his own voice and the sight of his own reflection.
Seriously, though, he does seem to have an addictive personality.
I sure feel safe with him in charge. /sarc

If Ras has this douchebag up 9 points, the only conclusion I draw is that the kabuki summit helped him.
Maybe it's because of the Olympics. Heck, if he can cure the world, he can make us win medals.

But would an army of helpful sorts, clogging up the ports be of any practical use in getting food and water to those who might be cut off right now?

This site gives the relative costs for heating using different mechanisms. Since it is a site dedicated to selling natural gas it is biased toward that factor.
You can see the difference between electric baseboard heat/electric furnace (at 7.16 cents/kw) which is what your heat pump becomes when it is below 32°F outside and a high efficiency heat pump (which is what I have also 7.2/kw).
They assume a relatively low cost for NG and propane (2.47/gal propane). I have gas logs attached to a 90 lb propane tank that I had been using when it got real cold outside. The local gas company went up to over $4.00/gal for propane so I quit using it except when I lost power. I don't know what NG costs here because it is not available at all. Note that #2 fuel oil is actually a lot higher than a heat pump or even an electric furnace. Fuel oil is what most people in the NE use.
Notice that if you hook your heat pump to a deepwell the costs go down markedly. That is because the temp it is using for a heat sink stays at 65°F.
In the South most people use heat pumps because they can perform both heating and cooling with the same system and "normally" the temperatures remain above 32°F in the Winter so it stays economical. My normal weekly usage in the Winter is around 300KW. In the spring and fall with the heat pump off I use about 200KW/wk just for other household loads (mostly hot water heater and clothes dryer).
It just needs to get back to the "normal" temps here. I could use some of that damn globull warming crap.

I actually saw someone spinning (I think at Althouse) that "moderation of alcohol intake" might mean that the doctors told him to increase his drinking. Bwahaha!
This is from the American Diabetes Association web site:
The greatest benefit of alcohol appears to fall within study quintiles that include people drinking 15–30 g/day of alcohol, which can be considered “light to moderate drinking.” One drink of alcohol is commonly defined as 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine, or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (hard liquor), each the equivalent of about 15 g of alcohol.
Studies suggest a “J” or “U” shaped curve: a small
amount of alcohol per day is better than either no alcohol or a large amount
of alcohol. The type of alcoholic drink doesn't seem to matter. Studies also
report an increase in insulin sensitivity from moderate amounts of alcohol.
Finally, studies indicate that light to moderate amounts of alcohol do not
raise blood pressure, whereas chronic excessive amounts (greater than
30–60 g/day) do.
The ADA currently recommends no more than 2 servings of alcohol per day for healthy men.
I'm guessing Obama is exceeding that, if his doctors noted that he should moderate his alcohol intake. He's in a high risk group for metabolic diseases.

I think you're onto something there. There were several earnest hipsters at a pub in my neighborhood hoping the US hockey team would beat Canada yesterday. No small part of that was desperation for just some win, any win, even a case of Yuengling for President Greek Columns.

#91, Yuengling is really good beer from Pennsylvania. Right up there with Sam Adams for me in terms of drinkability.
Regarding the Rapture Pets organization in the headlines sidebar, the last time they were mentioned online I contacted them to see if I could get in on the action and maybe pocket a dollar or two. I'm pretty much an atheist, and even if I was accidentally in a state of grace at the time, the theological grounds for the pre-Tribulation rapture of the Church are really really thin, as in "probably not going to happen". I was told I'd be added to the waiting list as they try to organize their growth.

Damon, who still thinks Obama deserves time, vouches that "the people who worked on 'Green Zone' come from all across the political spectrum."
Yes, the whole political spectrum from the far left to the radical left. Damon is a complete cretin.

My theory on the "Fort Jackson Five" is that five disgruntled recruits, when they discovered saying "I quit" didn't work, decided to act up until they DID get thrown out. And they want to make 100 percent sure of that before they announce it, and they don't want to queer the program by making a big deal of the fact that some of the recruits they take for that program are lousy soldiers that only get by because they speak Arabic.
My experience with some of the 09L's was that they were Reservists, had been promised an easy trainup and they were "special" and therefore wouldn't be worked too hard. When they were pushed too hard, they'd get sullen and balky. Some of them were real fucking prima donnas, but like any other artist, if you needed them to produce you couldn't beat it out of them. I had a pretty good one, but some of the others in our brigade fucking sucked. Definitely a leadership challenge. You couldn't treat them like an infantry E-1. You can PT an infantry private til he drops if he doesn't obey. You try that with a 09L, he'll "forget" the dialect you need out of him at the moment.

I thought Yuengling was a Chinese beer, though I guess not even Obama would be that stupid, at least when making a bet!
The first time I had Yuengling was on a trip to Pittsburg. Everyone told me I should try it while I was there. At the time that was the only place you could get it. Now they have a brewery in SC so I can get it anytime.

"Maybe it's because of the Olympics. Heck, if he can cure the world, he can make us win medals."
This is your fundamental problem, right here. You shouldn't want so many medals. America has already won a lot of medals over the course of Olympics past. You don't need the whole pie; you need to learn that you should only have part of the pie, so that there is enough left for others, who have no pie.
It is for this very reason that I am founding a new nonprofit, the Athletic Coalition for Olympic Reward Normalization. This coalition of althetes from all peoples of the world will seek to right the wrongs of this overly-competitive Olympic society, where only the best, strongest, and brightest can win, and those with the biggest aspirations, yet the smallest muscles, are left behind to perish.
Please, won't you support us financially with a $10 donation?
